Exclamation Marks in the Book of Mormon: A Linguistic Analysis

Anderson, Brooke Ellen 17 June 2022 (has links)
This paper employs Ricoeur's Interpretation Theory to analyze the affect the exclamation mark has on the readers' interpretation of five Book of Mormon editions. Each unique instance of exclamation was obtained with its accompanying verse and these were coded by three coders for the genre they appeared in, the syntactic structures of their utterances, and the rhetorical function of the exclaimed proposition. This made possible a comparison of the exclaimed themes both within and across each genre and across each of the five editions analyzed. While the 1830 edition was found to have many exclamations in the genres of conversation and speech with emphasis on the themes of the love of God, the sacrifice of Christ, and the carnal nature of man, the 1920 edition by contrast saw emphasis mainly in the genres of prayer and aside on the call to repentance, the calamities of hell, and the need to call upon God's grace to overcome the many sins that will beset the latter generation of readers.

Evangelical color-blind preaching: Ricoeur’s ethical use of narrative in the situation of homiletical whiteness

Donahue-Martens, Scott 23 January 2024 (has links)
This dissertation develops a narrative homiletic for race-conscious preaching using a mutual critical correlation method. It argues that the evangelical embrace of a color-blind ideology homiletically, hermeneutically, and situationally limits the proclamation of the gospel in the age of racialization. Paul Ricoeur’s conception of the entrapping use of narrative is employed to understand the deep resistance many white evangelical Christians have toward racial consciousness. Constructively, Ricoeur’s ethical understanding of narrative and his model of threefold mimesis offer an alternative preaching paradigm rooted in mutual critical correlation and an understanding of the gospel in context developed in conversation with liberationist theology. The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity provides additional frames for understanding that matters of difference are not obstacles to overcome in preaching but are essential to deepening understandings of God and the gospel. This dissertation employs interdisciplinary methods rooted in practical theology that integrate Eduardo Bonilla-Silva’s sociology on color-blindness, narrative phenomenology, empirical research on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, and homiletics. The first chapter describes the evangelical embrace of color-blindness and its expository homiletical method. It understands evangelicalism as a constructed identity and outlines the need for a hermeneutic of situations in evangelical homiletics. Chapter two reviews narrative homiletics proposals, the homiletics literature on race and preaching, and evangelical expository preaching. The third chapter makes a theological turn to understand how evangelical theology aligns with the color-blind ideology. It turns to the liberationist theology of James Cone and a theology of broken symbols through Robert Cummings Neville, before outlining the mutual critical correlation model of David Tracy. This integrates homiletical theology with homiletical methodology, especially by understanding pre-figuring roles that aspects of identity bring to interpretation. The fourth chapter develops narrative critical correlation homiletics through the referential capacity of the gospel, rather than the sense of a biblical text. It argues that an ethical use of Ricoeur’s threefold mimesis can mediate a dialogue between text, context, situation, and identity in naming God and the gospel. The final chapter contains sermons and sermon analysis as a way of illustrating how sermonic methods and intercultural competence impact preaching. / 2026-01-23T00:00:00Z

La provocation de l'espérance : perspectives théologiques actuelles dans l'œuvre de Jacques Ellul / Provoking hope : contemporaries theological perspectives in the work of Jacques Ellul

Ribet, Elisabetta 05 June 2018 (has links)
In Hope in times of abandonment Jacques Ellul talks about hope as a human reaction to God’s silence as well as a “bright presence of the ultimate realities” in the present. Through the dialogue with Paul Ricoeur and Søren Kierkegaard, passing through Moltmann, Castelli and André Neher, our author introduces its challenges: as a theological judgement on our historical situation, a critic to the “abandonment” which inhabits the technological society and a fundamental choice towards an ethics of freedom and of non-power. Our aim is to present not only an analytic reading of Ellul’s statements on hope, but also of the inner dialectic of his theology, leading to a perspective setting upon two main topics: prophecy and eschaton. We are convinced that Jacques Ellul’s theological discourse on hope can bring crucial contributions to the theology of our time.

Filosofia da comunicação: estudos para uma hermenêutica da comunicação / Philosophy of communication: studies for a hermeneutic of communication

Bruzzone, Andrés 27 April 2018 (has links)
Paul Ricoeur addresses the issue of communication in a monographic text in 1971, bringing together elements of Phenomenology and Analytic Philosophy, to question the current approach to human communication, according to which everything is reduced to a trade of messages between a sender and a receiver. Accompanying the evolution of Ricoeur philosophical thought, it is possible to complement these initial reflections. The possibility of a hermeneutic of communication, and perhaps of a philosophy of the we (maybe a philosophy of the us), arises in close relation with the philosophical hermeneutics concept of narrative identity.

Along Paul Ricoeur we think of the political dimension of the traumatic memory resulting from the existence of the recent Brazilian dictatorship. This reflection comes from the perception that the authoritarian legacy prevents the consolidation of democracy and that the traumas of political repression have not been forgotten. Without disregarding the priority of the victims, we reflect of the elaboration of the trauma as recognizing and sharing a common past whose nefarious aspects of the unspoken becomes, among other issues, the legitimation of the state violence in the current times. We then reflect on the concepts of amnesty, justice and forgiveness, correlating them with the victimhood promoted by the new democracies. On the way we highlight the mediating role of testimony and acts of justice for a becoming of social peace, because if memory takes us back to the past, the promise of justice leads us to the future.

It correlates philosophy and theology having in the question of God the main problem. The hypothesis of the thesis argues that the intersection of the ar-eas is productive and an original work of thought can arises from this cross. The thesis suggests the term of the fold of religion, considering the task of recogni-tion of the self within broken ontology. The reflective philosophy articulates the aporias with the ontology of the possible in existential categories, especially in terms of religious language, hope and the aporia of grace. The research utilizes the phenomenological and hermeneutical method, and it is divided into four stages: at first, introduces the relationship between philosophy and theology and the divine name as the first fold of religion. The second chapter deals with time, narrative, and the myth-poetic. The third chapter deals with the metaphorical in-terpretation of religion within the ontology of the possible. The fourth and final chapter presents the existential fold whose movement is as a philosophical spiral in the life of Ricoeur. The research is concluded on the horizon of the capable human being and the recognition of the self mediated by the fold of religion. The result will be a reflection that makes possible a better understanding of the philosophy of Ricoeur, as well as foundation for future studies on the philoso-phy of religion.

However, the specific question is the plausibility of the interpretation of religion by literature. This is a concern because scholars in this area usually consider this plausibility to be evident. For this reason, generally few think of or concern themselves with the basis of it. The precise propose of this research is to develop a theoretical basis that will help to supply this lack. Therefore, this thesis has as its basic concern an epistemological question. To carry out this project, this thesis presents the hypothesis that indirect speech in literature characterized by the metaphor, especially the novel with polyphonic and carnivalesque possibilities, has the capacity of revealing specific traces of religious phenomenon in a different manner than do the direct speeches of philosophy and of the sciences, in such a way that it gives to literature the conditions of proceeding to a plausible interpretation and knowledge of religion. The development of the hypothesis is based on Paul Ricoeur s theory of metaphor, text and narrative and on Mikhail Bakhtin s concepts of dialogism, poliphony, and on carnivalesque and prosaic literature. With the purpose of exemplifying in practice the pertinence of the developed theoretical material, the novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, by José Saramago is interpreted. In methodological terms, this work will be developed in three steeps: first, literature and the knowledge of the reality; second, literature as interpreter of the religion and third, an example of the interpretation of the novel.(AU) / Religião e literatura é o tema geral desta tese de doutoramento.

O MAL SOFRIDO EM PAUL RICOEUR / THE HARDSHIP SUFFERED IN PAUL RICOEUR

Machado, Adriane da Silva 17 August 2009 (has links)
This is a study of the hardship suffered in Paul Ricoeur. Ricoeur believes that one of the greatest confusion pertains to the problem of evil is to put under the same optical phenomena as diverse as sin and suffering. Thus, this work tries to highlight the distinction made by the author of evil committed (sin) and the hardship suffered (suffering). For this purpose, it was necessary to conceptualize the harm in Ricoeur and then addressing the concept of harm suffered. For Ricoeur, the evil has not been the causative agent, to the extent that the suffering challenges us, hitting us indiscriminately. Finally, it is suggested that the wording of the evil is always unsatisfactory and therefore you must rescue the foundation of evil by an ethic that reflects from the set.

São eles: THE SYMBOLISM OF EVIL, O MAL: UM DESAFIO À FILOSOFIA E À TEOLOGIA, e O SI-MESMO COMO UM OUTRO. / This present thesis will explore the concept of evil, in the work of Paul Ricoeur (1923-2005). To do this we evaluate his work as a whole, but focused on three books, as they highlight moments of interpretation, of our author, regarding their approach to the problem of evil. They are: THE SYMBOLISM OF EVIL, EVIL: A CHALLENGE TO PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY, and THE ONESELF AS ANOTHER. But we inverted the chronological order of the texts to make an original approach that excels as a way to get to Paul Ricoeur proposal of a solution to the problem of evil. We have exposed how, as the author interprets the history of philosophy and history of theology, he developed the problem of evil, and from there too we have exposed how our author addresses it, that is, from the perspective of a person who suffers. To then see how the roots of the interpretation and possible solution, for the problem, are founded in myths and symbols of evil, and more, how man is fallible, and fragile in relation to the problem of evil. By then, finally, exploring his small ethics. Where we believe we can finish with the confrontation against evil through just institutions.
