The Effect of Implementing a Pass/Fail Curriculum with Retained Class Rank on Medical Student Well-Being

Farabee, Elizabeth A, Wholley, Grace, Chan, Adam Y, Blosser, Peter, Porter, Haley N, Harris, Taylor M, Gardner, Nicole L, Jones, Jonathan A, Herring, Jordan L, Wallace, Richard L 13 May 2020 (has links)
Moving to a pass/fail curriculum has generally been associated with decreased levels of stress and increased medical student well-being. However, not much research has been done to identify the specific effect of retaining class rank in a pass/fail curriculum and how this might affect student stress levels. The purpose of the current study was to fill in current research gaps in this area and to provide further insight into some of the factors that contribute to medical student burnout. The study was carried out using the Medical Student Well-Being Index (MSWBI), a self-reported survey that evaluates medical student fatigue, depression, burnout, anxiety/stress, and mental/physical QOL on a weighted and unweighted basis. Additionally, a set of add-on questions developed by the research team were distributed to participants along with the MSWBI. These questions asked the students to determine whether the change to a pass/fail curriculum increased, decreased, or did not change their perceived stress levels and to identify the major sources of their perceived stress. Participants were full-time medical students enrolled at ETSU Quillen College of Medicine from the Fall 2019 to Spring 2020 terms. They were divided by graduation year and asked to complete the MSWBI and IRB-approved add-on questions once per school year during this period. The number of add-on question respondents from each class reporting an increased or unchanged level of stress since switching to a pass-fail system encompassed 62.6% of all respondents. The most common reason provided by respondents for either increased or unchanged levels of stress after switching to a pass/fail curriculum was the continued reporting of class rank. This work will be useful in determining the true sources of student stress within the medical education system. While a pass/fail curriculum may reduce medical students’ perceived stress, this data indicates that class rank remains burdensome for many. Understanding the underlying factors that influence poor medical student well-being can lead to better targeted interventions.

A proposed health education program for the Warrington School at Warrington, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
The author has tried to emphasize the importance of the health of the school child and of a good health program in the public school. Realizing that most school administrators have very limited knowledge regarding the establishment of a program of this nature, it has been the purpose of this paper to set up a basic structure that may serve as a guide to the school in building its school health education program. Although this is written specifically for the school at Warrington, Florida, it is felt that this program may be of some benefit to other schools that would like to establish a better health program. / Typescript. / "August, 1950." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 38-39).

Studie- och yrkesvägledare: elevhälsoteamens kameleonter : En kvalitativ studie om studie- och yrkesvägledares roll i gymnasieskolans elevhälsoteam

Bengtsson, Amanda, Björnebäck, Nikita January 2021 (has links)
Our study aims to explore what experienced role some school counselors have or could have in school-health teams. We have explored this through qualitative interviews with six different informants, four school counselors and two leaders of school-health teams. We have examined their experiences and opinions about the school counselor’s role in school- health teams. Our research questions are: How does the school counselor’s role look like and how are their competencies being used in school-health teams? How does leaders of school-health teams see the school counselor’s role and competencies in the work done by school-health teams? How does the school counselor and the leader of the school-health teams experience the cooperation between the school counselor and the other members of the school-health team? The results show that all our informants agree that the school counselor should be a part of the school-health team. They also agree that the school counselor have competencies that no other member of the school-health team have, including knowledge about educational routes, schooling, and conversation methodology. Furthermore, our study shows that the interprofessional cooperation in the school-health team prove to have both pros and cons.

The Effects of the Transition from Pre-nursing to Nursing on Mental Health

Davis, Andrew 06 April 2022 (has links)
Mental health is an ever-growing crisis among adolescents and young adults, with suicide as second leading cause of death and the number of those negatively affected continually on the rise. Transitions are one of the major stressors prevalent among these age groups, placing individuals at risk for mental health deficits. This quantitative voluntary response comparative study assesses the transitional mental health of pre-nursing students and students in the nursing program at East Tennessee State University. Emailed to all with a declared major of pre-nursing or nursing, this study measured mental health using evidenced based assessment tools. The PHQ-9 for depression and the GAD-7 for anxiety, along with additional demographic information and mental health service usage questions, was sent to and completed by participants. A total of n = 173 responses were received. Of these responses n = 99 or 57.2 percent were nursing students, a participation rate of 9.6 percent, and n = 74 or 42.8 percent were pre-nursing students. The research revealed that depression and anxiety scores were above the cutoff for moderate depression and anxiety in both groups, as well as identified a deficit in availability of mental health resources, with over 10 percent of students unable to access counseling or psychiatric services. Contraindicatory to literature, which predicted improving mental health in the progression through university studies, this study reveals a variable and even worsening trajectory of mental health as students transition into the nursing program and progressed through college.

Sexuální identifikace jako součást výuky výchovy ke zdraví na střední škole / Sexual identification as a part of high school health education

Klucký, Jakub January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the issue of homosexuality in the context of its current situation in Czech society and in connection with the education of secondary school students. The theoretical part of the thesis is mainly focused on a thorough mapping of the Czech Republic homosexual environment, from explaining the basic terminology related to the topic, explaining the essence of homosexuality in connection with related circumstances, to analyzing the human-rights aspect and placing the issue of homosexuality into a secondary school education program. The aim of the practical part is to find out what students are aware of the topic also in the context with secondary (or primary) education or preventive activities at school. This as described is implemented on the basis of quantitative research, and as a method of data collection a questionnaire was chosen. The analysis of the data shows that high school students have a good knowledge of the issue, however it is probably not based on a secondary or primary education due to the fact, that the topic of homosexuality wasn't discussed in the curriculum or prevention programs, as a one-fifth of the respondents said. Research also reveals, that students' attitudes toward homosexuality are rather positive. In the end of the work, there is an output...

Exploring School Health Counsellor's Knowledge And Cultural Competence On Female Genital Cutting In Sweden. A Qualitative Study.

Mohamed, Suhad Said January 2023 (has links)
This qualitative study explores the factual knowledge base and cultural competence of school health counsellors regarding Female Genital Cutting (FGC) in a school setting in Sweden. Through four semi-structured interviews, the research explored participants’ understanding of FGC and their cultural competence in addressing this sensitive issue. Thematic analysis and the lens of social convention theory were applied to interpret the collected data. Results indicate that the school health counsellor’s team demonstrated to some extent factual knowledge and cultural competence regarding FGC. However, challenges such as time constraints, language barriers, and fear of evoking trauma emerged during their work with this concept in a school environment. Aligning with social convention theory, the participant's effort was seen as challenging the continuation of FGC within the Swedish context. The study contributes to the broader discourse on the role of school health counsellors in promoting awareness, prevention, and support for culturally sensitive topics related to the well-being of the student. The study concludes by advocating for culturally inclusive resources within the school to effectively tackle and disseminate knowledge on FGC, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue within the educational system.

Evaluation of a theory of planned behaviour-based breastfeeding intervention in Northern Irish schools using a randomized cluster design

Giles, M., McClenahan, C., Armour, C., Millar, S., Rae, G., Mallett, J., Stewart-Knox, Barbara January 2014 (has links)
No / The aim of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based intervention designed to enhance young people's motivations to breastfeed. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 50 post-primary schools from across Northern Ireland. However, dropout and exclusion criteria utilized for the current study resulted in an effective sample size of 42 schools. The intervention was delivered in two 35-min classroom sessions targeting those beliefs identified by the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as significant in predicting motivation to breastfeed. Questionnaires incorporating the key components of the TPB were administered to all intervention and control schools at baseline, 1 and 6 months post-intervention. Multi-level modelling was used to analyse the data. Findings suggest that the intervention was effective in that it increased females' intentions to breastfeed, expanded their knowledge and led to more favourable attitudes and perceptions of subjective norms. Notably, females' knowledge increased more in secondary schools than in grammar schools irrespective of whether they were control or intervention schools. The research has provided evidence to support the use of the TPB in the design and evaluation of an intervention to increase females' intentions to breastfeed.

Hylander, Irene, Lindström (fd Johansson), Karin January 2015 (has links)
Nyckelord: socialt stöd, skolsköterskor, elever, ungdomar, långvarig sjukdom, kronisk sjukdom, omvårdnad / Aim: To describe school nurses social support to adolescents with long-term and chronic illness.
