Habiter au gré des vents en Méditerranée nord-occidentale / To live with the winds in the North Western Mediterranean area

Barniaudy, Clément 02 December 2016 (has links)
My doctoral research work is based on observations and field interviews. I revealed that thesocio-spatial practices of most of the geographical actors dealing with the winds, in the NorthWestern Mediterranean area, are characterized by technological hybridization anddeterritorialization (part 1). Change in the practices of interactions with the winds can belinked to the geohistory of anemology: overtime, scientific progresses built a paradigm ofwind modelling (part 2). My doctoral work stresses the importance of an esthetical andphenomenological approach that would include sensitive perception, symbolic imaginary, andartistic expressions (part 3). This approach would re-centre the relations between humanbeings and the winds: the very experience that North Western Mediterranean societies haveshaped by living with the winds. The last part of my dissertation analyses to which extent thisapproach based on those new ‘human’ practices (architecture, energy) could be useful forpublic action purpose (part 4).

Just assessment in school : - a context-sensitive comparative study of pupils' conceptions in Sweden and Germany

Vogt, Bettina January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines pupils’ justice conceptions regarding educational assessment. Due to the context-dependency of norms and values as well as of assessment, the study compares the justice conceptions of pupils in two different’socio-educational’ contexts: Sweden and Germany. The main interest of the study is to understand and to reconstruct pupils’ own relevance structures and what just assessment means from a pupils’ point of view. Here, the study aims to reach beyond the level of mere description by providing theoretical conceptualisations of pupils’ justice conceptions regarding assessment. Thus, the study´s methodological foundation is characterised by a combination of a context-sensitive comparative approach on the one hand, and on the other hand a pragmatist Grounded Theory approach. Data were mainly generated through focus group interviews with pupils attending the last year of the lower secondary level in the Swedish comprehensive school as well as in different school types in the German school system. In total, the sample consists of 95 pupils, who were interviewed in 21 focus group interviews. In addition, other sources of data were included, such as regulations and guidelines that supported a context-sensitive analysis of pupils’ conceptions. The theoretical conceptualisation that explains pupils’ justice conceptions is ‘meta-assessment’. ‘Meta-assessment’ refers to pupils’ evaluation of the assessment they experience in terms of justice and represents the shared, abductively derived and overlying analytical category regarding pupils’ conceptions. Pupils’ ‘meta-assessment’ is based on normative justice conceptions as well as on justice conceptions that are related to pupils’ situation and context-bound experiences with assessment. The first ones are about the ethico-moral character of pupils’ justice conceptions. The second shed light on the contextual conditions and consequences of the logics and practices underlying educational assessment as experienced by pupils on an everyday basis. This implies that just assessment from a pupils’ perspective needs to be understood in its wider contextual embedment; and in relation to teaching and learning in order to understand the complex interrelations of what just assessment ‘is’, and ‘should be’ from the perspective of those, who are mainly affected by it.

Scaling Context-Sensitive Points-To Analysis

Nasre, Rupesh 02 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Pointer analysis is one of the key static analyses during compilation. The efficiency of several compiler optimizations and transformations depends directly on the scalability and precision of the underlying pointer analysis. Recent advances still lack an efficient and scalable context-sensitive inclusion-based pointer analysis. In this work, we propose four novel techniques to improve the scalability of context-sensitive points-to analysis for C/C++ programs. First, we develop an efficient way of storing the approximate points-to information using a multi-dimensional bloom filter (multibloom). By making use of fast hash functions and exploiting the spatial locality of the points-to information, our multibloom-based points-to analysis offers significant savings in both analysis time and memory requirement. Since the representation never resets any bit in the multibloom, no points-to information is ever lost; and the analysis is sound, though approximate. This allows a client to trade off a minimal amount of precision but gain huge savings(two orders less) in memory requirement. By making use of multiple random and independent hash functions, the algorithm also achieves high precision and runs, on an average,2×faster than Andersen’s points-to analysis. Using Mod/Ref analysis as a client, we illustrate that the precision is above 98% of that of Andersen’s analysis. Second, we devise a sound randomized algorithm that processes a group of constraints in a less precise but efficient manner and the remaining constraints in a more precise manner. By randomly choosing different groups of constraints across different runs, the analysis results in different points-to information, each of which is guaranteed to be sound. By joining the results of a few runs, the analysis obtains an approximation that is very close to the one obtained by the more precise analysis and still proves efficient in terms of the analysis time. We instantiate our technique to develop a randomized context-sensitive points-to analysis. By varying the level of randomization, a client of points-to analysis can trade off minimal precision (less than 5%) for large gain in efficiency(over 50% reduction in analysis time). We also develop an adaptive version of the randomized algorithm that carefully varies the randomization across different runs to achieve maximum benefit in terms of analysis time and precision without pre-setting the randomization percentage and the number of runs. Third, we transform the points-to analysis problem into finding a solution to a system of linear equations. By making novel use of prime factorization, we illustrate how to transform complex points-to constraints into a set of linear equations and transform the solution back as a points-to solution. We prove that our algorithm is sound and show that our technique is 1.8×faster than Andersen’s analysis for large benchmarks. Finally, we observe that the order in which points-to constraints are processed plays a vital role in the algorithm efficiency. We prove that finding an optimal ordering to compute the fixpoint solution is NP-Hard. We then propose a greedy heuristic based on the amount of points-to information computed by a constraint to prioritize the constraints. This results in a dynamic ordering of the constraint evaluation which, in turn, results in skewed evaluation of constraints where each constraint is evaluated repeatedly and different number of times in a single iteration. Our prioritized analysis achieves, on an average, an improvement of 33% over Andersen’s points-to analysis. We illustrate that our algorithms help in scaling the state-of-the-art pointer analyses. We also believe that the techniques developed would be useful for other program analyses and transformations.

Design and Analysis of Techniques for Multiple-Instance Learning in the Presence of Balanced and Skewed Class Distributions

Wang, Xiaoguang January 2015 (has links)
With the continuous expansion of data availability in many large-scale, complex, and networked systems, such as surveillance, security, the Internet, and finance, it becomes critical to advance the fundamental understanding of knowledge discovery and analysis from raw data to support decision-making processes. Existing knowledge discovery and data analyzing techniques have shown great success in many real-world applications such as applying Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) methods to detect targets of interest in imagery, drug activity prediction, computer vision recognition, and so on. Among these techniques, Multiple-Instance (MI) learning is different from standard classification since it uses a set of bags containing many instances as input. The instances in each bag are not labeled | instead the bags themselves are labeled. In this area many researchers have accomplished a lot of work and made a lot of progress. However, there still exist some areas which are not covered. In this thesis, we focus on two topics of MI learning: (1) Investigating the relationship between MI learning and other multiple pattern learning methods, which include multi-view learning, data fusion method and multi-kernel SVM. (2) Dealing with the class imbalance problem of MI learning. In the first topic, three different learning frameworks will be presented for general MI learning. The first uses multiple view approaches to deal with MI problem, the second is a data fusion framework, and the third framework, which is an extension of the first framework, uses multiple-kernel SVM. Experimental results show that the approaches presented work well on solving MI problem. The second topic is concerned with the imbalanced MI problem. Here we investigate the performance of learning algorithms in the presence of underrepresented data and severe class distribution skews. For this problem, we propose three solution frameworks: a data re-sampling framework, a cost-sensitive boosting framework and an adaptive instance-weighted boosting SVM (with the name IB_SVM) for MI learning. Experimental results - on both benchmark datasets and application datasets - show that the proposed frameworks are proved to be effective solutions for the imbalanced problem of MI learning.

Genèse des gestes professionnels de l'accompagnement de la rencontre avec l’œuvre d'art chez des enseignants spécialistes et non spécialistes : une enquête au croisement de la didactique des arts visuels et des sciences de la formation / Professional background of actions for accompanying the meeting with artwork in specialist and non -specialist teachersand no specialists : an investigation at the crossroads of teaching visual arts and science education

Rivière, Mary-Eve 22 November 2014 (has links)
Changes in teaching practices of the visual arts visual arts in the context of institutional control and advocates the use of authentic artwork. In addition, arts education should contribute beyond his own contributions to the "basic skills" as well as cultural techniques. The establishment and implementation, operation of the meeting situation with the work thus defined requires that teachers with a set of competencies that need to be informed and problematized. The research focuses on the genesis of professional acts on the report at work and the development of professional skills, as well as the nature of educational objects (translation of reference knowledge, didactic engineering skills, articulation specific knowledge with the "basic skills" and academic socialization). The problem is built on issues that cross the relation to the work of these teachers, professional acts and building a theory we explained as a "personal theory-in-action."Data collection was done at the elementary and middle school. The investigation has included the specificity of a kindergarten with a Small Gallery (specific space dedicated in the institution where students encounter very young art "authentic" or real). She shed light on teaching practices. The methodologies are based on fieldwork through participant observation, maintenance of explaining Vermersch type and discourse analysis. Theoretical frameworks confront angles of attack usually compartmentalized: aesthetics, art sciences, art history (Goodman, Arasse Pelissier, Castle ...) Sociology (Heinich Lahire); the teaching of visual arts, visual arts (Chanteux, Gaillot, Lagoutte, Reyt ...) and comparative arts teaching (Goodman, Rickenmann ...) theory development in professional situations (theory of situated action, professional gestures). The report on the work was constructed in family dynamics, school and work and the search for the origins of this report at work makes us see the role played by some seminal events. The elements of a personal theory of art, the work experience behind this report to work, show an interdependence. The meeting of art promoting the establishment of this "theory-in-action." Finally, the relation to the work of our interlocutors determines their professional practice: links between relation to the work, designs and professional acts keys to their profession, were highlighted.

La contribution des habitants et des usages à la production des espaces publics : le cas du tremblement de terre et tsunami au chili, février 2010 / The contribution of the inhabitants and of the usages to the production of public spaces : the case of earthquake and tsunami in chile, february, 2010

Andersen, Karen 28 January 2015 (has links)
Through two field surveys we show how the inhabitants participate in the production of a creative and resilient public space. By public space we understand its double theoretical filiation: physical and political. We target the observation in the transformation processes of the public places through the modification of the practices and the meanings that these places have for the inhabitants. We also handle the public space as the place of the political debate, the meeting and the conflict in the shape of a democratic practice. This particular public space will be named: “spontaneous public space”. It is spontaneous, because it is not designed and it is not planned. As it appears spontaneously, it can disappear in the same way. It is produced from real-life experiences and from local conditions. An ethnographical field survey focused on the experiences and perception of public spaces by the inhabitants and the communities, give an intentionality to the analysis of the sensitive experience, because it does not limit itself to the dimensions of the sensitive experience but integrates what is observed or either found by inhabitants. After the earthquake and the tsunami that occurred on February 27, 2010, off the coast of south-central Chile, we noticed how in a situation of upheaval and reconstruction of the spaces of representation, the sensitive plays a key-role. The catastrophic situation generates spontaneous public spaces; it generates a practical commitment of the inhabitants, mobilizes sensitive reactions and makes the public space more hospitable and resilient. From the study of two concrete cases -corresponding to the emergency camp El Molino of Dichato and to the city of Talca after the disaster- we focus the observation in the practices of implication of the inhabitants during all the process of reconstruction of their public and private spaces as well as their intimate spheres. These practices include all the actions of the inhabitants, from their most spontaneous and short-lived actions to face the reconstruction and the state of emergency and vulnerability of the situation post-disaster, to the most formalized actions. We want to complete the idea of a “participative” urban design with the notion of a spontaneous public space - autonomous of the participative plans - as an inclusive third space capable of introducing sensitive aspects in the debate. This research gives rise to questioning the urban design as a common space of expression and understanding, where the decoupling existing between the expertise and the novice can be surpassed

Man, human and humanism in works of Albert Camus

Aqelsaravani, Zahra 30 January 2014 (has links)
Albert Camus himself distinguished three phases in his work: that of the absurd (awareness of non-meaning of life led Camus to the idea that man is ‘’ free to live without appeal’’, take a risk to pay the consciences of his errors and must exhaust the joys of this earth. Life accepts the non-sense of the world and finds happiness in even the absurd. Camus says that the absurd is not in man nor in the world, but in their common presences, in their ‘’ confrontation’’ and defines it as ‘’ indifference to the future and the passion to exhaust all that is given’’), that of the revolt: (revolt is considered by him as the only tenable position to face the absurd. It appears with the freedom and passion, as a valid solution and capable of ensuring justice. It alone can assure emotional action capable of overcoming unproductiveness and anxiety created by the absurd), that of the love (Camus meant here the love of man as he is, with its forces and intelligence as well as its limitations and weaknesses. Camus expresses his affection and solidarity towards man. This is not only a classical humanism which expresses itself, not just a moral position, but the position of a sensitive man. Camus still tries to approach these ‘’ few things’’ this ‘’obscure part’’ which is in every man, and himself in particular. This study examines the remarkable prose of Camus that concerns the issue of man, who progresses and changes over the years; attachment to the service of justice, relating to man whose idea is not separable from that of happiness; adherence to human and humanist ethics which are pushing the human mind to perfection. His art is not ‘’ a solitary joy’’. Camus formulates his expectation from man because art is the way of expression of communion between people.

Tanto o bloco analógico quanto o processador digital foram implementados usando-se o processo CMOS90 da IBM / Abstract: The experiments in high-energy physics has benefited greatly from the progress made in the area of Microelectronics, since it has provided the creation of more accurate detectors and analog / digital signal processing circuits that are increasingly fast and accurate. The reduction in the minimum length of the channel in modern CMOS processes while providing greater speed and precision also reduces the area used by each channel, which enables the implementation of more channels on the same chip. With a larger number of channels per chip, we can with the same number of chips implement a larger number of channels than previously possible and with that physicists can perform a reconstruction of the trajectory more accurately. This work describes a proposal for a Trigger level zero based on the available specifications of the DZero experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboraty (FERMILAB). In the following pages the design and implementation of an analog front-end that detects the charge provided by the VLPC detector followed by a high-speed comparator that provides a logical level to a digital processor are described. The digital processor in turn uses an architecture of parallel processors that communicate with each other are able in order to estimate the trajectory of particles based on initial data loaded in RAM based on simulations of the detector geometry made by physicists. Both the analog block and the digital processor are implemented using the IBM CMOS90 process / Doutorado / Eletrônica, Microeletrônica e Optoeletrônica / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

This paper examines the incorporation of sustainability aspects in the innovation’s agenda in the Brazilian pressure sensitive labels (PSL) market throw case study methodology, focused on Novelprint, an important player in this segment. Presents a literature review related to the connection between sustainability and innovation in organizations contexts, leading to the examination of the SustainabilityOriented Innovation (SOI) concept. The analysis of the incorporation of sustainability aspects in the innovation’s agenda, the analysis focus in the case study, occurs through SOI models. It uses the single case study methodology, with the data collected in semistructured interviews with professionals of the sector and the company and analyzed by the SOI models presented in the literature review. The case presents an atypical vertically business model, integrating all the structures of the PSL segment: coating & lamination, converting and label application machinery, owner of more than one hundred patents and with important attributes of sustainability in its products portfolio. To context this understanding, this present paper includes a PSL sectorial analysis in Brazil, their supply chain and the profile of coating & lamination and converting companies, besides studying the theme of sustainability in this segment. The analysis reveals that there’s no incorporation of sustainability in the innovation agenda, even though there are ecoefficiency actions inherent to the packaging sector. No external demands have been identified, as pressures from customers and end-user companies, so present in sustainable corporate commitments in the consumer goods sector, or even regulation, making the subject of sustainability far away, not only in relation to the innovation agenda, but also to the sustainability strategy in general. The study also reveals that, despite products with advantages in sustainable attributes in its portfolio, the company doesn’t use this differential correctly in its market, something that is object of recommendations at the end of the work. Considering the limited generalization power of this study, the company's role in the industry and its innovative profile, it would be worth exam if the findings of this study also apply to other players in the Brazilian PSL market.
