En modell för implementering av räddningstjänsten i en urban plattform : En fallstudie på Mälardalens Brand- och Räddningsförbund i utvecklingen mot en smart stad / A model for implementing the fire department in an urban platform : A case study at Mälardalens Brand- och Räddningsförbund in the development towards a smart city

OLBY, PER, EKSTRÖM, STEFAN January 2016 (has links)
This study covers the implementation of fire departments in an urban platform in two parts. The purpose of first part is to examine how the urban platform can help developing the operation of fire departments and how this can contribute to a smart city. This is studied through interviews with different fire departments in the region of Mälardalen, Sweden, and an authority responsible for improving the society’s capabilities of managing emergencies. A number of areas within the fire departments, which an urban platform would improve, have been identified. Literature regarding smart cities have been combined with the empirical findings to discuss how the implementation of fire departments in an urban platform can contribute to a smart city. The purpose of the second part is to provide an example of how a fire department can be divided and modeled for an implementation in a potential urban platform. More precisely, the fire department Mälardalens brand- och räddningsförbund is investigated and modeled for an implementation in ABB’s control system 800xA. The result is three different structures that serve as the foundation for the model and a future implementation in an urban platform. In this part, it is also concluded that a necessary step to ensure an effective model is to relate the modelling to the greater context of a city.

Measuring The Information Literacy of School Stakeholders in Implementing Blended Learning in High Schools in The State of Kuwait to Propose a School Management System. Examining the level of information literacy of stakeholders in High schools and to propose a new school management system to achieve the best implementation of information literacy and blended learning practices

AlQaoud, Fatima N.H. January 2022 (has links)
Information Literacy (IL) has been implemented among workers in schools in recent years in order to enhance workers’ skills and competencies through the utilisation of technology in education. To implement a sustainable IL system, the building of an IT infrastructure is required including the provision of PCs and network access, enabling students to connect to the internet during class time in order to access educational web-based content as well as to share discussions about subjects with their peers in and out of the class. Assessing the level of information literacy (IL) of stakeholders will assist in creating a new proposed school management system (SMS) to be used among them in the future. This will encourage teachers to use blended learning approach for teaching their students. Therefore, it is important to examine the IL of stakeholders (principal, head of division, teacher) in Kuwait to increase their skills and competencies which will lead to greater innovation in future developments. This work aims at assessing information literacy level of stakeholders, their skills and competencies in utilising technology in a workplace environment, which will assist the researcher to create a new school system. In addition, this work presents a new proposed school management system (SMS) for stakeholders in the current educational system of high schools in Kuwait, therefore, applying the BL approach in order to achieve a high quality of students' learning outcomes.

UAV Based Measurement Opportunities and Evaluation for 5/6G Connectivity of Autonomous Vehicles

Evans, Matthew John 03 June 2022 (has links)
The emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) along with the implementation of 5G networks offers exciting opportunities in expanding wireless capabilities. Not only is improved wireless performance expected with traditional devices such as mobile phones, but new use cases such as the internet-of-things and autonomous vehicle operation will rely on 5G and future network generations. In such widespread applications, from transportation to vital business operation, reliable and often guaranteed connectivity is required for safety and commercial approval. Introducing UAVs into network processes has been explored and implemented in certain instances to take advantage of the flexibility drone devices offer in their mobility and control to address these evolving network possibilities. While practical UAV deployment in certain network cases has been demonstrated, including coverage restoration in disaster relief scenarios, more ambitious goals of 5G will have additional considerations. This includes autonomous vehicles (AVs) whose operation is defined by levels representing varying degrees of autonomy. With computational requirements exponentially increasing as a vehicle's autonomy level is increased, 5G is expected to play an integral role in offloading certain vehicle tasks to the cloud. This thesis then proposes UAV based measurement opportunities as a method to characterize 5G coverage as part of autonomous vehicle processes to identify the proper level of autonomy that can operate safely given the current RF environment. This thesis proposes an UAV based measurement system that would provide coverage verification employing a platform capable of precise RF measurements and enhanced spatial sampling of the environment. Methods employed to traditionally characterize available coverage, including cellular drive tests, do not result in accurate enough measurements for AV use cases. Where lack of coverage in common network processes and use cases can result in dropped calls and poor connectivity in mobile devices, autonomous systems proposed in evolving network generations that deal with safety and mission critical functions must have guaranteed and verified coverage. Data produced in this thesis demonstrates that the proposed UAV based measurement system will improve measurement accuracy and enhanced geographic performance over conventional automotive vehicle based measurement systems / Master of Science / Wireless networks have grown to support vital and everyday processes in modern society. The COVID-19 pandemic proved wireless communication means a necessity to limit daily disruptions, but networks had already been supporting a continuously increasing amount of mobile devices prior to this. Other demonstrations of wireless network capacity include the release of 5G technology, allowing improved performance with traditional devices like smartphones, along with additional use cases this technology enables including the internet-of-things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) leveraged functions for commercial applications. While wireless network capabilities have demonstrated their success in supporting and maintaining some critical functions, it is important to continually look ahead and plan for future network implementations in order to develop and support all desired advancements. Current measurement methods that assist in verifying coverage for current use cases like mobile devices will fall short in verification for more stringent requirements characteristic of AV and other ambitious network goals. The results found in this work then support the need for continuing research of a UAV-leveraged platform in the scope of eventual practical and safe AV integration into society. The focus of this thesis is to then propose and provide initial evaluation of a UAV-leveraged measurement platform to verify the operability of autonomous vehicles (AVs), which are expected to be a major aspect of future network processes. The computational requirements to operate an autonomous vehicle exponentially increase as a vehicle's autonomy level is increased. 5G is then expected to play an integral role in offloading certain vehicle tasks to the cloud. This thesis paper then proposes UAV based measurement opportunities as a method to characterize 5G coverage as part of autonomous vehicle processes to identify the proper level of autonomy that can operate safely given the current RF environment.

Study and development of wireless sensor network architecture tolerant to delays / Etude et développement d'une architecture de réseaux de capteurs tolérante aux délais

Zguira Bahri, Yosra 20 December 2018 (has links)
Transport has become fundamental in the cities to the well functioning of the economy and the welfare of the city population. For several years, transportation faces many issues such as traffic jamming, high accidents rate, unhealthy life due to smoke and dust, air pollution as a result of carbon emission, etc. To deal with these matters, researches integrate digital technologies to ground transportation which is known as Intelligent Transport System (ITS). ITS can sense, analyze, collect, control and communicate different data. This thesis investigates and proposes a new protocol for data collection applications in an urban environment. We make three main contributions: firstly, we propose a new protocol denoted the "Internet of Bikes" IoB-DTN protocol which applies Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) paradigm to the Internet of Things (IoT) applications running a data collection application on urban bike sharing system based sensor network. The protocol is evaluated on a realistic scenario by assessing the buffer management policies, the number of copies sprayed in the network as well as the number of bicycles used. Secondly, a comparative evaluation of the performance of the multi-hop IoB-DTN protocol with a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology, LoRa/LoRaWAN type is investigated. LPWAN have been designed to provide cost-effective wide area connectivity for small throughput IoT applications: multiyear lifetime and multikilometer range for battery-operated mobile devices. This part of our work aims at providing network designers and managers insights on the most relevant technology for their urban applications that could run on bike sharing systems. Finally, we propose an efficient IoB-DTN protocol based on data aggregation mechanism. We propose three variants of IoB-DTN: IoB based on spatial aggregation (IoB-SA), IoB based on temporal aggregation (IoB-TA) and IoB based on spatio-temporal aggregation (IoB-STA). We compare the three variants with the multi-hop IoB-DTN protocol without aggregation and the low-power long-range technology, LoRa type. Comparison results verify that the three variants of IoB-DTN based on data aggregation improve several metrics such as the delivery rate, energy consumption and throughput.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao Rafael da Cruz Gaudencio.pdf: 32234281 bytes, checksum: 1e54a882c5ba0916eae3a7520a63fef3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-08-10 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This Master's Dissertation reflects upon the subject Smart City: sustainable development, control society and the city of the future. In this thematic framework, the object of study is the contemporary scenario of Smart City development. Founded upon theoretical and empirical elements that are assumptions about the aforementioned object, the research proposes a line of argument guided by sociological and technological concepts. In the outline, the concepts of sustainability and technology pertain to proposed actions and mobilization for social engagement and for the political agenda, promoting equitable development. However, some obstacles to contextualizing the Smart City are, for example, the control society, and particularly, regulatory policies. Thus, an ideal society is established based on media visibility about private initiatives promoted by corporations for the equitable advancement of people. Leading the community in a meaningful way presupposes essential interests that raise the social level in the world in the search for a green economy. The counterpart of sustainability is the result of rapacious industrialization, which seeks to satisfy social expectations and, through the media, interferes in the customs and desires in popular culture. Based on these theoretical and practical elements, the research problem consists in the growing human and social evolutionary complexity which points to possible new civil turmoil. This problem concerns the question of how Smart Cities are currently structured and their future development. This research involved the use of combined methods of qualitative and hands-on analysis to discover the directions the Smart City proposes for society and for consumption. The analysis of the corpus of research delves into the current methods of customs as they pertain to interaction with the ecosystem and with man engaged in conscious sustainable development. In addition, the methodological procedures involved a literature review. The thematic link between sustainability, technology, control society and consumption was based on the epistemological framework of theories of communication, knowledge, administration and marketing, sustainability and consumption. Authors that stand out in this study are Foucault, Deleuze, Parkin and Kotler. With these characteristics, the relevance of this research centers on deepening the debate in the discursive field of politics, the social, the current context and sustainable consumption / A presente Pesquisa de Mestrado examina o conceito Smart City: desenvolvimento sustentável, sociedade de controle e cidade inteligente.

Understanding social and community dynamics from taxi GPS data

Chen, Chao 04 July 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Taxis equipped with GPS sensors are an important sensory device for examining people's movements and activities. They are not constrained to a pre-defined schedule/route. Big taxi GPS data recording the spatio-temporal traces left by taxis provides rich and detailed glimpse into the motivations, behaviours, and resulting dynamics of a city's mobile population through the road network. In this dissertation, we aim to uncover the "hidden facets" regarding social and community dynamics encoded in the taxi GPS data to better understand how urban population behaves and the resulting dynamics in the city. As some "hidden facets" are with regard to similar aspect of social and community dynamics, we further formally define three categories for study (i.e. social dynamics, traffic dynamics, and operational dynamics), and explore them to fill the wide gaps between the raw taxi GPS data and innovative applications and smart urban services. Specifically, 1. To enable applications of real-time taxi fraud alerts, we propose iBOAT algorithm which is capable of detecting anomalous trajectories "on-the-fly" and identifying which parts of the trajectory are responsible for its anomalousness, by comparing them against historically trajectories having the same origin and destination. 2. To introduce cost-effective and environment-friendly transport services to citizens, we propose B-Planner which is a two-phase approach, to plan bi-directional night bus routes leveraging big taxi GPS data. 3. To offer a personalized, interactive, and traffic-aware trip route planning system to users, we propose TripPlanner system which contains both offline and online procedures, leveraging a combination of Location-based Social Network (i.e. LBSN) and taxi GPS data sets. Finally, some promising research directions for future work are pointed out, which mainly attempt to fuse taxi GPS data with other data sets to provide smarter and personalized urban services for citizens

Learning based event model for knowledge extraction and prediction system in the context of Smart City / Un modèle de gestion d'évènements basé sur l'apprentissage pour un système d'extraction et de prédiction dans le contexte de Ville Intelligente

Kotevska, Olivera 30 January 2018 (has links)
Billions of “things” connected to the Internet constitute the symbiotic networks of communication devices (e.g., phones, tablets, and laptops), smart appliances (e.g., fridge, coffee maker and so forth) and networks of people (e.g., social networks). So, the concept of traditional networks (e.g., computer networks) is expanding and in future will go beyond it, including more entities and information. These networks and devices are constantly sensing, monitoring and generating a vast amount of data on all aspects of human life. One of the main challenges in this area is that the network consists of “things” which are heterogeneous in many ways, the other is that their state of the interconnected objects is changing over time, and there are so many entities in the network which is crucial to identify their interdependency in order to better monitor and predict the network behavior. In this research, we address these problems by combining the theory and algorithms of event processing with machine learning domains. Our goal is to propose a possible solution to better use the information generated by these networks. It will help to create systems that detect and respond promptly to situations occurring in urban life so that smart decision can be made for citizens, organizations, companies and city administrations. Social media is treated as a source of information about situations and facts related to the users and their social environment. At first, we tackle the problem of identifying the public opinion for a given period (year, month) to get a better understanding of city dynamics. To solve this problem, we proposed a new algorithm to analyze complex and noisy textual data such as Twitter messages-tweets. This algorithm permits an automatic categorization and similarity identification between event topics by using clustering techniques. The second challenge is combing network data with various properties and characteristics in common format that will facilitate data sharing among services. To solve it we created common event model that reduces the representation complexity while keeping the maximum amount of information. This model has two major additions: semantic and scalability. The semantic part means that our model is underlined with an upper-level ontology that adds interoperability capabilities. While the scalability part means that the structure of the proposed model is flexible in adding new entries and features. We validated this model by using complex event patterns and predictive analytics techniques. To deal with the dynamic environment and unexpected changes we created dynamic, resilient network model. It always chooses the optimal model for analytics and automatically adapts to the changes by selecting the next best model. We used qualitative and quantitative approach for scalable event stream selection, that narrows down the solution for link analysis, optimal and alternative best model. It also identifies efficient relationship analysis between data streams such as correlation, causality, similarity to identify relevant data sources that can act as an alternative data source or complement the analytics process.

As an old road, it provides low added-value services and has social demands pending of solution, as the same time as it is passing by an urban requalification process aiming the change in this scenario. It is believed that, by transforming this route in a sustainable innovation center, the attractiveness of this zone will be increased, bringing in companies and services intensive in technology and of higher complexity. To accomplish the change in 'Linha Verde' in aaccordance with the Reference Term presented by the City Hall of Curitiba to Fundação Getulio Vargas, a study on Living Labs was conducted – real life experimentation labs that target the creation of innovative products and services through public-private-personal partnerships. The research methods applied in the formulation of the present thesis proposal were national and international experience collection through literature revision, semi-structured interviews with key players of 'Linha Verde' project material analysis and field visits. The Strategic Situational Planning was used to realize scenario diagnosis and proposals to the solution of the case. The proposal developed in the work consists of mapping potential Living Labs for 'Linha Verde' detaling important aspects apprehended in bibliographical review (coordination, participation and network formation and implementation method). It was made the option of suggesting them according to the six interest areas of a smart city (smart environment, smart mobility, smart living, smart people, smart economy and smart governance) given the fact that Curitiba already adopts this concept. In addition to that, the creation of a structure of governance and innovative ideas capitation was suggested, based on researched international experiences. Possible externalities that the Living Labs may bring to the city are also presented. Lastly, the steps of the proposal implemetation are presented. The initiatives presented here can contribute to make the 'Linha Verde' a social and economic development area serving as a laboratory of innovative urban solutions.
