Designing Affordable Housing for Adaptability: Principles, Practices, & Application

Danko, Micaela R. 01 April 2013 (has links)
While environmental and economic sustainability have been driving factors in the movement towards a more resilient built environment, social sustainability is a factor that has received significantly less attention over the years. Federal support for low-income housing has fallen drastically, and the deficit of available, adequate, affordable homes continues to grow. In this thesis, I explore one way that architects can design affordable housing that is intrinsically sustainable. In the past, subsidized low-income housing has been built as if to provide a short-term solution—as if poverty and lack of affordable housing is a short-term problem. However, I argue that adaptable architecture is essential for the design of affordable housing that is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Further, architects must balance affordability, durability, and adaptability to design sustainable solutions that are resistant to obsolescence. I conclude by applying principles and processes of adaptability in the design of Apto Ontario, an adaptable affordable housing development in the low-income historic downtown of Ontario, California (Greater Los Angeles). Along a new Bus Rapid Transit corridor, Apto Ontario would create a diverse, resilient, socially sustainable community in an area threatened by the rise of housing costs.

Building Social Capital : A Field Study of the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme in Singapore

Tovatt, Oliver January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a field study examining the effect of the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme in Singapore on social capital. Based on a multi-disciplinary approach and following the theoretical framework of bonding and bridging social capital developed by Robert Putnam and others, three different cases of the ABC Programme were compared, looking particularly at the level of blue-green landscape integration. The three cases comprised the ABC flagship project ‘Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park’ with high level of blue-green integration as well as the green and the grey section of the Ulu Pandan Park Connector with medium and low level of blue-green integration, respectively. Quantitative data was obtained by counting the share of park users engaged in social interaction and by surveying 330 park users on the perceptions of social interaction and integration. In addition to the quantitative data, a total of 60 face-to-face interviews were carried out in the three park areas, providing an in-depth understanding of the perceptions of the surrounding areas. The study concludes that the ABC Waters Programme is a strong generator of social capital, offering an attractive place for social bonding and to some extent also for social bridging.

Hållbar förnyelse av miljonprogramsområden / Sustainable development of areas from the Million homes programme

Jonsson, Anna, Madeleine, Thörngren January 2015 (has links)
Purpose: The Million homes programme is a major part of the total housing stock in Sweden. Substantial and costly renovations will be required to meet the modern-day requirements. The aim of this report is to explore how attractiveness and the social, economic and ecological sustainability of housing estates can be improved. The objective is to give hands-on proposals for improvement, presented in a program for action, which makes housing estates built during the Million homes programme more attractive and sustainable. Method: Case studies of three housing estates built during the Million homes programme has been carried out through literature studies and interviews, to investigate measures to improve the attractiveness and sustainability, and asses their impact. Findings: To increase the attractiveness, a mixed development should be obtained, measures must be done without increasing the rents too much, the residents should have a say in the renovation works, the area's reputation should be strengthened, and security and transportation should be improved. Social sustainability can be promoted through respect and communication with tenants, improved community, more people in motion in the area, employment of tenants and mixed ownership. To promote ecological sustainability energy-saving measures and investments in renewable energy should be carried out while taking the character of the buildings into consideration. Energy saving measures are often economically profitable. If the social sustainability is improved economic gains can be done, and a long-term perspective is important. To coordinate actions and preserve functioning components is good for the economic sustainability. The results are presented in a program for action, and the measures can be considered universal and applicable to Million homes programme housing estates, but must be adapted to the context. Implications: Sweden's environmental and energy goals can only be achieved if energy efficiency and resource saving measures are carried out in existing buildings. However, consideration needs to be taken between investment costs and effects of the taken measures. Energy saving measures provides both economic and ecological benefits. Social sustainability can be enhanced by working actively with social issues. Sustainable initiatives can increase the attractiveness. An increased attractiveness provides greater economic gains. The plan for action that has been developed is appropriate for use by property owners when the sustainability and attractiveness is going to be improved in housing estates from the Million homes programme. Limitations: Case studies of three housing estates from the Million homes programme have been carried out, with interviews as the primary method technique. The plan for action is synoptic, and must be adapted to each area's unique circumstances. The range of services in an area is important for the attractiveness, but is not discussed in this report.

The public spaces’ effects on safety and social sustainability in a segregated area

Karlsson, Ellen, Rönnbäck, Maria January 2018 (has links)
This study is analyzing how well executed community planning might minimize crime and increase safety in segregated city areas. The importance of actively involving citizens in decision making is vital to achieve social sustainability in a community. The purpose of the study is to create an exemplifying idea of how the district area could develop and excel in a positive way. The study is based on opinions from adolescents living in the area in question and will be compared and used in relation to police officers needs to be able to do their job in the area. To reach the results, workshops with the adolescents and an interview with a police officer took place. The goal is to develop an example of how to minimize crime in a segregated city district. The proposal of how to design the area is focused on the need for lighting, openness and sightlines as is asked for. It also includes places to gather, which also is needed in the area. The study can be used to form ideas of ways to form public spaces in socially problematic areas.

Seidl, Renata Aparecida 16 November 2016 (has links)
After the Green revolution, which began in the years 1960, agriculture took new directions thanks to the introduction of technologies and modern practices (genetic modification of seeds, intensive use of manures, and mechanization of the farms) which made it possible to intensify the production and raise the agricultural productivity. This model of production was formed within the conventional agriculture. However, after less than one century of development, this model of agriculture generated a number of concerns as well for its environmental impact and as well on public health. As an alternative to the conventional agriculture, the ecological agriculture - with its various denominations (Organic, Agro-ecological, Biological, inter alia) - has created its own marks in terms of production and marketing in local and global agro- alimentary systems. Its development was maintained thanks to growing demand and investment of large agro- alimentary companies and family farmers who converted their surfaces to an ecological mode of production. In this context, the inclusion and the adhesion of the small farmers to this type of agriculture is the main framework of this research. The thesis proposes therefore to carry out a reflection around the social sustainability of the farmers with this main question: “Is ecological agriculture a sustainable solution for all?” - which emerges within a social perspective through the analysis of quality of life of Brazilian family farmers and the French peasants, actives within market-gardening inside metropolitan regions of Belo Horizonte (Brazil) and the Metropolitan region of the Ile-de-France (France). This questioning cross the idea of “sustainability”, understood not only like safeguarding of the environment and the ecosystems, but also as taking into account the "social factory" and the living conditions of the individuals, in this case, of the farmers. Thus, the question of the quality of life (QOL) of the farmers – where self-esteem and the job satisfaction are intrinsically related to the social relations and the organization of the space of which they form part – is analysed. The results show inter alia, that the permanence of the production units depends on the conditions given to its owner, taking account of possibilities of developing a salubrious work (without health risk), prosper (with a sufficient financial return) and pleasant (as a source of satisfaction and social recognition). Our work reaffirms thus that ecological agriculture is in fact sustainable for all when the variables of the QOL of the farmers are potentiated and incorporated in the local agricultural development. In addition it's observed that the relation between the values of the QOL and the regional contexts reflects as well in the capacities of the farmers to carry their work as in their feelings of pleasure and self-confidence, i.e. of personal and professional wellbeing. The specificities around the questions of food security in the Brazilian context direct the future research towards arrangements of management strategies used in France and liable to be adapted to the reality of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region.

The social pillar of sustainability is under-represented in the context of SSCM. The present study addresses this social pillar and the gap related to governance mechanisms within the SSCM and addresses the following research question: how focal firms adopt social sustainability and what governance mechanisms are used to implement it throughout their supply chain? The paper proposes an empirical investigation through a multiple case study, composed of six cases. The research identified in the cases the antecedents of sustainability, that is, the elements that drive, enable and barriers the adoption of sustainability along the supply chain. A list of mechanisms has been elaborated and classified according to its type and its implementation, whether it is more direct (hands-on) or more indirect (hands-off). In addition, social issues were classified as to their incidence in cases and, for each governance mechanism, three types were established: central social issues, peripheral social issues and remote social issues. Considering the relationship between the types of social issues implemented and the intensity of governance mechanisms that address them, three profiles of social sustainability management in the context of SSCM are outlined and described: elementary, selective and extensive. Each profile was analyzed in the light of different theories: Stakeholders Theory, Contingency Theory and Behavioral Theory. A prominent point in the first theoretical lens relates to the salience of the supplier in the different profiles: in the selective profile, a strong group of suppliers acts as dangerous stakeholders, while in the selective and extensive profiles, suppliers generally act as claimants. The different roles of suppliers indicate that the supplier's greater or lesser incidence of power influences the extent to which the focal company can address social issues in its chain, whether it is more limited to central issues, or whether peripheral and remote issues are reached. Under the lens of the Contingency Theory, the present study indicates that social initiatives are related to factors such as (un)balance of power and dependence in the relationship with supplier. In addition, for management of social issues, approaching suppliers does not imply the reduction of governance mechanisms, especially in chains of greater criticality. In relation to Behavioral Theory, the results of the study represent concepts of this theoretical lens manifested in the scope of sustainability and social sustainability in SCM. Recognizing such contexts is a step towards overcoming biased behaviors in the SSCM decision-making process, such as: recognizing the range of possible social issues to address and prioritize those more aligned to the business rather than the simplest to address, acting more assertively and not according to the simplest; stimulate a more agile recognition of the need for more complex criteria to define the group of suppliers to be evaluated socio-environmentally in management programs.

A study of how digital infrastructure can contribute to sustainable societal development

Shaker, Shwan Najmadin January 2017 (has links)
In order to achieve a long-term sustainable society, it requires ecological, economic and socially sustainable development. One way of achieving sustainability is through digitization, but this requires robust and future-proof infrastructure. This thesis aims to contribute to increased knowledge about the possibilities that can be created by using high-speed broadband through the fiber, as well as demonstrating how the development of fiber can contribute to sustainable development. By answering the three research questions "What opportunities create high-speed bandwidth through fiber?", "What challenges are there for fiber expansion?" and "How will Sweden's municipalities work to facilitate the fiber expansion and contribute to sustainable community building?" the goal is to investigate different solutions for achieving sustainable social planning and community building through digitization. The methods chosen to meet the objectives are literature studies, interviews, mail contacts and meetings with a number of different people with different positions and roles in the public sector. The majority of this report's content is based on literature studies from Sweden. Other methods that have been applied complement the literature study. The results showed that high-speed broadband creates new opportunities and better conditions for care and education, increased growth, reduced climate impact and economic savings for individuals and business. The results also revealed that there are a number of factors that could hinder the development of an efficient expansion of high-speed broadband. One challenge is to create a common and unified permission process for land access in Sweden's different municipalities, with different geographic differences and different conditions. Another challenge is that there are insufficient cooperation and coordination between different public authorities. By increasing coordination between various internal functions, as well as the extent to which public authorities jointly plan the infrastructure work is key components in addressing these challenges. Furthermore, implementation of digital systems for managing municipal permission processes is an effective solution for promoting sustainable social development. The conclusion of this thesis is that today's and tomorrow's society is dependent on well-functioning IT-infrastructure. There are many obstacles and challenges that must be solved before sustainable development can be achieved. With proper planning, strategic work, and a holistic thinking these challenges can be transformed into new possibilities.

Product Service System : Co-Designing for Social Impact

Mukaze, Sabine, Velásquez, Denny Carolina Villamil January 2012 (has links)
Designing for Social Impact is an approach of social sustainability that presents an alternative way to improve living conditions in low income communities, of low income countries, by providing solutions that will enable them to meet their basic needs. Some current methods and tools used by social designers are focused on specific social aspects and often fail to engage communities to participate actively in the design processes. A non-linear Design Research Method was used to engage experts from the Design for Social Impact sector, Product Service System “PSS”, and social designers. A case study based in Gambia was used to study if “PSS” could encourage social designers to co-design with these communities as a way to promote positive solutions. Thus, strategic actions were collected from the research findings as a way to promote co-designing with involved stakeholders in low income communities. / ING/School of Engineering +46 455 38 50 00
