Polysemous modal verbs in Mandarin Chinese

Wu, Chun Hui Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship among polysemous modal verbs in Mandarin Chinese (hui4, neng2, yao4, ke3yi3, ying1gai1). It is found that the multiple modal senses encoded in the five polysemous modal verbs are closely-related. Through a careful examination on both synchronic and diachronic data of the five polysemous modal verbs, it is suggested that each of them exhibit three major modality types, including dynamic (ability, volition), deontic (directive, commissive), and epistemic (judgmental) modalities. At Stage I of the path of development, dynamic modality, as the core meaning of polysemous modal verbs, is extended to deontic modality through the cognitively-driven mechanism—subjectification, which is proposed by Traugott (1989). Then, epistemic modality is developed from deontic modality at Stage II through both subjectification and metaphorization (Sweetser 1990). After determining the direction and stages of the development path of the five polysemous modal verbs, a feature-based classification for modality types of Chinese modal verbs is provided in order to incorporate the differences and similarities among the three modality types (dynamic, deontic, and epistemic modalities). Finally, the interaction between modalities and other syntactic elements (predicates and arguments) is discussed with examples.

La marche nuptiale : subjectivation et technique de soi dans le rituel de mariage catholique / The wedding march : subjectivation and technologies of the self in catholic wedding ritual

Le Roux, Daphné 07 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis has a twofold objective. On the one hand, to examine the contemporary transformations of the Catholic wedding ritual in France based on an ethnographic observation of all the activities that comprise the rite — from preparation to celebration. On the other hand, to evaluate the relevance of Foucault's ‘‘technologies of the self’’ to reflect these activities. This dual dimension, ethnographic and theoretical, constitutes the basis of a ‘‘field philosophy’’ whose methodological issues are defined. The first part of this work is of an epistemological nature: it presents and discusses different ways of understanding contemporary Catholic rituality. The second part focuses on marriage preparation: we then explore the exercises set up by priests and lay animators of the association Centres de préparation au mariage (CPM). In particular, the reflective dimension of these devices (dispositifs) is highlighted, leading to the adoption of new narrative patterns and new communication techniques to engage in their couple's life. The third part focuses on the celebration of union: it is then shown that, in the context of contemporary Catholicism, the effectiveness of this rite can only be fully understood if it is considered in the light of the preparation that conditions it. Two general issues emerge from this work. On the one hand, the contributions of subjectification theory to ritual analysis are presented. On the other hand, ethnographic observations allow us to critically deepen Foucault's theory.

Descrição de aspectos linguísticos em uma narração de futebol transmitida por rádio / Description of linguistic aspects in the radio live commentary of a football (soccer) match

Madrid, Rodrigo Lazaresko 23 September 2016 (has links)
This dissertation describes some linguistic aspects of football (soccer) radio live commentary. The broadcast of a match between the Corinthians-SP and Flamengo-RJ teams, which occurred in 2013, was recorded live. The main commentator was Deva Pascovic, on CBN radio station. The second half of that match was synchronized with the television shootage, exhibited by TV Bandeirantes. That synchronization was made on the ELAN software, developed by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. On the same software, a transcription of the speech from the live commentator as well as from other commentators and reporters was made. The video shootage was also transcribed, through a tiers system developed during this study for visual information on football TV broadcast based on the transcription system under development in the Language, Interaction, Cognition Lab at the University of São Paulo (McCleary & Viotti, 2007; McCleary et al., 2010). Some linguistic aspects described in this study are related to speech events elements beyond the segmental content as relevant facets of the signifying process in football live commentary. The study describes then the sequencing of viewing frames (Langacker, 2001) and prosody as linguistic unities in a broader view of the live commentaries and usage events of the expressions pra fora and sair when the research focus was approximated to the construal (Langacker, 2000, 2008; Taylor, 2002) processes. We show that events live commentary made to a listener who does not experience them in presence needs not only shared knowledge beteween speaker and hearer about the speaking event context, but also specific strategies in order to conventionalize linguistic unities that go beyond the language usage of everyday.

La sexualité adolescente entre éducation et confidence : expérience et expertise de la sexualité adolescente / Teenage sexuality, between education and confidence : Teenage sexuality experience and expertise

Fernandes, Anne 25 September 2017 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on the study of the sexual education within educational structures and online chat rooms as seen through the prism of the sociological study of expertise. The notion of expertise is understood as a counseling activity when dealing with a given problem. This work focuses on the development of sexual education within specific circumstances, as well as the tools and experiences used and the dynamics at play within its development.Through the analysis of sexual education at school, which is largely conducted by school nurses, and the study of online forums, a number of situations involving expertise can be observed. Within the first of these abovementioned settings, the education is instutitionalized and maintains fixed parameters ; in the second setting however it remains up to debate, including on many subjects that aren't be covered at school. Also, one must bear in mind that both these educational construction in the subject. Teenage sexual education spans several registers. Teenage years are seen as a dangerous time, when undue risks are taken and focus is maintained on the responsibilities implied within the introuction to sexuality. It is about protecting oneself from diseases as well as negative experiences and to become a responsible individual. A new regulatory regime is shown within this study, whereby education no longer relies on coercitive dimensions and an asymetrical relationship, but gives way to an egalitarian relationship which is based on dialogue and the sharing of confidential information, based on inward-looking disciplines

Pour une philosophie de la subjectivation. Etude sur Michel Foucault / For a Philosophy of the Subjectivation. A Study of Michel Foucault

Fujita, Kojiro 11 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis seeks to shed light on the philosophy of the subjectivation in the work of Michel Foucault. From our perspective, the early Foucault (from Madness and Civilization to The Order of Things) strived to overcome the philosophy of the subject in order to advance a thought of anonymity, but the later Foucault (from The Archaeology of Knowledge to The History of Sexuality) attempted to take up the problem of the subject again beyond that anonymity so as to finally elaborate the concept of subjectivation. Hence, our thesis inquires how the later Foucault continued to re-examine the subject in three anonymous domains – knowledge, power and ethics –, in order to extract from Foucault’s works what one can finally call the philosophy of the subjectivation. Thus this philosophy consists of three elements: the logic of the subjectivation, the politics of the subjectivation and the ethics of the subjectivation. Since most existing studies are related to the later element, our thesis is primarily devoted to the former two. The first half of the thesis addresses the logic of the subjectivation to reveal our existence in the system of knowledge, and the second half deals with the politics of the subjectivation to reveal our existence in that of power. Theses researches can no longer be accomplished by traditional thoughts (realism of scientific objectivity, phenomenology of transcendental subjectivity, epistemology of ideal forms, hermeneutics of fundamental meaning, etc.), which are never foreign to the philosophy of the subject, but only by Foucault’s thought itself, which is well destined to the philosophy of the subjectivation. Thus, our thesis reads Foucault’s thought by this same thought itself in order to extract the philosophy of the subjectivation from there. However, ultimately, it not only explores the concept of subjectivation, but also paradoxically sheds light on what one can call the “counter-subjectivation”.

In the course of the history of pedagogy college in Brazil, many uses of literature have been made, crossed by different relations of knowledge and power. The aim of this research was to realize the ways that the literature emerges in a pedagogy course, as well as the way its uses cross the structure of the students, applicants to this career, from pedagogy college, in a Rio Grande do Sul University. The programs of the subjects for this course were analized since its begining till the present days(1957-2012). Besides, a focus group was held with academics enrolled in sixth and seventh semesters, at that university. Based on the systematization of this empirical data and the analysis made with archegenealogy inspired from the concepts of subjectivation and literature from Michel Foucault, it was possible to establish four modalities that talk about how the literature was used in this academic context, during the course of more than six decades of existence of this course, being denominated of: philosophical literature, militarized literature, therapeutic literature or other sensitivity and literature for teaching. So, it was realized some regularities and displacements enphasizing here the literature reading, taken from figures from masters, moving towards, the strong entry, for the metodological direction, focused in the child literature teaching, around the 80’s and, more contemporaneously, to a self-help relationship with literature, as smoothing of life and the relationship itself. It is highlighted that some gaps still take place in academical routines, when some literature subjects are being treated, simply through observation or also through some teaching practices .

La fabrique du sujet vulnérable : étude sur l'expérience du cancer de la prostate / The fabric of the vulnerable subject : study on the prostate cancer experience

Braverman, Louis 19 June 2017 (has links)
This research focuses on the experience of prostate cancer. Its aims to document the lived experience and the medical care of this illness from a sociological perspective that enters into the making of subjects. To what extent can men with prostate cancer and relatives produce new forms of subjectivity given the vulnerability they are enduring? To answer this question, the study relies mainly on the articulation of ethnographic observations carried out over a period of five months in four public hospitals with a corpus of 70 semi-directive interviews conducted with patients, relatives and health professionals. Firstly, the adoption of a socio-historical approch allows us to highlight the situated expression of subjectivities and opens the way to an analysis of processes of subjectivation in the age of biomedicine. Secondly, the experience of prostate cancer is described as intertwined with knowledges and practices of biomedicine. Thirdly, the lived experience of prostate cancer in everyday life is analysed. Besides the contributions of this reaserch to the sociology of cancer and masculinities studies, the conclusion focuses on the construction of vulnerable subjects.

Olsson, Johan January 2011 (has links)
Titel: Fostran som pedagogiskt projekt. Bilden av ”problembarnet” i statens offentliga utredningar. (The bringing up of pupils as an educational project. The image of ”the problem child” in governmental committees).    This study focuses on the image of the problem child as it appears in two texts (from the 1940s and 1970s) of governmental committees on Public Health (SOU) and the new school law (Ds 2009:25, will be implemented in July 2011). By image is meant that the image of the problem child is constructed for specific purposes rather than being “found” in an objective reality.    The aim is to describe, analyse and compare discourses on “the problem child” as they appear in the texts. The method used is an application of discourse analysis based on a social constructionist approach and the work of Michel Foucault. Among the Foucauldian concepts used are discourse, governmentality, power and subjectification. In the final chapter possibilities and limitations of Foucauldian analysis are discussed. The discourses that influences the image of the problem child, in the different texts, have three major continuities operating, the talk of a school which aim is to not separate the pupils, the use of the term behavioural disorders and finally the pedagogical methods that individualises, differentiates, compares, places in hierarchy as well as shuts out pupils from the classroom. The emphasize of the teachers role to give knowledge to the pupils rather than bringing them up separates Ds 2009:25 from the two SOU-texts where the emphasize is placed on the bringing up of the pupils. Potential effects concerning the problem child because of this change in the pedagogical discourse are discussed.

This argument thesis is situated in the composition between creation in experimental dance with animals and research in Social Psychology. We propose that the expansion of the subject and subjectification notion, in the articulation of Science Feminist Epistemologies, Technology and Society Studies, especially the debates and researches around Animal Studies, potentiates both Psychology and dance in the development of subject and subjectification amplified notion that embrace human-animal assemblages. It is not a simple enlargement for dance with the tradition of the human dancer and dancer, nor for Social Psychology - external to the controlled experimental contexts of the laboratory - whose focus has been the human subjectivities. Far from an experimental relationship with animals, what we invite to think is an experimentation in the strong sense of the term, that is, in its multiplicity. In the dance-research we connect the feminist practice of telling and retelling partial histories of human-animal relations that function as gaps in unique histories that exclude animals as actors in their plots to find nonanthropocentric modes of speech (DESPRET; STENGERS, 2012). There are many stories happening on the partially tamed banks. There are many stories being gestated in encounters between humans and nonhumans that do not necessarily imply domination, do not necessarily create borderline human-animal kinship. Counting them is for us to engender transformations in the individual and collective modes of living that we are creating; is to insert themselves, as researchers and researchers in Social Psychology, in the naturescultures that affect us and that, therefore, we can no longer ignore.
