The art of arts : theorising pastoral power in the English Middle AgesWolf, Johannes January 2018 (has links)
Gregory the Great described the government of souls as ‘the art of arts,’ a sentiment that the Fourth Lateran Council would echo in 1215. This thesis takes as its fundamental proposition that this ‘art’ can be understood as a ‘craft’, one that is responsible for producing and maintaining a Christian subjectivity marked by introspection, inwardness, and a strong distrust of externalities. Using a theoretical framework influenced by Michel Foucault I suggest a tradition of administering and producing these subjects through ‘pastoral power.’ Charting the trajectory of these ideas from the ascetics of the early church through to fifteenth-century Middle English texts, I explore the dynamics produced by texts invested in producing this specific form of subjectivity as they expand their reach from a specialised audience of monks to an increasingly laicised vernacular sphere. This investigation is broken into two halves. The thesis begins with a re-reading of Michel Foucault’s theories of power and subjection. Here I suggest that there are important conceptual connections between Foucault’s concept of ‘discipline’ and medieval approaches to the care of the soul. The first half of the thesis stresses the longue durée development of pastoral power, focussing on two particular historical moments. The first of these chapters engages with the pastoral and monastic thinkers of the early church, who developed two overlapping regimes – that of body and spirit. The second turns to the Ancrene Wisse, arguing that the it responds to the developments of twelfth-century spirituality by suggesting a form of spiritual engagement that is increasingly imbricated in the mundane world. The second half of the thesis focuses on a number of texts produced in Middle English during the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Two chapters focus on a collection of pastoral texts produced in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The first focuses on the hermeneutic dynamics of these texts whilst second chapter assesses the use of documentary imagery and theories of legal accountability in the same texts. The final chapter suggests that certain proto-autobiographical texts, represented by the work of Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe, are conditioned by the concerns and dynamics of pastoral power, which also affects the practices modern readers bring to bear on them.

Making sustainable higher education : a critique of scholarly responsibilities, professionalisation and praxisMüller, Susanne January 2013 (has links)
Since the late 20th century, Western society has been permeated by a pervasive, yet fundamentally contested sense of ecological crisis. While diagnoses abound, shifts in critical forms of Western science and the so-called ‘postmodern condition’, raise a recurring issue for debate: the positioning and qualities of scholarship in relation to societal transformation. Reflexively, if not normatively, academia is challenged to reflect on the implications of the ‘storying’ and ‘re-storying’ of scholarship vis-à-vis the socio-ecological, such that both scholarly processes and ‘ends-in-view’ foster an intellectual field of inquiry and engagement that is more relevant to - if not responsible for - a ‘deeply’ democratic, ecologically sensitized social order. Providing a major line of response regarding this broader background, ‘sustainable higher education’ currently emerges as a highly complex phenomenon that takes shape across a range of sites and contexts in relation to a variety of local and specific academic practices. It may thus be variously understood as a strategy for addressing the environmental and sustainability crises identified at the Rio Earth Summit, as a matter of academic concern and field of intellectual inquiry, and as a regulative ideal for policy, professionalism and practice in the ‘greening’ of higher education. The present study documents the associated politics of (knowledge) change, by taking a broader interest in how sustainable higher education, as a social and discursive practice, is currently constituted and reconstituted across differently positioned academics from a range of academic sites and contexts, namely universities in England, Austria and Germany. Focusing on the academic knowledge practices in relation to the emergence of sustainable higher education, the study proceeds to analyse these through an integrated lens of academic subjectivity; i.e. with this not being conceptualised as a clearly ‘bounded’ or ‘fixed’ entity, but rather an entangled, relational and practical matter of culturally (re-)productive self-production. Working with empirical material generated from episodic interviews and via a set of heuristic tools developed from poststructuralist and critical hermeneutic theories, the study thus illustrates the contemporary constitution of subjectivities in/of sustainable higher education, illuminating how a historico-cultural reading of subject configurations and activities is suggestive of a wider structural shift. Working across diverse configurations of the policies and politics of the field, this shift is often expected, if not inferred, to be catalytic in transforming increasingly abstracted forms of knowledge/cultural production towards ‘re-responsibilitisation’. The study further exemplifies how this can be associated with the broader conditions of an ‘eco-politics of unsustainability’, which seems so hard to overcome precisely because it is made manifest at more practical levels through the quite mundane ways in which academics go about their daily business. Yet, a counter reading is possible too: this points to the perhaps ‘wild(er)’ aspects of these always-also affective practices through which new relationalities can emerge. Taken together, the study’s increasingly integrated readings thus work towards the exploration of how academic subjectivities might be re-made if positioned at the intersections of social inquiry and practical philosophy in the lives of ‘everyday sustainable higher education makers’.

Lecteur de soi-même : le sujet contemporain à l’épreuve des lectures numériques / Reader of oneself : the contemporary subject in the light of digital readingsMayer, Ariane 26 October 2016 (has links)
This work offers a philosophical research about the transformations of literary reading under the digital environment. We question the issues of the new forms and techniques of textuality regarding subjectivity, such as it builds and interprets itself in light of reading. This research is based on two hypotheses. The first one, stated by Proust in “Le Temps Retrouvé”, is that “every reader, as he reads, is the very reader of himself”, equating reading to a privileged subjectivity matrix, a place where the self comes out and discerns itself. The second one was expressed by the neurologist Maryanne Wolf: “we are how we read”. Beside the story we are told, the empirical practices and techniques of the reading act also participate in our ontological constitution. Today, those empirical elements are disrupted by the digital that gives birth to new mediums, textual forms and reading spaces. Our work is at the encounter of a series of technological transformations and the hermeneutic metamorphoses they arouse. If the book has long been a mediation to read oneself and a model for understanding the world, then what becomes of our relationship to the others and to ourselves when the book gives way to novel objects? We approach digital literary reading as a prism through which questioning the becoming of contemporary subjectivity. This research invites us to meditate on the renewal of aesthetic imagination, social imagination and existential imagination aroused by the experience of the electronic text.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender, analisar, descrever e também fundamentar / The present study deals with the investigation and elucidation through theoretic and bibliographic search the complex process that involves the concept of existential anguish, emphasizing individual and concrete existence under the Sören Aabye Kierkegaard’s reflexive point of view, famous philosopher of existence of the nineteenth century. It will be emphasize the fundamental importance of his oeuvre in relation to the constitution and construction of the human subjectivity, remarking the individual and concrete existence and besides, the liberty of choice facing situations of the individual’s life and how much this provokes a feeling of anguish in his routine. Kierkegaard expresses that alterity is the very place in which the self make its affirmation dialectically in this own identity. According to Kierkegaard, to exist is to join inatruly and satisfactory way in order to win all the obstacles of life, including anguish. Because it’s a matter of fact that to Kierkegaard to exist is to compromise in it self

In his first works, Michel Foucault claims we live in a society of control, where subjectivity is shaped and produced by the current system. The relation between discourse, truth and power allows us to realize that the subjectivity in modern society is produced by discourses which enunciate truths that are not always everyone’s truths, that is to say there is a constant production of ways of thinking that are not always wished for, but rather induced. In a first moment the present work studies that the kind of ethos that modern society has built is attached to a model of existence, and in a second moment how we can recuperate the subject’s power while creator, analyzing the notions of ethics and aesthetics of existence. The hypothesis proposes to think the formation of subjectivity from a creative/creating constitution that takes place through certain praxis, namely the realization of virtues. In order to achieve that, Foucault goes back to the Greeks, searching for concepts such as epimeloû heautoû (the care

This work proposes a study, conducted by enunciation theories, about language and subjectivity. It makes use of intersubjectivity notions and references proposed by Benveniste and of formulations about adolescence elaborated from the point of view of psychoanalysis. It intends to investigate, considering linguistic marks which are indicative of referential processes found in rap lyrics, the representation that adolescents make of themselves and of reality, as well as their possible utopia. By doing this, the study looks for elements to understand which subjectivation are engendered in the current situation, marked by the emptying and the pulverization of the references and the utopias that supported previous generations. It departs from the presupposition that language is the condition for subjectivity (1); the trivial act of staging the language introduces the one who speaks in his/her talk (2); the reference center in discourse is the subject of enunciation; thus all language elements have to be analyzed in

Considerações feitas no campo dos estudos psicanalíticos a respeito da adolescência auxiliam-nos a compreender os atravessamentos que perpassam a consti / This study focuses on the participation of young people in a religious group of Catholic orientation, called ONDA, which belongs to a parish pastoral in the region of the Vale do Rio dos Sinos. Based on the way twenty young participants build the referent ONDA, at workshops and interviews, this research analyzes the role of this activity in the process of appropriation of a place in the symbolic space by these young people. Benveniste’s enunciation theory, presented as a meaningful theoretical frame in order to transcend the intra-linguistic analysis and allow the study of intersubjectivity as a condition for the construction of subjectivity, bases this research. Discussions realized in the field of psychoanalytic studies on adolescence helped us understand factors that are part of the constitution of young people as a subject of/in language. Results of this study reveal that these young people find support in the relation with their peers and with the leader and, also, that being part of a group favors the s
