Technology Integration and Higher Education : Comparing Brazilian in-service teachers’ perspectives about the use of technological resources before and during the pandemic

Silva, Sidney Pereira Da January 2022 (has links)
Recent research has persistently emphasized that education is broken and that the solutions lie with technological resources in educational institutions and teaching methods (Teräs et al., 2020), which has generated a techno-solutionism approach of Edtech companies (Mirrlees & Alvi, 2019). The outbreak of COVID-19 exposed significant challenges and limitations when adapting education to the digital environment highlighting a need for a deeper understanding of the integration of technology with education. While some scholars focus on technological artefacts as an object of study at the intersection between neuroscience and technology (Healy, 1998), others focus on the importance of pedagogy and the challenges of researching pedagogy in a context of rapidly increasing technological advancement (Hellstén & Reid, 2008).Through investigating Brazilian teachers’ experiences and challenges of integrating technology within higher education before and during the pandemic, the study contributes to furthering understanding of the intersection between pedagogy and technology. The application of an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design contextualizes the teachers’ voices and enables contrast with the existing literature in international contexts. The study’s findings suggest that most of the teachers included technology in their classes to some extent. The teachers’ personal preferences and course discipline, however, can influence how they would incorporate technological resources in higher education. Moreover, the university’s policies and support structures also influence teachers’ decisions and motivations regarding technology integration. The study recontextualized the growing discussion in global research surrounding education and technology by using prominent scholars in the field to form a foundation through which to understand if similar issues may also appear in the Brazilian context. The main differences in the findings of this research set the case of Brazil apart in that the teachers noticed that the course discipline can be a factor in deciding whether or not to use technological resources in their classes at Brazilian institutions. The discussion about the course discipline did not appear in the international literature review focusing on technology-enhanced learning and teachers’ attitudes toward technology integrations. Moreover, this research facilitated the creation of the Inverted Mirror instrument, which was developed during the literature review process to create a visualization of comparisons. The Inverted Mirror instrument is used here to compare and visualize what is unseen or hidden during the comparison of teacher experiences in order to explain what occurs when technology is used in the classroom.

This study attempts to answer the following research questions: (1) what are some major demographic variables that may influence middle school teachers’ TPACK level? (2) How are teaching belief, TPACK level, and knowledge building environment related to one another? (3) Can teaching belief help predict middle-school teachers’ TPACK level? (4) Can higher TPACK level help teachers to cultivate more creative knowledge building environment? Data from 390 samples were obtained from middle school teachers in Taoyuan, Taiwan, through an adapted survey. The statistics employed for data analysis include descriptive statistics , Pearson's correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follow:(1) Teachers who had less years of teaching experiences, or taught non-examination-oriented subjects, or had experiences of using teaching platforms or used Internet more often, tended to have higher TPACK level. (2)There were significant correlations among teaching belief, TPACK level, and knowledge building environment. (3)Student-centered teaching belief was found to predict teachers’ TPACK level. (4) Higher TPACK level was also found to predict teachers’ capacity to foster more creative knowledge building environment. Based on the findings, relevant conclusions and suggestions were also made for teachers and educational policy-makers.

Increasing the impact of ICT in language learning : investigating the effect of teachers' ownership of microblending CALL in the classroom within the WST model of ICT use

Bish, David William January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to address why the adoption of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) within the language classroom is so varied, and its success so unclear, despite fifty years of investment and research. The huge promise of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) driven results has created an imbalance in language teaching, where initiatives are brought about from outside the classroom, with teachers held accountable for their adoption. My reading of the literature is that lack of consideration of the teacher’s role in implementation of classroom technology has led to mismatched expectations and performance. If the nature of the teacher’s contribution is recognized, I believe that this can lead to more effective use of ICT, which I have set out to show. My study, based on a survey of 319 EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers across the international group of 31 schools in which I work, seeks to put the teacher back into the picture by examining where their enacted beliefs in social constructivist pedagogy best align with classroom use of digital technology. I coin this emerging praxis ‘microblending’, a pedagogy rooted in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory and contemporary methodology, and I seek to demonstrate its relevance in this study I test the viability of measuring teacher’s microblending readiness through application of Technology Acceptance Modelling (TAM) in an EFL setting to produce a model that explains the variation in classroom use of ICT. My model is based on a critical replication of the WST (‘Will, Skill, Tool’) model, a TAM model which has so far only been used in mainstream classroom teaching. I have updated, created and piloted new instruments within the scope of the study, which are now already in use within the institution where I carried out my investigations. Using both linear regression and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) techniques I explored how these measurements of the learning environment can explain a teacher’s application of technology. This first attempt appears to explain over 89% of the variation in classroom use of technology, which already exceeds the predictive power of several contemporary models in use in parallel fields of education. Given further work to refine and apply the model, a valuable improvement could be made in how teachers work with ICT in the language classroom for improved learning outcomes.

An Intervention Study on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the ESL Classroom: English teacher perspectives on the Effectiveness of ChatGPT for Personalized Language LearningEn

Mohammad Ali, Abrar January 2023 (has links)
The recent release of AI tools for public use allows for the development of novel teaching approaches for goals that often present challenges in the classroom, such as the need for personalized learning materials. The current study enlists a four-week ChatGPT-based personalized learning intervention in tandem with a teacher questionnaire and interviews in two upper-secondary schools in Southern Sweden to investigate English teacher perceptions of the benefits and challenges of using AI for personalized language learning. In addition, the intervention investigates the potential effectiveness of personalized learning assignments using ChatGPT on the development of students’ grammar abilities in a specific, local classroom context to both address a local need at the school in question and to serve as a proof of concept for more broad-based, future research on the use of these tools for this purpose. The questionnaire revealed that teachers initially had some concerns regarding the accuracy, reliability, and practical implementation of such tools. However, the intervention was found to significantly reduce grammar errors in student writing, and in follow-up interviews, teachers reported feeling more receptive to such approaches after interacting with the tools and seeing the beneficial results. These findings demonstrate that teachers may be hesitant to implement AI tools, which underscores the importance of training and first-hand use for promoting their successful adoption into pedagogical practices. In addition, the findings suggest that AI-based tools for personalized language learning may also be successful in a broader educational context. Finally, certain limitations, such as the small sample size, are acknowledged which emphasizes that further research is necessary to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of personalized learning using AI-based tools like ChatGPT.

Winter, Julia Franziska January 2014 (has links)
Teaching science with one computer per pupil:opportunities and challenges from teachers’ perspective

Teachers' understanding and use of digital play for language acquisition in Grade R

Van der Westhuizen, Leonie Magdalena 11 1900 (has links)
Teachers tend to use traditional teaching methods, even though young learners are more digitally oriented. The purpose of this study was to analyse teachers' understanding and practices in grade R classes to clarify their use of digital play for language acquisition. The participants consisted of eight grade R teachers at one selected primary school in an urban area that had access to digital technology. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as a theoretical framework informed this study. This qualitative single case study generated data from teacher participants and their interaction with the learners. The data generation included semi-structured individual interviews, focus group interviews, and non-participant observations. Analyses to answer the research questions were conducted by means of thematic analysis. The main finding was that grade R teachers have some knowledge and understanding of digital play and they are willing to try new games, but they feel they need to know more about digital technology and the use of digital games for language acquisition. Recommendations include the need for the development of more digital games relevant to language acquisition and for teachers to adopt relevant pedagogies to benefit from available digital games. A similar study in a rural area and a comparison between this study and such a study will then be useful in determining teachers' understanding and use of digital play for language acquisition. Hierdie studie is geïnspireer deur Bronfenbrenner se ekologiese stelselteorie as ʼn teoretiese raamwerk. / Barutiši ba na le go šomiša mekgwa ya sekgale ya go ruta, le ge e le gore baithuti ba baswa ba na le tsebo ya theknolotši.
