L'hermès à portrait dans l'Occident romain : fonctions, contextes et significations / Portrait Herm in the Roman West : its functions, contexts and meanings

Andrès, Sarah 01 December 2018 (has links)
This study aspires to acheive a catalog of portrait herms in the Roman West in order to apprehend the semantic meaning of this original figurative support. Erected since achairc times by the crossroads and doors of greek cities, herms become, under roman influence, pedestals for portraits and not only representations of divinity. Those portraits can be divided into two iconographical categories : retrospective ones reproducing features of historical figures such as Homer and Menander, and those of private citizens, sometimes dedicated to their Genius and raised in the atrium of their house. More than a simple stylistical and iconographical analysis of this corpus, this study tries to give an historical and cultural reading of thoses sculptures, from the workshop to their exhibition contexts. This approach must allow the depiction of all the actors involved in thoses dedications, the clarification of thematic choices as of the reasons for choosing these abbreviated images, the definition of their place in the private space of the Roman villas in the context of domestic cults or that of the otium.

Electronic, Spin and Valley Transport in Two Dimensional Dirac Systems

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation aims to study and understand relevant issues related to the electronic, spin and valley transport in two-dimensional Dirac systems for different given physical settings. In summary, four key findings are achieved. First, studying persistent currents in confined chaotic Dirac fermion systems with a ring geometry and an applied Aharonov-Bohm flux, unusual whispering-gallery modes with edge-dependent currents and spin polarization are identified. They can survive for highly asymmetric rings that host fully developed classical chaos. By sustaining robust persistent currents, these modes can be utilized to form a robust relativistic quantum two-level system. Second, the quantized topological edge states in confined massive Dirac fermion systems exhibiting a remarkable reverse Stark effect in response to an applied electric field, and an electrically or optically controllable spin switching behavior are uncovered. Third, novel wave scattering and transport in Dirac-like pseudospin-1 systems are reported. (a), for small scatterer size, a surprising revival resonant scattering with a peculiar boundary trapping by forming unusual vortices is uncovered. Intriguingly, it can persist in arbitrarily weak scatterer strength regime, which underlies a superscattering behavior beyond the conventional scenario. (b), for larger size, a perfect caustic phenomenon arises as a manifestation of the super-Klein tunneling effect. (c), in the far-field, an unexpected isotropic transport emerges at low energies. Fourth, a geometric valley Hall effect (gVHE) originated from fractional singular Berry flux is revealed. It is shown that gVHE possesses a nonlinear dependence on the Berry flux with asymmetrical resonance features and can be considerably enhanced by electrically controllable resonant valley skew scattering. With the gVHE, efficient valley filtering can arise and these phenomena are robust against thermal fluctuations and disorder averaging. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 2017

Berthe Weill (1865-1951) : sourcière méconnue de l'art moderne / Berthe Weill (1865-1951) : unrecognized Diviner of Modern Art.

Le Morvan, Marianne 15 December 2017 (has links)
The ambition of this thesis is to define the role of the art merchant Bethe Weill, in the birth of modern art. Behind the discovery of a considerable number of artists who were later crowned with success by the market, her legacy remains misunderstood and mostly forgotten. In her multiple roles as sponsor and discoverer, mediator and editor, she initiated, with the opening of her gallery in 1901, a drive toward new painting, a movement until then bereft of a spokesperson. A feminist pioneer, she used all the means of communication at her disposal to disseminate her opinions, daring to make her gallery walls and columns a site for political statements. This study hopes to elucidate her position in the hierarchy of the modern art market, looking at the societal context which encouraged or restrained her initiatives. In a career spanning forty years, this woman from a poor Jewish family lived through two world wars and established herself as a major figure in Parisian cultural life. Without a pre-existent archival foundation to which one might refer, the archives relating to the B. Weill Gallery had to be entirely reconstructed, giving initial results which validate her pivotal role in the careers of major artists of the first half of the twentieth century. Through the intermediary of these archives larger issues are raised in connection to research on provenance: questions of authentication, but also on Anti-Semitic spoliations during the Occupation and the difficulty of access to market data in spite of the legal measures in place to guarantee patrimonial probity.

Leite, Maynar Patricia Vorga January 2012 (has links)
The research on which this dissertation is based was developed at the Penitenciária Feminina Madre Pelletier‟s security gallery, by means of a discussion and writing group developed with women in the process of carrying out freedom-depriving penalty. We explore the everyday experience of imprisonment, unveiling the peculiarities of group work in a security gallery, as well as the relations among living, knowing and power. In such a context, the study of limit both as a form of border and a mode of contact embraces non-rational and non-conscious aspects of cognition as inherent to life itself. Taking as starting points the notion of autopoiesis, the processes of subjectivation and invention of oneself and of the world, we consider that regarding the living being as an individual – and he human as a case of “alive” – is just a possibility among several others. Thus, the experiences of the collective within an institution where the individual is the main mode of subjectivation, enables to put into question the individual as the foundation on which Law roots its right to criminalize the individual and, as a consequence, apply punishment on an individual basis. Therefore, in this work, the prison is taken as a political option of segregation and of delinquency proliferation. Upon trying to refresh prison flight lines, it was also emphasized the existence, regardless of the circumstances, of life production beyond survival, by cartographing the ways of self-production that pullulate in despite of imprisonment. Besides that, it was made an attempt to produce new theoretical basis within the field of Psychology in defense of penal abolitionism. Having cartography for a method, group discussion and writing became agencements, and writing itself, the notebook and the group became devices. This dissertation is chaotizised in rhizomes and fractals, as a way of writing the life inside the enclosures and the enclosures within the lives, the whole process yielding some “problem openings” as the final result.

A shared ideology of death ? : the architectural elements and the uses of the Late Neolithic gallery graves of western Germany and the Paris Basin / Une idéologie partagée de la mort ?

Pape, Eléonore 09 December 2016 (has links)
Amidst the pan-European phenomenon of the rise of numerous collective burials in the second half of the 4th millennium BC appear so-called gallery graves in two distinct regions, notably in Hessia and Westphalia, in the Paris Basin, and in scarce numbers also in Belgium and the Netherlands. These collective burial vaults of diverse construction materials and of rectangular shape are organised in a short antechamber reserved to the deposit of collective grave good assemblages and in a long chamber sheltering numerous deceased individuals, which were deposited successively. The similarities of the structures of both main study regions in terms of architecture were already noted since the 20th century and the nature of the ties binding latter have since then been interrogated in the line of diffusionist approaches. The resulting presumptions of the direction of unilinear diffusionist processes changed according to the progress of dating methods and processing of radiocarbon samples. With the present research work, the issue was revived anew, and this time via a twofold comparative analysis: A first, empirical comparative analysis is destined to check at what level the collective structures correspond to a structural stereotype and to inform us in terms of potentially regional variations. A second, qualitative comparison included three Galeriegräber and six allées sépulcrales in order to determine to what degree their uses conferred or differed according to distinct architectural and regional features. The resulting observations are finally argued jointly concerning to what extent we finally can consider them the remains of a shared ideology of death.

Ressonadores de microdiscos com região ativa nanoestruturada bombeados por injeção eletrônica / Microdisk resonators with nanostructured active region pumped by electronic injection

Mialichi, José Roberto 17 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Newton Cesário Frateschi / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-17T02:03:42Z (GMT). This doctorate¿s thesis presents the growth of InAs quantum dots directly on high bandgap InGaAsP (?g=1420 nm) barriers to be used as the active region of microdisk resonators with emission in the C-band (1520¿1570 nm). Based on photoluminescence and atomic force microscopy experiments, the occurrence of inter-diffusion on the InAs/InGaAsP interface is calculated, suggesting the presence of Gallium and Phosphorus in the quantum dots (QDs) composition. Based also on the inter-diffusion results, the optical gain of the InAs QDs is calculated. Subsequently, microdisk resonator whispering gallery modes (WGMs) are calculated and employed to predicting the cavity quality and confinement factors, as well as the threshold current. A PIN diode with an active region based on InAs QDs was grown by Chemical Beam Epitaxy (CBE) for the fabrication of current injected microdisk resonators. Microdisk fabrication process is performed using photolithography, reactive ion etching and InP selective wet-etching. Focused ion beam is used to replace the plasma etching in order to reduce the roughness of the disk¿s edge. Microdisks resonators are characterized electrically and optically and the measurements are analyzed based on the theoretical results presented along this thesis. Based on these measurements, optical losses caused by disk¿s edge roughness and local heating are added to our simulation tool, resulting in better agreement with the experimental results. Finally, we present the development of hybrid resonators using organic polymer deposited directly on inorganic microdisks integrating an organic active medium with inorganic resonators for optoelectronic applications. Since then, public policies have prioritized the internalization of Brazil, with the construction of Goiânia (1930s) and Brasilia (1960s) increased the production and flow of agricultural products in the region. In this context, the municipality of Catalão did not escape this process of expansion of the agricultural frontier, and with this the region suffered and undergoes still profound transformations, mainly of socio-environmental nature. The present study has as main theme the Revegetation Program carried out in the area of the Ribeirão Samambaia Basin, in the municipality of Catalão (GO), from 2003 to 2015, whose objective is to analyze the effectiveness of this Program in order to diagnose possible mitigating actions in the Riparian areas of the watercourses that make up the catchment area. The interest for the discussion of the theme arose due to the fact that, in the municipality of Catalão (GO), the use and occupation of the soil, due to the socioeconomic transformations have influenced the recent urban growth and expansion, subjecting the Ribeirão Basin Samambaia to the alterations resulting from the parceling of the soil and the creation of infrastructures, leading the urban meshwork over these areas with consequent population densities, resulting in the suppression of the primary vegetation remnants, including the riparian environments along the banks of the courses. water. Through field research, in the Ribeirão Samambaia Basin area, it is noted that there has been an increasing process of environmental degradation and the consequent restructuring of landscapes. For the accomplishment of the research, procedures were adopted that obeyed the sequence: theoretical, field and laboratory research. The present work studies the Cerrado Biome and its main characteristics, being of fundamental importance for the balance of the other Biomes. The Cerrado Biome undergoes profound environmental transformations, mainly in the phytophysiognomies of forest formations, especially the Matas de Galerias. In this context, in the area of the Ribeirão Samambaia Hydrographic Basin, Catalão (GO), there is intense land use and occupation, where soil has been gradually modified, both by urban and rural activities, through the practices used to modernize Field and consequent planting in large areas and urban growth. The water basin is mainly responsible for the public water supply of the city of Catalão, which is under the responsibility of the Superintendency of Water and Sewer of Catalan (SAE) and Rural Communities of Area of the Ribeirão Samambaia Basin, in 2003, started a Revegetation Program, implementing vegetation recovery techniques in the basin area. Through the indicators that measure the stage of development of the seedlings, canopy formation and natural regeneration, it can be concluded that the results obtained in this study allow to demonstrate that the positive effectiveness of the Program occurred, but it was not possible to observe a well delineated planning and monitoring For this work and this compromises the continuity of the recovery process of the area. As a result, it is necessary to review the Revegetation Program implemented, seeking to renew its techniques and adapt them to the current reality that lies in the watershed areas of the Basin. The different recommendations can serve as reference for general application, taking into account the need to observe the particularities inherent to each location.
