Previous issue date: 2015-04-07 / The main objective of this research is to understand how resources, capabilities and business
strategies for seeking competitive advantage are treated in companies that work with low
differentiation products and services in dynamic environment when subjected to ruptures. As
a theoretical foundation it was used the resource-based view (RBV), including the concepts of
competitive advantage, value creation, generic strategies and dynamic capabilities. The
chosen dynamic market was from prepaid cards for travel, loaded with foreign currency,
which was impacted by government rule changes in 2011 and 2013. It was adopted an
exploratory descriptive study in a qualitative methodology. The survey was conducted
considering perceptions from the point of view of managers. A multiple cases study was held
in which twelve executives were interviewed through a semi-structured script, in four
companies (Midsize Bank, Brokerage Exchange, Exchange Bank and Retail Banking),
representing for 77% of Travel Prepaid Card market share, The data was treated and analyzed
based on content analysis method. It was noted that the resources had their strategic attributes
modified and their relevance has changed, specifically in the cases studied. It was possible to
observe a change in the way the companies manage existing resources and capabilities,
incorporating new and transforming others. However, it seems that companies have not
looked systematically and intentionally to their resource and capabilities base in times of
sudden environment changes. It was also observed that the strategic positioning remained
unchanged regardless of environmental changes. In short, the strategic management of
resources and capabilities becomes more complex in dynamic environments with sudden
changes.
repentinas.

Previous issue date: 2006-03-14 / Authors such as BARNEY (1991, 2001), HAMEL and PRAHALAD (1995) argue that the Resources of the Firm can be an important source of competitive advantage. Despite the fact
that these sources are represented by several resources (a strategy, a product, a competitive differential), several studies say that the capacity of the Firm in promoting organizational learning, are fundamental to obtain sustained competitive advantage. The theories show that organizational core competencies, source of innovation, need to be mapped and improved continuously, in an organizational learning process. Therefore, a People Management Model that promotes double looping learning and innovation will be a source of sustainable competitive advantage. This study intends to investigate how the trinomial: Innovation, Organizational Learning and People Management Model, happen in a company that identifies itself as an innovative company.

Previous issue date: 2010-08-03 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / According to the Resource Based View (RBV), Human Resources (HR) are presented as a major factor in the search for competitiveness. Therefore, it is common to find studies that show people as valuable resources, rare, non-replaceable and non-imitable. Thus, people are considered, at least in discourse, such as Intellectual Capital, as scarce and hardly imitable, are seen as generators of value and therefore, as a strategic resource and source of competitive advantage. This study sought to identify those attributes relevant to the management of Intellectual Capital, according to the perception of managers of Sanofi Aventis Brazil from the perspective of the Resource Based View (RBV) in order to propose indicators for the management of these elements, aligned economic environment of the pharmaceutical industry. The research is a case study, supported by a protocol, and which held the triangulation of information obtained in the content analysis of interviews and statistical analysis of data obtained by questionnaire. Factor analysis was used for data reduction. The results showed that there is alignment between the perception of senior management with an insight into operational management.

This work is about 'Social and Environmental Resource-Based Strategy and its Impact on the Causal Ambiguity' and aim to answer the following research question: What is the relationship between social and environmental resource-based strategy and causal ambiguity? More specifically, the creation of causal ambiguity through social and environmental resources and capabilities, so it makes sense to consider causal ambiguity as a dependent variable, and the social and environmental capabilities independent variables (predictors). In this line, social and environmental capabilities have causally ambiguous characteristics advocated by Reed and DeFillippi (1990), namely, tacitness, complexity and specificity. These characteristics are essential for the resource or capability has the potential to generate causal ambiguity. Based on the theoretical framework, I established which resources and capabilities is closely linked to social and environmental issues, while having causally ambiguous characteristics. Thus, the following resources and capabilities emerge from the literature, (a) social and environmental orientation, (b) stakeholder engagement, (c) environmental improvement, and (d) human capital. Using multiple linear regression, the dependent variable (causal ambiguity) was regressed in function of the independent variables (that formed the four mentioned constructs). As a result, only corporate governance (social and environmental orientation construct) and society / community (stakeholder engagement construct) impacted positively on the causal ambiguity. Finally, the use of causal ambiguity as a dependent variable is a really new and relevant for future studies in the RBV, as well as the relationship between social and environmental strategy and causal ambiguity. Thus, it can be stated that the results of this exploratory research have potential to broaden the discussion on the intersection of RBV and CSER studies, and open several possibilities for future research, as marked in the conclusions of this work.

政府對企業併購的影響 / The Government Influence of Corporate Mergers Decision吳一炬 Unknown Date (has links)
Our research used the cost of capital credit supply and resource-based view to explain the changing in investment decisions after implement policy. The government policy effect will increase the willingness of investment. Meanwhile, we used the credit supply theory to explain the changing of external financing constraints in companies increases investment. Our results showed that based on the resource-based view, government policy significantly affects the investment decisions without having impact on external financing.

Intellectual capital measurement practices in the Swedish banking sector : An explorative study / Mätning av intellektuellt kapital i den svenska banksektorn : En explorativ studieNordmark, Max January 2017 (has links)
Ever since its conception, Intellectual Capital has undergone substantial transformation both in terms of its general definition and its prevalence in external reports. Although consistently focusing on intangibles, over time, intellectual capital has become an area focused on intangibles in accordance with the basic principles of the Resource-Based View regarding how assets can be used to acquire sustainable superior performance. Proponents of intellectual capital adhere to its framework and classification of different intangibles, claiming that it offers increased understanding as to how value is derived from intangible assets. The understanding of the measurement and subsequent reporting of intellectual capital being value creating is, however, a disputed claim. The field of intellectual capital has also been stated to be suffering from a lack of empirical studies focused on specific sectors. Although organisations from among the banking sector have been included in empirical studies within the realm of intellectual capital, there are few such studies which include Swedish banks, let alone studies focused on the Swedish bank sector. The question of whether organisations among the Swedish banking sector are dedicating themselves towards measuring intangible assets included in the intellectual capital framework has so far not been closely studied. Neither has a study focused on exploring the underlying motivations as to why organisations within this sector would choose to dedicate themselves to such work been made. By means of a qualitative research method focused on interviews with respondents from three banks belonging to the Swedish banking sector, this study demonstrates that although intellectual capital is virtually unknown within the sector, examples of the organisations’ measuring practises of intangibles included in the intellectual capital framework are numerous. By implementing resourced-based view and legitimacy theory, the primary motivation behind organisations implementing such measurements is suggested to primarily be to better understand and utilise the resource. The findings of this study also suggest that disclosure of intellectual capital is not viewed as legitimising, despite similarities between organisations in the sector leading to expressed wishes of certain intangibles being disclosed for differentiation purposes.

Previous issue date: 2015-03-12 / Firms face challenges of various natures in different competitive environments, depending on the target market, the business model and corporate strategies. Operate in international markets is a constant challenge on the schedule of firms in the global environment to start their internationalization process. Are challenges since the capitalization of resources, new markets and customers, development of competencies and capabilities, directed to the strategic formation of the company's internationalization, among others. This study focuses on three theoretical areas: project management, internationalization of companies and the resource-based view (RBV). Thus defined the following research question: "How the project management maturity contributes to internationalization of Brazilian companies from the perspective of resource-based view?” Particularly analyzed the contributions of mature project management for internationalization features in international Brazilian companies from the RBV-VRIO analysis, ie, examined whether the mature nature of the management of projects adopted by the selected companies are considered strategic resources, with implications competitive, sustainable competitive advantage for the company. The research strategy adopted was a multiple case study of descriptive exploratory approach within-case analysis and cross-case method, in internationalized Brazilian companies from different business segments. As a result, the study found that the project management features: sustainability of the project, involvement of stakeholders, defining objectives and strategies, change management and risk management, have the greatest contribution to the internationalization of selected companies, with implication of competitive advantage sustainable, considering the RBV-VRIO analysis. Thus, the research presents contributions for companies that are or intend to initiate a process of internationalization, so the process is clearer and driven to a better use of market opportunities.

The chief digital officer position and its firm-level impact: A literature review on CDO research and an analysis of CDO presence and performance implicationsHiller, Maximilian Moritz 28 September 2021 (has links)
With rapidly advancing technologies and digital innovations, companies face the need to adapt to the new digital world and to digitally transform their business models. For executing the digital transformation process, more and more companies decide to entrust a new C-level manager with all challenges and complexity arising from digital transformation, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO). As the CDO position is still fairly new, research in this field is limited and requires further attention by scholars. Therefore, this study aims to address three fundamental research questions concerning the nature of the CDO position and corresponding implications not only to inform practitioners but also to enrich the scholarly discussion on CDOs. By understanding existing literature on CDOs based on a systematic literature review, this thesis answers the first research question regarding what characterizes the CDO position. Building on these insights and drawing from a comprehensive theoretical framework consisting of upper echelons theory, contingency theory, human capital theory and the resource-based view, hypotheses are developed for answering research questions two and three. While the second research question focuses on factors, which influence CDO presence within a company, the third research question addresses the impact of a CDO on company performance. Based on a large-scale sample of panel data comprised of S&P 500 companies, generalized estimating equations models, propensity score matching and fixed effects regression models are exploited in order to derive answers for both research questions two and three. As influencing factors for CDO presence, the results show that especially
early tenure CEOs and CEOs of larger companies are more likely to employ a CDO. Although no evidence can be observed for positive performance implications of CDOs, also given different company contingencies, the insights of this study's analyses show that certain CDO characteristics as well as in combination with CIO presence and varying CEO characteristics are more favorable over others in terms of company performance measured by return on assets and Tobin's Q.

The impact of intellectual property rights from publicly financed research and development on governance mode decisions for research alliancesStaphorst, Leonard 12 May 2012 (has links)
This study consisted of two distinct research phases, performed within the context of the South African Council for Science and Industrial Research (and its current and potential research alliances). The purpose of the study was to develop a decision making model that would enable strategists at publicly financed research and development organisations to analyse and predict governance mode decisions, as well as select optimal governance mode structures (ranging from quasi-market structures, such as once-off contracts, to quasi-hierarchy structures, such as research joint ventures) for research alliances. During the qualitative first phase, the study aimed to identify impact domains within South Africa’s new Bayh-Dole-like Intellectual Property Rights legislative framework that consists of the Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research and Development Act, as well as the Technology Innovation Agency Act, which could potentially influence research alliances (based on the Transactional Cost Economics, Resource-based View and Real Options Approach perspectives) with publicly financed research and development organisations. This was followed by the quantitative second phase, which attempted to verify the validity of a value-mediated governance mode model that included the highest ranked impact domains identified during the first phase as formative indicators for the perceived Intellectual Property Rights regime strength uncertainty factor. A qualitative online survey amongst senior managers at the Council for Science and Industrial Research, followed by Theme Extraction combined with Constant Comparative Method analysis, as well as a weighted frequency analysis, constituted the research methodology employed during the first phase’s identification and ranking of impact domains within the South African legislative framework. This phase demonstrated that the highest ranked impact domains (primarily driven by the Transactional Cost Economics perspective) included the choice of Intellectual Property Rights ownership, state walk-in rights on undeclared Intellectual Property, and benefit-sharing policies for the creators of Intellectual Property. The second phase consisted of a quantitative online survey, distributed amongst current and potential research alliance partners of the Council for Science and Industrial Research, followed by Structural Equation Modelling of a value-mediated governance model that included, amongst others, the perceived Intellectual Property Rights regime strength as an uncertainty factor. This phase revealed not only that the impact domains identified during the first phase could be used as formative indicators of the perceived Intellectual Property Rights regime strength, but also that stronger perceived regimes are positively related to the preference for quasi-hierarchy research alliance governance modes. Furthermore, it established that the expected value of a research alliance, which was shown to be positively influenced by the strength of the perceived Intellectual Property Rights regime, acted as a mediating factor on the relationship between the perceived Intellectual Property Rights regime strength and the preferred research alliance governance mode. Keywords: Bayh-Dole, Formative Indicators, Intellectual Property Rights, Research Alliances, Real Options Approach, Resource-based View, Quasi-Market Governance Modes, Quasi- Hierarchy Governance Modes, Structural Equation Modelling, Transactional Cost Economics, Value-mediated Governance Model. Adaptation of Incumbent firms to changing environments: a dynamic capability perspectiveLeemann, Niklaus 16 May 2022 (has links)
This publication-based dissertation examines the phenomenon of incumbent adaptation to changing environments with a dynamic capabilities perspective. Its core consists of four research papers that are self-contained and have been developed to be published in double-blind peer-reviewed academic journals. This intellectual body is framed with an introduction (Section 1) that introduces the current state of research on dynamic capabilities, summarizes the four research papers, and presents the current publication status of the work; the concluding Section 6 presents the overall contributions, limitations, and avenues for future research. The first research paper (Section 2) is a systematic literature review of empirical studies that identify idiosyncratic dynamic capabilities in practice. Its main finding is a taxonomy of dynamic capabilities that introduces 19 dynamic subcapabilities and connects them to existing conceptual literature. The second research paper (Section 3) is a longitudinal single case study of Axel Springer, a leading media corporation that has exercised dynamic capabilities to convert from a print publisher to an internet company. The study finds iterations, overlaps, and interconnections between sensing, seizing, and transforming. Based on the findings, a generalized conceptual model for dynamic capabilities in incumbent adaptation is constructed. For the third research paper (Section 4) an action research approach is applied to explore how managers’ mental models can engender erroneous resource cognition. The study discovers five cognitive biases that may distort resource cognition. The fourth research paper (Section 5) is a teaching case study building on the strategic challenge for Somedia, a Swiss media firm, to diversify from its declining legacy business by leveraging its resources and capabilities. This publication-based dissertation enhances the understanding of incumbent adaptation and presents applicable implications and recommendations for practitioners.
