Impact of free-ranging dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus) on wildlife in a suburban area.Claudia Bueno de Campos 17 December 2004 (has links)
The goals of this study were to quantify the population of free-ranging dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus) in suburban areas; to describe and compare the diet of both species, and to estimate their predation pressure on the wildlife, at Campus " Luiz of Queiroz " of the University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, SP. During the months of July 2002 and January 2003, visual observations and scats collection of dogs and cats were accomplished along a transect line. The sampled area comprised 0.276 km², or 3.2% of the 860ha of the Campus area. Physical characteristics of each individual (species, race, fur, sex, size and natural marks) were registered for the calculation of the abundance of both species in the sampled area, as well as the number of encounters a day and the environment (rural and suburban). The diet was analyzed through scats sterilized, washed, dried and sorted. Their components were identified with the aid of bibliographical references. The importance of each item was expressed as the percentage of the total number of items found and as the percentage of an estimate of the consumed biomass. Breadth and overlap niche were calculated through the indexes of Levins and Pianka, respectively. The results of estimate abundance of free-ranging dogs and cats in the sampled area were of 42 and 81 respectively. Dogs and cats are more abundant in suburban than rural environment (T = 3.78, p <0.001, N = 55; T = 8.38, p <0.001, N = 55 respectively) and the cats are more abundant than dogs in suburban environment (T = 6.76, p <0.001, N = 55), even though there was no significant difference between the abundance of dogs and cats in rural environment (T = 0.82, p = 0.46, N = 55). The results of diet analyses indicated that free-ranging dogs and cats are opportunistic predators of generalist habit. In 234 samples of scats 1212 occurrences of 57 items (68.4% of animal origin, 15.8% of vegetable origin and 15.8% formed by no food items) were detected. Considering the items of animal origin found in the diet of both species, invertebrates were the most consumed, followed by mammals (dogs: 57.05% and 25.15%; cats: 63.24% and 20.51%, respectively). Niche breadth (B) was 0.4463 for dogs and 0.4892 for cats. Niche overlap (O) was almost complete (0.97108). The consumption of mammals was estimated between 16.76 and 25.42 kg/ind/year for dogs and between 2.01 and 2.9 kg/ind/year for cats. This is a possible reason for the low population densities of small wild mammals in the study area.

Quality of urban green space: a proposal of evaluation index.Ivan André Alvarez 12 April 2004 (has links)
The aim of this work was to propose a new index, amongst other already known, that evaluates the quality of green coverage in relation to its ecological role in urban environment. To elaborate this index, simple random and stratified random sampling were compared with the census, in order to assess the best qualitative and quantitative method to do the tree inventory. A survey of sidewalk arborisation, as well as trees per kilometre, total number of trees and the Shannon Diversity Index (IDS) of sidewalk trees were evaluated. Amongst the studied indexes were the Index of Open Spaces for Public Use (IELUP), Percentage of Open Spaces for Public Use (PELUP), Index of Green Coverage for Urban Areas (ICVAU) and Index of Green per Inhabitant (IVH), by means of digital plan, aerial photography and videography for the areas covered by vegetation measurement. Santa Cecilia District in Piracicaba City, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, was the object of study from 2000 to 2003. The qualitative sampling survey of trees was carried out by simple random sampling, as found to be the most adequate to survey sidewalk trees. Data obtained for 2003, the year chosen to propose the new index, were: a) IELUP varied from 11.42 to 41.62m2/inhab, using videography; b) PELUP varied from 1.52% to 2.89%; c) ICVAU was 25.76m2 (coverage + tree canopy) and 16.48m2 ( tree canopy ); d) IVH consisted of 101.96m2/hab (coverage + tree canopy) and 65.21m2/inhab (tree canopy). The index for the evaluation of green spaces, so named Index for Quality of Green Urban Space (IQEVU) was one of the subsidies to study and propose the Index for Quality of Green Urban Space with Ecological Role (IQEVUe). The parameters for evaluation of such index were the shading from sidewalk trees; hydrology, Carbon sequestration and temperature influence for all green space. In this study, the proposed IQEVUe seems to be adequate and coherent as an evaluation method for the benefits of urban vegetation, providing subsidies for the planning and management of cities.

Qualité territoriale, qualité du vieillissement : contribution du géographe / The quality of the territory, quality aging : a contribution of the geographerChapon, Pierre-Marie 06 December 2011 (has links)
The aging of the French population is a well- known topic but its effects are more important than is usually thought. The dwelling, the urban living habits, the services and amenities have to be adapted to seniors. The geographer tackles the problem through the relation of elder people to their living territory by using scientific tools provided by environmental psychology, and by referring to medical data. This research work has been made at the professional request of ICADE, one of the leading estate developers in France. The author applies very concrete methods, such as the use of mental maps and GPS trackers, so as to grasp the needs of seniors as accurately as possible. Several experiments have been conducted, at different scales and in different surroundings -Lyon and the Rhône-Alpes region, the Paris region, and also the city of Nice. The third part of the study consists in reflecting on the governance that would be the most efficient to implement the “gerontopôles” (structures associating geriatrics, medical and social care and gerontology).

Air pollution is a major environmental hazard with clearly demonstrable adverse effects on health and the environment. However, the measurement of populations’ exposure to pollutants such as particulate matter and ground-level ozone remains approximate due to the low density of sampling stations for these pollutants. Moreover, intra-urban spatial variation in the spatial modeling of pollutant concentrations has received little research attention. If anything, some studies have combined spatial interpolation and correlation with local factors; however, they do so without examining the effect of the weather regime (e.g., a temperature inversion) on the magnitude of these correlations. In order to overcome these shortcomings, this dissertation aims to evaluate new ways of characterizing the spatial and temporal distribution of fine particles (PM2.5) and ground-level ozone (O3) at the intra-urban scale. In particular, we developed a multivariable geostatistical model called “kriging with external drift” (KED) based on the integration of auxiliary variables into the process of estimating daily PM2.5 and O3 concentrations. Kriging is a form of spatial interpolation of data from measurement stations that are dispersed, while external drift is based on correlations between local conditions (road transport arteries, green spaces, etc.) and the concentration of atmospheric pollutants. In order to take account of temporal variations, especially those related to weather conditions, we designed these models around six synoptic weather classes based on daily meteorological data (such as temperature, wind, relative humidity and precipitation).
v
The results show that the integration of auxiliary variables (such as vegetation density and local industrial activity areas) in KED partly explains the intra-urban variations of PM2.5 on the island of Montreal, but that this contribution is variable depending on the weather conditions. Thus, when the correlations are very low, a simple spatial interpolation (such as the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method) is more accurate than multivariable interpolation, whereas for other synoptic conditions KED produces the most certain predictions. For this reason, we proposed a hybrid interpolation model (KED-IDW) that can adapt to different weather conditions. We have also shown, particularly in the case of O3, that KED improves the results obtained from ordinary kriging (without auxiliary variables).
This dissertation also allowed to evaluate the contribution of a spatial-temporal model—BME (bayesian maximum entropy)—in the estimation of the short-term effect of exposure to O3 on deaths in Montreal. The results suggest that this spatio-temporal model under the determined conditions (e.g., based on data from 12 measurement stations, for a territory of 1 310 km2) does not offer significant improvements to the estimation of the effect of exposure.
Overall, this dissertation contributes to the advancement of the empirical spatial modeling of air pollutants, namely by taking into account the adaptation to weather conditions as well as certain predictive meteorological factors. In this context, the dissertation opens up a promising path for improving the estimation of air pollution at the intra-urban scale and the capacity to assess population health risks through better characterization of exposure.

La protection juridique de l’environnement urbain au Niger : le cas de Niamey / The legal protection of the urban environment in Niger : the case of NiameyAbba Souleymane, Aïssata 21 January 2015 (has links)
For some, related to the underdevelopment, for others, attached blissfully to long walk towards the industrialisation, the problems of environment and urbanisation are essential, from their acuity, with all the “consciences”. The degradation of the urban environment is undeniable. , when they are not non-existent, the juridicisation of the concerns of the urban environment and the political discourse show cripples. Niger, following the example of all Africa, invites to dedicate its clearness with a reflection: how to govern the urbanisation and to ensure a healthy environment and of quality ? Thus, the legal protection of the urban environment in Niger returns to the analysis of the problems of urbanisation and the concerns of environment, in view of the implementation of the right. In the town of Niamey, the attacks with the environment, well-known, offer a “show” of desolation, insidiously affecting nature and the life. They threaten pubic health, while contributing to generate the loss of quality of life. With the crossing of the socio-economic challenges, the legal regulations protection improvement of living environment are not easily applicable. The politico-institutional divergences, the conflicts of laws, the permanence of the traditional rights and gravity rising from some practical cultural are at the origin of a complexity, which reveals the limits of the legal system of protection of urban environment. Our present production aims to analyze the right and the principles which govern the developement urban and the concerns of the environment through the evolution of environmental protection urban in the town of Niamey, while locating the place of environmental protection in the public policies.

Contribution à une sociologie politique de la jeunesse : jeunes, ordre politique et contestation au Burkina Faso / Contribution to a political sociology of youth : young people, political order and protest in Burkina FasoBonneval, Émilie Catherine Marie de 03 February 2011 (has links)
In spite of their unfavourable position in the hierarchies of power, youngpeople play a major role in the processes of social political change, which occur inthe Burkina Faso society. Hence, this social group seems to be a good instrumentto efficiently analyse policy, and moreover the processes of contestation anddomination at work in Burkina Faso. Indeed, young people develop numerousstrategies carried out in public places, which to varying degrees and termsconstitute forms of contestation against the political order. Thus by relying onthree categories of youth (unionised students, street youth, and young rappers orfollowers of the hip-hop movement), we sought to examine in a diachronicperspective, the nature of relationships of dominance at work in the Burkina Fasosociety. We find that the limited impact of these forms of contestations against theestablished order can be largely explained by the hegemonic context in which theyarise. Therefore, in our mind, the characteristic domination of the current politicalorder are based on “the strategies of mediation” and “neo-patrimonial cooptation”,which diffuse tensions and regulate conflicts, according to very precise procedures, with the aim to preserve the consensual image of the political culture. In ouropinion, these two dimensions constitute the pillars of a “political culture”, whichspreads out from a multitude of social spaces and creates a permanent, mediatisedexchange between rulers and those who are ruled.

Da gleba ao lote: dinâmica e produção da insustentabilidade ambiental urbana / From parcel to subdivision: dynamics and production of non-sustainability in urban environmentsGisela Cunha Viana Leonelli 07 April 2003 (has links)
The process of urban sprawl in the greater part of Brazilian cities has occurred in the absence of environmental and urban planning instruments. In practice, the urban growth of our cities during the last two decades has been guided only by the regulations for approval of urban subdivision as determined by the federal legislation on urban land subdivision (L.F. 6.766/79). During this period, the effort towards sustainable development has also been incorporated by urban centers, if only on a theoretical level, as an objective in municipal agendas through the behest of government, private capital, or public interests. In view of this, the principal objective of this study is to analyze the relationships between the degradation of the urban environment and the production of urban land subdivision. For this reason, a bibliographic review of the literature on the concept of sustainable development, focusing on authors whose works discuss the reality of Brazilian cities, as well as non-sustainable urban environment scenarios are included. A case study of the urban evolution of the municipality of Jaú, including the history of the initiation of subdivision processes, several thematic maps and non-sustainable land development proposal scenarios are included in the discussion. Finally, this study concludes that the process of urban land subdivision can reveal a dynamic which not only produces but confirms the non-sustainability of our cities\' environments, attributed to the collusion between government power, the real estate market and the limitation of the legal apparatus.

How the emotional experience of outdoor lighting affects path selection : How vertical, horizontal and objective lighting affects path selection in built outdoor environment.Johansson, Anna, Kensing Kindh, Sophia January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to find out how to illuminate our built outdoor environment, by finding out which light distribution principle of vertical, horizontal or visual objective lighting is the most effective for guiding people. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a full-scale experiment was conducted in a real outdoor environment where the three light distribution principles were set against each other in three scenarios. The 29 participants evaluated their emotional experiences through The Discrete Emotions Questionnaire (DEQ) followed by choice of paths and semi-structured interviews. The different data collection methods allowed us to investigate the light distribution principles in relation to each other through triangulation. The study's hypothesis that people choose to go against the light distribution principle that gives rise to the most positive emotions is confirmed, among other things, by the significant differences in the results. From which it is also evident that people is variously emotionally influenced by different light distribution principles, and that visual objective lighting is the light distribution principle that people prefer to go against. It was also found that it is important to be able to read the surroundings, the boundaries of the room and to have a line of sight, which can affect the emotional experience and the perceived security. The result suggests that the emotional reaction is more related to the experience of the light than the appearance of the place. This knowledge creates a greater understanding of how lighting can be planned in a built outdoor environment. Our modern lifestyle creates a need to be able to reside freely in the urban space even during the dark hours, which is why lighting design has become a crucial aspect of satisfying peoples need to feel secure. As these lighting systems affect social, economic and ecological sustainability, there is a need to find out how to effectively manage people with light. The study's results show good opportunities to be able to lead people to certain paths by using visual objective lighting. This can, in the long run, give the opportunity to reduce the climate impact through reduced energy consumption, since it is possible to reduce the total illumination by directing people through selected roads where the lighting is concentrated on selected objects.

A Museum of Contemporary Art is one that offers collections of painting, sculpture, drawings, and engravings; known as fine arts; and also new techniques such as installation, performance, video art, photography or sound art; which together are called visual arts.
In Peru, there are six museums that spread contemporary art, all of which are private managed and the main representative in Lima is the MAC, located in the district of Barranco. However, this institution does not have a metropolitan scope due to its remote location. To this is added that the district municipality in exchange for its future administration on land grants it for 30 years and that its collection is based on private donations or loans from the Ministry of Culture. This reflects the absence of the Peruvian state with respect to contemporary art, Peru being one of the countries with the greatest cultural wealth in the world.
The project takes place in the Historic Center of Lima, where 50% of all the museums in the capital are located, making the area a great cultural focus. The museum is located in an important urban environment where buildings of different architectural styles corresponding to different periods converge and seeks to join them through contemporary architecture that responds to the characteristics of the place by integrating alignments, heights, shapes, rhythms and materials; since despite the peculiarity of each building they manage to understand each other together. / Tesis
