Charron, Mélanie 05 1900 (has links)
PrEP may impact self-perceived risk for HIV infection and influence the sexual behaviors among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). The aims of this study were 1) to compare the sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyles, sexual and relational behaviors, history of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, and psychosocial factors related to risk-taking behaviors of gbMSM according to self-perceived risk for HIV infection, and 2) to examine the association between self-perceived risk for HIV infection and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) according to PrEP use. This descriptive and correlational study was a secondary analysis of data collected by the ENGAGE study which involved 945 gbMSM. Compared with gbMSM with lower self-perceived risk for HIV (n = 773), those with higher self-perceived risk (n = 172) differed in terms of sexual behaviors. An unstratified analysis showed high self-perceived risk for HIV infection to be associated with CAI (aOR: 2.87, 95% CI: 1.84–4.47) and PrEP use to be associated with CAI (aOR: 12.75, 95% CI: 3.43–47.41). A stratified analysis by PrEP use showed that, among gbMSM who did not use PrEP, only the association between high self-perceived risk for HIV infection and CAI was maintained (aOR: 2.91, 95% CI: 1.86–4.57). This study reveals the influence of risk perception on sexual behaviors and highlights the importance of a global approach to prevention of HIV infection.

"It is not only about the crime it is about more than that" : A qualitative study of factors considered by social workers when assessing juvenile delinquency.

Sadiku, Sofia, Sadiku, Teuta January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this essay has been to investigate and analyze which factors social workers, at the reception unit for children and young people, take into account when assessing the initiation of an investigation after a report regarding juvenile delinquency. The study is based on six qualitative semi-structured interviews with social workers who work at reception for children and young people in social services. Furthermore, all interviews were analyzed based on thematic analysis which as an overall, results in showing that the nature of the crime, parenting skills, the youth's behavior, previous knowledge, and the police's description of the youth influence the social workers' assessment of whether to initiate an investigation into young people who commit crimes or are suspected of crimes. Moreover, the social workers in our study clarified that the nature of the crime was important when deciding whether to initiate an investigation, given the seriousness of the crime. Parental ability was highlighted as a factor that either created concern for the social workers or reduced their concern when the parents demonstrated good parenting ability. Similarly, they also described the youth's behavior as a factor, considering the social workers' assessment, but the youth's behavior was of greatest importance for less serious offences. Previous knowledge of a young person resulted in the social workers many times deciding to initiate an investigation. In short and based on the results, we could conclude that the social workers' assessment is not only influenced by the crime itself, but an overall assessment of factors surrounding the young person is mainly taken into account.

Montesano, Gabrielle 12 1900 (has links)
Students who have recently immigrated that master French as their first spoken language are often directly included in schools in ordinary classes associated to their age group (MELS, 2014d). They generally do not receive any particular support since schools consider their competencies of the language of instruction sufficient. However, these students face significant potential obstacles (Gosselin-Gagné, 2018a). To promote their full potential, inclusion is a concept to mobilize (Potvin, 2013). Based on the sociocultural theory, it encourages school staff to recognize the heterogeneity of student profiles and intervene in an equitable and adapted way to answer their needs. This research project has 3 specific objectives: 1) to document the facilitators and obstacles to the situation of inclusion of French-speaking students who have recently immigrated in ordinary classes in elementary schools; 2) to identify inclusive and sociocultural practices that support the situation of inclusion of these students; and 3) to analyze their situation of inclusion according to the retained synthesis of inclusive education and its principles. This project is a multiple case study. Triangulation of the data was ensured by collecting them from three types of participants, namely French-speaking students who have recently immigrated, their parents and school staff involved in their situation of inclusion, with semi-structured interviews. The results are structured around three case studies of the situation of inclusion of three French-speaking students who have recently immigrated. Several facilitators, such as support from parents and from the classroom teacher, were named by the participants and identified following the analysis of the data collected. These students encountered various obstacles related to their learning in mathematics, the cultural and linguistic diversity of French, and the creation of friendships. These facilitators and obstacles were often named as being intrinsic to the students, which suggested a lack of reciprocal adaptation on behalf of the schools. In addition, a variety of inclusive and sociocultural practices that supported the situation of inclusion of these French-speaking students who had recently immigrated were raised, such as a thoughtful reception protocol, the explicit teaching of empathy, and the support for students in their socialization.

Utveckling av en kommunikationsstrategi kring hållbar vattenanvändning / Development of a Communication Strategy for Sustainable Water Use

Lindeborg, Petra January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to map Norrvatten’s communication regarding sustainable water usage with Norrvatten’s municipalities and the municipalities’ communication with the municipal residents. Furthermore, the aim has also been to map how other water and sewerage organizations have communicated about sustainable water use. Focus of the systematic mapping of the communication was on how the communication was carried out, what was communicated and for what purpose. To understand the communication, a didactic analysis was carried out based on the didactic questions of who, what, why, when, and how. The last purpose of the study aimed to develop basis for a communication strategy for Norrvatten's communication with member municipalities and municipal residents. This was done based on the results of the communication mapping and previous research. The communication intends to strengthen opportunities to handle potable water demand relative to sustainable use of water. The result showed that communication about sustainable use of water aim to change individuals' behaviors, to reduce the unnecessary use of water. The respondents also emphasize that communication should aim to increase the value of water and increase knowledge of the production and production capacity. In terms of content, the results show that the communication touches on concrete and practical actions, technical facts, and the water cycle in the larger perspective. Communication channels are suitable for different types of communication, where the results show that the hub of communication with municipal residents is the website and social media. Tonality, timing, and social aspects of the communication were also presented in the result as important parts. These have been included in the communication strategy. The communication strategy was developed on a model produced on the theoretical basis used in the study. The model has been presented as a foundation, while the results from the communication mapping of Norrvatten, the member municipalities and the VA organizations' communication together with previous research have constituted the content.

Towards an articulation of architecture as a verb : learning from participatory development, subaltern identities and textual values

Bower, Richard John January 2014 (has links)
Originating from a disenfranchisement with the contemporary definition and realisation of Westernised architecture as a commodity and product, this thesis seeks to explore alternative examples of positive socio-spatial practice and agency. These alternative spatial practices and methodologies are drawn from participatory and grass-roots development agency in informal settlements and contexts of economic absence, most notably in the global South. This thesis explores whether such examples can be interpreted as practical realisations of key theoretical advocacies for positive social space that have emerged in the context of post-Second World-War capitalism. The principal methodological framework utilises two differing trajectories of spatial discourse. Firstly, Henri Lefebvre and Doreen Massey as formative protagonists of Western spatial critique, and secondly, John F. C. Turner and Nabeel Hamdi as key advocates of participatory development practice in informal settlements. These two research trajectories are notably separated by geographical, economic and political differentiations, as well as conventional disciplinary boundaries. However by undertaking a close textual reading of these discourses this thesis critically re-contextualises the socio-spatial methodologies of participatory development practice, observing multiple theoretical convergences and provocative commonalities. This research proposes that by critically comparing these previously unconnected disciplinary trajectories certain similarities, resonances and equivalences become apparent. These resonances reveal comparable critiques of choice, value, and identity which transcend the gap between such differing theoretical and practical engagements with space. Subsequently, these thematic resonances allow this research to critically engage with further appropriate surrounding discourses, including Marxist theory, orientalism, post- structural pluralism, development anthropology, post-colonial theory and subaltern theory. 5 In summary, this thesis explores aspects of Henri Lefebvre's and Doreen Massey's urban and spatial theory through a close textual reading of key texts from their respective discourses. This methodology provides a layered analysis of post-Marxist urban space, and an exploration of an explicit connection between Lefebvre and Massey in terms of the social production and multiplicity of space. Subsequently, this examination provides a theoretical framework from which to reinterpret and revalue the approaches to participatory development practice found in the writings and projects of John Turner and Nabeel Hamdi. The resulting comparative framework generates interconnected thematic trajectories of enquiry that facilitate the re-reading and critical reflection of Turner and Hamdi's development practices. Thus, selected Western spatial discourse acts as a critical lens through which to re-value the social, political and economical achievements of participatory development. Reciprocally, development practice methodologies are recognised as invaluable and provocative realisations of the socio-spatial qualities that Western spatial discourse has long advocated for, and yet have remained predominantly unrealised in the global North.

A legal comparison between South African, Canadian and Australian workmen's compensation law

Jansen van Vuuren, Johanna Petronella 30 April 2015 (has links)
Workers’ compensation originated internationally because of the need to address the plight of workers and communities left destitute due to occupationally sustained disabilities or death. This study examines how the right to no-fault compensation developed in South Africa in comparison to the comparable law in Canada and Australia. Specific limitations regarding the right to workers' compensation pursuant to the South African compensatory laws were identified. Limitations identified include the persons falling within the ambit of the law, circumstances creating a right to compensation, the right to claims for increased compensation uniquely provided for in South African compensatory law and founded in the negligent conduct of employers as well as common law redress for damages. The background of the administrative remedy in the form of the right to compensation for occupational injuries and diseases ought to be seen in the light of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996. / Mercantile Law / LL. Who are we and what do we measure? : A case study of the dynamic relationship between performance measurement and organizational identity

Källgren, Marcus, Vejbrink Kildal, Adrian January 2022 (has links)
Performance measurements have been described as a tool by which management can communicate expected standards of behavior as well as a shared meaning among members regarding the intended direction of the firm. In parallel, the organizational identity field relies on the premise that members can answer the question “who are we as an organization?” through a sense of shared understanding. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the implications a performance measurement system has on the employees’ perception of “who we are“, related to the theoretical framework of organizational identity. This paper utilizes a qualitative research method, a case-based approach of a Swedish life science company which is conducted in an exploratory manner. The case company is chosen due to its contextual setting regarding the newly implemented performance measurement system, along with the inherent characteristics of the industry in general, which is typically considered to be incongruent with such quantitative measurements. The empirical data is collected through eight interviews with members from the chosen case company, as well as through internal documents describing its performance measurement system. The authors propose a revised theoretical framework in which performance measurements and organizational identity are investigated through a conceptual model which explores their dynamic relationship. The findings reinforce well-known ideas of performance measurements and organizational identity, along with providing new insights on the dynamics between them. When narratives create community: standing with children against stealing

Morkel, Elizabeth 30 November 2002 (has links)
At a Muslim school a group of boys with a reputation for stealing got the opportunity to share stories with communities of concern. Honesty meetings, honesty tests, honesty certificates and honesty celebrations formed part of narrative therapy ways of working together to try and regain reputations for honesty. As an outsider researcher/therapist I was confronted by stories of slavery, racism, unemployment, poverty, crime and violence. Through collaboration with a cultural consultant it became possible to do theology and pastoral care as a Christian in a Muslim community in a respectful and ethical way. The sharing of stories of pain and resistance contributed to the mutual care and community amongst participants from communities separated by racism and apartheid legislation as well as differences of culture and religion. Reflections on this journey mark a migration of identity for me as researcher, therapist, Christian and white South African practical theologian. / Practical Theology / M.Th. (Pastoral Theology)

"Disabled identities": pastoral work with people who are mobility impaired

Jacobs, Alvean Illinois 30 November 2004 (has links)
This thesis is about pastoral work with people who live with mobility impairment. The research address two main questions, namely "What are the implications of acquired mobility impairment for personal identity and collective identity?" and "How can we in Christian faith communities, through pastoral work, facilitate a sense of belonging and strengthen personal identity and collective identity for people who are mobility disadvantaged?" This thesis therefore addresses the problem of identity. Thus, a theoretical analysis from literature sources is undertaken to explore theories about narrative identity in relation to personal identity and the importance of the metaphor "belonging" to bridge the gap of personal identity to collective identity. Consequently, religious identity is discussed in relation to the notion of multiple identities and the importance of collective identity to shaping personal identity. The research questions are answered through a theoretical exploration of approaches to disability and qualitative, narrative empirical research is undertaken. A few people who are quadriplegic, a family member and an occupational therapist are interviewed and the recounting of their "stories" facilitated. The empirical research results in highlighting that the research participants' "stories" discloses a link between bodily restrictions and social restrictions to mobility. This combination works together to make social interaction very difficult and clearly influenced the transition from pre-quadriplegia to post-quadriplegia. Analysing the "stories" told by the research participants allows for critical reflection on a preferred pastoral work praxis to people living with mobility impairment. Narrative identity is linked with a theology of embrace and metaphors of "covenant" and "belonging" which expresses that faith communities should imitate the embracing love and compassion of the Triune God who through the act of suffering included all humankind. It provides the foundation for a preferred pastoral work praxis of "embrace" which can be practised holistically and actively through integration with the other practices of faith communities to facilitate a sense of belonging to a collective identity. / Practical Theology / D.
