Health and ill health in working women – balancing work and recovery

Work conditions within the public health care sector are physically and psychosocially demanding. This means that balancing work with recovery is essential for employees in order to avoid ill health and stay healthy. This thesis is based on four studies. Study I investigated the prevalence of upper extremity disorders (UED) in female dental personnel. Results showed that 81% reported UED. Consequently, interventions aimed at reducing these risks were called for. Study II investigated the health-related effects of two work-place interventions, physical exercise (PE) and reduced working hours (RWH). Health-improvements were more consistent in the PE group, suggesting that PE may be an appropriate intervention to reduce health-risks. However, there were no effects on recovery from work or fatigue, which may result from other factors, such as overcommitment (OC), that prolong or sustain stress-related activity. Study III showed that high OC was associated with poorer next-day recovery and increased fatigue. Also, OC was a more important predictor of lack of recovery and fatigue than were psychosocial work characteristics. This highlights the importance of considering perseverative cognitions in relation to recovery from work and fatigue, and has implications for interventions targeting work-related ill health. Study IV related lack of recovery and fatigue to cumulative biological risk, allostatic load (AL), and to individual biomarkers. Women with a profile characterized by fatigue, sleep difficulties and lack of short-term recovery had a 2.9 increased risk of AL. This was not shown in analyses of individual biomarkers. In sum, this thesis shows that recovery from work is an important factor in relation to women’s work-related health. Fatigue and recovery should be considered interrelated but distinct concepts and recovery should be assessed as an early risk factor for stress-related disease with early risk being investigated using AL rather than individual biomarkers.

Ändringar i övertidsregleringen : Innebörd och påverkan på skyddsombudens befogenheter

1 augusti 2011 upphävdes Arbetsmiljöverkets dispens för uttag av extra mertid och extra övertid. Istället är det nu upp till arbetsgivaren att bedöma ifall det finns särskilda skäl för uttag av extra övertid och extra mertid samt att bedöma att situationen inte går att lösa på annat rimligt sätt. Skyddsombuden får nu som ett led i regleringen möjlighet att göra framställningar till arbetsgivaren om det behövs för att säkerställa att arbetstidslagen följs. Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att ta reda på vilka omständigheter och situationer, som krävs för att en arbetsgivare ska kunna ta ut extra övertid och extra mertid. Uppsatsen beskriver den gällande rätten för uttag av extra övertid och extra mertid. Syftet har också varit att redogöra för hur skyddsombudens befogenheter har påverkats av de nya reglerna kring uttag av extra övertid och extra mertid. Uppsatsen har baserats på en rättsdogmatisk metod, vilket innebär att den har haft sin utgångspunkt utifrån olika befintliga rättskällor. Uppsatsen har varit avgränsad till att endast beröra den ändring som skett i arbetstidslagen och berör inte nödfallsövertid, studerande skyddsombud eller elevskyddsombud. Slutsatser som har dragits är att särskilda skäl för att göra uttag av extra övertid och extra mertid, kan vara tillfälliga arbetsanhopningar som varit omöjliga att förutse, oförutsedda sjukdomsfall eller förlust av spetskompetens som inte gått att ersätta omedelbart. Bedömningen att situationen inte går att lösa på annat rimligt sätt, ska göras i varje enskilt fall. Arbetsgivaren ska se över möjligheter som att rekrytera personal, hyra in personal eller utföra organisatoriska åtgärder för att lösa situationen. Skyddsombuden har sedan tidigare möjlighet att kontrollera arbetstidsfrågor, men endast rätt att agera, då det innebär en risk ur ett arbetsmiljöperspektiv. Nu har det rätt att agera vid minsta övertramp av extra övertid och extra mertid samt möjlighet att begära att arbetsgivaren ska vidta åtgärder.  Ändringen i arbetstidslagen ger skyddsombuden en begränsad rätt att agera, eftersom regeln kan avtalas bort genom kollektivavtal. Den nya regleringen i arbetstidslagen innebär en mindre ökning av skyddsombudens befogenheter. / On August 1, 2011 the Swedish Work Environment Authority repealed their exemption for the take out of extra overtime and extra additional time. It is now up to the employer to determine if there are special reasons for the employee to take out extra overtime and extra additional time and to decide whether the situation has not been able to be solved in any other reasonable way. Currently the safety representatives of the company get the possibility to make suggestions to the employer if needed, to ensure that the Act regulating the working time is enforced. The main purpose of this paper was to determine the circumstances and situations that require an employer to be able to charge extra overtime and extra additional time. The paper describes the established law for the collection of extra overtime and extra additional time. The purpose has also been to explain how the safety representatives’ authority has been affected by the new regulations around the extra overtime and extra additional time. The paper is based on the law of dogmatic approach, which means that it is based on various existing sources of law. The paper has been limited to only concern the change that has occurred in the Act regulating the working time and shall not affect emergency overtime and student safety representatives. The conclusions that has been drawn, is that the special reasons for taking out extra overtime and extra additional time, may be temporary situations of higher workload that were impossible to predict, unforeseen illness or loss of front edge competence that is not possible to replace immediately. In each specific case, an assessment shall been made, to determine that the situation hasn’t been able to be resolved in any other reasonable way. The employer shall review the possibility of recruiting new employees, hire employees from a temporary work agency or implementing organizational arrangements to resolve the situation. The safety representatives already have the authority to control issues regarding working time, but only the authority to act when the working time has developed in to a working environment problem. Now they have the right to act at the slightest infractions of extra overtime and extra additional overtime and the possibility to ask the employer to take action. The amendment to the Act, regulating the working time, provides the safety representatives with a limited right to act, because the rules can be negotiated through collective labor agreements. The new regulations in the Act, regulating the working time, results in a small increase of the safety representatives’ authority.

In final chapter there is brought closer the development of legislative conception of working time in Czechoslovak and Czech legislation.

A análise realizada tem como recorte a questão de gênero, partindo do pressuposto de que as vivências temporais das mulheres se multiplicam entre o trabalho doméstico e profissional. Foi realizada revisão bibliográfica sobre a relação dialética entre a opressão e a exploração na sociedade capitalista, o debate sobre a divisão sexual do trabalho e o uso do tempo das mulheres. E, de modo a aproximar de nosso objeto de pesquisa, também discutimos a questão da feminização do magistério, a intensificação e perda da autonomia do trabalho do professor no contexto das transformações nos processos de organização do trabalho ao longo do século XX e as emergências das políticas neoliberais na educação de modo a explicitar sua especificidade com a totalidade social. Esta revisão bibliográfica serviu como suporte de análise para os dados empíricos coletados tanto de documentos que normatizam o programa de ensino integral em São Paulo, quanto de depoimentos gravados e transcritos de professoras que trabalharam ou trabalham em escolas do interior do estado que aderem ao programa educacional. O estudo traz uma contribuição quanto aos impactos de uma política educacional de ensino integral e sua realização no cotidiano escolar a partir da vivência dos trabalhadores da educação, bem como frisa a importância de se adotar o recorte de gênero para a reflexão sobre a intensificação do trabalho docente. Concluímos que a política educacional não valoriza o trabalho dos professores das escolas integrais do estado, sendo a bonificação e as promessas de melhores condições de trabalho e de jornada integral em uma única escola um mecanismo de sedução para justificar um processo de trabalho cada vez mais intensificado. Nosso trabalho demonstra as consequências da realização de uma política pública sobre a condição de vida das mulheres, questão deixada de lado na formulação da política educacional, pois a intensificação do trabalho é multiplicada e intercalada com as responsabilidades profissionais e familiares das professoras. / This work presents a qualitative research about the intensification of teaching work, examining the main work-related disturbances on teacher’s activities of those professionals that are inserted on the “Full-time School Program”, a proposition of São Paulo State Education Office (Geraldo Alckmin -PSDB administration). The analysis departs from the gender issue, assuming that women’s experiences are amplified between domestic and professional work. We analysed the current literature on the dialetic relationship between oppression and exploitation on the capitalist society, the debate between gender-based division of labour and women’s time management. Also, in order to get closer to our subject, we also assessed the feminisation of teaching work., its intensification and loss of autonomy, in the context of the organizational changes of the working processes during the 20th century and the emergence of neoliberal policies on Education, to make explicit its specificity with the social totality. This review supports the empiric data analysis collected from documents that standardize the full-time schooling in São Paulo and recorded and transcribed testimonies of teachers that work or worked at countryside schools that participate of this educational program. The study shows the impacts of a full-time educational policy and its accomplishment on daily school-life from the experienced view of education professionals, and also highlights the importance of adopting a gender bias to analyse the labour intensification of teachers. As a whole, we conclude that the educational policy does not prizes the teacher’s work at full-time State schools, being the monetary compensation, promises of better work condition and full-time labour day in a unique school a seductive system that justifies the more and more intense working process. Our analysis shows the consequences of the accomplishment of an educational policy on the life conditions of women, an issue left behind during the elaboration of this policy, since the intensification of work is amplified and intertwined with the professional and personal responsibilities of female teachers.

Zdravotně sociální problematika u lidí po poranění míchy / Health and social problems of people after spinal cord injury

The aim of this work is to find out whether the people after spinal cord injury are motivated enough to get work and whether emplozers accept their demand of part-time working hours because of their health condition. The method of this work was research, the form of questionnaire. The research was carried out in Prague, The Union of Paraplegics in the Center Paraple. 82 out of 95 asked respondents took part in the survey. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part is theoretical. It presents brief anatomics description of spine and central nerve system, the change of health condition after spinal cord injury as well as the psychosocial trauma of people wirh spinal cord lesion. Next, the teoretical part deals with komplex rehabilitation-medical, social, pedagogical and working one. The thesis focuses especially on the working rehabilitation, referring to one elementary human rights-the right for work. It deals with the problem of the handicapped people unemployment and its characteristics. Next the chapter of working rehabilitation deals with the legislation of handicapped people unemployment, especially the new unemployment law n. 435/2004 Sb. Nowadays we can no longer ignore international documents concerning the employment of handicapped people, mentioned in the final chapter of the theoretical part. The second part of thesis is practical. It includes the resultsof both, the survey and the questioning by phone. The data are processed percentualy and graphically. every graph has its own description. Then the results are discussed. People after spinal cord injury are motivated to work. Yet, there are many obstacles to the employment of these people, which may result in their desillusion and demotivation to work. One of such obstacles is e.g. the fact that potential employers do not accept their demand of shorter working hours. The final part of the thesis includes the conclusion, the list of sources and supplement.

Labour and its conditions is a subject constantly in focus. Therefore this study aims to shed some light on different factors which constitutes the basis for the definition of optimal labour conditions, as well as creating a need for change of labour conditions. In this case these factors are changes in society and cultures. The study describes how different levels of society - government, employer and employee – are affected by, or wishes to affect the labor conditions in terms of location, working hours and leisure. In brief this study concerns how different goals and interests results in different definitions of the optimum at the different levels. For instance the goal of the state is to increase its GNP to better compete with other nations. The goal of the employer is, among other things, to increase the company’s profits and conquer the market. The employee’s interest, on the other hand, is mainly to get resources for survival and better terms of life.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva olika tillvägagångssätt för att minska personalomsättningen av sjuksköterskor. Metod: Studien har en induktiv ansats. Forskningsdesignen var en fältstudie, där vi har undersökt vad sjuksköterskor anser att sjukvården bör jobba med för att behålla sjuksköterskor. Det empiriska materialet har inhämtats genom kvalitativa metoder som vi sedan tolkat och analyserat till olika kategorier för att lättare kunna besvara vår frågeställning. Slutsats: Studiens resultat har visat på att det inte bara är en faktor som avgör hur sjukvården kan behålla sin personal, utan att olika faktorer i samverkan med varandra skapar missnöje och leder till uppsägningar. Därför är det viktigt att ta hänsyn till hur olika faktorer påverkar varandra för att minska personalomsättningen. / Purpose: The purpose with the study is to describe different ways to reduce employee turnover of nurses. Method: The study has an inductive approach. The research design was a field study, where we tried to deduce what nurses felt that the health care should focus on, to be able to keep the nurses from quitting. The empirical material has been collected through qualitative methods, which we then interpreted and analysed into different categories to be able to answer our question formulation. Conclusion: The result from the study shows that there are not only one factor which affects the health care’s ability to keep its personnel. Instead we have noticed that different factors conspire with each other, creating discontent which in turn could lead to nurses quitting their jobs. For this reason it is important to consider in which way the different factors affects each other in order to reduce employee turnover.

Syftet med denna undersökning var att kartlägga sjöingenjörsstudenters upplevelse av den organisatoriska och sociala arbetsmiljön ombord under deras fartygsförlagda praktiker, och i vilken utsträckning det påverkat deras framtida vilja att arbeta till sjöss. Undersökningen genomfördes med en kvalitativ forskningsansats där datainsamlingen skedde genom två fokusgruppsintervjuer och tio individuella intervjuer. Totalt har 18 sjöingenjörsstudenter från Sveriges sjöfartshögskolor ingått i undersökningen. Intervjuerna analyserades och tolkades genom hermeneutisk och semantisk metod, som presenterades i ett tematiskt resultat. De mest framträdande resultaten av undersökningen är att även om studenterna fick en förtrogenhetsutbildning, gavs den inte alltid innan de sattes i arbete. Majoriteten av studenterna arbetade betydligt fler timmar än vad som överenskommits i det så kallade elevavtalet. Studenterna upplever även att det förekommer ett bristande ledarskap hos vissa av handledarna, där några av studenterna har utsatts för kränkande särbehandling och dåligt beteende. Trots brister inom onboardingen och den organisatoriska och social arbetsmiljön, var det inga övergripande orsaker till att studenterna inte ville fortsätta arbeta till sjöss. Det var dock en minoritet som inte ville fortsätta att arbeta till sjöss. För dessa var orsaken bristande ledarskap och jargongen ombord. / The purpose of the work presented in this student thesis was to identify how marine engineer students have experienced the organisational and social work environment onboard during their internships, and if their experiences have affected their future career choices. A qualitative research approach was adopted. Data collection was performed through two semi-structured focus group interviews and ten semi-structured individual in-depth interviews. The data analysis was interpreted hermeneutic and semantic, and the result was presented thematic. The participating students shared many experiences. Most of the students were given the mandatory familiarization training onboard, but in many cases this was not completed until after the students first work task onboard the ship. Almost all the students worked more hours than stipulated in the student agreement. Some of the students experienced bad behaviour and were treated badly by their supervisor. Even though students experienced shortcomings in the organisational and social work environment, most of the students were still willing to pursue a career at sea. A small part of the students did not want to work at sea due to their experiences of poor social work environment and lack of leadership onboard. / Drivkrafter för kompetensförsörjning i en socialt hållbar sjöfart

The diploma thesis focuses on the issue of work-life harmonization in a selected company engaged in water sports. It specifies the topicality of its implementation to business practice, tools of work-life balance, possibilities and barriers from the perspective of employers and employees. The practical part analyses the current state of the selected company through a questionnaire survey and a semi-structured interview. On the basis of the theoretical knowledge and the obtained results, optimal measures for work-life balance are proposed, which are supplemented by a financial evaluation.

"Gränserna suddas ut" : Faktorer som påverkar chefers balans mellan arbetsliv och privatliv

Work-life balance, balans mellan arbetsliv och privatliv, har intresserat forskare under de senaste decennierna och flertalet studier har gjorts på ämnet. Olika perspektiv har tagits i beaktning, såväl individinriktade som organisatoriska. Denna studie belyser de mönster och faktorer som kan urskiljas och påverkar chefers work-life balance. Studien bygger på 14 kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer med chefer inom olika branscher. Intervjuerna behandlade chefernas upplevelser av balans mellan arbetsliv och privatliv och en tematisk analys genomfördes på det insamlade materialet. Resultatet visar att chefer i relativt hög grad upplever balans mellan arbetsliv och privatliv men balansen tycks gå i vågor av perioder av stress och hög arbetsbelastning. Studien finner inga tydliga könsskillnader angående chefernas sätt att skapa balans. Däremot lyfter intervjupersonerna problematiken kring kvinnors dubbla arbete, i förvärvsarbete och hem. Slutligen kan det konstateras att arbetsuppgifternas karaktär, det flexibla arbetet och förmågan att sätta gränser mellan de olika livsdomänerna, konflikter mellan olika sociala roller, såväl som det sociala stödet och kraven som cheferna upplever är de faktorer som påverkar balansen mellan arbetsliv och privatliv i högst grad. / Work-life balance, the balance between work and private life, has been interesting researchers over the last decades, and several studies has been conducted in the field. Different perspectives have been considered, both individual and organizational. This study highlights the patterns and factors that affect managers' work-life balance. The study is based on 14 qualitative semi-structured interviews with managers in different industries. The interviews covered the managers’ experiences of work-life balance and a thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results show that managers experience a relatively high level of work-life balance, but the balance seems to fluctuate in periods of stress and high workload. The study finds no clear gender differences regarding the managers’ way of creating balance. Although the respondents raise their attention to the issue regarding women’s double workload, both at work and at home. Finally, it can be noted that the nature of the tasks, the flexible working hours, the ability to set limits between the life domains, the conflict between different roles, as well as social support, and the demands the managers face are the factors that influence the balance between work and private life the most.
