Developing a contextual approach to ecological mission : a case for the Christian youth ministry at Melodi ya Tshwane

Sebego, Tebogo Zakia 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of Melodi Ya Tshwane Christian Youth Ministry (MyT CYM) in the context of what is increasingly observable environmental crisis with a view of developing a contextual approach to ecological mission. The research does not focus primarily on the environmental crisis itself except to note that its scope incorporates not only environmental issues, but has some important implications for social justice as well. The research recognises the role that MyT CYM must play as part of their contribution towards addressing the environmental crisis. Such a role is based not on a pragmatic response to the situation, but flows from the missional nature and theology of the church. Therefore, the missional church has an obligation to address this issue, through Christian mission that takes seriously the biblical call to care and preserve the integrity of creation. Finally, this research aims to assist MyT CYM to understand the theological basis for contextual action towards developing an appropriate ecological mission. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Boktrailern : varför marknadsföra text med ljud och bild?

Stanke, Maria Helena January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the book trailer as a phenomenon and method of marketing. Similarities between the book trailer, the book cover and the movie trailer are examined to show how a "typical" book trailer looks and what functions it possibly has. The paper also explores the book trailer’s prospects of reaching different audiences in different age groups. It also points to difficulties in defining an audience. Young adult literature and the fantasy genre are linked to the book trailer and examples are given on how authors and publishers can establish relationships with readers through the Internet. General guidelines are given for what should be considered to appeal to as many potential readers as possible when a book trailer is being used or designed. The book trailer's ability to reach young, reluctant readers, who have given up on reading to the benefit of image based storytelling like movies and computer games, are explored. The conclusion highlights the advantages of promoting books with audio and video.

Tourism and marine resource conservation tentacle in tentacle? Zanzibari hotels as biosphere stewards in support of octopus closures

Bohlin, Michael January 2020 (has links)
Tourism fuels the Zanzibari economy but adds to the depletion of marine resources. However, the concept of corporate biosphere stewardship suggests that companies with consolidated power can influence sustainability pathways. Can tourist hotels practically support octopus closures, a novel conservation tool, as a way towards sustainable marine resource consumption? I address this issue by making the first known attempt to estimate Zanzibari hotels’ seasonal and annual octopus demand, mapping their value chain structure and identifying the nature of their demand. The study relies on semi-structured interviews of 31 respondents (hotel staff, hotel suppliers, market traders, food importers and key informants) and official data. I assess the demand of hotels to range between 16 to 27 percent of the mean 2008-2018 annual catch in Zanzibar. Hence, this consumer power hotels may confer agency for them to contribute to resource conservation such as octopus closures. Hotels may support closures particularly if they match seasonality in octopus price and demand. However, hoteliers’ use of a wide sourcing network including imports may lead to diluted price signals hampering understanding and incentives to protect the local octopus supply. Additionally, hoteliers’ weight preferences largely correspond with the Zanzibari voluntary minimum weight limit, but do not align with the desired outcome of bigger octopus from closures. The typical practise of purchasing fresh octopus and limited freezer capacity of hotels may also limit their agency to support octopus closures. This study makes a novel contribution of linking octopus conservation with tourism. It furthermore nuances the concept of corporate biosphere stewardship by assessing the practical potential of Zanzibari tourism, a less consolidated industry, to contribute to marine resource conservation.  Further research into local biosphere stewardship of value chains within low-income country contexts should investigate differences in use of consumer power by small as opposed to large-scale businesses. In addition, similar assessments could benefit from research into local spatial and relational value chains, and their influence on hoteliers’ capacity to perceive of supply status through price signals, not only for octopus but seafood in general.

Exploring small and medium enterprises' corporate social responsibility practice in Ethiopia's Tigrai Regional State: a supportive conceptual framework

Kahsu Mebrahtu Areaya 05 1900 (has links)
Abstract in English, Southern Sotho and Xhosa / Global poverty remains one of the significant challenges of human beings in the twenty-first century, despite the United Nation’s declaration that all people have the right to education, work, health, well-being; a healthier environment and equal opportunities. The active role of business organisations is vital and necessary to tackle this challenge. One of the mechanisms that can ensure the participation of business organisations in tackling the challenges of human beings is corporate social responsibility (CSR). Accordingly, the primary purpose of the study was to explore CSR initiatives in Ethiopia, focusing on the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) of the Tigrai Regional State. More specifically, the study aimed at assessing the perceptions SME owners and managers’ perceptions of CSR regarding their economic, legal, ethical, environmental and philanthropic responsibilities. The aim was also to investigate their CSR initiatives and to analyse the driving forces of and barriers to CSR interventions. An exploratory survey research design and a mixed method approach were followed to achieve these objectives. A probability sampling technique was applied to select the 400 sample respondents. A convenient sampling technique was applied to select 15 participants for interviews. Questionnaires, key-informant interviews and secondary documents were used as a means of data collection. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, means, and standard deviations were applied to analyse the quantitative data. The qualitative data was analysed using content analysis where items were transcribed, and emergent themes were identified. The findings of this study are that the SMEs surveyed have an appreciable level of CSR initiatives. They have care and concern towards their employees; the local community and the environment. Furthermore, the SMEs relatively protect the health and safety of their employees, protect against substance abuse and harassment of employees in the workplace; strive to provide professional training to their employees, and arrange orientation programmes, to mention but a few. SMEs have energy and water measurement systems and carry out philanthropic activities that can protect the well-being of the environment, but they are weak in recycling and energy conservation and in creating environmentally friendly new products. At community level, SMEs assist sports activities, road construction, religious organisations and local government. Furthermore, they create gainful employment opportunities. However, they give minimal attention to helping the disabled, war veterans, women, education, and similar areas. The quest for image building, keeping the well-being of the environment, ethical reasons and improving customer relations and loyalty were among the prime factors that motivated SMEs to participate in CSR initiatives. However, the concerted efforts of the enterprises’ participation in CSR activities were constrained by factors such as shortage of finance, lack of skilled and educated workforce who can implement the CSR initiatives and lack of training and information about CSR. To alleviate these constraints, thereby making SMEs the major actors in CSR initiatives, interventions by government and other stakeholders such as NGOs is essential. Furthermore, SMEs should follow a culture-oriented, ethics primary, motivated and collaborative approach rather than profit-oriented CSR. / Ubuhlwempu ehlabathini busengomnye umngeni onzima eluntwini kule nkulungwane yamashumi amabini ananye, nangona iZizwe Ezimanyeneyo zibethelela ukuba bonke abantu banelungelo lokufumana imfundo, umsebenzi, impilo, intlalontle, okusingqongileyo okunempilo namathuba alinganayo. Ukunxanelwa ukwakha igama elihle, ukugcina indalo engqongileyo, ukuphucula intsebenziswano nokuthembeka kwabaxumi yaba zezinye izinto ezikhuthaza ukuba iiSME zithathe inxaxheba kumalinge eCSR. Noxa kunjalo, imizamo ezinikeleyo yenkampani kwimisebenzi yeCSR yayithityazwa zizinto ezifana nokunqaba kwemali, ukungabikho koqeqesho nolwazi ngeCSR, ukunqongophala kwabasebenzi abafundileyo nabanezakhono ababenokwazi ukuqhuba imisebenzi yeCSR. An investigation of alternative growth media to replace peat for the cultivation of potted Dendranthema x grandiflorum

Koopa, Katlego Gustaff 12 1900 (has links)
Peat extraction for horticultural production poses a threat to wetland ecosystems. The rapid growth rate of the horticulture industry has prompted an ongoing search for sustainable alternative growth media components to replace peat. The alternative components need to provide properties (physical and chemical) similar to or better than peat and provide conditions that will enhance ideal growth and yield of potted plants. Potted Dendranthema x grandiflorum is one of the most important pot plants cultivated worldwide in the floriculture industry. There is a global research effort to replace peat with a sustainable alternative growth media for potted plants; however, so far, no study has been conducted in South Africa that used similar treatments on potted Dendranthema x grandiflorum. The aim of this study was to determine a suitable alternative growth media to replace peat as a growth media for cultivation of potted D. x grandiflorum. A greenhouse experiment was conducted at the University of South Africa’s Horticulture centre in Florida, Johannesburg for 89 days. Eight growth media (100 % peat (T1) (control), 100 % bagasse (T2), 50:50 % v/v bagasse:peat (T3), 75:25 % v/v bagasse:peat (T4), 25:75 % v/v bagasse:peat (T5), composted bagasse (T6), Coir (T7), and pine bark (T8)) as treatments and one hybrid (Mount® Runca) of D. x grandiflorum were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. In this study, nutrient uptake, chlorophyll content, growth, and yield parameters were measured for potted D. x grandiflorum grown in all eight growth media. The results show that treatments had different chemical and physical properties compared to peat. The pH of 100 % bagasse and coir were within the ideal range recommended for growth media. The EC results indicated that after the experiment, other treatments were within the defined range except for composted bagasse due to high concentration of soluble salts. The BD of control and composted bagasse were similar and may have resulted in the low root response. The concentration of total N was high in the shoots of plants cultivated in 100 % peat with a subsequent increased fresh and dry shoots weight. The highest significant chlorophyll content was present in plants cultivated in composted bagasse, which contained high total N and, Fe and Zn concentrations in shoots. Taken together, the results showed that composted bagasse was the best alternative to replace peat for cultivation of potted D. x grandiflorum. / Turfonttrekking vir tuinboukundige produksie hou ʼn bedreiging vir moerasland-ekostelsels in. Text in English with abstracts and keywords in English, Tswana and Afrikaans / Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top-ranking causes of death in many countries, including Namibia. The purpose of this research study was to determine the knowledge and the attitudes of religious leaders and congregants regarding TB and to describe practices of TB prevention among religious leaders and congregants in Khomas Region, Namibia. The researcher developed strategies for enhancing the prevention of TB by religious leaders in Khomas Region, Namibia. The Health Belief Model and the Socio-ecological Model were adopted for the study. A mixed-method convergent design was used in this study. Phase one of the study involved the use of a quantitative descriptive design and phase two comprised a sequential mixed-method study using the Delphi technique. Explorative, descriptive and contextual designs were applied in phase two. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires in both phase one and phase two. Phase one included 299 participants and phase two included 100 experts in TB and religion. A quantitative data analysis was done using Moon Stats 2018, version 2.0. A qualitative data analysis was done following the steps of content analysis. This study found that the participants were very knowledgeable about TB in that 241 (80.87%) participants indicated that bacteria are the cause of TB and 292 (97.99%) indicated that TB bacteria are spread through the air from one person to another. The participants had a good attitude towards TB in that 227 (76.65%) participants agreed that anyone can be infected with TB and 140 (47.78%) expressed compassion for people who have TB. Participants of the study had good practices for TB prevention, like seeking medical attention if they suspect they have TB. A total of 28 strategies for the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of TB were developed. The recommendation made in this study is that religious leaders should be at the forefront of TB prevention activities due to their sphere of influence in society. All health sector stakeholders should support efforts by religious leaders to combat TB through sponsorships. / Bolwetsi jwa lehuba (TB) ke nngwe ya dibaki tsa loso tse di kwa setlhoeng mo dinageng tse dintsi, go akaretsa Namibia. A talent management model for medium sized enterprises in Uganda

Ndawula, Gerald January 2018 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in Zulu and SePedi / Business-oriented studies have revealed that medium-sized enterprises greatly contribute to economic growth and socio-economic development of developed and emerging economies like Uganda. At the same time, these enterprises are faced with copious challenges, and chief among them, is a general lack of prudent talent management model(s) and talented people to propel them forward in order to sustain competitiveness. The aim of the present research undertaking was to develop a model for talent management that could be applied by medium-sized enterprises in Uganda to attract and retain talented people with the view to sustain survival, growth, development and competitiveness. The study evolved on the thesis statement that the characteristics of an enterprise (i.e., main business, number of employees, years of existence, technological advancement, ownership arrangement, location and active website) and managerial characteristics (i.e., level of competition, performance rating of the enterprise, leadership style, owners participation, academic attainment of the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer and academic attainment of Assistant General Manager/Assistant Chief Executive Officer) influence the direction and dynamics of talent management (i.e., talent identification, leadership talent development, talent development for hard to fill positions, higher position talent development, cohort of talent, talent utilization and reward management) in the medium-sized enterprises in Uganda. A mixed research design was adopted. Primary data was obtained through a survey questionnaire and interviews of management experts were conducted, using the theoretical sampling technique. The interviews were meant to obtain the underlying in-depth factors pertaining to emerging issues from the quantitative data analysis. Based on the Business Register for the year 2006, the total population of the medium-sized enterprises in Uganda stood at 58,512 and the targeted sample of 600 medium sized enterprises was statistically arrived at. 570 medium-sized enterprises responded positively to the study. This gave a response rate of 95%, which was classified as excellent. The measuring instrument yielded an overall Cronbach Alpha value of 0.77 which implied that the instrument was reliable to conduct the study. A variable was generated to measure talent management. This was done by the application of STATA Version 13.0. Linear regression analysis was conducted for all the seven research questions for the study. The model fit was good because the probability value (0.000) was less than 0.05 and the conclusions were made at 95 per cent level of confidence. Using the adjusted model, it was established that main business, technological advancement, ownership structure and location of enterprises significantly influence talent management in the medium-sized enterprises in Uganda. In addition, it was revealed that performance rating, leadership style, owners participation and academic attainment of the assistant general managers significantly influence the dynamics and direction of talent management in the medium-sized enterprises in Uganda. These findings formed the developed talent management model for medium-sized enterprises. The fundamental theoretical contribution of this investigation was the development of a talent management model for medium-sized enterprises in Uganda, in the context of developing countries. The practical worth of the model is its application to strengthen talent management in the medium-sized enterprises with the view to sustain survival, growth, development and competitiveness. The recommendations of the study are that: the dependency of medium sized enterprises in Uganda on general management aspects without embracing fundamental ingredients of talent management is a risky business venture; and medium-sized enterprises in Uganda must revisit their talent identification, talent development initiatives, talent retention programs, talent utilization and reward management systems. This will permit them to be aligned with the volatile competitive business environment. Medium-sized enterprises must continuously re-examine leadership talent development initiatives in order to enhance business leaders with the view to attain long term sustainability. / Izingcwaningo eziphathelene nebhizinisi sezikuvezile ukuthi amabhizinisi amaphakathi ngobukhulu anegalelo elikhulukazi ekukhulisweni komnotho kanye nokuthuthukiswa kwenhlalomnotho yamazwe aneminotho esithuthukile kanye nalawo aneminotho esafufusa njenge-Uganda.

Larsson, Line January 2022 (has links)
In this paper, I study the silence in Bart Moeyaert’s two novels Kärleken vi inte förstår (eng. It’s Love We Don’t Understand, 1999) and Alla är ledsna nuförtiden (eng. Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays, 2018) with the help of Maria Nikolajeva’s theories of narrative perspective. I examine the narrative perspective in relation to the other characters’ appearances – focusing on the narrator’s priorities and voice – as well as how the silence is portrayed. Furthermore, by using a method of close-to-text reading I seek answers to the following questions: how is silence portrayed in Kärleken vi inte förstår and Alla är ledsna nuförtiden? What is the role of silence in the previous novels? The last question refers to in what way Moeyaert uses the silence in his novels. Finally, I concluded that the silence in Kärleken vi inte förstår is ambiguous. On the one hand, it is used by the characters as a tool of communication, and on the other hand, it works as a storytelling technique to withhold information from the reader as well as amplify the atmosphere or mood. Moreover, the silence in Alla är ledsna nuförtiden rather has the function of a theme or a motif as it forces the story to move forward.
