Archetype and allegory in "Journey to the West"

Zhang, Kai 04 November 2009 (has links)
The Journey to the West (西游记) is one of the masterworks of classic Chinese fiction. It was written by Wu Cheng‘en (吴承恩) in the 16th century CE. Many of the scholars, both Chinese and Western, who have studied the narrative of this Ming era (1368-1644) novel, have considered it to be an epic of myth and fantasy, heavily laden with allegorical meaning. Most scholars have chosen to interpret the novel by means of an encompassing framework of meaning rooted in the convergence of the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. I propose to look at the Journey’s narrative structure as a heroic adventure or monomyth of the kind proposed by Joseph Campbell, following the insights of Carl Jung on the nature of the collective unconscious. To analyze the component parts of the quest story that forms the bulk of the novel‘s narrative, I shall turn to Vladimir Propp‘s categorization of the functioning of elements of plot and character in his morphology of folktales. I shall also argue that the Journey is not an allegory that serves the beliefs and practices of a number of religions and philosophies, but a specifically Buddhist allegory. The Journey is seen as intentionally composed of symbols, images, and codes that function to project a heroic adventure with a complex pattern of meaning, primarily representing the eternal human struggle for identity and a fully realized existence, that are Buddhist in nature.

In Heaven, as it is on Earth: Representations of literary heavens in contemporary literature, with a focus on Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones

Tidy, Samantha Ellen, samtidy@iprimus.com.au January 2009 (has links)
This exegesis examines the landscape of heaven depicted in the contemporary novel, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I examine the various characteristics of the heaven (or 'afterlife') depicted in Sebold's novel, with the aim of ascertaining the narrative effects of using this device. Using Ingrid Daemmrich's analysis of the paradisiacal motif in literature as a framework (Daemmrich, I 1997, Studies on Themes and Motifs in Literature: Enigmatic Bliss, The Paradise Motif in Literature, Peter Lang, New York), I reveal characteristics in The Lovely Bones that are both consistent with and challenge traditional literary representations of heaven and which therefore demonstrate that the text utilises the established literary motif of heaven for symbolism and meaning, but in a contemporary context. I explore the growing trend of contemporary literary heavens by reviewing two other literary heavens that are relevant to this scholarship. I examine where as writers and readers, we ascertain our concept of heaven (in society's religious foundations and from prior literature), and for the relevance of the key text, I briefly discuss the author's likely cultural influences. Having established the novel's lack of alignment with a religious version of heaven, I then examine the nature of and the narrative effect of, the personalised heaven depicted in the novel, The Lovely Bones. In doing so, I explore one of the new portraits of heaven in literature, an example which represents a growing trend away from portraying a classic edenic heaven shared by all humanity (and traditional to literary representations of heaven), toward a contemporary, personalised heaven that seeks to meet the wants and desires of the individual in our modern society. With reference to literature's ability to reflect back to us, our society's beliefs and values, I examine what this new portrait of heaven reveals about society. Access to the project examined in conjunction with this exegesis has been restricted due to copyright.

This dissertation is a study about the trajectory of Maria Elenita de Vasconcelos (1944-1984), teacher and social scientist, born in Pedra Lavrada-PB. The guiding axis of this writing will be to discuss their memories built, from their relatives, friends and residents of the city. In the first moment, we will present a discussion about the friendships that she had in the city and we noticed that the affective relations were a mark of prominence in her life, mainly in the memories of actions that demonstrated to be a woman that tried to live with its friends a relation of affection and companionship. In the second moment we problematized the memory of Elenita as mother and wife and we realized the importance of Ido had in the construction of this one and for having been one of the main people who tried to preserve the paper of her as wife and mother. In the third and final chapter, we will look at recent events in Elenita's life, mainly from the discovery of the third pregnancy and the diagnosis of cancer. We also seek to reflect upon her wishes after death and we understand from the reading of the sources that the teacher made of her last events on earth, a final spectacle appropriating her affective symbolic power consciously or not so that her wishes were fulfilled . As sources, we used photographs of the educator and some places that were part of her story, interviews with relatives and friends, a postcard written by her own a few months before her death and a letter testament addressed to Lavradenses, some relatives and friends. In order to base our discussions, the contributions of Foucault (1981) were used through his studies on the aesthetics of existence, as a relationship that leads the subject to the transformation of self, from the relation and existence of the other. The works of Pinsky (2014), Louro (1997) and Perrot (2017) on the ideals built around women in the "Golden Years", period of which this work is inserted, were also fundamental to us, as Halbwachs (2006) and Delgado (2010), through which we discuss memory and its relation to history. In order to understand the relationship between historical research and biography, we analyzed the work of Dosse (2009) that discusses the tension between this genre and the modern approach that has as a parameter relativism and historiographical readings, enriched by the contributions of other areas of knowledge such as psychoanalysis and sociology.

This research aims to know through the narrative of two educators its universe of training and teaching practice where they deslindam multiple questions about the versatile teacher divided between professional, work and idealization in their daily lives with the children and the community. The search is the articulation of formal knowledge, informal, non-formal, historical so that these studies can contribute to social and historical theory of the individual and, by extension of social groups. The object are the narratives of life story / experience / confrontation with knowledge / knowledge transformed into teaching practice during childhood / elementary school during the passage of the twentieth century to the twenty-first in Fortaleza / CearÃ. We used the life story as a research methodology, but also the bibliographical and documentary analysis, where we highlight the National Association for Training of Education Professionals (ANFOPE). The theoretical background is discussed by NÃvoa with aspects of teacher education in the contemporary world and the concept of "narrative itself" represented by Passegi (UFRN) and Souza (UNEB). The meaning of the paradox of maintaining between idealization and his real condition of life is perceived through the speech of the teachers themselves by telling their life stories in an intimate dialogue between training and practice irrigated by their identities.

Eriksson, Sandra, Åström, Elias January 2018 (has links)

Reader Address and its Translation in a Gardening Guide : Pronouns, Modals and Imperatives

Nilsson, Micaela January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the translation of three forms of reader address from English to Swedish in a gardening guidebook – the pronoun you as a second person reference and generic reference, modal verbs, and imperatives. The translation was made by the author of this study. The aim of the study is to investigate how the three forms of reader address is translated. The quantitative analysis shows that the most used form of reader address out of the three investigated are imperatives, while the pronoun you followed closely behind. While modal verbs were used frequently in the ST, the modality was not translated in the TT. The qualitative analysis shows that the pronoun you was translated into second person du, third person generic man or was omitted in the translation in almost equal measure. How the pronoun you was translated in the TT depended on how the translator interpreted the author’s target audience. Only two modal verbs occurred frequently in the ST, and in the TT they were either translated as modal verbs or into present tense. Lastly, the imperative verbs were most commonly translated as imperatives in the TT. About 10% were translated into tensed verbs. Furthermore, half of that was translated to form suggestions.

Reclaiming feminism in the Shakespearean films of Julia Stiles

Creel, Sara Ann 03 May 2019 (has links)
Teen Shakespeare films have largely been dismissed as films which “dumb down” Shakespeare’s original texts and which are marketed in a manipulative way in order to sell teens fantasies that appeal to them. Among the most popular and recognizable actresses of this genre is Julia Stiles, known for her leading roles in 10 Things I Hate About You, O, and Hamlet. Several scholars have critiqued Stiles’s films for the ways that they depict feminism and American teen girlhood. In this thesis, I argue that Stiles’s films present a spectrum of, an admittedly limited, feminism that becomes increasingly more progressive. By exploring Stiles’s portrayal of feminism in these films, the hope is to move away from the idea of teen Shakespeare films as merely dumbed down versions of the plays and to, instead, move towards an understanding of the political and social role of this generic category.

Att fokusera på förövaren

Liljegren, Sandra January 2017 (has links)
Syftet är att undersöka hur manlighet konstrueras i kampanjen ”Where Do You Stand?” i förhållande till hegemonisk maskulinitet.

Automated Detection of Arctic Foxes in Camera Trap Images

Zahid, Mian Muhammad Usman January 2024 (has links)
This study explores the application of object detection models for detecting Arctic Foxes in camera trap images, a crucial step towards automating wildlife monitoring and enhancing conservation efforts. The study involved training models on You Only Look Once version 7(YOLOv7) architecture across different locations using k-fold cross-validation technique and evaluating their performance in terms of mean Average Precision (mAP), precision, and recall. The models were tested on both validation and unseen data to assess their accuracy and generalizability. The findings revealed that while certain models performed well on validation data, their effectiveness varied when applied to unseen data, with significant differences in performance across the datasets. While one of the datasets demonstrated the highest precision (88%), and recall (94%) on validation data, another one showed superior generalizability on unseen data (precision 76%, recall 95%). The models developed in this study can aid in the efficient identification of Arctic Foxes in diverse locations. However, the study also identifies limitations related to dataset diversity and environmental variability, suggesting the need for future research to focus on training models during different seasons and having different aged Arctic Foxes. Recommendations include expanding dataset diversity, exploring advanced object detection architectures to go one step further and detect Arctic Foxes with skin diseases, and testing the models in varied field conditions.
