Amiable Humor and Dual Address in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Molander, Christoffer January 2017 (has links)
The humor of Mark Twain has long fascinated his readers. Critics such as Messent (2007), Budd (2005), Gerber (1988) and Camfield (2005) have all analyzed Mark Twain’s humor to reveal nuances and to help further the understanding of what makes Twain’s writing humorous. However, there is a distinct gap in the research so far conducted investigating Twain’s humor in relation to young readers, which this paper will begin to address. Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (2007) poses a relevant subject for this research as Twain explicitly (in the preface to the novel) professes to write both for children and adults simultaneously. Writing in such a way can be categorized as either “double address” or “dual address”, understanding these terms according to the definitions of Barbara Wall (1991). In this paper I will argue that Mark Twain manages to create “dual address” in Tom Sawyer by using what Greg Camfield (2005) calls “amiable humor” and constructing scenes out of childhood in order to produce delight and nostalgia. By reading closely excerpts of the book and analyzing Twain’s specific use of humor through three prominent theories—superiority theory, relief theory and incongruity— it becomes possible to identify what the implied reader is meant to find humorous, and therefore if Twain manages to establish a “dual address”. An understanding of Twain’s humor from the perspective of both young and adult reader furthers our understanding of the novel by revealing Twain’s implementation of complex “dual address” narration and its implications.

Accélération des accès mémoire dans la traduction binaire dynamique / Acceleration of memory accesses in dynamic binary translation

Faravelon, Antoine 22 October 2018 (has links)
In this thesis we are interested in the acceleration of memory accesses in dynamic binary translation. For this, we base ourselves on methods whose main purpose is to manage the target's address space with the host's hardware. Two main methods for this have been explored, one based on hardware assisted virtualization, and the other on a Linux module. In the case of hardware assisted virtualization, we used the simulator as a specific guest. This one playing a role similar to that of an OS, in addition to its role of simulator, for the target. In particular, it is responsible for creating an enmbedded address space that can be used directly, without software simulation of an MMU.In the case of a method based on a Linux module, the same purpose is pursued. But the simulator continues to operate as a normal process. On the other hand, it now has a companion module, with which it can communicate through ioctl. This module is responsible for manipulating the host's virtual memory management to create an embedded address space for the target. These methods have been implemented in Qemu and Linux and lead to significant performance gains.

[en] THE PRONOUNS / FORMS OF ADDRESS IN PORTUGUESE AND BRAZILIAN CULTURE: SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND SECOND CULTURE ACQUISITION / [pt] OS PRONOMES / FORMAS DE TRATAMENTO NO PORTUGUÊS E A CULTURA BRASILEIRA: AQUISIÇÃO DE SEGUNDA LÍNGUA E AQUISIÇÃO DE SEGUNDA CULTURA

JANE CRISTINA DUARTE DOS SANTOS 22 September 2008 (has links)
[en] This work investigates the acquisition of the pronouns tu and você and other forms of address in Portuguese as a second language, and the acquisition of Brazilians culture as a second culture. It was aimed to identify and characterize general factors (affective and social ones) involved in the acquisition process, to characterize the learning strategies used, to verify the way general factors influence the learning strategies used and to analyse the ways those factors influence on the second culture acquisition. Important masterpieces were used - some that use the socio-educational model of acquisition of a second language, among others that approach the concept of second culture acquisition. With the data provided by this research, it was verified that: (i) a significant part of foreign students who came to Brazil to study presents an integrative motivation; (ii) one of the learning strategies used for foreign students is the interaction with Brazilians; (iii) the positive attitude toward the interaction with Brazilians and the exposition to Brazilian culture helps the language and culture acquisition. On the other hand, the attitude was the major point of this research, just getting a little bit far from the theory used. Even this way, it was possible to notice that the success on Portuguese language acquisition comes together with Brazilian culture acquisition. The research and the results found can help teachers and researches on the elaboration of new pedagogical material and on the improvement of new methodologies for teaching PL2-E.

Fragments d'une déposition / Fragments of a deposition

Chesnier, Claire 24 March 2018 (has links)
This writing goes through the ink of painting through its own. It has this body to share, both fraternal and irreconcilable. Here the ink of writing sought to pave a liquid way in painting, giving to its movement the trembling of color, which is a gesture of matter itself. As for my gesture, drunk by the paper and withdrawn in folds of waves, operates a drift to the white of a page on the table, that unfolds to this singular object that is the thesis in fine arts. In fact, as painting accompanies in its shadowy wake the questioning of a gaze, its course without outline, writing from painting, turns on its own object - from one ink to another. The construction of a discourse in touch with the wandering of the studio is delicate. It merges its body resonant with images with that of words from poets, working an unknown language in the very core of the impasse that constitutes words, access to speech. The painter's voice is the only one I know. It is the result of the abandonment and divestment at work. It engages thought in making, in the midst of a deposition which is, multiple, that of a body of ink, of a radiant painting, of a gesture and its removal, of a voice and its fragments. Deposition calls for the ground. It is that very ground that is being discussed throughout this writing. A grounding, as foundation but also as what melts under the steps. Liquid, fluid, moving. A release that is also an anchor, a tie that is also an overflow.

A Preliminary Exploration of Memory Controller Policies on Smartphone Workloads

Narancic, Goran 26 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores memory performance for smartphone workloads. We design a Video Conference Workload (VCW) to model typical smartphone usage. We describe a trace-based methodology which uses a software implementation to mimic the behaviour of specialised hardware accelerators. Our methodology stores dataflow information from the original application to maintain the relationships between requests. We first study seven address mapping schemes with our VCW, using a first-ready, first-come-first-served (FR-FCFS) memory scheduler. Our results show the best performing scheme is up to 82% faster than the worst. The VCW is memory intensive, with up to 86.8% bandwidth utilisation using the best performing scheme. We also test a Web Browsing and a set of computer vision workloads. Most are not memory intensive, with utilisation under 15%. Finally, we compare four schedulers and find that the FR-FCFS scheduler using the Write Drain mode [8] performed the best, outperforming the worst scheduler by 6.3%.

Enhanced Hole Punching For Rssi Location Tracking In Hospitals

Pecel, Deniz 01 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
With the enhancement of the Radio signal communication systems, Wi-Fi technology become a &ldquo / de facto&rdquo / standard used in Campus areas such as hospitals and universities. Besides being used as a data communication method, Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is also used as a location tracking method. There are lots of studies enhancing the RSSI based location tracking. In this thesis we tried to generate a test environment as close to a real Wi-Fi network scenario as possible. Our aim is to implement a simple moving client among different wireless local area networks, which is tracked across the internet by a stationary client. We also assumed that there is a Network Address Translation (NAT) at both LAN internet edges.
