A Comparative Analysis of College Academic Achievement between Graduates of Public and Private High Schools: a Study of the Freshman GPA

Blackstone, Warren J. (Warren Jay) 08 1900 (has links)
This study reviewed the literature on the struggle for equal educational opportunity of the 1960s and 1970s, the reform movement of the 1990s, the public/private school debate of the 1980s and 1990s, the issue of school choice in the 1990s, and a brief history of private schools. The literature revealed that since the Supreme court's ruling, in 1954, on the unconstitutionality of separate-but-equal public schools and decisions on the separation of church and state, during the 1960s and 1970s, the number of and enrollment in private and parochial schools have grown steadily. This study was conducted on a sample of 14,242 students attending 17 colleges (15 private colleges and 2 public universities) to determine if there was a difference in their academic performance (GPA) at the end of their freshman year. The independent variables of the study were the size of the student's secondary school graduating class, the religious affiliation of the secondary school, the gender enrollment pattern of the secondary school, and the residential pattern of the secondary school. In addition, using the student's SAT score, an analysis was conducted to determine whether or not the student's first-year college GPA exceeded their GPA predicted by the SAT.

Nyborg, Claes, Jonsson, Amanda January 2009 (has links)

Alumni Monitoring and Supporting Model: A holistic view of quality management in higher education / Modelo para el Seguimiento y Acompañamiento a Graduados (SAG), una visión holística de la gestión de la calidad de la educación superior / Modelo de Monitoramento e Apoio aos Alumni (SAG), uma visão holística da gestão da qualidade na educação superior

Garzón Castrillón, Ana 18 May 2018 (has links)
The universities have among their responsibilities, providing high quality education that benefits students, alumni, organizations and society in general.Alumni monitoring becomes an important source for curriculum feedback, assessing the quality of the training and their consistency with the requirements for professional performance in different companies. However, there are many difficulties in establishing and maintaining a relationship of mutual benefits between educational institutions and their alumni. In this article, a Model for Alumni Monitoring and Supporting is presented. The model was designed from a holistic, ensuring that all involved actors get benefits. The model has been validated and can be adopted and/or adapted by educational institutions to create or strengthen the relationship with their alumni.

Cultivating a giving-back culture: an investigation into the motivations of millennial donors

Hart, Sarah B. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Journalism and Mass Communications / Todd F. Simon / Cultivating relationships with millennial donors -- individuals born between 1982 through 1995 -- has become a topic of interest for researchers, organizations and fundraisers. Kansas State University had begun creating a “giving-back culture” among current students through a student-led campaign, in the hope of augmenting alumni donations to the university in the future. This study explored current students’ motives to give back to their university, determined the factors influencing their decision-making process, and discerned the effects of a student-giving campaign on postgraduates’ giving behavior. Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations model helped explain the influence of communication channels and opinion leaders on the decision-making process of millennial donors, both alumni and current students. This study found that millennials are motivated to donate based on several campaign factors, such as the mission, how the money is be used, the receiving of a gift for their donation, and pride in the institution. Friends and close colleagues have a positive influence on millennials’ donation decisions. Millennials also were found to have a preference for the traditional medium of newspaper, along with a high degree of influence for campaign events with face-to-face communication. The lack of apparent effect for students’ self-reported preferences for social media seems to indicate that either diffusion is not at work for this campaign, or that the diffusion process has yet to accelerate for giving back. These findings support previous research on alumni-donor motivations as well as build a foundation for future studies on millennial-donor motivations.

Centralia High School Alumni Association: establishing a research-based communications plan

Waller, Kristin J. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Journalism and Mass Communications / Joye C. Gordon / The goal of this graduate-level report is to establish a research-based communications plan for the Centralia High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) in order to build permanence in relationships between alumni members and the school, as well as, to secure the financial future of the organization. The project will follow a standard public relations RACE (research, action, communication, and evaluation) model. Background research summarizing current trends in the economy, fundraising, donor motivations and solicitation tactics; CHSAA and the environment that surrounds the organization, the school, and businesses in the communities; intervening publics and primary research is analyzed. As a result of the background analysis, four key publics and corresponding strategies and tactics to reach those publics are identified. A campaign budget is proposed; a two-year time period is shown for implementation of created tactics; and finally, evaluation criteria are listed to provide CHSAA with mechanisms for measuring progress toward the end goal of CHSAA being a permanent fixture for Centralia Schools, its alumni members and surrounding communities.

The role of relationship marketing within the Durban University of Technology alumni

Govender, Nishie Pramchund January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology: Public Relations Management, Department of Public Relations, Durban University of Technology. Durban. South Africa, 2015. / The alumni form the largest stakeholder group of any higher education institution (HEI). Representatives from this constituency occupy seats on t he Council (the highest governing body of a higher education institution). Institutions, worldwide, look to their alumni, as a source of funds, to provide expert advice and general support. Therefore, higher education institutions and alumni have to share a mutually beneficial and ongoing relationship. This relationship is maintained through constant and regular communication. Loyal alumni are a mainstay of financial support for many universities. It is important, though, that universities, not only focus on gifts but rather on a br oad and deep engagement with alumni. Alumni relations with their colleges and universities seek to generate interest that eventually translates into financial contributions and volunteer service, which means giving back to their alma mater. To achieve this goal, communication is extremely important. Alumni respond to a call for assistance from their alma mater for many reasons. Some of the reasons include having had good experiences during their undergraduate years as well as their academic qualifications holding them in good stead in the work place. The value that universities place on t heir alumni cannot be underestimated. Many hold influential positions and can assist in contributing to the financial coffers of the university as well as sharing their expertise.
