A critical evaluation of the poetry of S.R. MachakaTladi, Maggie Molatelo 11 1900 (has links)
A wide variety of aspects of Machaka's poetry was treated. His poetry which is
meaningful when viewed against his traditional culture brings inspiration and a formal
mode of literary expression.
Death was never accepted by the Tlokwa as an end to life. Machaka has succeeded in
blending the ancestral worship with Christian faith. He has used euphemism to modify
pain. He makes use of imagery to execute cruelty and bluntness of death.
Machaka's protest poetry echoes the same protest of those of other protesters. These
refer to the injustice the Blacks experienced from the white regime prior to
independence.
From his love poems, it is noticed that Machaka is a great lover. When he is in love, he
becomes a slave.
Machaka uses traditional and modem praise poetry techniques. This made him manage
to produce poetry which made a definite impact on Northern Sotho literature and
contributed to its depth / African Languages / M.A. (African languages)

Previous issue date: 2014-03-12 / This thesis studies the meaning of the religious symbolism in the archetype of the Great Mother to interpret the poetry of Cecilia Meireles (1901-1964). The images of the Great Mother are present in the writings of Cecilia Meireles as well as its religious symbolism. There is a certain affinity between motherhood and religious symbolism in Cecília poetic creation. The main ob-jective of this thesis was to demonstrate the meaning of the archetype of the Great Mother in religious symbolism when the read interpret the poetry of Cecilia Meireles. The bibliographic research was focused on the Eranos group through of Carl Gustav Jung (archetypal), Paul Til-lich (religious symbol), Gaston Bachelard (literary image), Gilbert Durand (myth-critic), Mircea Eliade (symbol). Cecilia Meireles prematurely lost his family and moved in with his grandmother Jacinta Garcia Benavides, born in São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal). Raised in a cozy and loving environment, she constantly listened to the stories told by the grandmother on the Azorean island of São Miguel and India. Moreover, his nanny Pedrina, magically and funny, introduced her in the rich Brazilian folklore and beliefs. Growing up in this environment of loss and suffering, but supported by these two women, the poet built inside her being a mystic deep space encountering her poetry. The Island Nanja is this mystical place where the poet comes when she want to disconnect from the ills of the world. This Nanja Island is a refuge, a cozy lap where she founds herself within an uterus generator of poetry. It is the innermost depths of the mystical and lyrical Cecilian. Cecilia Meireles created her Island Nanja which for her is the island of São Miguel slowly transfigured by her dream. Beyond this symbolism, observed oth-ers, such as: family (mother, grandparent, babysitter when living at home), saints, Our Lady, the land. This thesis concluded that the archetype of the Great Mother is one of the central ele-ments of the poetry of Cecilia Meireles because of her loss in life, especially the figure of the mother. But it s noteworthy that the poet was not stuck to her loss in order to build her poetic fortune. She went far beyond, meeting other generators spaces for her poetry.

Previous issue date: 2011 / This study aims to examine the first three Mato Grosso poet Manoel de Barros´ (1916) works: Poemas concebidos sem pecado (1937), Face Imóvel (1942) e Poesias (1947). The problem that arises concerns treatment of children, identifying the poet´s theme, wich will be seen here through the notion of space. Assuming that the text creates a tension between the rural and urban categories, we intend to see how Barros´ poetry creates, through childhood memories, particular scenarios for both types of space, bringing to the city, most often, a negative feature of discomfort for the self-lyrical, in contrast with the field, you place that reveals how idyllic. The attempts to recover the work habits and children´s portraits of fellow boys from Pantanal, from the metamorphosis of these realities on poetry, and for that, seek support in childhood and notions of space, to the extent that credits the sources of these two elements of Manoel de Barros´ poetic identity.

Claude Simon in theology ? It is a fact. French theologians, more often than not, do not take literary works into account in their own studies. This is especially worrying for contemporary, agnostic and innovatory writers, critical observers of the age in which we live, vho, in the name of complexity, radically call into question our usual categories of analysis. Do Claude Simon’s novels lend themselves to consideration in a theological context ? A priori it is doubtful, but should such an innovatory work, rewarded by a Nobel prize for its strength of interrogation, NOT be subject to close scrutiny ? We accept this risk, being at the same time conscious of the theological difficulties which need to be clarified. In a first part (« the exploratory route ») the reader is introduced to the suject via an inventory of the cultural context and of the artistic experiences lived through by the writer. We embark on this research with three novels which can be considered to mark out his evolutionary journey : Le palace (1962), covering his « baroque period », Les corps conducteurs (1971) for his so-called « formalist period », Le jardin des Plantes for his « postmodern « period. The second part (« towards an ethical and theological development » ) progressively moves the reader towards a hybrid / mongrel novel, grotesquely make-believe, within which can be discerned a satirical, sensitive and mystical but not mysterious dimension. The third part (‘from the meaningless to the dementia of God ») examines the links and limits of the grotesque within the « theodrama » of the Risen-Crucified, set against the unanswered questioning by history’s victims and against the harrowing question of the « dereliction » of man.

Through telluric poetic, written by poets belonging to Sul-Mato-Grossense Letters Academy, we propose to discuss questions on identity and representation. The study has got as temporal cut the decades of 1980,1990 and 2000 and focus only on poetic texts published on the two Academy journals: Suplemento Cutural and a Revista Academia Sul-Mato-Grossense de Letras. The investigative look centers on the texts literary aspects, and the discussion is based on the assumption that the poetic content can reveal, in terms of representation, the sul-matogrossense people cultural identity, having cultural identity as belonging feeling related to a space. To the poetic texts analytical-interpretative reading, we used, basically, the Roman Ingarden's strata-layers' theory.

This dissertation aims to be at first a record of a period of development of the dance in Maceió, showing the work of the dancer and choreographer Telma César. It presents a briefly retrospective of the cultural moment lived in the city and its reflection in promoting artistic creation from the 2000s until this moment. It uses as reference the creative process of the shows directed and produced by her. This dissertation is divided in three chapters, besides the introduction and closing remarks. In the first chapter, I situate the reader in the expanding field of dance history emphasizing the spaces and references in dance in the city at that time. In the second chapter, I describe the artist's ways facing the trajectories in her searches, results from her experiments, discoveries, artistic choices and identification of creation what later match with her choices. The last chapter refers to the identification and development of contemporary thought of dancing in the work produced by the Dance Company “Companhia dos Pes” directed by Telma Cesar. It relates the relationship among architectural spaces, hybridism in relation to folk dances, and interference for creating new trends in dance in the city.

Tennyson and the revision of songSullivan, Michael Joseph Plygawko January 2017 (has links)
Writing in the 1890s, in an early account of Tennyson’s poetry, the Victorian anthologist F. T. Palgrave was keen to maintain the myth of the spontaneous singer. ‘More than once’, he recorded, Tennyson’s ‘poems sprang’ from a ‘nucleus’, ‘a brief melodious phrase’ or ‘song’, which, if not transcribed immediately, ‘fled from him irrecoverably’. It has long been the case with poets of ‘lyrics’ and ‘songs’ that their skills have been depicted as improvisatory, fleeting, or inspired. Their skills have been understood, variously, as indicative either of the most dexterous of intellects, or of brilliant but uncontrolled visions, a ‘flash’ of prophetic insight or revelation – a feel of what Shelley likens to ‘the interpenetration of a diviner nature through our own’. For many poets, however, the reality is one of inspiration that gives birth to intense manuscript activity and revision. It is now well known that Tennyson revised and re-revised, even after publication, until only weeks before his death; and yet no book-length study has pursued the significance of his manuscript revisions for the development of his style. This thesis traces the poet’s stylistic evolution through his notebooks, drafts, and printed volumes. Uncovering new literary manuscripts from Harvard, Lincoln, Cambridge, and New York, the study offers a more comprehensive picture of the poet’s craft: one alert to his evolving ambitions, and to the immense shifts that he effected in the landscape of English verse. The thesis begins by excavating how the notion of poetic ‘song’ fuelled a creative process at the heart of Tennyson’s revisions. In tracing the diverging fates of ‘lyric’ and ‘song’ across his notebooks, the opening chapter restores an important discourse for Tennysonian sonority that has comparatively declined in recent years. Chapter II examines Tennyson’s aesthetic control over the Victorian lyrical canon, drawing on a new manuscript of ‘The Golden Treasury’, the most significant anthology of the nineteenth century. Chapter III studies the notebook containing Tennyson’s first collection of verse, ‘Poems, by Two Brothers’. It reveals how much of the poor punctuation that sparked vehement attacks – and which is reproduced in modern editions – was not, in fact, inserted by the poet. Chapter IV explores how Tennyson’s most famous early songs and lyrics, published in ‘Poems, Chiefly Lyrical’, developed in tandem with his blank verse style. Chapters V and VI illuminate Tennyson’s ‘ten year silence’, which witnessed profound innovations in form, the revision of his 1832 Poems into his celebrated collection of 1842, and the creation of ‘In Memoriam’. Chapters VII and VIII piece together the notebooks, proofs, drafts, and revision copies of ‘The Princess’, Tennyson’s medley of songs and voices, lyrics and blank verse. By its end, the study reveals how the ringing qualities of his works emerged through manuscript revision: in the interplay between sonorous forms and narratives that came, over decades of change, to shape the distinctive drama of Tennyson’s style.

The present dissertation has, as a main target, the study of poetry in Memorial de Aires, by Machado de Assis. In its first part, we tried to reflect on the poetry in the novel, in the general scope of the novelistic prose: Mikhail Bakhtin refers to this subject in his essay Discourse in novel. As he considers, poetry and novel would be in opposite fields: while in the last one we confirm a tendency to a language breaking up (reflecting, direct or indirectly, the social stratification), in that one, it occurs a tendency to language centralization (reflecting the more durable social processes). Because of this particularity, poetry in novel, in its great majority, doesn t play a relevant role: either it is rejected by irony, satire, parody and critical analysis, or it remains in the form of isolated nucleus, distributed along the novelistic text. In some rare cases, as in the novel Memorial de Aires, the poetic language is not only important as an isolated voice, but also would have a determining function in the general composition style of this novel.
