SEEKING A BALANCE: THE IMPACT OF FOSTERING AUTHORIAL EMPATHY ON TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Brett, Aidan January 2018 (has links)
This study reports on the impact of the Authorial Empathy Scale (AES), a tool designed to measure responses to literature that balance attention both to authors’ aesthetic choices and to empathetic engagement with the narrative world, on teachers’ instructional practices and students’ written and spoken responses. The research is guided by the following research questions: (1) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape the teaching practice of two secondary ELA teachers? (2) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape secondary students’ responses to texts? Data consist of stimulated-recall interviews and discussion transcripts of teachers and students that were analyzed for the goals, tools, and sources of their decisions. The major findings are the use of the AES seemed to facilitate a common approach among teachers and students for generating more balanced responses to texts. However, sustaining the balanced responses faced challenges in the form of institutional rubrics, IRE discussion patterns, and the specific demands of writing tasks. Students who evidenced greater mastery of the conventions of academic writing tended to generate more authorially empathetic responses to texts. During the Authorial Empathy unit, students tended to engage in more extensive and collaborative talk turns during discussion. The results make clear the importance for teachers to select texts, tasks, and tools that support the use of the AES in guiding students to respond with authorial empathy. / Literacy & Learners

Identitätskonstruktion und Verfasserreferenz in deutschen und US-amerikanischen wissenschaftlichen Artikeln / Identity Construction and Authorial Reference in German and US-American Academic Articles

Schmidt, Julia 06 October 2014 (has links)

Conscious of Her Own Power: Hester Piozzi's Character Creation in Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson LL.D., During the Last Twenty Years of His Life

Weakley, Anne 22 April 2013 (has links)
This project highlights aspects of Hester Piozzi’s approach to biography in Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson LL. D. During the Last Twenty Years of His Life in order to analyze her use of accumulated cultural and social capital. I highlight similarities between Anecdotes and Samuel Johnson’s model for biography given in Rambler #60 and show how Piozzi adheres to his advice as she characterizes Johnson as a pious genius, intolerantly opinionated, and self-indulgent, yet unwilling to accept those qualities in others. I analyze how her editorial choices characterize her as a reliable source of information and a blameless victim of Johnson’s need for attention. This study proves Anecdotes and the corresponding entries in Thraliana are important because her deliberate revisioning of her history speaks to her ability to manipulate social expectations in order to revive her literary career and actively contribute to eighteenth-century British economy, culture, and society.

Překladatelská tvorba Jaromíra Nohavici / Jaromír Nohavica as a Translator

Borková, Anna January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the translation of Jaromir Nohavica's work. The aim of the thesis is to define Nohavica's translation style on the basis of detailed translatological analysis of his translations of Bulat Okudzhava and Vladimir Vysotsky. At the same time, the translations of Milan Dvorak and Petr Kovarik are analysed. The analysis is extended by a brief analysis of a song score which works as a verification of a hypothesis whether the chosen translations are songful not only in Jaromir Nohavica's presentation. The theoretical part of the thesis is dedicated to Jaromir Nohavica's personality, particularities of lyrics translation, author song and their authors. Thanks to a complex approach, the diploma thesis describes a translation style of a significant representative of Czech culture which has not been so far individually introduced. Key words Jaromir Nohavica, translation style, translatological analysis, authorial song, Bulat Okud- zhava, Vladimir Vysotsky, lyrics translation, score

No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniel Grizante.pdf: 2918521 bytes, checksum: 71ad07526df988433b11ffbd68ff288d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-05-15 / The objective of this thesis is the research and mapping of the changes undergone by animation with the increased use of computer technology in the creative and productive processes and the advent of new digital communication media. Due to the range of the term animation, an historical-evolutive line known as authorial animation was priorized. For this, contemporary works of animation with innovative use of computer technology were analyzed, including works from artists such as Mark Napier, Marius Watz, Zachary Lieberman, Ckoe, Hans Hoogerbrugge and Motomichi Nakamura, as well as animation series for the Internet such as Stainboy, Ninjai and Cinema Bulbo, and movies such as Waking Life, Ryan, Ghost in the Shell Innocence, among others. The analysis is based on Deleuze s theory of moving images (from which animation is not distinguished), as production of thought that result in a subtle relationship between language, media, technology, poetic intentions, esthetics and ethics, revealing true forms of reflection. From this analysis, three major themes, all extremely important for the comprehension of this kind of computer animation, emerged: the movement created through code, the synthetic moving image and the new media in animation and its influence on the creative process. It was established that Animation a language historically connected with technological media - occupies today an im-portant place in current audiovisual production since its approach of movement is fully compati-ble with contemporary concepts of constructing moving images / A presente dissertação tem como objetivo a pesquisa e mapeamento das mudanças sofri-das pela animação em seus processos criativos e produtivos com o crescente uso da computação e com o surgimento de novos meios de comunicação digitais.

Write or Perish : How Screenwriters Author their Careers

Magnéli, Johan January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate how the impermanence of contract work affects working lives, self-perceptions and the career strategies of Swedish screenwriters of finding and keeping work. Furthermore, it also explored how screenwriters experience their abilities to exercise authorial leverage over media content. Introducing the concept of “career authoring” to cover different aspects of the professional lives of screenwriters such as managing a career, establishing authorship and contractual negotiations, the study was able to embrace various mind-sets and strategies for career success. Combining ethnographical studies and textual analyses the study was able to ascertain that the contingency of the Swedish film and television industries necessitates strategies to cultivate reputations, industrial visibility, consciously receive writing credits and conform to a traditional division of labour. Moreover, the study illuminated the importance of contractual negotiations for career success in terms of both retaining and wavering rights to their work. Strategies for exercise increased authorial leverage were not only confined to the script, but extended beyond the page, where the latter  accentuated processes of reconfiguring traditional conceptions of screenwriters’ abilities to influence media content.

Concurences poétiques : identités collectives et identités singulières autour de la "Pléiade" (1549 - 1586) / Poetry competition : collective identities and singular identities around the « Pléiade » (1549-1586)

Bonifay, Florence 02 December 2016 (has links)
From the Deffence, et illustration de la langue françoyse (1549) to Ronsard's tomb texts collected by Binet in 1586, the literary sociability depicted in some three hundred volumes of poetry gathering together about seventy poets is regarded as the mean to construct identities both collective and individual. Indeed the flurry of common topics is at the origin of a literary emulation and makes the emergence of a "poetic field" noticeable; so the position of each poet is both defined with an identification to groups or with a differentiation to defend their proper styles.Being "a poet" is the identity collectively valued. Altogether on Marot's tracks, the point is to make this "craft" prestigious - printed publication makes it visible - and to convince the greats of its political importance. The unifying label is subdivided in collective identities with restricted outlines like a popular topic (the "Amours"), a language ("poëtes françoys") or eventually a location (the poets from the river Clain, the Gascon poets, etc). Therefore this fragmentation leads to an attempt of classification of value. This is at the origin of disagreements (some provincial poets against the emerging Parisian milieu for instance), even conflicts (modern poets against old poets, Christian poets versus pagan poets, etc), as well as an increase of leading figures. Meanwhile each author attempts to defend their own singularities, notably by working on the ethos of the solitary poet or of the melancholic poet and endeavours to open new poetic paths, within a collective movement defending originality. Hence the tension opposing the hierarchical organisation and the assertion of the right to be different and thus unique.

Dialogické jednání jako možnost rozvoje osobnostních dispozic učitele / Acting with the Inner Partner as a Way to Develop Teacher's Personal Dispositions

NOTA, Josef January 2014 (has links)
Dissertation thesis Acting with the Inner Partner as a Way to Develop Teacher's Personal Dispositions focuses on specifics of a psychosomatic discipline called Acting with the Inner Partner, in professional training of future teachers. This discipline represents the pedagogy of experimenting with the phenomenon of self-speech in experimental conditions. The emphasis is on the personality of future teachers, as well as on cultivation of their self-reflection. This should lead to a becoming a professional teacher with an authorial approach and authentic acting. The objective of the dissertation thesis is a deeper understanding of psychosomatic disciplines pedagogy, whereas my very own teaching experience at The Department of Psychology and Pedagogy is essential. Specifics of future teachers' personal preparation in the view of psychosomatic disciplines, represents the basic part of this work. Another part focuses on the experience with Acting with the Inner Partner, at first described by a student and later by an assistant (lecturer) and researcher. Common features of so called psychosomatic condition are discovered. The author also searches the possibility of exporting Acting with the Inner Partner out of the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology at South Bohemia University. As the methodology of video recording analysis has not been accomplished yet, the starting points for further research are described. The empirical part focuses on typology documented on students' written self-reflections. The objective is to describe the assistant's experience. The interpretation of the research results shows the need to distinguish between the terms 'written teaching self-reflections' and 'written teaching reflections, commonly described as feedback.

In the case of the Chiquitano in the Portal do Encantado-MT, who had positioned themselves as indigenous people to have the right to remain in their territory, the first strategy was to trigger the mother tongue which had taken refuge in the memory of their elders. Thus, the focus of this thesis is to present how, through “memory bilingualism” , this people could trigger an interactive process of resistance, cultural and political positioning of identity assertion. An identity that those who remembered (the elders) were able to reconstruct, given the common unitary point (belonging) of representation and impulsion to the experience of traditional knowledge. This knowledge, inherited from a common past, provoked/articulated/triggered a fight in view of the hegemony imposed by the settlers and their ways of homogenization of knowledge, culture and life. Hence, based on the results of this study, which entangles decolonial authors and authors who treat the language as discourse, it is possible to state that the Chiquitano, when triggered the mother tongue which was stored in their memory, could reach the dwelling for their being and gradually establish a decolonial process, identifying their identity and their place of belonging. That’s because, collectively, they acted and promoted the interaction of different generations of people. Through reflection, they found themselves, creating themselves and their “new” world. By demanding their own school, they produced science. Giving value to the ancestral knowledge, they defined the curriculum and pedagogic practices. In this way, they recorded their culture, which was dormant in the language memory. They produced an authorial and coping pedagogy. The valorization of their knowledge and their being created the possibilities for fighting the dominant power. Memory bilingualism was the guiding basis for the training of teachers and their pedagogic practices, as well as for the assertion of an identity. Everything together, provided the resurgence of a “being more” (FREIRE, 2014) and led the sociocultural vitalization of the Chiquitano do Brasil in the Portal de Encantado-MT.
