In this study we investigate the recruitment, investment and practices of Gypsy education, of the municipal unity Sagaiika of West Achaea. More specifically it is examined the perceptions of gypsies for school and schooling and their investment in education through their practices. For these to be understood, we incorporate and focus on the broader social environment and gypsies’ culture.
The research builds on group interviews with Gypsies, the way of their living and at field observation. Regarding to the interpretation, we based on the theoretical framework of Basil Bernstein. The investigation revealed that the gypsies have instrumental view of the school. They also have high rates of school dropouts and this was attributed to external factors mainly and to internal secondarily.

Friluftsliv in Swedish Physical Education - a Struggle of Values : Educational and Sociological PerspectivesBackman, Erik January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine some of the educational and sociological conditions underlying the production of teaching in friluftsliv within the Physical Education (PE) subject in Swedish compulsory school. Despite the value awarded to the Scandinavian outdoor practice friluftsliv, in both the national PE curriculum document and in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in Sweden, it does not seem to be thoroughly implemented in compulsory school teaching. Through analyses of interviews with PE teachers and PE teacher educators, as well as of curriculum documents, using the perspectives of Basil Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu, I explore conditions underlying the expressions of friluftsliv teaching in Swedish PE. The pedagogic discourse for friluftsliv in Swedish PE is described as a teaching that should take place in a natural setting remote from civilisation, involve risks, and require time, technical equipment, financial resources, and cooperation. This discourse for friluftsliv is shown to be similar to the values emphasised in friluftsliv education in PETE. Although proven to be difficult to implement in school, this discourse appear to form the conception of friluftsliv teaching for PE teachers in Sweden. Under the influence of the performance code, friluftsliv is transformed into outdoor activities with which the PE teachers are familiar, or is totally left out of PE teaching. A turn towards options that are seen as unthinkable in relation to the current pedagogic discourse may benefit the achievement of the aims set out in the national PE curriculum. Values such as environmental awareness, sustainable development and cultural perspectives on the landscape could strengthen the classification of friluftsliv and PE in compulsory school. Further, an increase of socially critical and constructivist perspectives during PETE could make unthinkable options in friluftsliv thinkable and contribute to a break with the reproduction of teaching practices in PE. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 1: In press. Paper 2: Submitted.</p>

An Adornoesque Ethics: The Problem of Damaged LifeWilburn, Heather 01 May 2014 (has links)
The problem that my dissertation addresses is the connection between modern reason and the ethical failures of modernity. My project is centered against the background of Enlightenment reason's project of rationalization, from which I argue that modern conceptions of ethics are problematic because they involve an abstraction from the reality of suffering individuals. I take up Adorno's response to this problematic and show that ethical reflection needs to be restored to the physical world of particulars in their damaged state. Philosophically, I press the need to reflect on ethical conditions and the values of our moral theories. My overall objective is to show how an Adornoesque ethics can position us in a critical and resistant mode of thinking within actual sites of suffering and damage in late modern conditions.

The Songs of Georgia Stitt Hybridity: Art Song and Musical TheatreJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: A resurgence of the American art song is underway. New art song composers such as Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, and Georgia Stitt are writing engaging and challenging songs that are contributing to this resurgence of art song among college students. College and University musical theatre programs are training performers to be versatile and successful crossover artists. Cross-training in voice is training a performer to be capable of singing many different genres of music effectively and efficiently, which in turn creates a hybrid performer. Cross-training and hybridity can also be applied to musical styles. Hybrid songs that combine musical theatre elements and classical art song elements can be used as an educational tool and create awareness in musical theatre students about the American art song genre and its origins while fostering the need to learn about various styles of vocal repertoire.
American composers Leonard Bernstein and Ned Rorem influenced hybridity of classical and musical theatre genres by using their compositional knowledge of musicals and their classical studies to help create a new type of art song. In the past, academic institutions have been more accepting of composers whose careers began in classical music crossing between genres, rather than coming from a more popularized genre such as musical theatre into the classical world. Continued support in college vocal programs will only help the new hybrid form of American art song to thrive.
Trained as a classical pianist and having studied poetry and text setting, Georgia Stitt understands the song structure and poetry skills necessary to write a contemporary American art song. This document will examine several of Carol Kimball’s “Component of Style” elements, explore other American composers who have created a hybrid art song form and discuss the implementation of curriculum to create versatile singers. The study will focus on three of Georgia Stitt’s art songs that fit this hybrid style and conclude with a discussion about the future of hybridity in American art song. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2018

Teacher Communication in Title I Elementary Music Classrooms: Perceptions of Elementary Music Classroom TeachersMason, Lindsey Lea 12 1900 (has links)
The increasing cultural diversity in the United States has brought not only richness, but also complex challenges, to various segments of American society, particularly with regard to public schools. As the student population continues to diversify while teacher population remains predominately White, female, and middle class, teacher awareness in the classroom might be an integral piece to assist students marginalized by stereotypes in feeling more empowered in the school community. Through qualitative data collection and analysis, and framed by Basil Bernstein’s language code theory, this study explored teachers’ perceptions of how classroom interactions, in light of differences in communication, might impact students of different socio-economic backgrounds from the teacher. The findings of this study indicated that the participants expressed a desire to connect with all of their students, regardless of their background. They also discussed challenges that made relationships difficult, such as feelings of disconnect from their Title I students and their families based on differences in home life and background. This dissonance was often difficult for the participants to reconcile due to pressures and difficulties in their teaching situations, such as the large number of students and the scheduling of classes, curricular pressures, and other district expectations such as after-school ensembles. Implications for practicing music teachers and teacher education include ways to understand students’ communities and rethinking ways of approaching relevant terminology in education.

Nombres presque premiers jumeaux sous une conjecture d'Elliott-Halberstam / Twin almost primes under a Elliott-Halberstam conjecture.Debouzy, Nathalie 28 June 2018 (has links)
We improve Bombieri’s asymptotic sieve to localise the variables. As a consequence, we prove, under a Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, that there exists an infinity of twins almost prime. Those are prime numbers p such that for all ε > 0, p −2 is either a prime number or can be written as p1p2 where p1 and p2 are prime and p1 < Xε, and we give the explicit asymptotic. In addition to this main work, there are two other chapters: the first one gives an asymptotic of prime numbers p such p−2is either a prime number or a product of three primes without using a preliminary sieve and so a stronger conjecture was needed. Hence this part shows the strength of the preliminary sieve and presents a few detailed sommations, most of them involving the Möbius fonction, that could be useful. The second one presents an easy and explicit method to calculate an average order of multiplicative functions.

The significance of class : A discourse analysis of articles written by teachers of Swedish and the intersection between the teachers’ notion of class and the described practiceSzewczyk, Karolina January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study is to illustrate how teachers of Swedish relate to class and whether the notion of class affect the practice described by the teachers. The following questions are used to attain the purpose of the study: o What significance is attributed to the notion of class in the articles written by the teachers? o Which connections are made between the teacher’s notion of class and the descriptions of their practices as teachers? The material consists of articles written by teachers of Swedish in the publications by Svensklärarföreningen, the journal Svenskläraren and the annual Svensklärarföreningens årsskrift , during the years 2014-2020. A discourse analytic method, inspired by James Paul Gee, is used to analyze the material and the theoretical base consists of the educational sociologist Basil Bernstein’s concepts of the restricted and elaborated code, as well as the horizontal and vertical discourse. The study shows, that it is unusual for the teachers to explicitly write about class. Secondly, the study shows that the Swedish teachers, through their described practices, can be said to attribute class a significance, but that this is not considered to be decisive for the students’ opportunities to succeed in school. This since the teachers express, in different ways, a possibility to include all students in the teaching through a functioning practice.
