Kulturarvsdigitalisering : Skiljer sig praktiken från teorin?

Hjelm, Sofia, Amri Holmqvist, Viveka January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine the similarities and differences between best practice literature regarding digitization and an existing cultural heritage digitization project. It also aims to determine whether this literature is of any help during an actual project of digitization. These results were achieved by examining literature regarding best practices in digitization and analyzing how well an actual project correlates to this advice. The information about the Digidaily project was obtained through two qualitative interviews as well as the project blog. The outcome of our research showed that although there are a great many similarities between theory and practice, the project in question was not helped by literature. However the outcome suggests that it might be of great help to smaller, less experienced institutions.

Rektorns ord : - en uppgift i praktisk kunskap

Halldin, Olof January 2014 (has links)

Biblioteket. / Who has the power over cultural heritage? A case study of digitization selection criteria used at Kungl. Biblioteket.

Johansson, Sara January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is performed as a case study, and has had the aim to study who has the power over cultural heritage, by studying the digitization selection criteria at KB and what influences there can be on the digitization selection process. The theory of the arm’s length principle, (Mangset, Kunst og makt, 2013) the professional model, (Rothstein, 2010), that digitization re-shape and re-contextualize cultural heritage material, (Dahlström et al. 2013), and different concepts will influence the digitization selection process has been used in this study. A qualitative research with document study and informant interview and e-mail interview has been conducted. The documents that were studied are related to legislation documents from the responsible authorities of KB; Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education and Research as well as the present and former internal digitization strategies at KB. Informant interviews and e-mail interviews has been performed with management and staff at KB to examine influences in the digitization selection process at KB. The empirical material was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis method. The study concluded that the digitization selection criteria is build around the commission for KB and that access and preservation are key factors to consider for KB. The study also concludes that government, KB management and KB staff all have got influence and power over cultural heritage as has the different criteria as; the material itself and copyright issues. Another conclusion was that the government rules over cultural heritage held at KB on an arm’s length distance. / Program: Masterprogram: Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap, Digitala bibliotek och informationstjänster

Massdigitalisering och kvalitativ digitalisering : En jämförelse av digitaliseringen på nationalbiblioteken i Norge och Sverige / Mass digitization and qualitative digitization : a comparative study of digitization by national libraries in Norway and Sweden.

Nilsson, Christoffer January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to compare mass digitization and qualitative digitization, to see how the digitization process and the digitalized material differ. The study emanates from the mass digitization as it is performed at the National Library in Norway, and the qualitative digitization at the Royal Library in Sweden. The method used is document studies combined with mail interviews. The focus is upon the practical operation, to which counts: “purpose &amp; selection”, “preparation, image capturing and processing”, “metadata &amp; text encoding”, “quality assessment”, “storage of digital originals and copies” and “display”. The result showed that the mass digitization automatize the process as far as possible and uses uniform methods of whole collections. They have minimal preparation, processing and quality controls, if it doesn’t make the digitization quicker. During qualitative digitization the most parts are done manually, where every moment and object is prepared, processed and controlled considering what is best for the original. The result of the product of digitization – the digital documents – showed that qualitative digitization prefers aspects like caution and security, as they among other things uses the well established file format TIFF, and uses sufficiently high quality in methods to preserve all information from analogue documents, and store both processed and unprocessed versions of the digitization. Mass digitization is more insecure as they use the non-established file format JPEG2000, and the digital master is processed, compressed (lossless) and cut.

Likhet och särart : en studie av Internationella biblioteket och dess besökare ur ett mångfaldsperspektiv / Difference and equal dignity : a study of the International Library and its visitors from a perspective of diversity

Gustafsson Chen, Anna, Soares, Tatiana January 2008 (has links)
The underlying purpose of this study is to see whether a library focused solely on providing literature in other languages than Swedish serves as a unifying, integrating force, or as an agent for division and exclusion. The study focuses on the International Library in Stockholm. The authors have created a profile of the visitors of the selected library, concerning their characteristics, their library habits and their perceptions of the International library. This profile has then been compared with the staff’s perception of the visitors as a group. To assemble data in order to create a profile of the visitors, a survey has been conducted looking into factors such as age, language, native country, educational level, reasons for coming to the library and attitudes towards the library. A small group of the staff, five persons, have been interviewed to inquire about their attitudes towards and perceptions of the visitors, as well as attitudes towards issues such as multilingualism, and their estimation of the importance of and right to literature in ones mother tongue. The authors found that the visitors are a very heterogeneous group of people, with various backgrounds and language skills. A larger number than expected were Swedish speaking and ethnic Swedes. The staff’s impression of the visitors was largely in accordance with our findings. The staff expressed a strong belief in the idea that access to literature in one’s mother tongue can actually be helpful when one is trying to settle in a new country. Although other libraries may be reluctant to handle literature in foreign languages, the staff of the International Library feels that their expertise helps to ensure the inhabitants of the greater Stockholm area good quality and access to literature in many languages. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Urval vid digitalisering av affischer på Kungl. biblioteket / Selection criteria for the digitization of posters at the National Library of Sweden

Stening Soppela, Ingrid January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents a study aiming to identify the selection criteria for the digitization of posters at the National Library of Sweden (Kungl. biblioteket). The theory is that cultural heritage institutions are empowered to decide how our cultural heritage is presented as they select what items (or, as in this study, posters) will be digitized. The poster is studied as it is an interesting media form which historically was an important means of communication. The poster can represent and reflect historical events and opinions in society. The posters chosen to be digitized, will represent a part of our cultural heritage as presented on the internet. The research questions are to find out the purpose of digitization, to identify the selection criteria, why the collection of posters is digitized, which posters have been chosen and what were the selections criteria. The study aims to compare principles with practice. Selection policy documents are studied and the poster collection is studied in documents, on the internet and by interviewing representatives at the National Library of Sweden. The conclusion is that although the policy documents are indeed thorough regarding detailed selection criteria, it is actually practical reasons (such as available resources) that finally decide what material is digitized. The situation that the cultural heritage institutions are constructing our visual cultural heritage is probably unavoidable, but the problem is that if choices are not made on the correct grounds, this will have the consequence that the presentation of our cultural heritage will not be representative. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Närhet och distans i det virtuella referenssamtalet. En studie av Fråga bibliotekets chattfunktion. / Social presence and distance in the virtual reference interview. A study of Fråga bibliotekets chat service.

Kleinhenz, Christian January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of social distance used by the librarians and users in the virtual reference interview. With a conversational analysis and applied politeness theory 49 chat transcripts where analysed in order to answer the question of how the interlocutors positioned themselves regarding the social distance between them. By identifying what communicative strategies where used the following results were found. Generally the social distance between librarians and users is low in the Swedish virtual reference interview. Even though both parties used informal and casual language the results indicate that the librarians face wants were valued slightly higher than the users which were illustrated by a some what higher social distance in the stages of the conversations when the librarians face was under most threat. The conversations were relatively symmetrical and it was also concluded that feedback and positive utterances contributed to lowering the social distance. Thus the analysed transcripts can be said represent a form of institutional conversation that is of a personal and informal character. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Biblioteket IRL och URL. Om bibliotekswebbars relation till omvärlden och det fysiska biblioteket / The library IRL and URL. On the relations of library webs to the surrounding world and the physical library

Apelqvist, Kristina, Pettersson Svärd, Ewa January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the surrounding world and the library with respect to the library’s need to provide a Library 2.0 web site. We also explore the relationship between the physical and the virtual library. Our research objects are the public libraries of Stockholm and the Umeå region, that maintain the web sites Biblioteket.se and minabibliotek.se respectively. By applying Dorte Skot-Hansen&apos;s theory of rationales we found that the Stockholm public library is acting in accordance with the experience rationale, whereas the libraries of Umeå are influenced by the instrumental rationale. Furthermore, by applying Antonio Gramsci’s theories of hegemony and struggle for power and neo-institutional theory to our data, we conclude that these libraries are strongly influenced by the surrounding society to provide Library 2.0 web sites in order to maintain their position within the library field and possibly to be considered foremost in that field. By failing to implement a Library 2.0 web our research objects would risk losing their positions within the library field, a declining influence in the cultural hegemony, fewer visitors and a reduced budget. We also found that the relationship between the physical and the virtual library has not been evaluated. Furthermore we found that the web sites do not make any impact on the physical libraries. These two findings might be due to the so far rather immature implementations. / Program: Bibliotekarie

De äldre samlingarnas betydelse för kulturarvet : En studie om hur tre bibliotek arbetar med äldre material i förhållande till nationell praxis. / The older collections meaning for the cultural heritage : A study of three libraries work with older material in relation to national rules.

Åberg, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study is to compare how three local librarieshandle their collections, and to compare this with handlingcollections at national level. I have investigated librarian’sopinions of their collections and how they take care andpreserve them for the future. It has also been studied if thelibraries collections of old material contains more than justold book rarities. In this study I had compared my respondents answer withSvante Beckman and Magdalena Hillström`s theory ofmuseum`s four idealtypes. Their view of a museum is in theforms of a treasury, archive, school and a theatre. Theanswers of the interviews are compared with the fourdifferent ideals from the museum, and from that conclusionsare drawn. The main method that I have used for this study isqualitative interviews that handle different aspects ofthis subject. My respondents have been four differentlibrarians from three local libraries in three counties. The results of the study were that all three libraries saw thattheir collections both have a regional and national value, andthey represent both the social and cultural history of thatcounty. Another result was that all three libraries felt that theaudience should have the pleasure to view both the originalof the collections and digital versions. Finally the studyshowed that the libraries would like that older collections inlibraries should get the same protection as Cultural Heritage. / Program: Bibliotekarie
