Cornelia, Karlsson, Johanna, Birgersson, Anna, Persson January 2022 (has links)
Small businesses have a significant role in the development of Sweden'smarkets, where they provide great job opportunities and are responsible for halfof Sweden's GDP. Small businesses face challenges as they often have a lack ofknowledge and resources. Small businesses can access the basic assets but theyhave difficulties establishing a large and significant network as they are smalland unknown in the market. In that case incubators can be of great use.Incubators help small businesses create a more rapid growth in order to then beable to survive independently on the market. According to the authors of thestudy there is a lack of understanding how small businesses work with anincubator and how small businesses can create opportunities to expand theirnetwork based on cooperation with the incubators. The problem statement andpurpose of this study are formulated to increase the understanding of how smallbusinesses can promote their network and how the incubators activities cansupport and provide resources. To be able to answer the purpose and the problem statement of this study, relevant theory and empirical data have been collected. The theoreticalframework finds that the small businesses internal and external networks areessential for survival and growth, where the entrepreneurs impact is clarified. To develop a well-functioning network, the theory finds that a collaborationwith the incubator and its network can aid small businesses. A self-designedmodel clarifies this. The theoretical framework also includes an explanation ofnetwork structured clusters, what defines a cluster, and the actors within thestructure. The empirical collection is made from a qualitative method wheresemi-structured interviews have been conducted. Six interviews were conductedwith founders from each small business who previously have or are currentlycollaborating with an incubator. The empirical collection gave the authors ofthis study an understanding of each small business' own experiences. By compiling the theory with the empirical data, it was possible to compare andlink the information in an analysis chapter. The analysis resulted in adevelopment of a self constructed model from the theory where the incubatorand cluster were brought together. The conclusion showed that it is of greatimportance to maintain the network relations within the small business but alsowith other entrepreneurs and actors to create new and beneficial contacts, bothinternally and externally. The study also showed that the incubators networkstructure and cluster can be seen as an opportunity for small business growth. Ifthere are deficiencies in a small business network there is a risk that resourcesand assets will be negatively affected and the company may lose experience andnew innovation, which is something that the study has shown that the incubatorcan provide for small businesses. It also emerged that the individualentrepreneurs initiative is essential in terms of small business development, success and ability to control the result.

Development of a Miniaturized, Wireless-Controlled Incubator Microscope: a Comprehensive Software Solution for Continuous Cell Imaging / Utveckling av ett Miniatyriserat, Trådlöst Kontrollerat Inkubatormikroskop: en Heltäckande Mjukvarulösning för Kontinuerlig Cellavbildning

Hagström, Filip January 2024 (has links)
In life science practices, cell culturing is one of the most common procedures in biological experiments involving the use of microscopes. Cell cultures are typically viewed with a microscope to monitor changes after adjusting the environment for the cells or to intermittently supervise for cellular behavior. However, it is currently not possible to continuously monitor cellular behavior due to the absence of solutions for wireless control of a microscope to image cell cultures while maintaining the environment conducive to cell growth. This thesis provides a miniaturized, cost-effective and versatile microscope down-scaled enough to operate inside incubators. This versatility encompasses the ability to switch between bright-field mode and fluorescence mode, capture images in sequences, save said sequential images to a micro SD-card as well as enabling downloading of individual images to a local file manager. All these features are done through a user interface set up by either a local WiFi or access point from the microscope, making the operation possible through wireless connection. In addition, this thesis is a continuation of a previous thesis that was completed in the spring of 2023. The purpose of this thesis is to improve on the result of the main research question of the previous work.

Cheng Chu-Yuan Unknown Date (has links)
Abstract The amount of investment, the revenues and the employment of firms, and the number of start-ups, within Taiwan biotechnology industry, promoted by the government, increased gradually. However, the level of biotechnology, compared with other developed countries, seems still a lot to be upgraded. Moreover, the biotechnology industry developed in Taiwan is still in the early stage. Therefore, the limited key resources such as talents, capital, technology, if can be concentrated in a specific region, then the emerging industry like biotechnology industry may be developed faster. The study is, use of the field and case study, and the secondary data collected, to explore the key success factors in the development of biotechnology industry clusters. The cases studied include American biotechnology industry clusters, like Philadelphia, New Haven, Boston, RTP-North Carolina, and Sweden biotechnology industry clusters, like Stockholm-Uppsala, Gothenbrug, Malmo-Lund, Linkoping, Umea. Because the biotechnology firms are the building blocks of biotechnology industry clusters, it is first to explore the key success factors of the formations of new ventures from the perspective of business administration. From the perspective of cluster development, it is to explore the key success factors of the formations of new clusters such as the production factors, the related and supporting industry, the growth and feedback of clusters. The mechanism about new ventures growing forever to sustain the clusters development is then explored. From the experiences of these developed countries in the clusters development, the study proposes some suggestions about the policy making on the biotechnology clusters development in Taiwan. From the study, there comes the following finding:The biotechnology ventures leverage the resources from the environment to overcome the limited resources within the firms. The biotechnology clusters can be happened nowhere. First, there will be existed some professional production factors such as universities and research institutes, then come the science-park and incubator. The universities and research institutes define the characteristics of the science-park and incubator. The mechanisms about the formation of new ventures such as the seed fund become the driving forces of biotechnology clusters. The seed fund or the science-park and incubator are the intangible or tangible linkage mechanisms about the formation of biotechnology clusters.

An Exploratory Empirical Investigation of Information Processing among Incubator-Housed Manufacturers during Channel Member Selection

Fontenot, Gwen F. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to conduct an exploratory study of the information processing utilized by incubator-housed manufacturers during channel member selection. The study included the evaluation of the decision models used by the manufacturers as well as criteria used in the selection process. The study was specifically designed to achieve the following objectives. First, the research was to identify the evaluation modes used by the manufacturers as either compensatory or noncompensatory. Second, the study was to evaluate the effect of the task on the selection of the evaluation model(s) used during the channel member selection process. Third, the study was to evaluate the effect of the selected decision strategy on the amount of information used during the decision process. Finally, the study was to identify and examine the importance of the criteria used by the manufacturers in the selection process. The methodology in this study consisted of primary research using protocol analysis as the main data gathering technique. A ranking instrument was also mailed to the respondents prior to the protocol session. The population for the study was identified as all manufacturers located in publicly-sponsored business incubators. A total of 235 incubators were in existence with approximately 47 percent of them being publicly-sponsored. Approximately 42 percent of the incubators house at least one manufacturing firm. It was estimated that there were approximately 46 manufacturing firms located in public incubators. A sample of six was used in this study. The statistical analysis included frequencies, cross tabulations, correlations, paired comparisons, and measures of association. The findings of this study suggest that the incubator-housed manufacturers' choice of evaluation models was not affected by the task nor did the selected strategy influence the amount of information used by the manufacturers. The findings indicate a need for further research to evaluate the relationships brought forth in this study. Based on the conclusions and findings of this study, recommendations for further research were given.

Publicly Funded Support of Technology-Based Ventures

Norrman, Charlotte January 2005 (has links)
<p>This thesis is about publicly funded support of technology-based ventures. These ventures are regarded as solutions to create growth and societal development. They are commonly originated from universities, institutes or other firms and their products or techniques are commonly new or at least different from the ordinary. They are therefore considered as being of higher risk than generic new firms, but if successful they may also give higher returns. Hence, a range of efforts has been undertaken to support them. However, concerning the issue of public support, gaps of research have been exposed.</p><p>This thesis aims to give some answers on the question of what characterizes the public support given to technology-based ventures in Sweden. It elucidates two types of public support, the “configuration-type” and the “process-type” The first is studied by using statistical databases built upon the conditional loans and the innovation subsidies that were offered by Sweden Innovation Centre during the years 1994-2003. The second type concerns incubator support, and investigates how best practise incubators can be evaluated. Among the results, it can be mentioned that different support actors use different selection criteria depending on their goals, however the credibility of the applying venture is crucial for approval. Furthermore, a framework for best practice evaluation is developed.</p> / Report code: LiU-Tek-Lic 2005:72. / The massive use of technology in health care has increased the effectiveness of medical procedures, with consequent improvement of quality of life of patients. However, such technologies carry inherent risks that can result in damage when misused or maintained. In this context, are the medical and hospital equipment (MHE) that can present problems that result in misdiagnosis, inappropriate therapies or which compromise the safety of users. The periodic assessment, especially of the metrological performance constitutes an important means to achieve the MHE safe use. The solutions for such evaluation are tightly constrained to the specific characteristics of each type of MHE and can hardly be reutilized for others. Although not found in the literature a general solution that can be applied to certain types of MHE, this indicates the feasibility of application, in function of the constant technological advances in the medical equipment industry. Thus, this work presents a methodology for evaluating the metrological performance of MHE and for such, a system was developed that brings together measuring instruments integrated into software for testing manager. This software performs the acquisition and monitoring of measurement data related to the metrological variables of equipment under test, assesses the adequacy of these data to preestablished metrological requirements and issues a compliance report. The system allows configuration of various parameters, enabling the execution of metrological performance evaluations in different types of MHE. For verification purposes, the system was configured to perform evaluations of high frequency electrosurgical scalpels and neonatal incubators. The results show the effectiveness of the developed methodology and the efficiency of the computational platform for metrological evaluation of MHE.
