Modern relations : A qualitative interview study on the digitization of relationships / Moderna relationer : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om digitalisering av relationer

Angel, Jamel January 2022 (has links)
This interview study investigates people's experiences and interactions online to give more nuance to the context of modern relationships, and what the perception of digitized relationships could mean. The study investigates digitized relationships in terms of friendship, love, intimacy, and social media. With these in focus, I discuss broadly the interviewees’ experiences of friendship, intimacy, and love within the use of social media and online dating. Firstly, how the use of it can cause difficulties and impact their perception of themselves and at relationships. Secondly, how this in turn creates meaningful and lasting relationships.  In this study, I had two focus groups that I referred to as gamers and socials, the first group included five who identified as men and the second group included four that identified as women. From the age of 23 to 35 and originates from different parts of Europe. After the interview, four themes were developed: The use of digitization and social media, friendship, love relationships and online and offline.

When Social Allergies Flare Up In Close Relationships: A Relational Turbulence Model Explanation

Hochstadt, Naomi 01 January 2013 (has links)
Romantic relationships commonly endure rough patches. The relational turbulence model and the social allergy phenomenon may account for such rough transitions. A social allergy is an idiosyncratic social behavior that involuntarily stirs up irritation in an individual, either with or without the intention of the transgressor. As the behavior is repeated, tolerance for the bothersome allergen dwindles. This paper investigates the connections between relational turbulence and social allergies. The relational turbulence model describes individuals’ severe reactions to various turning points in an interpersonal relationship, and combines the effects of increased intimacy, relational uncertainty, and partner interference. Based on the turbulence model, the author predicted curvilinear relationships between intimacy and social allergen occurrence as well as between intimacy and negative emotional impact of social allergens. Based on the social allergen literature, the author predicted social allergen occurrence and repeated arguments about social allergens would both associate positively with relationship turbulence. Partial support was found for each prediction.

Tinder: kärlekens omvandling? : En kvalitativ studie om konsekvenserna kring den digitala dejtingkulturen / Tinder: the transformation of love? : A qualitative study on the consequences of digital dating culture

Fröling, Nora, Lockström, Simon January 2024 (has links)
Dating today is different from 12 years ago. With the increased digitalization, dating apps such as Tinder have become increasingly common and one of the largest platforms for digital dating. Tinder's design is based on a gamified swipe function where users choose who they want to meet through pictures and text descriptions. The purpose of this study is to problematize whether dating apps have a negative impact in creating relationships and intimacy since Tinder's introduction to the market in a late modernity. Through a qualitative study, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Tinder users aged 20-45. The material was analyzed using social psychological theories based on Giddens (1995) theories of intimacy and creating relationships. Using a critical approach, the material was analyzed using reflexive analysis, with the results showing that intimacy and relationships have been greatly influenced by the emergence of Tinder and are undergoing a transformation. We found, among other things, that the vast selection creates complications in finding love and that the identity we create online is not always representative of our offline identity, further complicating dating in the digital late modern society.

Ben Jelloul, Maissa 12 1900 (has links)
The present thesis examines the mechanisms of surveillance and control at work in intimate talk-shows produced by and for Tunisians after the 2010–2011 insurrection. Combining close reading with content analysis, the thesis examines a corpus of 20 stories from the five intimate talk-shows that aired on local television and radio channels, in the Tunisian Arabic dialect, between February 2019 and April 2020. The thesis also examines a secondary corpus of 31 stories and an exploratory corpus of over one hundred episodes covering a broader period (2011–2020). Often associated with scandal (al-fadhiha) and trashiness, these shows stage testimonies of Tunisian intimacies within a context marked by political and identity tensions, the reform and privatization of the media industry, as well as demands of free expression and al-soutrah. Through the concept of the pan-synopticon (Foucault, 1975 ; Mathiesen, 1997), the thesis analyzes these television and radio programs as variations of a surveillance dispositif where the many watch the many. In this way, the thesis interrogates how these shows contribute to the shaping of Tunisian intimacies. Drawing on critical intimacy studies and feminist affect studies, the present thesis theorizes intimacy as a “wild thing” that takes shape when bodies move towards their objects of attachment. These “orientations” (Ahmed, 2006) may follow predefined lines or deviate from normative trajectories. Intimacies are oriented by norms, values, ideals, and discourses that can vary across contexts (Berlant, 1998; Berlant and Warner, 1998). From this perspective, the thesis explores how these programs articulate within a broader dispositif (Hall, 1986) to expose and talk about Tunisian intimacies.

Adult friendship and the boundaries of marriage

Dunstan, Lynn Valerie 11 1900 (has links)
Four core themes characterised this study: (a) adult friendship, particularly across the gender line, (b) the association between friendship and psychological well-being, (c) the role of attachment in friendship processes, and (d) the influence of the boundaries of marriage on friendship. Twenty six individuals were included in the initial research and 19 subjects participated in the main study. Theoretical principles of social cognition, constructive alternativism and attachment guided the collection and interpretation of data, which was collated, interpreted and then presented in case-study format. Self-with-other representation played a major role in data interpretation. Investigation into the structure and processes of friendship revealed it to be a complex and fragile relationship, defined both idiosyncratically and existentially, as well as by specific distinguishing features, such as trust, loyalty and intimacy . Attachment orientation and positive friendship experiences were noted as being contributory to the sense of interpersonal intimacy associated with feelings of well-being. Positive association was registered between 'secure' attachment orientation and self-ratings of well-being and happiness. Opposite-sex friendship emerged as an exclusive relational type, both similar to, and different from, samesex friendship and romantic love relationships. Its ambiguous role is evidently compounded by the latent sexuality in heterosocial relationships. Respondents reported cases of opposite-sex friendships metamorphosing into romantic love relationships and, less frequently, vice versa. Manifest in attachment and relational mental models, marital boundaries can facilitate or inhibit friendship. On both direct- and meta-perspective levels, securely-attached respondents were relatively accepting of opposite-sex friendships within a marital context. Insecurely-attached subjects tended to construe them as threatening to the marital reality. Responses to this threat varied: avoidantly-attached individuals used ego-protective mechanisms such as denial and repression, whereas · the anxious-ambivalent attachment orientation seemed more closely associated with feelings of mistrust and jealousy, expressed through anger and anxiety. Personal boundary structure plays an incisive role ln adult friendship. Thick-boundaried personalities seemed particularly conscious of preserving marital identity. They were more territorial with regard to friendships within the marital context, and more conscious of social rules pertaining thereto. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)
