Gouverner le peuple chrétien : édition critique, traduction et commentaire des traités royaux d'Hincmar, archevêque de Reims (845-882) / Ruling Christian People : edition, Translation into French and Commentary of the royal Treatises of Archbishop Hincmar of Rheims (845-882)

Valette, Clementine 22 November 2014 (has links)
This study gives a critical edition for five treatises written by archbishop of Rheims Hincmar (845-882), between 873 and 882, the aim of which is to define the royal function : De regis persona (873), De fide Carolo regi seruanda (875), Ad Ludouicum Balbum (877), Ad Carolum Crassum (879) and Ad episcopos pro institutione Carolomanni (882). An original French translation complements this edition. Hincmar’s theological and political works are situated in the political and intellectual context of the second half of the ninth century : when carolingian kingship underwent successive reconfigurations. The archbishop of Rheims, thanks to thirty years of practice of episcopal function, tries to guide three generations of Carolingian kings. The enquiry into the sources reveals firstly, the importance of the Bible; secondly, the weight of late antique patristic thought; thirdly the work and reading methods of the bishop. The commentary highlights various elements of the Carolingian context and the original way Hincmar uses his sources. The vision of power he progressively develops thus comes to light, regarding the power of the bishop, warden and double of the king, within an exhortative discourse.

Roy-Turgeon, Olivier 08 1900 (has links)
The creation story of Genesis 1.1–2.4a – the introductory story of the Hebrew Bible – has never ceased to captivate and thus left a strong imprint on popular culture. Despite its millennial history and its multitude of commentaries, this story continues, even today, to spark discussions and debates on ever more specific and complex issues. The general objective of this dissertation is to examine a rarely explored dimension of this narrative, namely the traces of (divine) kingship found in its midst and the potential priestly reconfiguration of this royal dimension in the postexilic period. To do so, literary and historical methods, including narrative criticism and comparative history, will be used throughout the dissertation. First, I will investigate the characterization of king YHWH in various psalms (Ps 47; 74; 89; 104). The rest of the investigation will build on these first steps of the study. I will then proceed to excavate traces and remains of divine kingship in Genesis 1. The last two chapters will allow me, on the one hand, to address the historical context of this text, in the post-exilic period, as well as the important priestly influence on Gen 1; on the other, to identify the main elements of the "royal" characterization of Elohim in Gen 1 while highlighting and acknowledging their priestly revitalization when compared to the Psalms.

Semiotics as a medium to convey the philosophy and psychology of evil in the Xitsonga translation of Macbeth

Ndove, Mkhancane Daniel 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis publicly displays the veracity of witchcraft and superstitious fables, which, many people believe to be irrational in nature. In this analysis, semiotics has been paraded in various versions from chapter to chapter-in order to illustrate the miscellaneous interpretations. The backbone of the investigation focuses on the philosophy and psychology of evil, a theoretical belief that is laid down by practical paradigms at the edge of each chapter. The point of departure of this investigation emanates from the Shakespearean literary work, Macbeth, which is popularly known for its inclusion of the witches in its illustration of the Scottish kingship. Therefore this thesis has adopted the practices of the witches and from there came out with what is commonly practiced by the Vatsonga people. Scotland, England, Germany and France of the 15th and 16th centuries were the countries best known as the most uncouthed centres for witchcraft and superstitions. Therefore leading stories from these European countries have made this project feasible. The study has leaked many of the unfounded stories about witchcraft and superstitions that were thought of as extraordinarily great but made real in this work. It has gone as far as windswept the kingship rites, coronation, the powers of the divine bones upon the anointed king, ritual ceremonies, causes of prosperity and failure, tales about stars, ghosts, reptiles, zombies and those hideous deeds that are not socially acceptable such as digging up of children's graves, convulsions, calling for rain, punishment meted out for a witch, prevention of adultery, changing oneself to a crocodile, rat, snake and many more stories. / African Languages / D. Judah and her neighbours in the seventh century BCE

Asher, Adèle Hazel Esmè 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis investigates the period in Judah which took place precisely a century between the death ofHezekiah (687 BCE) and the final fall of Jerusalem (587 BCE) Seldom has a nation experienced so many dramatically sudden reversals of fortune in so relatively short a time. Throughout the first half of the seventh century BCE the Assyrian empire reigned supreme. In the second half, in rapid succession, Judah, as a vassal, experienced periods of independence and of subjection, first to Egypt, then to Babylonia, before finally destroying herself in a futile rebellion against the latter. The aim of the thesis was to set Judah in the global context and investigate the role she played. To this end the Great Powers, namely Assyria, Egypt and Babylonia were surveyed, as well as were the Small Powers, like Judah, Phoenicia and the Transjordanian states, and the relationships probed. The thesis traces the life of the wicked but extraordinarily successful King Manasseh, and his equally reprobate son, Amon, who was brutally murdered by his servants, and was avenged by 'the people of the land'. Josiah is the only monarch who fits the Deuteronomistic requirements of a good king. Religious and national reform generally go hand in hand with politics, and the cultic reform and centralization of the cult characterise his reign. · With the fall of Assyria, the temporary surge into prominence by Egypt and the tragic death of Josiah in 609 BCE, Judah experienced radical political fluctuations and with them alternate subjugation by, and rebellion against, each of the major powers. Inexperienced leadership and a situation of dual kings, followed Josiah's death. The rapidly changing international scene demanded of the rulers of Judah skillful manoeuvring and exceptional adaptability, and frequently confronted them with ominous political situations. Judaean leaders and the puppet King Zedekiah, propped up by false prophets, failed to grasp the shift in the balance of power, and clung to questionable Egyptian aid against the new world power, Babylonia. Highly vulnerable and left in the lurch, Jerusalem faced protracted siege and famine in Jerusalem, destruction ofthe Temple, and deportation ofthe cream ofher people. / Classics and Modern European Languages / D. Le constitutionnalisme thaïlandais à la lumière de ses emprunts étrangers : une étude de la fonction royale / Thai constitutionalism and legal borrowings : a study of kingship

Mérieau, Eugénie 03 May 2017 (has links)
Based on the study of the evolution of Thai constitutional law and its underlying doctrines from its very origins onwards, this dissertation identifies the core principle of the Thai polity as being royal sovereignty. It was built on material and doctrinal constitutional borrowings, that have, through successive sedimentation, created a specifically Thai doctrine of royal power making the King the supreme constituant power, the interpret of dharma and custom, to which positive law is subordinate. In Europe « medieval constitutionalism » took from the King the power to modify the fundamental laws of the realm, modern constitutionalism tended to take his « Majesty» away, and finally, « new constitutionalism » transferred his role as guardian of the constitution to the judicial power or a constitutional court. In Siam and later in Thailand, the monarchy used Western constitutional ideas and mechanisms to institutionalize and transform while at the same time maintaining the doctrine of royal sovereignty and its effective practice. As a result, constitutional instability has neutralized the development of parliamentarism necessary to make the Thai political regime converge towards its official British constitutional model. This finding opens the question of the transferability of the Bristish constitutional conventions unwritten rules at the heart of British parliamentary system, as they are but a crystallization of legal constraints proper to a specific constitutional history.

Pyramidový komplex Djedkarea Isesiho v jižní Sakkáře a jeho výzdobný program / The Pyramid Complex of Djedkare-Isesi at South Saqqara and Its Decorative Program

Megahed, Mohamed Abdel Moneim January 2016 (has links)
1 The Pyramid Complex of Djedkare-Isesi at South Saqqara and its Decorative Program Mohamed Megahed Abstract The present thesis aims to publish pyramid complex of King Djedkare and its decorative program for the first time. The rule of King Djedkare was very significant and many important changes happened in the Egyptian state during his time. He is known to have reorganized the royal mortuary cults of his predecessors in Abusir; the remains of the papyrus archives discovered in three mortuary temples in Abusir are to a great extent related to this reorganization, as most of the preserved papyrus fragments come from the time of this king. Besides the other available evidence from his reign, numerous finds were discovered in the king's pyramid complex, which have, however, not been published until now. These include fragments of relief decoration and the present study thus can help us better understand and interpret the development of royal relief at the end of the Fifth Dynasty. The thesis is divided into five chapters, the first chapter provides a guideline to the thesis and its catalogue, and presents an up to date state of research on the decoration of the royal mortuary complexes of the Old Kingdom. Another section in this chapter is devoted to the methods that the author followed during his...
