O presente trabalho procura entender como Anthony Ashley Cooper (o Terceiro Conde de Shaftesbury) concebeu a noção de caráter moderno a partir da análise de alguns elementos de sua filosofia, a saber: a relação entre o gênero humano e a natureza, a formação da identidade individual e a de uma época, o vínculo entre a questão da escritura e a atividade filosófica. Cada um dos três capítulos de nosso estudo foi dedicado (respectivamente) a um desses assuntos. Tendo como base Os moralistas, a Investigação sobre a virtude e a Carta sobre o entusiasmo, o primeiro capítulo busca examinar o vínculo que Shaftesbury estabelece entre o homem e o sistema da natureza, ou seja: como o gênero humano se relaciona com o universo e qual é o seu papel no interior do mundo natural. A partir da idéia shaftesburiana de solilóquio (exposta no texto que leva o mesmo nome: Solilóquio ou conselho a um autor), o segundo capítulo procura compreender como o filósofo inglês pensa o liame entre o que ele mesmo denomina processo de personificação e o surgimento das artes, da filosofia e da identidade de uma época. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo visa mostrar que a questão da polidez e do aprimoramento do gosto não apenas foi um dos principais temas da obra do filósofo inglês, como também está intimamente ligada à sua concepção de filosofia. / The object of this thesis is the philosophy of Anthony Ashley Cooper, third earl of Shaftesbury, and more specifically the conception it presents of a modern character. Shaftesbury\'s understanding of modernity in philosophical terms is present in at least three of the main themes of his philosophy: the relation between mankind and nature, the formation of the individual character as a component of the character of the times, the bounds that tie philosophical reflection to the art of writing. The first chapter of the thesis examines Shaftesbury understanding of man\'s role in the natural world, or the relations between mankind as a species and nature as a system. The focus is on The moralists, a philosophical rhapsody, An inquiry concerning virtue or merit and A letter of enthusiasm. The second chapter deals with the text of Soliloquy, or advice to an author, in order to show how Shaftesbury conceives the process of personification as the precondition for the rising of the arts (including philosophy) which in turn are taken as the defining element of the character of the times. The third chapter shows that politeness and the refinement of taste, far from being mere motifs of fashion, are understood by Shaftesbury as philosophical topics of major importance. The focus here is on the texts of the Miscellaneous reflections and of Plastics.

Este trabalho tem por propósito analisar os textos de Max Stirner - em particular a primeira parte de seu livro intitulado O Único e a sua Propriedade -, assumindo a perspectiva de que neles é elaborado um diagnóstico de como a subjetividade moderna, no processo de sua constituição, forma-se comprometida com a dominação. Para isso, é preciso refazer com o filósofo o caminho dialético do eu, da Antiguidade até a sua manifestação moderna, identificando nesse percurso as razões que o fizeram alienar-se de si, sem se esquecer do papel da arte e da religião na criação, no rejuvenescimento e na manutenção da alienação. Além disso, encontrará também tratamento neste trabalho a forma de racionalidade, de moral e de educação modernas, elementos importantes da subjetividade, uma vez que esses elementos perfazem com ela um todo sistemático onde o que só encontra espaço são as exigências do \"espírito\", e isso em detrimento do que quer que seja da ordem da individualidade. Portanto, para uma abordagem apropriada desse tema, requer-se a compreensão do processo de formação da Modernidade e da sua subjetividade correlata, identificando a maneira pela qual, nesse processo, a dominação inscreve-se de forma imanente no eu. Isso significa dizer que, na interpretação que aqui se oferece da filosofia stirneriana, o processo de formação da subjetividade moderna e a dominação não são fenômenos independentes, mas sim resultantes de um e mesmo processo de engendramento da Modernidade. / This paper intends to examine the texts of Max Stirner - specially those related to the first part of his major work, The Ego and its Own - by assuming the perspective that through these texts, the author articulates a diagnosis of how the modern subjectivity, in the process of its constitution, forms itself compromised with domination. For this, we will need to remake with the philosopher the dialectical path of the self, from Antiquity to its modern manifestation, identifying in this way the reasons that made this ego to alienate from itself - without obliterating the role of art and religion in the creation, rejuvenation and maintenance of this alienation. Moreover, it will also be found in this paper a discussion about the forms of modern rationality, moral and education - important elements of the subjectivity, that compose with it a systematic whole where nothing but the claims of the \"spirit\" find place, in despite of everything that originates from individuality. Therefore, for an appropriate approach of these questions, one must comprehend the constitution of Modernity and its correlated subjectivity, identifying the way by which, within this process, domination engraves itself immanently in the self. In other words, this means that in the interpretation we are offering of Stirner\'s philosophy, the process of constitution of modern subjectivity and the domination are not independent phenomena, but rather are both resultants of one and the same process of engendering of Modernity.

Tem como objetivo concluir que Noel Rosa, indivíduo de classe média que interagia com os elementos populares e as classes mais baixas do Rio de Janeiro, representa, com suas canções, a interação entre o morro e a cidade, entre o tradicional e o moderno, contribuindo, assim, para caracterização e compreensão da formação da identidade brasileira no período em estudo. Assim, a partir da análise de suas letras, e da própria condição social de Noel Rosa, observamos que elas apresentam elementos, muitas vezes antagônicos, que representam as mudanças socioculturais pelas quais passava o Brasil naquele momento. Em sua obra estão presentes a ideologia da malandragem, característica dos anos 20, e a valorização do trabalho incentivada pelo governo pós-30, além de críticas ao progresso e à / The present paper is a study of the body of work of the composer Noel Rosa (1910-1937) and how it relates to the social, political, economic and cultural transformations which took place in Brazil between the 20’s and the 30’s of the 20th. Century. This paper aims at concluding that Noel Rosa, a middle class citizen who interacted with popular elements and lower social classes of Rio de Janeiro, represents, through his songs, the interaction between the slums and the city, between traditional and modern, contributing, therefore, to the characterization and understanding of the formation of the Brazilian identity during the mentioned period. Hence, by analyzing Noel Rosa’s lyrics and his social condition, it can be observed that they display elements, often counteractant, which represent the socio-cultural changes Brazil was going through during that period. English is a global language which is associated with modernity and in advertising, English is used to associate products with modernity in the minds of the consumers. In non-English speaking countries, modernity-related products are more often advertised in English than products unrelated to modernity. Despite this, no previous research has proven that consumers’ purchase intention is higher for modernity-related products advertised in English compared to the same product advertised in the native language. Through an online-survey with a between-subject design a quantitative field experiment was conducted. It was found that consumers had a higher purchase intention for modernity-related products advertised in English compared to the same products advertised in Swedish and that consumers’ purchase intention was higher for products unrelated to modernity advertised in Swedish compared to the same products advertised in English.

The first chapter is dedicated to A Philosophy of Boredom (1999), Lars Svendsen book, which will enable us to differentiate diverse kinds of apathies which occurred along mankind history, by philosophy and literature. The second chapter is destined to verse about some writings which the philosopher Walter Benjamin destined to Charles Baudelaire, notedly the essay On Some Motives in Baudelaire (1939) and some fragments of his survey Paris of the Second Empire (1938). In the third chapter, we will dedicate to the part of the Essays in contemporary psychology (1883), Paul Bourget book, destined to analyse Charles Baudelaire and to insert him in what the literary critic calls nihilism, pessimism. In the fourth chapter we will examine tedium in Baudelaire from the perspective by an Erich Auerbach article and, also, the Jean Starobinski reflections concerning the figure of the melancholic. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo pensar o cinema de George Méliès, na virada do século XIX para o século XX, como um prisma através do qual refratam-se espectros da modernidade, ou seja, elementos recorrentes em seus filmes que desdobravam questões caras àquele período, e que se ressignificam de diferentes maneiras à luz da chamada pós-modernidade. / The present research aims to think George Méliès' films, at the turn of the nineteenth century for the twentieth century, as a prism through which refracted specters of modernity, that is, recurring elements in his films, each one unfolding differente meanings about that period, and each one of them ressignfying themselves in different ways in the light of the so-called postmodernity.

Esta dissertação inicia-se com uma pesquisa sobre o conceito de modernidade, e suas denominações: Modernidade/Pós-modernidade; a seguir, recorremos à Arte Moderna, para depois adentrarmos a Estética literária no projeto da modernidade, foco da pesquisa e, para tanto, apresentamos valores literários de alguns escritores-críticos modernos. Assim, expostas as idéias em diálogo na modernidade, procedemos a formatação de um paradigma a que chamamos de paradigma Projeto da Modernidade. Discorremos sobre a crítica literária atual, e as autoras pesquisadas: a portuguesa Alice Vieira e a brasileira Lygia Bojunga Nunes. Selecionamos e realizamos um estudo paradigmático analíticocrítico em duas obras literárias para crianças e jovens, a saber: Flor de Mel de Alice Vieira e Corda bamba de Lygia Bojunga Nunes. Fizemos uma aproximação do paradigma PM formatado para este estudo ao final de cada análise, assim como uma aproximação entre Flor de Mel e Corda bamba. Dessa forma, pudemos constatar o quanto a qualidade estética do texto narrativo; desconsiderando se a obra pode ser endereçada ao receptor adulto ou criança, ou seja, se é chamada de literatura para crianças e jovens, ou não; comprova a estética literária da modernidade a que nos propusemos investigar neste estudo. / This thesis starts by researching the concept of Modernity and its denominations. Modernity/Post-modernity; then, we approach Modern Art, and, later, we enter the literary esthetics in the project of Modernity, which is the focus of the research and, for that purpose, we present literary values of some modern critic-writers. So, once the ideas in Modernity dialog have been exposed, we proceed to the formatting of a paradigm which we call Project of Modernity Paradigm. We go about the current literary criticism, and the researched writers: Portuguese Alice Vieira and Brazilian Lygia Bojunga Nunes. We selected and performed an analytical-critical paradigm study in two literary works for children and youngsters, namely: Flor de Mel, by Alice Vieira and Corda bamba, by Lygia Bojunga Nunes. We did an approximation of the PM paradigm, for this study, in the end of each analysis, as well as an approximation between Flor de Mel and Corda bamba, so that we could find how much the esthetic quality of the narrative text, disregarding whether the work can be addressed to the adult or children receptors, in other words, if the literature mentioned is for children and youngsters, or not, does evidence the literary esthetics of Modernity which we proposed to investigate in this study.

A partir dos romances Memorial do Convento, Ensaio sobre a Cegueira e Todos os Nomes, este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a questão da identidade do homem português, do homem como ser social e do ser humano como indivíduo que busca conhecer a si próprio enquanto perde-se na rotina da vida contemporânea. Para tanto, analisaremos os romances seguindo a ordem de suas publicações. A análise do primeiro romance Memorial do Convento, será pautada pela teoria semiótica do texto, considerando o percurso gerativo de sentido e, especialmente os níveis fundamental e narrativo. Também pretendemos mostrar como o narrador reconstrói a história de Portugal elegendo a ficção como o verdadeiro fato histórico ao desconstruir a História oficial. Também servirão como norte teórico Mikhail Bakhtin e sua tipologia do discurso e o sociólogo Stuart Hall com a identidade cultural na pós-modernidade. Iniciaremos o estudo com uma singela visão panorâmica dos pressupostos teóricos, seguida da análise da construção e descentralização do sujeito nos romances saramaguianos. / From novels Memorial do Convento, Ensaio sobre a Cegueira and Todos os Nomes , this paper aims to examine the question of the identity of the portuguese man, of man as being social and human being as an individual who seeks to know oneself as lost in the routine of contemporary life. For both, review the novels according to their order of publications. The analysis of the first novel Memorial do Convento, will be guided by the theory of semiotics text, considering the percusro gerativo de sentido and especially the critical levels and narrative, we want to show how the narrator reconstructs an episode in the history of Portugal through the deconstruction of official History. Also serve as north theoretical Mikhail Bakhtin and their typology of speech and the sociologist Stuart Hall with the cultural identity in post-modernity. We will begin to study with a single overview of the theoretical assumptions, followed by construction and analysis of decentralization of the subject in the Saramagossnovels.

This dissertation analyses the visual representations of the Lower Thames in the years between about 1880 and 1901 to understand the ways in which they reconstructed and projected modern life in London in and through visual forms. Focusing on works which were accessible in the broad middle-class sphere through exhibitions and publications, it sets out to show how non-modernist works of art articulated capitalist modernity in powerful terms. In translating a working port into representations such as exhibition pictures and newspaper illustrations, artists exploited the naturalist aesthetic. They highlighted the dirty, modern, chaotic and even dangerous river, while playing with the distance between that depicted working-class site and the middle-class audience of their work. Examining their subject and means of representation, the dissertation shows how the late Victorian representations of the Port of London illuminated the values of technology, labour, capital and the Empire.

nÃo hà / A narrativa, como tipo textual, tem sido praticada por escritores literÃrios hà muito tempo. O gÃnero conto, especificamente, encontrou preferÃncia em muitos deles, inclusive na Modernidade, e a teoria literÃria nÃo o deixou de fora de seus estudos. Entre os procedimentos narrativos estudados pela teoria, encontra-se a epifania, cuja concepÃÃo à a do escritor irlandÃs James Joyce, a qual se distancia da acepÃÃo original â da religiÃo â e se direciona para o Ãmbito literÃrio. O objetivo desta pesquisa à proporcionar uma perspectiva crÃtica sobre a relaÃÃo entre a brevidade tanto do gÃnero conto quanto dessa concepÃÃo de epifania. A partir do levantamento bibliogrÃfico da teoria literÃria, centrado em tÃtulos que apresentam alguma aproximaÃÃo com a temÃtica e com o conceito joyceano, esta pesquisa concentra-se em torno da especulaÃÃo sobre a presenÃa de procedimentos epifÃnicos em contos modernos e contemporÃneos. A concisÃo do conto comportaria adequadamente a fugacidade da epifania? Essa confluÃncia de brevidades revelaria, entÃo, como a epifania pode estar contida em um conto? Para buscar tais respostas, buscou-se uma delimitaÃÃo dos conceitos de conto e de epifania, a partir de teÃricos da Literatura, e, em seguida, uma anÃlise comparativa de trÃs contos escritos no sÃculo XX que apresentam epifania em seus enredos, a saber: "Amor", de Clarice Lispector; "Olhar", de Rubem Fonseca; e "Axolotle", de Julio CortÃzar. / The narrative, as a type of text, has been practiced by literary writers for a long time. The short story genre, specifically, was preferred by many of them, even in Modernity, and literary theory has not left it out. Among the narrative procedures considered by the theory, there is the epiphany, as was conceptualized by Irish wirter James Joyce, dissociating itself from the original religious sense, and aiming at the scope of literary studies. The goal of this research is to provide a critical perception on the relation between the brevity of the short story genre and of this epiphany concept. From the bibliographic survey of literary theory, centered on titles which present certain approximation to the theme and to the joycean concept, this reasearch focus on the speculation on the presence of epiphanic procedures in modern and contemporary short stories. The hypothesis raised is that a correlation exists between the short story and epiphany, for the concision of the genre would properly contain the fugacity of the procedure. Therefore, the confluence of these brevities would reveal how the epiphany can be enclosed in a short story. To that end, this paper sought a delimitation of the concepts of short story and epiphany from Literature thinkers followed by a comparative analysis of three short stories namely: "Amor", by Clarice Lispector; "Olhar", by Rubem Fonseca; and "Axolotle", by Julio CortÃzar.
