Journeys into the garden of sexuality : the voices of women's sexuality in pastoral conversations

Spies, Nicoline 30 November 2005 (has links)
Tills research project arose from an awareness that many Christian women experience female sexual desire and the expression of sexual pleasure within a religious context to be a forbidden subject and that they are consequently isolated in silence. The social construction of sexuality within the history of Christianity was briefly explored to see which discourses underpin current constructions of White Christian female sexuality. Tills feminist, participatory action research project challenged the silence on women's sexuality by inviting three women to narrate their personal stories of sexuality. With the help of narrative therapeutic practices, some of the dominant social and religious discourses that constitute White Christian female sexuality were challenged and explored. This research project aimed at the co-construction of narratives of sexuality that will hopefully be life-giving to Christian women's experiences with sexuality. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M.Th.

Seegers, Jacobus Johannes 30 June 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this research journey is twofold: 1. To deconstruct the Christ-church metaphor in Ephesians 5:21-33 in pastoral marital therapy. To find a more ethical interpretation of this metaphor which can be used as an aid in marital therapy in order to deconstruct patriarchal stereotypes in marriage. 2. To discover the possible value of such an interpretation for marital therapy as well as to describe the journey with a couple who helped to determine the process by which this interpretation could be used as and aid to deconstruct patriarchal discourses in marriage. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / (M.Th.

Zeelie, Hester Sophia Jacoba 02 1900 (has links)
This study addresses the limited and one-sided reporting about women and female beauty in the Hebrew Bible and other ancient literary sources, as well as the subservient position the women experience in the patriarchal Old Testament society. An archaeological approach is followed, although literary sources are also used. Attention is given to women’s position with reference to governmental, legal, religious and domestic issues, their course of life and the reasons why a beautiful and attractive appearance was important. The research focuses mainly on the women of ancient Israel and Egypt – for the purpose of comparison. Information on women of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean world is also taken into account. Women’s cosmetics, perfumes, jewelry and clothing are discussed – as well as the influence of women’s beauty practices on the economy and trade of ancient times. The final chapter makes certain deductions and some aspects are recommended for further study. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M. A. (Biblical Archaeology)

No. of bitstreams: 1 4325.pdf: 1500225 bytes, checksum: 64be71b0ec4469671c2d55e8c76a847d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-06 / The Women's Police Stations were created to combat and prevent violence against women, enabling act in time to prevent the occurrence or worsening damage to individuals development. However, some observational studies, as well as research conducted with violence women victims, show that the police attendance is unsatisfactory, pronounced by patriarchal customs, which contributes to women do not give continuity to the complaint of a crime committed against them, keeping the violence perpetuation. Therefore, it is socially and scientifically relevant to study surrounds` reality of the civil police and the challenges faced by it. This study aimed to elicit and characterize police officers´ beliefs on violence against women and their conceptions of such violence and the attendance to violence victims. The study included 20 police officers from a medium-sized city in the interior of Brazil. The following instruments were used for data collection: a) Questionnaire on beliefs about domestic violence and b) Questionnaire on the conceptions of police officer about violence against women and the attendance to violence victims. The instruments were applied at two different times. Through instruments were made qualitative and quantitative analysis. The quantitative analysis was obtained with descriptive methods. Qualitative analysis was obtained through defined categories. The outcomes showed that the majority of responses police to the statements of the first questionnaire pointed to a low percentage of inappropriate responses, however, the police officers who participated in the survey had specific beliefs about violence against women with high rates of inadequacy, including blaming the victim for staying in abusive relationship, misconceptions about the effects of violence on child development, blaming the victim for the violence. Although, participants had adequate view with respect to some beliefs, such as: conceptions about women deserve to be beaten and physical abuse to be more threatening than psychological abuse. The beliefs in which police officers had higher rate of inadequate responses can directly affect the attendance to violence women victims. The outcomes also showed domestic violence is most often seen by participants as physical aggression, although the participants demonstrated a good knowledge about the different practices of violence. Additionally, the policemen pointed out some challenges for them to meet the victims of violence, such as lack of training, staff shortages and weakened emotional state of employees who can produce an insufficient treatment. The concluding remarkes points to the need for better training for professionals regarding the issues of violence against women, as well as the development, implementation and evaluation of training courses for such professionals, aiming to fill this gap in their formation.

Patriarchy and Masculinity in Doris Lessing's The Fifth Child and in Ben in the World

Sundberg, Björn January 2011 (has links)
The English novelist, Doris Lessing elucidates the rigidity of a society, which is based upon patriarchy, in her novels, The Fifth Child and Ben in the World. This essay illustrates the causes and the effects of a patriarchal system in the light of feminist ideology supported by Freud’s theories about the acquisition of gender roles. The analysis in this essay of patriarchy and masculinity shows that the novels’ societies as a whole, as well as their criminal subcultures are upheld by people who hold prejudice against others, who do not fit in society’s normal structures, believe in authoritarian social systems and prefer rational solutions to decisions for reasons of conscience. Lessing depicts the complexity of the social relations between characters of different social classes and their relations to society’s institutions. Her unprejudiced penetration into the minds of society’s marginalized people and into the minds of those who represent the oppressive established society illuminates different sides of patriarchy. Lessing gives us to understand that it is extremely difficult, from a moral point of view, to distinguish the established society from its criminal subcultures or society’s oppressors from its victims. Society’s accepted gender roles in the patriarchal system are often ironically described in these novels, certainly with the aim of making us question normative manners, habits and attitudes.

Female identity and race in contemporary Afrofuturist narratives : "Wild seed" by Octavia E. Butler

Boccara, Ella 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the notions of race and female identity through Octavia Butler’s Afrofuturist narrative Wild Seed. Described as a new genre of ‘speculative fiction’ by scholars, Afrofuturism converges speculative and realist modes in order to explore conjunctions between African diasporas, African American writing, and modern technologies. This thesis provides a theoretical and critical analysis of Octavia Butler’s Wild Seed, with a particular focus on its various concepts and historical allegories. The novel Wild Seed addresses such topics as post-colonialization, intimate tyranny, hybridity, difference, otherness, and identity, questioning and foregrounding the role race and identity plays in science fiction. In the first Chapter, I will specifically examine the influence of dominant patriarchal Western colonization and its Westernization of African Americans. Then I will analyze the contradictions within the black struggle for freedom, race, and racialized embodiment through the themes of the intergenerational trauma of slavery and the objectification of black bodies found in the text. The second chapter will explore the different forms of resistance dramatized through Anyanwu’s character, as well as the use of space and temporality as a process to understand and connect the issues of embodiment and gender identity: Anyanwu has to resist, redefine, and reclaim her identity in order to survive the domination and power of Doro’s future patriarchal and biogenetically altered society.

Rape in Revolutionary America, 1760-1815

Snidal, Michelle 30 August 2021 (has links)
Rape had an indelible effect on the American Revolutionary era. Using trial testimonies and depositions, newspapers, and literary sources, this thesis argues that there was a level of continuity between peacetime and wartime rape characterized by the assaulters’ modus operandi and rape’s ideological exploitation. Eighteenth-century Anglo-American society dictated that rape, or “carnal knowledge of a woman forcibly against her will,” was only a crime against virtuous white women. The gendered and racialized ways pre-revolutionary society identified and prosecuted rape influenced how rapists conducted their assaults. Women had to prove their sexual morality, that penile penetration and male ejaculation occurred, and that they sought help immediately after the assault to prosecute their attackers. During the war, rape became an important metaphor. Wartime publishers and propagandists used reports and victim testimonies as evidence of British immorality and to justify political independence. The rape of America subsumed individual atrocities. The nationalization of women’s sexual virtue continued into the new Republic. Artists and writers memorialized the Revolution through explicitly sexualized narratives and sentimental novels that emphasized female sexual morality. Women’s sexual virtue was linked with the stability of the Republic. This thesis utilizes a diverse historiography to highlight the intersectional correlations between rape and eighteenth-century patriarchal power in America. / Graduate / 2022-08-26

Ali, Shadan January 2020 (has links)
The essay is a qualitative study based on interviews with school curators and a student coach who in various ways in their work come into contact with girls who live in an honor culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Swedish school treats girls who in one way or another live in an honor culture and how the schools work with honor issues. The research question that has formed the basis of the study was the following: How does the Swedish school respond to honor culture? The results are analyzed based on the previously presented research, Al-Baldawi's theory of the individual-centered and group-centered way of thinking, and Hylland-Eriksen's theory of the creation of a “we” and “they”. The results show that honor culture occurs within the Swedish school and is given more attention, partly because professionals have more knowledge and experience on the subject but also because the interest has increased from different quarters to investigate the phenomenon. However, all respondents agree that more and different kinds of efforts are still needed to give the girls support and help, but above all to work for prevention.
