Déplaire à son public pour un auteur du XVIIIe siècle : le cas de Rousseau / When authors decide to displease their audience : Rousseau in his century

Hammann, Christine 26 June 2009 (has links)
To displease: this is not a concept, neither a matter of research, but rather a claim--the claim of several writers and artists from the French 18th century, who where reluctant to meet their public’s expectations. The accession of public opinion, whose authority is contested, confirms their desire for autonomy. Among the most eloquent of them is Rousseau. After his Discourse about the origins of inequality among men [1751] inspired his own personal “reformation”, the Genevan citizen unexpectedly proclaims the need to be rid of the long-standing “art to please,” which, up until this point, had ordered social and literary life since the 17th century. However, he is quickly confronted by the dangers of autonomy and a quest for independence that could easily be mistaken as a deceptive form of seduction. In light of this, at the end of the 1750’s, Rousseau decides to renounce his stance as an insolent, forbidding author, and he re-establishes the aim to please, although this time in a different way. The language that is characteristic of the seductive style this author inaugurates is found in his novel La Nouvelle Heloise. But is the novelist able to trump his position, stated in the Lettre à d’Alembert, where he attacks literary pleasure? He would say so; but ironically, it is Rousseau’very own means of seduction that the is attacking when he suggests, indiscreetly, through the lines of his work, that he has been poisoning the public mind.

Henri-Pierre Roché : Á la recherche de I' unité perdue

Du Toit, Madeleine Catherine Kepler 14 April 2009 (has links)
The life of Henri-Pierre Roché (1879 – 1959), art collector, journalist, writer, finds its singular rhythm in a continual meandering between dispersion and the search for unifying harmony. This dispersion – moral and physical – appears to represent a necessary evil for him since he considers his vocation to be the gathering of human experiences from as wide a spectrum as possible in order to create a work that would be useful to society, that would lead to better understanding of issues such as political harmony, eroticism and polygamy. The dissertation consists of a detailed biographical study which covers Roché’s formative years until the publication of his first literary works (1879 – 1907). A biographical summary of the remainder of his life is followed by a chapter on his first major publication, Don Juan et... , which has not formed the subject of any literary analysis prior to this. The third chapter consists of an interpretation of Roché’s novel Deux Anglaises et le Continent as both a work of initiation and an initiation to his work, illustrating how it introduces themes that recur in two further novels, Jules et Jim and Victor. Through his way of life, Roché’s life becomes his most extensive and involved œuvre. This dissertation traces the roots of his propensity for dispersion and lack of unity, to his childhood and specifically to the form of education advocated by his mother Clara Roché. This attribute surfaces again in Roché’s keeping of a personal diary, spanning almost sixty years, in which he compulsively observes and notes his own behaviour and that of those around him. The diary emphasises and prepares the fragmentary, compressed style and open-ended writing which would later become Roché’s trademark. Abandoning his studies in political science, Roché sets out on a career which has much in common with the lives dilettante intellectuals fashion for themselves towards the end of the 19th century. His first human project, formulated around 1902, is an attempt to understand the mystery of erotic love and the possibilities of sexual relationships. To this end, he transforms his own life into a kind of laboratory. At a time when France has hostile inclinations towards Britain and Germany, Roché undertakes extensive journeys to these countries, learning the languages and opening himself to literary, social and philosophical influences. The dissertation pays particular attention to the analysis of these influences, an area which has not yet been covered by any other research. Through a detailed interpretation of Don Juan et..., the nature of seduction and desire is examined in the context of the literary myth of Don Juan and the association between fragmentation and desire is emphasised. In conclusion, the association between desire and its written expression is examined and found to be reflected in Roché’s fragmentary writing, through which he appears to find a solution/ compromise in the form of voluntary incompleteness compensating for his failure in the impossible quest for unity. / Thesis (DLitt)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Modern European Languages / unrestricted

Kvinnofrid : Synen på våldtäkt och konstruktionen av kön i Sverige 1600-1800 / Conceptualizing Rape : Gendered notions of Violence and Sexuality in Sweden 1600–1800

Jansson, Karin Hassan January 2002 (has links)
The present dissertation deals with attitudes towards rape in early modern Sweden. The narratives from rape cases show certain similarities and differences, all of which provide a basis for a categorization. In somewhat generalized form, the documents identify a cast of six different-type characters: the unruly soldier, the despotic household head, the foul-minded hired hand, the honorable wife, the naive servant girl and the innocent under-aged girl. Reports by representatives of any one of these types, display a common view, judgmental elements often included. Views of rape between 1600 and 1800 were subject to changes of four kinds. One is, the woman is made an active subject, whose will and actions come under sharper focus in rape trials. A second type can be termed the sexualizing of the crime, where attack and assault aspects of a rape crime diminish, but purely sexual aspects increase, in importance. Amounting to a third change is growing interest in the remaining physical aspects of the rape crime. With this type as with the second type, brighter light falls on material and physical sides of the crime, while social matters and matters of honor became of less concern. A fourth change is that discussions of male authority run high at the outset of the period under study, but in time give way to talk of female qualities and morals. On the conceptual level the change can be interpreted as due to the shift which now linked violence and sexual practice directly to the individual and his/her morals, instead of as before to his/her social position in patriarchal society. On the immediate plane the actions of a single male individual were under review in a rape case, but on a larger scale the main issue was how much authority and power the male should have by virtue of the position he held. There was yet a scale where questions lurked concerning the legitimacy of the patriarchal system as a whole and of political power in any form.

Erôs and Education : Socratic Seduction in Three Platonic Dialogues

Dypedokk Johnsen, Hege January 2016 (has links)
Plato’s Socrates is famous for claiming that “I know one thing: That I know nothing” (see e.g. Ap. 21d and Meno 81d). There is one subject that Socrates repeatedly claims to have expertise in, however: ta erôtika (see e.g. Symp. 198d1). Socrates also refers to this expertise as his erôtikê technê (Phdr. 257a7–8), which may be translated as “erotic expertise”. In this dissertation, I investigate Socrates’ erotic expertise: what kind of expertise is it, what is it constituted by, where is it put into practice, and how is it practiced? I argue that the purposes this expertise serve are, to a significant extent, educational in nature. After first having clarified the dissertation’s topic and aim, as well as my methodological approach, I present an initial account of erôs and Socrates’ erotic expertise. While discussing what constitutes Socrates’ erotic expertise, I account for two erotic educational methods: midwifery and matchmaking. I further argue that these methods tend to be accompanied by two psychological techniques, namely charming and shaming. I argue that these methods and techniques are systematically applied by Socrates when he puts his erotic expertise into practice. In the dissertation, three dialogues where Socrates practices his erotic expertise are scrutinized: Lysis, Charmides, and Alcibiades I. I focus on Socrates’ encounters with the eponymous youths of the dialogues, and each dialogue is devoted a chapter of its own. I show how these dialogues are erotically charged, and also how Socrates in these dialogues demonstrates his erotic expertise. I argue that Socrates’ expertise on erôs plays an essential role in his attempts to engage the three youths in the processes of self-cultivation, learning, and the very practice of philosophy. In the final chapter of the dissertation I turn to some questions that arise in light of my readings, and summarize the results of my investigation.

[en] This study analyses the contributions of Sigmund Freud, Sándor Ferenczi and Jean Laplanche on seduction in psychoanalysis, focusing on their main characteristics and on the seducing agent in each theoretical perspective. Emphasizing the traumatic aspect of seduction, this study discusses the pathological and non- pathological effects of seduction, arguing that in Freud, seduction should be linked to the neurotica, to the discovery of hysterical women`s sexual fantasies as well as to the mother`s role as the first seductor of her baby; in Ferenczi, seduction should be linked to the theory of trauma; whereas, in Laplanche, it is connected with the general theory of seduction.

This research developed in the Professional Master in History aims to propose a reflection on the gender debate and violence in school history teaching. The proposition was made from the crime processes research, which identifies how the gender identities were represented in court proceedings relating to the crime of seduction between of 1940 to 1970 to reflect on the construction of gender stereotypes that influence the relationship between men and women still in the present day, relationships that are often marked by violence and permanency of the patriarchal culture. From the research, was produced a teaching material in book format to work with adolescents, which shows the process of knowledge construction history with the use of criminal prosecutions as a historical source and discussing gender representations expressed in speeches by criminal prosecutions. The sources used in the research are an integral part of the Legal Acquis that lies under the guard of the Centre for documentation and research in History, Department of History of the Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa - room of Judicial document. For data analysis was employed the qualitative method, through content analysis, anchored in the concept of genre (in the perspective of Joan Scott (1990), Heleieth Safiotti (2001), Guacira Lopes Louro (1995; 2008) and others) and the theory of social representations of Serge Moscovici (1978), considering that the goal is to analyze the representations about the male and female in lawsuits of sexual crimes. To understand women's participation and the different historical spaces and times, studying their experiences, trajectories, and transformations in behavioral patterns and the way of living sexuality are elements that need to be worked out in History classes.Knowing these trajectories may allow students to identify women as active historical subjects, their struggles for equal rights throughout history, and how stereotypes have been built over time on an ideal female profile. This subject needs to be deconstructed, since each subject is unique and its particularities must be respected, and it is not possible to impose a unique identity on all women.

The corpus is composed by four announcements of thirty seconds each, broadcasted on open television. All of them take hold of children s image or testimony, mascots and children s characters, aiming to create an identity and augment affectivity with the target, so that they can obtain positive results to the organizations behind the announcements. The films analysis has Peirce s semiotics as theoretical and methodological basis. For the confrontation of the topic of advertising and propaganda discourses on child audience, resources of Freud and Lacan s psychoanalysis are mobilized through the concepts of unconscious and of Other, as symbolic ideal and voice that legitimates the fundamentals of marketing functions, which are common in publicity, and the ideological ones, typical to propaganda. Both of them are present in such messages. From the analysis are pointed out the consequences that may happen on children s life such as wild consumption, premature sexualization, obesity, alcoholism, aggressiveness and familiar stress; as well as behavior changes.

Člověk proti pokušení: Mefistofelské svádění v českém dramatu 70. a 80. let 20.století / Resisting Temptation:Mephistophelian seduction in Czech Theatrical Drama of the 1970's and 1980's

Imlaufová, Markéta January 2019 (has links)
This master thesis deals with the topic of temptation in three Czech Theatrical Dramas of the 1970's and 1980's, inspired by the legend of Faust. These dramatic works represent different model approaches of dealing with such a topic. Thesis focuses on the principle of evil and its functioning. The temptation by Devil is therefore defined as Mephistophelian seduction, which occurs in drama plays selected as a subject of this thesis. The thesis analyzes and describes Mephistophelian seduction and its realization in theatrical dramas. Thesis elaborates the mechanism of evil principle and examines how the main protagonists are influenced in their acting and behaviour by this power. This thesis brings the power of evil into the wider context of "higher power" and describes relations between the power of evil and totalitarian power. On this base the historical and political context of the lives of the authors is considered as an important element. Based on comparison of all these aspects the principle of Mephistophelian seduction is reflected within its existential dimension.
