MODELOG : model-oriented development with executable logical object generation

de Souza Ramalho, Franklin January 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-06-12T15:54:14Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 2 arquivo6624_1.pdf: 2520643 bytes, checksum: b69b2ba2918606ef2803cf6322485425 (MD5) license.txt: 1748 bytes, checksum: 8a4605be74aa9ea9d79846c1fba20a33 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007 / The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has far outgrown its initial purpose as a standard visual notation for constructing intuitive, high-level blueprint models of object-oriented software. A series of extension, such as OCL, XMI, ASL, MOF, UML profiles, and different proposed formal semantics, to the language and to its application scope have fedoff each other in synergy. While these extensions constitute a sound starting point to make UML the pivotal element for the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) and Semantic Web (SW) visions, many other building blocks are still missing, including: (1) Complete formal semantics for UML and OCL; (2) UML inference engine based on such semantics to support model checking and intelligent agent reasoning with UML semantic web ontologies; (3) UML model compilers to fully automate both structural and behavioral code generation from detailed UML/OCL models. In this thesis, we present the MODELOG framework based on a single proposal to address these three issues: it consists of an automatic mapping from fully refined UML/OCL models to the object-oriented logic programs in the Flora-2, an executable and Turing-complete language with a well-defined formal semantics. We developed the MODELOG mapping as model transformations. As source for these transformations, we reused the UML2 and OCL2 metamodels provided by OMG and as target we developed a Flora metamodel. As we experimented and compared two language to implement the transformation: the dedicated transformation language ATL based on OCL, and Flora itself viewed as a model transformation language. As validating case study for MODELOG, we developed the Triangram robotic assembly puzzle. It is an example of planning tasks often executed by agents and it requires a complex class hierarchy together with complex structural and behavioral constraints. The Flora PSM of this puzzle was entirely automatically generated from its UML/OCL model by applying the MODELOG transformations. The main originality of this thesis is twofold. First, it simultaneously tackles various gaps in UML for its new extended role: formal specification language, MDE, semantic web services and agent engineering, Second, it does so without putting forward any new language but only by reusing a theoretically consolidated and efficiently implemented one. In contrast, previous proposals tend be limited to one or two such applications while often proposing new languages. The thesis makes contributions to various fields: For MDE, it shows the feasibility of completely automated full structural and behavioral executable code generation from a UML/OCL PIM, on a non-trivial, complex case study involving automated reasoning; For agile development, it reconcile that the robustness of formal methods with the early testing of fast prototyping, since MODELOG not only generates executable code, but also model checking code from UML/OCL models. For UML and OCL, it provides a fully integrated denotational formal semantics in Transaction Frame Logic on which Flora is based; For logic programming, it provides compositional metamodels of all the languages integrated in the Flora platform that clarify their relations and make them available as source or target language for a variety of MDE tasks such as model checking and fast prototyping; it also provides a way to develop logic programs using the consolidated full-life cycle object-oriented software engineering processes; For agent engineering, it shows how to get combine the complementary strengths of the object-oriented and logic paradigms, the two mostly widely reused in agent-oriented methods; For the semantic web service development, its introduced a highly automated MDE approach allowing to model them visually with UML-based industrial strengths method and CASE tools, and automatically generate their specification in the W3C standard SWSL, which is a XML-enabled variant of Flora

Customer Information in New Service Development : Case Study in the Swedish Gaming Industry

Mulkova, Karolina, Meyer, Melanie January 2017 (has links)
The power of digital technology serves developers of new services as an access funnel to the vast amount of customer behavioural information. The utilization of this information is forecasted to differentiate the winners from the losers in the market and benefit the new service development process. This study explores the phenomenon of customer information in new service development empirically by looking at the industry at the forefront, the gaming industry. By conducting three case studies with leading Swedish game developers, it challenges the previous research assumptions that acquired and disseminated customer information is implicitly used. This study has made significant contributions by investigating the broader context of customer information use and differentiating among three types of use. The findings show that behavioural information is used to backup own decisions or to enhance the developers understanding, but is not directly applied to the decision task. Despite the great potential, this advanced type of customer information is only used in the post-launch stages of new service development, for service iterations. To further validate the findings and explore information use in new service development more in-depth, future research generating contextual detailed realtime data is needed.

Co-creation, innovation and new service development : the case of the videogames industry

Czarnota, Jedrzej January 2016 (has links)
Co-creation is a new approach to the development of videogames, films, television, music and other creative services. It is a manifestation of open innovation paradigm where the firm collaborates with customers in new service development (NSD) activities. Firm can either co-create with individual customers, or with customer communities. Customers may substantially contribute to ideation, design, production, testing, marketing or distribution of a new or existing service. Customer networks, because of their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, contribute to the development of services. They have a potential to innovate, as their ideas come from the outside of the organization and reflect their need-related knowledge. Via co-creation a firm can also learn about unarticulated or future customer needs, and what kind of service features they would pay the most for. Co-creation has also benefits for marketing. By inviting customers to participate in their activities, firms can capitalize on positive word of mouth and increased value ascribed to their services. They can also engage in new models of raising finance, i.e. crowdfunding. We studied thirteen videogames firms in North America and in Western Europe. Our goal was to gain insight into their NSD activities when customers were also involved. We observed those studios’ co-creation practices, tracked their communications with customers, and spoke to employees in all levels and functions of those firms. We also participated in various related events. We identified three ideal types of co-creation practice: structured, semi-structured, and loose, and ordered the firms into three cases according to these types. We investigate the main factors that determine co-creation’s practice in firms, as well as firms’ ability co-create. This includes a firm’s propensity for and style of co-creation. We identify four relevant co-creation competences which, together with funding arrangements and organizational culture, influence co-creation. We find that co-creation can occur via formal, as well as informal channels. Informal co-creation takes place on the level of individual interactions between employees and customers (and is linked to hidden innovation), while formal relies on the strategic use of contests, volunteer programs, as well as other legally-regulated exchanges. Firms can use co-creation in NSD to source ideas from the customers, as well as to enhance their marketing by redefining customer relationship. Still, co-creation also has a profound transformative effect on the organization itself. We identify the sites within a firm that are affected by co-creation. Those sites go beyond just the content of the service, and include functions of the firm that normally are hidden from customers (back-end and service design functions). The new service development is also affected. Similarly, the way that firm interacts with its customers is transformed, too.

Future Logistical Services from Connected Vehicles : A Case Study at Scania CV AB

Aarflot, Markus, Jangstam, Pontus January 2017 (has links)
The road based transportation operations are growing rapidly, but the current infrastructure cannot sustain the entire growth. At the same time vehicle utilisation and fill rates are low. Improved efficiency of the operations is a necessary way forward for road based transportation. Parallel to this, heavy vehicle producers are currently improving the efficiency with services accompanying the product that are focused on the driver and the vehicle performance. However, the data from connected vehicles required for these services only entail a small amount of the operational data generated by connected vehicles. The case study aims to answer how to use connected vehicle operational data in order to suggest value adding services in a dynamic road distribution system. The applied methodology is an inductive study with an explanatory approach to map the current and future service offerings of the case company. This knowledge is combined with an exploratory approach with interviews of transport planners and theories of Lean and fleet management. Primarily, it is concluded that the perspective of operational data requires widening. Considering not only driver and vehicle operations but rather the entire transport operation of a company. It is also concluded that value creation with operational data is possible during three phases of fleet management. First, if knowledge about order data is accessible, the planning of transportations can be improved using route optimisation and operations research. Secondly, it is possible to create value during the execution phase, throughless manual supervision and communication by transport planners. Lastly, both the currently used operational data and further data usage can contribute to a better understanding of the performance of a fleet operation and facilitate for continuous improvements during an evaluation phase.

Suporte ao desenvolvimento e à composição de serviços web semânticos para a análise de expressão gênica / Support to the development and composition of semantic web services for gene expression analysis

Gabriela Der Agopian Guardia 12 August 2016 (has links)
O uso da plataforma SemanticSCo facilitou a definição destes cenários, permitindo assim a reprodução dos resultados obtidos a partir de diferentes estudos de expressão gênica previamente documentados na literatura / Gene expression studies usually involve the creation of integrated analysis processes for obtaining responses for a biological question. The creation of such processes often require the combined use of a number of software tools. However, the manual integration of tools can be cumbersome and error prone due to the increasing number of tools and data formats available in the domain. In order to automate the integration process, some approaches have been proposed for the adaptation of existing analysis tools as semantic web services as well as for the development of software environments to support the integration (composition) of semantic web services. Although these approaches present advances, to the best of our knowledge, no suitable solution has been proposed for the development and composition of web services in the functional genomics domain. In this context, this project aimed at investigating a complete solution for the development and composition of semantic web services to support gene expression analysis. As part of the proposed solution, we have defined an integrated methodology for the implementation of semantic web services created from existing software tools and the semantic annotation of such services. Our methodology provides concrete guidelines for the systematic development of services, also taking into account the main technical aspects associated with the development process. This methodology has been applied in the development of a representative set of services that support the main analysis activities performed on different types of gene expression data. Complementary to our methodology, we have defined a complete solution for the semantic composition of web services in the gene expression analysis domain. The proposed solution has been implemented in a software platform to support the semi-automatic composition of semantic web services, named SemanticSCo. This platform provides flexible support to all activities involved in the service composition process including service creation, publication, request, discovery, selection, composition and execution. Additionally, the SemanticSCo platform has been designed to support different types of users, including biologists and bioinformaticians. In this sense, the platform provides users with a high level of abstraction in the definition of their analysis processes, thus allowing them to focus more on biological research issues rather than on underlying details of the composition process. In addition, the SemanticSCo platform supports not only the definition and incorporation of (simple) services defined in terms of a single operation, but also (complex) services defined in terms of a set of conditions that constrain the order in which service operations should be invoked. Finally, in order to evaluate the developed support platform, we have defined a number of composition scenarios for the (integrated) analysis of gene expression data. The use of the SemanticSCo platform has facilitated the definition of these scenarios, thus allowing the reproduction of the results obtained from different gene expression studies previously documented in the literature.

Gröna informationssystem och Agenda 2030 : En kvalitativ studie hur kravhantering påverkar logistiksystems miljöeffekter / Green information systems and Agenda 2030 : A qualitative study of how requirements management affects the environmental effects of logistics systems

Engström, Frida, Wahlqvist, Philip January 2021 (has links)
Working more environmentally friendly and sustainable is becoming more important for a lot of organizations. Both in the logistics and IT industry. Green information systems have been acknowledged for their positive effects. Though when examined it is often not from an environmental view, effects on the environment, but instead on organizational effects from the implementation of the information systems. It has also been identified that most errors in the development of information systems occur through the requirements management process. The problem is addressed through examining the possibility of reaching the environmental goals in Agenda 2030 by the effects of green information systems in the logistics industry. The requirements management process was also studied to examine the impact of possible positive environmental effects by the information systems. To be able to answer the purpose of the research questions, a qualitative study was conducted with interviews with three IT service providers. All with genuine sustainability work and customers in the logistics industry. The literature in the thesis was the basis for the interview guide and was used in the semi-structured interviews. The interview guide is built upon seven categories. These categories are green IS solutions, environmental aspects, organizational impact, challenges, rules of conduct, requirements management and working methods. After analysis of the transcribed interviews, another category relevant for the purpose of the study was identified, work environment & sustainability work. These categories have been important for the development of two models that explain the categories' impact at the development of information systems that generate positive effects on the environment.

Stimulating Innovation in New Service Development : User-Involvement in Small and Medium-Sized Web-Based Platform Service Companies

Sada, Abubakar, Wadeisa, Darein January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, we present a review of the current practices of user involvement. Different methods and tools have proliferated for user-involvement, however, to comprehend the explicit features of a small and medium-sized web-based platform service companies, we contrast our findings with previous experiences and research of user involvement in big companies. In the basis of the aforementioned, we identify methods and contexts that may be appropriate in the context of small and medium-sized web-based platform service companies. Mainly, we reviewed the research field of: user-involvement and new service development.   The central purpose of this study is to determine how do small and medium-sized web-based platform service companies utilize the process of the user involvement across the stages of new service development. Building on previous researches, we suggested that there are different methods to consider under the service development stage (i.e. ideation, development and testing). These methods are grouped under the following terms user-involvement ecosystem, user-involvement interactions, user-involvement platform and user-involvement personnel. The aforementioned methods are suggested to help web-based platform service companies utilize user involvement across the new service development stages. This study is of qualitative nature with a deductive approach. We conducted eight semi-structured interviews in order to get insights from high-level managers responsible of the user-involvement process. All the small and medium-sized companies operated in the service sector and provided a web-based platform. The theoretical framework was utilized in order to analyze the empirical data gathered. We used thematic analysis for our deductive study approach, to interpret the gathered material in order to conclude the results and answer the research question.   Our results revealed that in the ideation and development stages the following is vital: involving lead-users or those who are tech-savvy and tolerant to ambiguity, educating users to familiarize them with the company’s system, moderate rules and structure, mixing focus groups, encouraging user-to-user communication, small number of participants, multi-media approach and online tools, and encouraging idea hunting culture among company’s staff. However, in testing the following is recommended: involving average-users or those who are open-minded and tolerant to risk and innovation, unifying goals and common view by tangibilizing the service, setting rules and regulations for testing the service, having permanent interactions with users, and large number of participants. Finally, it is important to ensure a close relationship, transparency, motivation, face-to-face interactions, and to have an entrepreneurial leader to oversee the whole process across all the former three stages of NSD. To improve on this study, we would recommend the investigation on the user perspective to gain insights on their views of the process of user-involvement across the NSD, as they are directly involved in the development of a new service. Hence, a more extensive research on the user-involvement in web-based platform service companies on both, internal and external facets instantaneously would be of great significance.
