"Hold That Thought" - sign language and the design of gesture interfaces

van der Zwan, Job Leonard January 2014 (has links)
Sign language has largely been dismissed in gesture interface research on grounds of being a natural language. This essay argues that this has been premature. We begin with an overview of relevant literature in the fields of both gesture interface design and sign language, followed by a discussion of other graphical and text-based user interfaces in the context of language - effectively a short essay on language and metaphors in interface design, going into more detail why I believe dismissing sign languages based on their linguistic nature is a mistake. This is further explored in an example user interface that was designed by taking an insight from sign language as a starting point to replace the desktop metaphor and combining it with the discussed text-based interfaces to extend the WIMP paradigm. This experimental design was used as a way to pose questions to users about potential uses of gesture interfaces.

Digitala tjänstens registreringsprocess – hur påverkar den helhetsintrycket?

Svensson, Jacob January 2013 (has links)
The outset of this thesis is to raise questions on how we design for the mobile context and the capabilities of smartphones. Not only the presentation but also the use of input and interaction between a service and a user. This work evolves around sign up forms and answers the question: How does the sign up process affect the holistic perspective of a digital service regarding usability and user experience? This thesis consists of a case studies, and design experiments conducted on Twitter, Instagram and Randos sign up processes to explore if and how the usability, and the user experience could be affected and im- proved. This concluded some important aspects to be considered when designing sign up forms for a digital service. The usability, and the user experience is not only affected by user interaction, and the choice of input method but it’s also affected by which data the service is requesting, and more important; if that data is motivated to request by the service.

Sign Language Translation

Sinander, Pierre, Issa, Tomas January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis was to create a data glove that can translate ASL by reading the finger- and hand movements. Furthermore, the applicability of conductive fabric as stretch sensors was explored. To read the hand gestures stretch sensors constructed from conductive fabric were attached to each finger of the glove to distinguish how much they were bent. The hand movements were registered using a 3-axis accelerometer which was mounted on the glove. The sensor values were read by an Arduino Nano 33 IoT mounted to the wrist of the glove which processed the readings and translated them into the corresponding sign. The microcontroller would then wirelessly transmit the result to another device through Bluetooth Low Energy. The glove was able to correctly translate all the signs of the ASL alphabet with an average accuracy of 93%. It was found that signs with small differences in hand gestures such as S and T were harder to distinguish between which would result in an accuracy of 70% for these specific signs.

Matematikböckers framställning avlikhetstecknet : En läromedelsanalys som undersöker hur läroböcker riktade till årskurs 1 gerutrymme för olika skildringar av likhetstecknet / Representation of the Equals Sign in Mathematics Textbooks : A textbook analysis investigating how textbooks targeting first grade providespace for different representations of the equals sign

Åhlander, Thea, Ellénius, Johanna January 2024 (has links)
Students' perception of the equals sign has for a long time been debated in research andconsidered critical, as the understanding of the relational meaning of the equals sign is oftenlacking. The purpose of this text is to examine how the equals sign is presented in Swedishtextbooks, and to discuss how it might affect students' perception of the symbol. This is doneby addressing the following questions: in what way do mathematics textbooks encourage arelational understanding of the equals sign, and in what way do they encourage anoperational understanding of the equals sign? The study is based on the ideas of variation theory, and the results are analyzed in relation topatterns of variation and critical aspects. Connections have also been made betweentraditional equations and an operational view of the equals sign, as well as non-traditionalequations and a relational view of the sign. The method used is a quantitative contentanalysis where three different Swedish mathematics textbooks, aimed at grade 1, are analyzedto observe how they vary in the presentation of the equals sign. The results indicate a lack ofvariation in terms of contrast, generalization, and fusion, as the textbooks predominantlyfocus on traditional equations. This may contribute to students developing an operationalview of the equals sign rather than a relational one, which could ultimately complicate thetransition from arithmetic to algebra in mathematics education.

The role of semiotics in the isiZulu radio drama and the impact it has on the culture of isiZulu-speaking community

Mgaga, Mandlendodakapheli Christian 06 1900 (has links)
Performance in isiZulu radio drama is imaginative and abstract to the listeners and radio drama writers make use of semiotic signs to convey intended action or information to the listeners. This research is meant to uncover the role of semiotics in the isiZulu radio drama and the impact it has on the culture of the isiZulu-speaking community. This study was dedicated to answer the following research questions: • How does semiotics play its role in isiZulu radio drama? • To what extent does semiotics play its role in isiZulu radio drama? • What impact it has on the culture of isiZulu-speaking community? To answer these research questions the researcher formulated the following objectives: • To identify different semiotic signs that plays a significant role in isiZulu radio drama. • To explore the role of semiotic signs in isiZulu radio drama. • To analyse the role of semiotic signs in isiZulu radio drama. • To examine the extent to which semiotic signs can influence the revival of cultural knowledge in isiZulu-speaking community. • To suggest for further research on the role of semiotics in isiZulu radio drama and the impact it has on the culture of isiZulu-speaking community. The researcher used a mixed method consisting of quantitative and qualitative approaches which examined the research problem by surveying isiZulu radio drama listeners, observing selected isiZulu radio drama scripts and conducting a telephone interview with the participant. The researcher found that semiotics play significant and different roles in isiZulu radio dramas and has the potential to revive cultural knowledge of the isiZulu-speaking community. The researcher recommended further research on the grounds that this study did not focus on the infringement that exists in isiZulu language, which is used in isiZulu radio dramas to fit the socio-economic, political, technological and demographic changes whether such infringement still restore and revive cultural knowledge of the isiZulu-speaking community. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)
