The permeability of a site: searching for a definition of the waterfront

Lidö, Oskar January 2023 (has links)
This project deals with the relationship between Stockholm and the water, investigating its history and searching for a definition of its future. As a city, Stockholm is defined by water; it creates physical distance in the city, but at the same time visually ties it together. Looking specifically at Söder Mälarstrand, an undefined waterfront with great potential, this project seeks to understand the current state of this site and propose a new use for it. How can this urban landscape be defined to accommodate a contemporary use of the waterfront? What should such a development look like architecturally? As a research method, this project looks beyond the physical extension of the site to the images of it constantly reproduced. Without romanticizing the past, the research searches for the character of the site to find a potential for its future use. The project proposes a new use of the waterfront. The quay is widened, and the new space that is created is anchored by the addition of three new volumes programmatically linked to the existing activity on the site, while also allowing new uses in the future. This approach aims to create a more defined public space, making the site permeable.

Drip Too Lagom : En Svensk Fucking Flex

Tillberg Bergström, Douglas January 2023 (has links)
Iced out vitguld, färggranna ädelstenar och emalj. / Iced out white gold, Colorful gemstones, and enamel. Bling communicates success and is a place to express one’s individuality, depicting anything from classic symbols to modern logos or cartoon characters.  But what happens if you apply American bling to Swedish symbols? And what are the differences between American and Swedish pop culture? If we change white gold to aluminium and enamel to spray paint? If instead of drip too hard, drip too lagom.

Bind : En fåtölj för Stockholms gemensamma vardagsrum

Aarna, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
In my thesis I have investigated how to design a comfortable seating furniture for public spaces, so that it can be produced and used in a sustainable way. This is particularly important in environments where furniture is worn at a high rate, and where repair is currently not prioritized and furniture is left to decay. In the project, I have worked site-specifically with Stockholm City Library, but designed with the idea that it can fit in several different environments. This degree project presents a proposal on how companies and municipalities can switch to a more circular way of using furniture. The design proposal presented is an alternative to an upholstered armchair. Bind is designed to be produced and used in a sustainable way, so that it can have a long and dignified life and contribute to a circular economy.

Starkie, Maxwell, Jobeus, Carl January 2023 (has links)

Vad händer i orten? : En diskussion kring narrativet om "utsatta områden" i Sverige

Hedén, Jonna January 2023 (has links)
This essay discusses the lived experiences and opinions of people living or working in so-called “vulnerable areas” in Sweden, predominantly in relation to issues of immigration and organized crime. Theoretically, the study uses Pierre Bourdieu’s framework surrounding capital and habitus and Norbert Elias concept of “the outsiders and the established”, while also drawing on the work of Gregory Bateson, Edward Said and more. This discourse analysis is based on empirical findings and interviews from fieldwork made in vulnerable areas in and around the Stockholm region, and aims to problematize the general discourse surrounding immigrants and their place in Swedish society by contrasting the views of the local population to the general narrative surrounding the areas. Generally, in Swedish media and amongst political representatives, vulnerable areas are often portrayed as dangerous areas inhabited primarily by immigrants, that culturally differs from the rest of Sweden and thus is seen to exist outside of general Swedish society. This essay argues the point of the studies respondents, which is that while it is to an extent understandable that these areas are associated with gang violence and disarray, it is highly stigmatizing and further drives a dichotomization between swedes and “non-swedes”. It also overlooks decades of exposure to segregation and socioeconomic disadvantages that migrant populations in Sweden have been subjected to, that has led to poverty and a subsequent rise in crime, as well as the emergence of parallel societies within Sweden.

Blomgren, Vilma, Aadli, Maria January 2022 (has links)
Respondenterna fick besvara frågor i en digital enkät där de fyra variablerna mättes via de väletablerade skalorna “New General Self-Efficacy Scale”, “Satisfaction with Life Scale”, “The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support” samt “Perceptions of Academic Stress”.

From obstacle to opportunity : Mapping of factors that affect the attractiveness of a bicycle network and production of a user-friendly bicycle map of Kungsholmen

Castan, Lukas, MODIG REISCH, LEA January 2023 (has links)
Bicycle traffic in Stockholm has varied a lot during the 18th century. During the latter part ofthe century, the city primarily funded the development of the city's public transportationsystem, rather than the bicycle infrastructure as many other cities did. The city ́ s bike mapsare seen as lacking and hard to read, which may be a reason for the bicycle share being lowerthan possible. The aim of the study is to produce a suggestion for a simplified bicycle network map overStockholm, in the same style as a public transportation map. Furthermore, Stockholm´sbicycle planning has been examined to gain a better understanding of the documents andactors involved in the city's bicycle planning, and the influence they have. The study was conducted through a literature study examining the bicycle infrastructure inStockholm and other European cities. The study primarily examined the factors contributingto a good bicycle network, but also how a route map can be developed and how heightdifferences along a bike route can be illustrated. In addition to the literary study an interviewwith a traffic planner at Stockholm´s municipality was conducted, giving a good look into thecity’s bicycle planning as well as presenting many different perspectives on the area. In orderto produce the map, the current bicycle infrastructure was surveyed, whereafter a map wasproduced based on the literary study´s design principles. It was found that Stockholm ́ s politicians to a large extent manage the bicycle planning, whichthe city´s traffic department then implements. The city bases its bicycle planning on its ownbicycle plan, which is complemented by the city’s detailed design handbook. The former isbased on Stockholm's vision and master plan, and describes the different types of bicycleroutes in the city along with the city´s objectives and goals for its bicycle planning. The actorwith the greatest influence on Stockholm ́ s bicycle planning is the city´s politicians, as theygovern and regulate the traffic department 's work. The department makes its ownprioritization in some cases, giving them some influence as well. Based on the surveying thatwas made, a map over Kungsholmen was created. The map can be useful in order to showpossible connections in the cycle network and encouraging inexperienced cyclists choosingthe bike.In order to further develop the map concept, the entirety of Stockholm should be mapped anddesigned. The map can be complemented by pathway markings and signage as it isimplemented further. Distribution of the map as well as digital solutions may be investigatedfurther.English title: From obstacle to opportunity: A study on factors affecting the attractiveness ofa bicycle network, and design of a user-friendly bicycle map over Kungsholmen, Stockholm.

Cederblad, Oscar January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to study the seemingly growing phenomenon in reconstructingfacades that have been removed and reworked by previous generations. With the establishment of modernism in Sweden during the beginning of the 20thcentury, the ideals for architecture changed. Politically, the idea was that the olderbuilding should be replaced in favor of a new modern building. This led to a large partof the older buildings from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20thcentury being reworked, the original facade was removed and replaced by a new oneaccording to the ideals of the modernist movement. Today, however, we see a seeminglygrowing phenomenon in reconstructing the facades that were removed duringmodernism. The study aims to find out why the facades were removed in the first placeand why they are being reconstructed today

Tensta Spånga Stadsdelshus

Karlsson, Sanna January 2020 (has links)
In my project i've been inspired by the phenomenon of "Folkets Hus" (≈ community center). Folkets Hus is usually a building that offers public meeting spaces for different kinds of cultural events, study circles, citizen organisations and many other activities. Due to the fact that Tensta doesn't possess their own Folkets Hus today, my intention is that the District Hall will also fill this function for the citizens of Tensta. The public space has therefore been given a crucial role in this project, and creates a meeting space for the people and the decision makers in the community, in hope for a fruitful exchange. My ambition was to create a inviting sphere for staff as well as visitors. An allowing space able to adapt to different needs and where several different events can take place at the same time. A room for the meaningful and for the fun.

Cycling as a Cooperative Act: Observing cyclists' interactions with pedestrians at a zebra crossing in Stockholm / Cykling som ett samagerande: Observationer av cyklisters interaktioner med fotgängare vid ett övergångsställe i Stockholm

Prichard, Edward January 2020 (has links)
Cycling is undergoing a welcome renaissance, especially in urban contexts. However, there are tensions, in relation to pedestrians, which could negatively affect cycling’s growth. This thesis observes the social interactions and physical reactions of cyclists when co-present with pedestrians at a zebra crossing in central Stockholm. It uses both in-person and video observations with the films being processed using an observiaire, a relatively novel, quantitative method of capturing human behaviours. The results were explored using ideas on the practice of cycling and the street as a social space. It seems that cyclist’s momentum and desire to save energy is clearly important as cyclists will do almost anything except stop for a pedestrian. However, they also seem to have an ability and wish to cooperate. This could be using waves, nods, or shouts, but also invisible and physical communication, what I term peripheral communication. Overall, the cyclists observed were constantly balancing their desire for efficiency against their consideration of pedestrians.
