Redefinindo o progresso: a ascensão política de pesquisas sobre bem-estar subjetivo / Redefining progress: the political rise of subjective well-being research

Freitas, Guilherme Melo de 21 February 2013 (has links)
Considering the recent emergence of the theme of happiness, highlighted in governmental discourse, in congresses organized by international organizations, or in recently signed statements, among similar events, this research tries to track the actions that may have contributed to the political rise of the subject mentioned. Undertaking a historical reconstitution of the production of research on subjective well-being, we found that the decisive role was played by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), who tried to promote alternative ways of conceiving and measuring progress beyond the sole consideration of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). By analyzing the Global Forums organized by the OECD in recent years, it was possible to identify crucial occasions on which the use of research data on subjective well-being by governments was enhanced. From the perspective offered by the literature about epistemic communities, this thesis brings elements which help understanding the value of scientific discourse in the contemporary political scenario.

The investigation is based on the conception of abstract subjective production, as shown by Deleuze and Guattari, as well as on the understanding of technical arrangements – museums, schools, industries – as parts of the social machine, inspired by the concept of technical machine, of the same authors. The object of study is the abstract subjective essence of art, as a process of abstraction typical of artistic machines. Artistic production necessarily involves an abstract subjective essence, beyond determinate objective representations. Artistic machines are productive arrangements from which abstraction techniques exceed the limits of symbolic systems toward praxis based on decoded flows contingent to the socius. These machines operate as functional parts to the capitalist economy by supporting its productive performance – for instance, scientific machines –, but also concern the formation of arrangements that overcome the regulatory injunctions of this system / Esta pesquisa propõe a produção abstrata subjetiva da ação artística como intrínseca aos agenciamentos técnicos da produção social.

Leal, Bruna Molina January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to problematize how the collective Colaí, Movimento de Cultura has built subjective territories from the experiences promoted in Ilha da Pintada, Porto Alegre. I followed the activities of Colaí, a collective of young people that was created from the initiative of a group of friends who sought to occupy the community square in a different way, promoting leisure, sports and cultural activities. Referenced by locals as a place of "drug trafficking" and with "suspicious persons" moving around, Dr. Salomão Pires Abraão Square was in the process of abandonment process, despite its central position in the community, next to the Almirante Barroso State School. So, when they organize actions such as Colaí na Praça, Colaí no Cinema, Colaí na Pelada, among others, Colaí becomes constituted as a collective, recreating the community’s life areas. When looking at the construction of subjective territories (GUATTARI; ROLNIK, 1986) – here understood both as the living space, and as the way the subjects circulate, insert themselves and create relations and life strategies in the social, cultural, aesthetic and affective times and spaces – it was asked about the ways in which young people organize and participate in the proposed activities, the strategies adopted by the collective, the relations among young people, their relations with the island areas, with the government, and with the community Methodologically, it is aimed to build a puzzle in which each piece, when assembled, presents new possibilities to understand a little more about the processes associated with the construction of subjective territories. For this, we follow ethnographic principles combined with a cartographic ethics. In this perspective, we propose to observe and to participate in actively, in order to follow the processes and inhabit territories, looking at the meetings and the established relations in the experiences of this group of young people. With elaboration of field diaries and recording of digital conversations, we developed a polyphonic and dialogic text to seek to promote a dialogue in this text between the researcher and the methodological character Colaí, built from the research participants’ speeches. The feeling of belonging to Colaí and the seeking for community recognition are noticeable among the participants of the research, and Colaí is marked by a neoliberal and entrepreneurial logic, while regulated by democratic principles in its actions. Its relationship with the community and geographical territory of the Ilha da Pintada are also points that deserve to be highlighted when looking for the subjective processes of young participants of the Colaí. These are clues and pieces that help us thinking about the building of subjective territories.

D'Ávila, Michele Nunes January 2016 (has links)
This paper aims to discuss how the intersectionality of social markers, such as gender, race, class and generation/age go through the relationship of women in the Projeto Mulheres da Paz - Women of Peace Project, in free translation - moving along the paths that led them to this social project, how do they define and understand the meaning of "being a woman of peace" and the relation of this social project in subjective processes. Through the narrative of life trajectories given by 10 women of peace, the intersectionality of these social markers and their crossings in relation to the study participants in the Women of Peace Project had been described and analyzed. Concepts from the field of gender relations and their articulation to intersectional issues were conductive wires for this study. From this research, it was possible to list and understand the magnitude of the marks designed by gender intersectionality, class, race and generation/age in the history of life of these women, focusing on the way they produce meaning in their participations in this social project Moreover, through the engagement in the program, other relevant elements intertwined transformations in subjectivity processes, such as the strengthening in community relations and empowerment; factors that had enabled changes in the interviewees‟ family relationships, learnings about gender relations and access to rights and participation in public spaces, in order to be recognized and valued. Another issue strongly pointed was the challenge put to the working practices/research which were based on intersectional look, in which the operationalization of the concept questions us on its complexity, at the same time that calls us to a more finely tuned and valuable perspective analysis of the social relations of power. Finally, it was realized that the field of public policies for women (and not only) have closer ties with the theoretical discussion and practice of intersectionality as a way to break away from risks that reproduce violation. Betting strategies that trigger changes in the power games existing in our society.

"Access to tertiary education": Exploring the experiences of women with physical disabilities in Kamwala, Zambia

Matambo, Luyeye Hope January 2017 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA (Women and Gender Studies) / Women with disabilities are marginalised in many aspects of societal participation. The majority of women with disabilities in Zambia do not have access to education and this has placed them amongst the poorest of people in the country. The study focuses on the experiences of women with physical disabilities and investigates the challenges they encounter in accessing education at tertiary level. The study comes at a time when the fight for gender equality has gained momentum and aims at promoting economic participation for all members of society without discrimination on the basis of sex or disability. The study engaged ten participants from a tertiary institution in Kamwala, Lusaka. I conducted a feminist qualitative research, which focused on the experiences of 19-30 year old female students with physical disabilities. I used semi-structured interviews in order to collect the data and drew on a qualitative thematic analysis to analyse the data. All standard ethical procedures were adhered to, including anonymity and confidentiality with respect to participants. The results of the study revealed that women with disabilities were often 'othered' due to myths and misconceptions that surrounded disability especially in the African- traditional context. The study also revealed that families played a very important role in ensuring that women and young girls with disabilities had a strong self-image, strong self-esteem and a strong sense of self and ensuring that they felt included within the homes and especially when accessing education. The study further revealed that where family support was lacking, participants faced challenges in accessing education compared to participants who received such support. More so, that educational opportunities in Zambia are generally gendered with more males than females in the education system, across the multiple levels. Access to the tertiary level for this group of women is compromised because challenges in accessing education start at the lower levels and have spill over effects in to the higher levels of education. Financial challenges experienced by women with disabilities and their families also led to fewer women with disabilities being able to participate in schooling. This is because where there were limited resources within the family, women, and girls with disabilities getting an education was not an option.

Efeitos de propriedades hedônicas de estímulos musicais sobre o tempo subjetivo em idosos / Effects of hedonic properties of musical stimulus on the subjective time of the elderly

Coelho, Marcelle de Oliveira 07 February 2018 (has links)
De modo geral, foi verificado que todos os participantes subestimaram o tempo, e uma tendência a um aumento do tempo reproduzido em relação ao aumento da idade, se aproximando mais do valor real de duração do estímulo musical / Studies suggest changes on the perception of subjective time with aging, being ordinary the statement that says \"time goes by faster\" with the increasing of age. Some of the factors that affect subjective time are the emotions and the hedonic value associated to musical stimulus. This study verified if emotional aspects related to different musical stimulus interfere on the subjective perception of time on different stages of old age. 54 people between 50 and 90 years old participated on the study. Four musical stimuli were presented to different age groups and time was estimated by the participant according to the prospective paradigm, through temporal reproduction. The results showed that there was a difference on reproduced times between the emotional categories Happiness and Sadness. Happy stimuli were longer than the Sad ones for all participants. Significant differences were found between the group under 60 years old and the group older than 80 years old, with shorter reproduction found in the group under 60 years old. Sad music presented meaningful positive correlation between subjective time and age, with longer subjective time with aging. Generally, it was verified that all participants underestimated time, along with a tendency to increase reproduced time related with aging, getting closer to the real value of the duration of musical stimulus

Dib Netto, João Henrique Chaer 26 June 2014 (has links)
The main concern of this work is to contribute to the recent discussion of subjective well-being (SWB) by suggesting a pseudopanel approach for the Happiness Equations. Using the WVS database and following the methodology suggested by Deaton (1985), cohorts of individuals were screened over the past 20 years to estimate the determinants of SWB. Cohorts were aggregated as an interaction of generation, gender and country of birth. It is important to point out that the pseudopanel estimation has several advantages, because it makes possible to control for unobservable cohort\'s fixed effects - which are likely sources of bias. Results indicate that the main determinants of SWB are: health, because subjective well-being has undeniable association to physical well-being; individual or aggregated income, because material goods bring utility, even considering the adaption effect and growing aspirations; employment, because beyond monetary gains, work also ensures self-steem and a higher social status; religion, because reflection, introspection and the belief in a Higher Self bring comfort in hard times, help to overcome adversities and bring hope and meaning to life; sense of freedom, because, in most situations, people prefer to have a sense of control over their choices and also extract utility of the decision process. Finally, considering the recent discussion in the literature about the loss of welfare of former socialist nations in transition to capitalism, the pseudopanel model was adapted to estimate the effect of this change in different generations. Results indicate that older generations were the one who suffered the most significant loss in terms of SWB. The behavior of life satisfaction in these countries assumed a V-shaped format: sudden decline with gradual recovey, which extends up until 2008.

What motivates A-level students to achieve? : the role of expectations and values

Brown, Carol January 2016 (has links)
Eccles' expectancy-value model of achievement motivation suggests that beliefs about ability and expectations for success are a strong predictor of grades and differences in task value underlie differences in motivation and achievement. This model has not been previously investigated in the context of high stakes examinations in the UK and this study therefore explores the relationships between expectations, values and A-level achievement in 930 students. This is important given the significance of these qualifications for future life pathways. Furthermore, studies examining the subjective task value (STV) patterns across school subjects, rather than domain specific ones, are rare, highlighting the additional importance of this work. A mixed methods design was used. A questionnaire collected information on a student's background (SES, gender, ethnicity), the expectations and STV attached to A-levels, and their future and general life expectations and values. Some of these relationships were also explored using 20 semi-structured interviews. The qualitative data illustrated that studying A-levels confirmed aspects of students' identity but also facilitated changes to their goals and academic skills, having positive effects, contrary to the argument that high stakes assessment has a negative impact on individuals. Unsurprisingly parents and teachers were perceived to be influential. As predicted, expectations and values were related to A-level achievement. As there is a lack of research into the effects of these variables on A-level outcomes these findings are valuable. Eccles' original three factor model of STV could not, however, be supported. In this research the utility construct was removed. Further exploration of the STV construct is warranted. Socio-economic status was positively related to both achievement and expectations about achievement. Girls had lower expectations but placed higher value on their A-levels. There were, however, no gender differences in achievement. Employing the expectancy-value model in this UK context has been useful in explaining the motivational patterns underlying A-level qualifications and the findings have implications for enhancing outcomes and narrowing educational gaps in this student population.

The influence of personality on primate health, welfare, and happiness

Robinson, Lauren Marie January 2017 (has links)
Is personality important for understanding the variation we see in animal welfare? In this thesis, I address that question by studying the association between personality and health, welfare, and happiness in three species of nonhuman primate: rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), brown capuchins (Sapajus apella), and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). As part of this research I test a newly designed animal welfare questionnaire. In Chapter 1 I review how animal welfare questionnaires can be designed and implemented as an addition tool for assessing animal welfare. In Chapter 2 I present a study of rhesus macaque personality, dominance, behaviour, and health. In Chapter 3 I test the reliability and validity of my animal welfare questionnaire. In Chapter 4 I extended my work on welfare questionnaires to test if they are valid for assessment of chimpanzee welfare and associated with personality. I specifically test if welfare ratings are based on observed behaviour. I conclude my quantitative work in Chapter 5 with a study testing the association between personality and health, welfare, and subjective well-being in rhesus macaques. Finally, Chapter 6 includes my conclusions and future directions for this line of research. Across all four quantitative studies some common trends were found. First, personality is associated with overall welfare and health. Second, welfare questionnaires are reliable and valid way to assess welfare in the studied species. And third, welfare and subjective well-being are measuring the same construct in these species. Overall, I conclude that personality is clearly useful for understanding animal welfare and that questionnaires are a reliable, valid, and valuable method of animal welfare assessment, in additional to traditional methods.

O interacionismo na produção de textos dissertativos /

Gonçalves, Adair Vieira. January 2002 (has links)
Abstract: This essay analyses in what ways the interectionist conception of the language can make easy the writing of argumentative-expositive texts contrasting this conception to the others (language as a reflex of the thought and language as an instrument of communication) and from this text definition, according to the latest tendencies of language studies of the language, the composition intends to show through the chosen categories for analyses, such as progression and repetition, congruence, argumentation, monologic language transposition into dialogic and progression, in what ways a argumentative-expositive composition must be configured, when objective be inter subjective. In a second moment it intends to evaluate the good or the bad points of this practice through the instauration of an interecionist writing exercise by means of a methodology entitled interactive correction. / Mestre
