Interrogating White Culture, Colorblind Intersectionality, and Internalized Racial Superiority through Spatial Justice: A Qualitative Examination of White Grassroots Activists in Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ)

Lee, Tina Rosa January 2023 (has links)
White ways of understanding, perceiving, and knowing continue to be centered in the field of psychology, leaving a deficit of knowledge around effective antiracist pedagogy, research, and training. Although psychologists have a natural place in strengthening social justice initiatives to broader antiracist advocacy, the field has had a long history of perpetuating racism, racial discrimination, and human hierarchy in the United States. White Supremacy Culture, outdated professional socialization practices, and hostile training environments continue to lead to high attrition rates, racial trauma, and compounding mental health issues for BIPOC. Moreover, epistemic restrictions and the lack of precise guidelines on implementing antiracism practices remain barriers to advancing racial equity within the field. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR), this study identified antiracist frameworks and guidelines that psychology training programs could construct from the experiences, motivations, and practices of White activists in Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), one of the most visible racial justice organizations in the United States. Through semi-structured interviews with 14 SURJ activists, this study generated eight major domains with three to five themes per domain. Applying theoretical frameworks of Critical Whiteness Studies, White Supremacy Culture, and spatial justice, findings revealed the range of ways in which SURJ activists used spatial justice praxis or counter-spaces against White Supremacy Culture to work through the barriers of being an effective White activist and to advance antiracism by finding their mutual interests, or personal stakes, in the racial justice movement. Implications for psychology training programs, study limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Systemic Anti-Black Violence in Indiana: A Digital Public History Wikipedia Project

Hellmich, Madeline Mae 07 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The most recent racial justice movement that emerged in the United States beginning in the summer of 2020 in response to the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd laid bare the overdue need to revisit white America’s legacy of racist violence against its Black citizens. Historians can help bridge the gap between past and present and urge more Americans to identify and confront racial violence. As a born-and-raised Hoosier, I wanted to contribute to social change and racial justice at home. The historical silence on the history of racist violence in Indiana supports the myth that Indiana was a free state where Black citizens found refuge from the racist violence they experienced in the South; thousands of primary source newspapers containing details of white perpetrators lynching and violently attacking Black Hoosiers refute this myth. This paper identifies white perpetrators’ acts of anti-Black violence and Black Hoosiers resistance to anti-Black violence throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This analysis of racial violence in Indiana shows that white perpetrators employed violence in defense of white supremacy and that Black Hoosiers resisted anti-Black violence and white supremacy. The record indicates that racial terrorism has been embedded in the fabric of Indiana since its founding. Grassroots efforts, such as the Facing Injustice Project’s work to acknowledge the 1901 lynching of George Ward in Terre Haute, Indiana, are starting to recognize the harm white Hoosiers did to Black Hoosiers and bring repair to victims’ descendants and communities. More public history projects are needed to engage all Hoosiers in reckoning with the history of anti-Black violence. Activists and organizations have shown that Wikipedia is one digital institution where anyone can do the work of rooting out inequalities and injustices. This digital public history Wikipedia project challenges the historical silence on Indiana’s racially violent past by telling the truth about the history on one of the most-visited websites in the world. Using Wikipedia to do public history invites Hoosiers of all backgrounds to take up the work of acknowledging Indiana’s history of anti-Black violence, updating the historic record, and reevaluating the narrative constantly.

THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ‘WAGES OF WHITENESS’: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF APPLICANT’S RACE, SEX, AND CRIMINAL RECORD STATUS ON THE APPLICANT REVIEW, EVALUATION, AND HIRING OUTCOME

Stanford, Brandon Michael January 2020 (has links)
Most research on the effects of race on people’s lived experiences focuses on how race affects the lives of people of color. Since the 1990’s, a growing body of literature has focused on “Whiteness” in society. Most “Whiteness Studies” focus on how “White” developed as a racial category and how various ethnic/national groups (e.g., Irish, Italians, Jews, Germans) came to be included under that racial label. However, nearly a century ago, in 1935, sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois referred to the public and psychological wage for Whiteness—in part, meaning the societal gravity or weight that the label “White” tends to carry. Du Bois’ oft-quoted proposition has never been empirically tested. The present study used the experimental method to empirically test Du Bois’ proposition. Using mock job applications that were identical except that (1) the applicant’s photograph had been electronically manipulated to vary race (Black or Caucasian) and sex (male or female) and (2) the application either did or did not suggest the applicant had a pending criminal charge. Each participant evaluated one mock applicant on a variety of employment and personality scales. Major findings show a main, usually negative, effect of criminal records status on ratings. Interaction effects show that participants ranked Black applicants with a pending criminal record higher than Whites with a pending record, while the reverse was true when applicants had no criminal record. Social desirability bias, and other possibilities (e.g., heightened socio-political consciousness and identification) – are discussed as possible explanation effects, including absence of prominent race or sex effects. / African American Studies

(Re)positioning the Compass: White Anti-Racist Literacy and ELA Teachers

Harlan Eller, Katie Elizabeth January 2024 (has links)
Research on social illiteracy (Rand, 2021) and the demographic imperative (Jupp et al., 2019)—as well as teachers’ stated responsibilities in teaching about race and racism in schools (Rand, 2021)—convey the urgency of attending to both barriers and possibilities for white literacy and English Language Arts (ELA) teachers. As literacy is inextricably linked with equity, literacy classrooms mark a site of sanctioning or resisting oppressions rooted in the white supremacist status quo. Following recent articulations of critical race and whiteness frameworks—particularly white supremacy logic (Enumah, 2021)—this research aims to explore white anti-racist educators teaching in the post-2020 evolving and contested field of education. Rooted in a theoretical framework of “rehumanizing praxis,” or simultaneous inward and outward pedagogies, this inquiry prioritizes humanizing research with participants through interviews, observations, reflections, and artifacts. Situated in critical constructivist grounded theory methodology, I enacted a research design intended to explore the internal and external barriers, possibilities, and pedagogies six white anti-racist teachers experience in their endeavors to participate in liberatory education.

Ephesians and Artemis : the influence of the religious climate of western Asia Minor of the first century AD on the content and terminology of Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23

Visagie, André Jacobus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis interacts with the generally held view that Ephesians is a general epistle with no concrete historical context and contingency, by arguing that this letter addresses particular religious concerns and beliefs of the believers of Ephesus and surrounds. A focussed literary survey of the religious-historical material of the western Mediterranean region in the first century AD is conducted, with particular attention paid to the cult of the Ephesian Artemis and the prevalence of magic. Special focus is placed upon Ephesians 1:15-23, which is exegeted using both grammatical-historical and socio-rhetorical methods of interpretation to gain insights into how the author employed and reformulated contemporary terms and concepts to demonstrate the lordship of Jesus Christ. Serious consideration of the religious and magical context of the first century Greco-Roman world when interpreting this letter to the Ephesians may open many possible avenues for future study, particularly in the area of understanding the letter in an African context.

Sjögren, Fredrik, Sällvik, Fredrik January 2007 (has links)

The purpose of this paper is to present a possible understanding of why the company Tekola is segregated according to sex. In accordance to this purpose, an understanding of how the segregation affects the employees in relation to power, values and possibilities is discussed. The theoretical understanding is that the organization of men and women within Tekola is done in close connection to creation of the meaning of gender in Tekola. This, in turn, affects and is affected by the recruitment to and within the company. Through the study of statistics from a survey, five interviews with employees and former employees and Tekolas’ equality plan, we are able to see the possible existence of a glass ceiling, and a culture of homosociality, which affects the possibilities of women to enter the company and also to gain full entrance to power-positions in a negative way. There is also a possibility that sexual harassment exists in Tekola. There is a clear feminization of one of the departments, a phenomenon that affects acts directed at and around that department. Also, we are able to see that there is a gap between the actual segregation between men and women in Tekola, and the employees’ perception of their possibilities.
/

Civil military operations in Ecuador

Camacho, Carlos Eduardo Paladines. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / Civil Military Operations (CMO) has often been blamed for the politicization of the armed forces and a loss of civilian control. This thesis confronts this traditional approach and argues that CMO need not lead to these outcomes. It introduces democratic civilian control of the armed forces, a well-established military mission, and civilian and military expertise as the basic requirements for the application of CMO. If the requirements are fulfilled, a multiplier effects starts giving legitimacy to the government, consolidating the democratic process and increasing civilian control over the armed forces. This thesis examines Ecuador as a case study. Ecuador fulfills partially the requirements for the application of CMO. The State's structure allows democratic civilian control. There is a well-established mission: the north frontier of Ecuador has become a "gap" in the national security system that demands the assistance of the armed forces. But there is lack of civilian and military expertise in the application of CMO. The demand of CMO in the north frontier can be the perfect scenario for training and education in Civil Military Affairs, fulfilling the requirement of expertise and thus allowing the application of CMO in Ecuador without risking the democratic regime. / Civilian, National Congress, Ecuador

Transação tributária no Brasil: supremacia do interesse público e a satisfação do crédito tributário

Parisi, Fernanda Drummond 11 March 2016 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fernanda Drummond Parisi.pdf: 908960 bytes, checksum: d8de3f44858e838b511124099be18d0e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study is focused on the tax transaction between the Government and tax payers. The scope of the analysis of this legal institute, created to be an alternative way to set up tax obligations, goes beyond the interpretation of the instrument itself, covering theoretical and axiological assumptions contained explicitly or not, in the legal system. Tax transaction may be a mean of tax credits payment arising from law obligation, but as it is an alternative by regular payments, it does really need to be understood from a systemic point of view, covering the whole legal system. The transaction is not really new, but it hasn´t already been totally accepted by legal operators because there are a lot of prejudices regarding the alternative tax mean of payment. Actually people are still afraid that transaction become a legal tool to avoid taxation and may reduce state revenues compromising the supremacy of the public interest. The tax credits are required by Government activity endorsed by law contains and are protected by lots of rules that guarantees the liability presumed of credits obligations. That is why this study´s scenario seems to be so challenging. It seems very important to spend some reflection on this issue and to understand the tax payments in a bigger perspective, although it can´t be a complete study, it may bring some lights to the subject. The relevance of the study gets bigger considering the actual Judiciary crises, because it is outstanding knowledge of mostly law suits are filed by Public revenues in order to charge not payed taxes. So this study claims are indeed necessary and will be leaded by the new thinking about the supremacy of public interest and its impact on demand of tax debt / O presente trabalho tem por foco o estudo da transação tributária, instituto previsto no Código Tributário Nacional como causa de extinção do crédito tributário.
