From interviews and free targeted with the inmates, it was concluded that the intramural prison develops a parallel network of sociability permeated power and submission specifically differentiated from institutionalized power by the state. The practice of tattooing in prisons is within that singular context. Expressing the subjectivity of the individual, the relationship of power and submission, the construction of individual identity and social and social stigma. The practice of tattooing in prisons prepare a universe enigmatic world of crime. A prison tattoo embodies a practical use of cultural and social conflicts delineated by interior and exterior construction of individual identity and social conditions, resulting from these inter-social relations. Therefore this new identity will be built on the edge between faint sudden rupture of self-identity in the world society which he lived and the new identity which is now built upon entry into prison, where the mutilation of the self happens all moment and in all aspects of social life. It is at that threshold where the faint signs that represent crime are entered under the skin. The chosen design and location to be tattooed denounce the particular characteristics of each individual's personality, a ritual identification of the convict as such. A prison tattoo is renowned for its thick strokes and evil designs finished result of the basic techniques used in prisons.

Andersson, Andreas January 2015 (has links)

Imaging the body : a discourse analysis of the writings of people with tattoos

Saccaggi, Caroline Francesca 12 January 2009 (has links)
The increased popularity of tattooing in recent years serves as the backdrop for this research report. As tattooing has grown in popularity it has become increasingly mainstream and has been embraced by people from all walks of life. In particular, a large Internet archive of tattoos has emerged, that contains narratives by people with tattoos as well as numerous pictures of tattoos. In this research report a discourse analysis was conducted on fifty-two of these Internet postings, in order to ascertain what discourse were in use in these postings. Thus, the discourse analysis looked at the ways in which having a tattoo/ being tattooed were constructed within these postings. In order for the discourse analysis to be conducted, the research first embarked on an extensive review of literature, that looked at the academic readings of tattooing. It was found that these readings were varied, and that it was possible to read tattooing in many different ways. Both positive and negative readings of tattoos are highlighted within the literature review. The theoretical backdrop of social constructionism informs the methodology section of the research, as it presents a detailed and contradictory discussion of the field of discourse analysis. Rather than unproblematically claiming to produce a discourse analysis, the research interrogated the term itself, highlighting the contradictions in the field before narrowing to the presentation of a pragmatic approach to discourse analysis that was used in this specific research report. Following the debate in both the literature review and the methodology, three discourses were identified by the discourse analysis conducted. The first discourse relates to tattooing as being a definition or a redefinition of the self, a way to construct a new and complete identity. The second discourse refers to the process of getting a tattoo as providing access to a certain way of speaking that is only available to those who have tattoos. The third discourse identified looks at the construction of the tattoo artist as expert, and the role that the tattoo artist has as a gatekeeper to the discourses of tattooing. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Psychology / unrestricted

Main current approaches to the phenomenon of tattoo, historical development and changes of its situation in western culture are introduced in the theoretical part. The empirical part then draws on data acquired from semi-structured interviews with tattooed and potentially tattooed living in Czech Republic.

Psychologické aspekty tetování / Psychological aspects of tatoo

Kdolská, Helena January 2021 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to conduct qualitative research aimed at psychological aspects of tattoos in the form of ethnographic study. The research follows a relationship between an individual and his tattoos with the main topics being a motivation for getting a tattoo, meaning of the tattoo for the owner, and the relationship between the artist and his client. Data were gathered using unstructured interviews with an emphasis on building trust between the researcher and the interviewee. The study concludes the motivation can be distinguished into internal and external. The internal motivation represents the benefits tattoos can bring to his owner while the external motivation shows the ways an individual can use the tattoo to send a message to others. As for the owner-tattoo relationship, results show variations in how can one perceive his tattoos and what tattoo could mean for the owner. Some of the respondents viewed their tattoos as just a body decoration, others used them as symbols of their own deeper thoughts and lifestyle. When exploring the artist-client relationship, it has been found out trust and mutual sympathies as well as setting up proper boundaries to keep the relationship on the professional level all seem to play an important role. Social Representations of Taukuka: A social knowledge approach to the preservation of Bellonese intangible cultural heritage

Leeming, David January 2016 (has links)
Solomon Islands along with other Pacific Islands nations is adopting legislation designed to protect traditional knowledge and expressions of culture from misappropriation, attrition and loss of economic opportunity for owners. These developments require the state to engage across a highly pluralistic customary and social landscape. Ethnographic studies have shown that owing to such plurality unintended consequences may arise from attempts to rationalise indigenous conceptualisations such as customary laws to render them accessible to outside interests. The preservation of intangible cultural heritage requires understanding of the communicative processes that maintain its significance and value and which are involved in its continuation, transformation and transmission. This study approaches this challenge from the perspective of social knowledge; the common-sense and empirical reality experienced by the owners of a representative aspect of the culture. The case chosen for this research is the ritual taukuka tattooing practice of the Bellonese people of Solomon Islands. Social representations theory is used to show that the field of representation of this cultural practice is heterogeneous with consensual and non-consensual features. Whilst revival of the taukuka is unlikely due to prerequisite religious ontology, its preservation as significant heritage where ownership remains with the lineages and families may best be assured through cultural education and artistic representations.

Embodiment: Permanent Self-Affirmation as a Repudiation of Internal, Categorical Harms to Identity

Gardner, Jocelyn D. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Categorization is a process that simplifies thoughts into manageable pieces by grouping related entities. This reductive analysis can lead to internal harm in individuals’ overarching identities, or Ganzheiten, which is the focus of this thesis. Given that categorization is necessary to our conceptual management of the world, is there a way to counteract the internal harms it can cause? Because acts of self-affirmation can have healing effects, I argue that one manifestation of permanent self-affirmation—custom tattooing—can be an effective repudiation of the divisiveness and reduction categories cause. Custom tattooing’s permanence, individualization, and personal significance make it a great choice as a method of healing internal damage caused by external categorization. Though tattoos might not be the answer for every person experiencing internalized categorization, I have shown that it should be considered as a valid source for the self-affirmation needed to heal from or counteract such internalized harms.

Corporeidade em psicanálise: tatuagem e fenômeno psicossomático, o corpo marcado e o laço social

Ferraretto, Stella Guimarães 29 July 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T13:32:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Stella Guimaraes Ferraretto.pdf: 750644 bytes, checksum: 66969aed36dcab7cf20ffd10d5492a05 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-07-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Marks on the body, especially tattoos and psychosomatic phenomenon, skin lesions, are the objects we deal with on this work, making use of the psychoanalytical theory, which treats corporeité as Lacan has postulated on this teachings, and we do so passing through the three registers: Real, Symbolic and Imaginary. We start from the initial lacanian thesis about the insertion of the subject on the symbolic at the moment of its conception, from the statement the symbol is the death of the thing , from the idea of the body as desert of jouissance , that is, the jouissance denied to the being who speaks, until the final proposition of this teachings, namely that in order to experience jouissance one must have a body. And the production of a body in different connections and registers, plus the entrance into the discourse as from of jouissance ordering, are both also related to the entrance of the subject into the social link. Arriving at the real of lalangue, we observe that this real pervades all the question of the body and its marks, voluntary like tattoo, and involuntary like the psychosomatic phenomenon, which are similar because they leave marks on the body, but with processes underlying their inscription being absolutely distinct, as is the psychic ordering, casting light on psychoanalytic concepts acting differently on the subjects. Reviewing history, taking into account the socio-cultural aspects, moving through theories wich intercommunicate with Psychoanalysis, 9 like the Social Sciences and Anthropology, using excepts from interviws, in the case of tattoos, and also by presenting two clinicals cases of a patient with psoriasis, we show, in our work, the existence of a strong opposition between the two types of marks on the body, but wich nonetheless present traits in common: both produce social links, although in distinct processes / As marcas corporais, especificamente a tatuagem e o fenômeno psicossomático, lesão na pele, são as questões que abordamos neste trabalho, fazendo uso da teoria psicanalítica que trata a corporeidade como Lacan postulou no decorrer de seu ensino, passando pelos três registros: Real, Simbólico e Imaginário.

Tělo za katrem: Význam zdobení těla odsouzených ve výkonu trestu odnětí svobody / The body behind bars: The importance of decorating the body of convicts

Lochmannová, Alena January 2018 (has links)
The dissertation deals with the issue of physical modifications, especially tattoos, in the environment of Czech male prisons. It is based on ethnographic research conducted between 2013 and 2017 in a total of five Czech men's security prisons. The aim of the thesis is to describe the phenomenon of decorating the body of inmates sentenced to serve prison sentences in Czech male prisons and to present the interpretative and meaningful potential of body treatments, especially tattooing, in relation to the so-called second life of the convicted. As a part of the thesis, the design of ethnographic research in the environment of Czech male prisons, including its limits and pitfalls, is presented, while the specificity of this research field in the field of socio-scientific research is demonstrated. Attention is paid to the issue and importance of body in the prison environment and, in consequence, to body modifications that are used at the prison level to resist against the attempt to discipline convicts' bodies through unified institutional practices. Emphasis is placed primarily on tattooing as the most frequent and the most significant physical modification of the criminal subculture in the Czech prison environment. The final chapter and the pivotal part of this thesis brings the categorization of...
