Dussoulier, Anne 08 1900 (has links)
The 16th century was a time of change where the family decreases and becomes an ideal projection, symbolizing the dynastic aspirations and prestige to the Venetian families. Meanwhile, in religious iconography the Holy Family stands out as ideal iconographic motif, around a brief family unit constituted by Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The family and the Holy Family became prime subject in painting, and especially in Venetian artistic production. The visual promotion of the women is common point between these representations, aspect rather surprising if we think of the society and the catholic religion, which are highly patriarchal. This work is interested in this feminine position and what can be deduct from it, and lean on a corpus of Venetian works of the 16th century.

Kingdom Compossible

Lauterio, Ryan 01 January 2009 (has links)
Does God exist? Can we know for sure? What might it mean to know this? Furthermore what might it look like to make works of art while also seeking to find answers to these questions? This thesis details my personal experiences growing up in a world steeped in postmodernism and my move to answer such questions while looking to develop a meaningful, clear worldview and body of work. I have turned my focus on specific episodes in my life, which significantly illuminate a progression of thinking and experience. Together these thoughts and experiences have become the impetus for both questions and propositions embedded within the long haul of my work culminating in my thesis exhibition.

Banner, Anne-Sophie 12 1900 (has links)
During the Renaissance, the paintings by Lodewijk Toeput, known as Lodovico Pozzoserrato, contributed to enrich the iconography and the history of Venetian gardens. The works by Toeput also combine the heritage of the Flemish artistic tradition with the Venetian culture, marked by the ideology of the villa and the musical world. By merging Flemish art with Venetian culture, Toeput creates a hybridization symptomatic of cultural exchanges between Italy and Flanders during the second half of the 16th century. This master’s thesis situates the representations of gardens and the personality of the artist within the Venetian historical and artistic context in the 16th century. In addition, this master’s thesis also aims to analyze the painter’s images of gardens through the concept of “cultural transfer” in order to emphasize the combination of Flemish and Venetian influences. This paper will also determine the consequences of this union in the history of the Flemish and Venetian art.

The Leo Castelli Gallery in Metro magazine : American approaches to post-abstract figuration in an Italian context

McKetta, Dorothy Jean 26 October 2012 (has links)
Between the years 1960 and 1970, New York gallerist Leo Castelli was closely involved with Milanese editor and publisher Bruno Alfieri's Metro magazine--an international review of contemporary art. By placing his artists in Metro, Castelli inserted them into the world of Italian art criticism and theory. This recontextualization familiarized the American artists of Castelli's gallery to a European audience and positioned them at the end of a succession of modern European styles. Specifically, Castelli's artists, each of whom engaged in a form of pictorial figuration, were seen as ending the dominance of the "pure" abstraction of the French informel style. This thesis uses the archive of correspondence between Bruno Alfieri and Leo Castelli to examine Castelli's contribution to Metro during the 1960s. Departing from this chronology, it also seeks to understand the unique brand of figuration that each of Castelli's artists brought to Metro, given cues from contemporary Italian theory and criticism--particularly that of Gillo Dorfles, who wrote on several of Castelli's artists. / text

L'univers médiéval et ses figures de représentations dans l'opéra italien (1690-1730) / medieval universe and its representation's figures in Italian Opera (1690-1730)

Piffaut, Ludovic 19 October 2012 (has links)
Medieval universe took an important place in the Italian poetic culture from the 16th to the 18th century. Emblems of this universe, Ariosto and Tasso’s epic poems, imitated of Homer’s, upgraded to most popular histories of the Italians theatres of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Middle Ages’ representation in Opera between 1690 and 1730, showed a diversity of esthetics but dramatic and poetic figures too. Thanks to the Accademia dell’Arcadia, the renovation of the libretto led to consider new prospects of its exploitation. Zeno developed the new vision of Middle Ages contrary to Metastasio. Supporting by French tragedy, this renovation unified with strength poetical and musical art. The aria symbolized the meeting point of affects and their musical representations. It contributed to the celebrity of Vinci’s and Hasse’s Artaserse (1730). These two operas hastened the decline of medieval subjects and installed a new lyric model.

Giovanni Battista Ramusio et la constitution d'un savoir géographique à Venise au XVIè siècle : parcours scientifique et horizon politique / Giovanni Battista Ramusio and the constitution of geographical knowledge in sixteenth-century Venice : scientific itinerary and political perspective

Lejosne, Fiona 21 November 2016 (has links)
The three-volume compilation, Navigationi et viaggi, published in Venice from 1550 to 1559, is the work of the humanist geographer Giovanni Battista Ramusio (1485-1557), who collected and edited geographical texts throughout the first half of the 16th century. The compiler attempted to update the description of the known world by employing new modes of knowledge, primarily based on the experiences of those who had taken part in exploratory travels. Ramusio, who served the Republic of Venice as a secretary at the chancellery, benefited from a broad network of collaborators who provided him with testimonies and travel accounts. My research offers the first joint analysis of Ramusio, the armchair geographer and secretary, within the context of early-modern Venice.Based on archival research, the first part of this work offers a reconstruction of Ramusio’s laboratory as part of the institutions of the Republic of Venice, the scholarly environment of Italy, and the world of Venetian publishing. The interrelation between his own interests and his professional prerogatives is established through a study of his scholarly approach and official role. The second part of this study focuses on the compilation, taking into account Ramusio’s influences, as well as his original choices for the organisation and selection of knowledge and sources. The objectives of this work of political geography are examined in the third part through an analysis of Ramusio’s own writings, the Navigationi et viaggi’s discorsi.

Lexical cohesion register variation in transition : "The merchants of Venice" in afrikaans

Kruger, Alet 03 1900 (has links)
On the assumption that different registers of translated drama have different functions and that they therefore present information differently, the aim of the present study is to identify textual features that distinguish an Afrikaans stage translation from a page translation of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The first issue addressed concerns the nature and extent of lexical cohesion in these two registers. The second issue concerns my contention that the dialogue of a stage translation is more "involved". (Biber 1988) than that of a page translation. The research was conducted within the overall Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) paradigm but the analytical frameworks by means of which these aims were accomplished were derived from text linguistics and register variation studies, making this an interdisciplinary study. Aspects of Hoey's ( 1991) bonding model, in particular, the classification of repetition links, were adapted so as to quantify lexical cohesion in the translations. Similarly, aspects of Biber's (1988) multi-dimensional approach to register variation were used to quantify linguistic features that signal involvement. The main finding of the study is that drama translation register (page or stage translation) does have a constraining effect on lexical cohesion and involved production. For Act IV of the play an overall higher density of lexical cohesion strategies was generated by the stage translation. In the case of the involved production features analysed, the overall finding was that the stage translation displayed more involvement than the page translation, to a statistically highly significant extent. The features analysed here cluster together sufficiently to reveal that in comparison with an Afrikaans page translation of a Shakespeare play, a recent stage translation displays a definite tendency towards a more oral, more involved and more situated style, reflecting no doubt a general modern trend towards creating more appropriate and accessible texts / Linguistics / D. Networks of Social Debt in Early Modern Literature and Culture

Criswell, Christopher C. 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis argues that social debt profoundly transformed the environment in which literature was produced and experienced in the early modern period. In each chapter, I examine the various ways in which social debt affected Renaissance writers and the literature they produced. While considering the cultural changes regarding patronage, love, friendship, and debt, I will analyze the poetry and drama of Ben Jonson, Lady Mary Wroth, William Shakespeare, and Thomas Middleton. Each of these writers experiences social debt in a unique and revealing way. Ben Jonson's participation in networks of social debt via poetry allowed him to secure both a livelihood and a place in the Jacobean court through exchanges of poetry and patronage. The issue of social debt pervades both Wroth's life and her writing. Love and debt are intertwined in the actions of her father, the death of her husband, and the themes of her sonnets and pastoral tragicomedy. In Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (c. 1596), Antonio and Bassanio’s friendship is tested by a burdensome interpersonal debt, which can only be alleviated by an outsider. This indicated the transition from honor-based credit system to an impersonal system of commercial exchange. Middleton’s A Trick to Catch the Old One (1608) examines how those heavily in debt dealt with both the social and legal consequences of defaulting on loans.
