“This is who I am” : Representation av asexualitet i samtida coming of age-litteratur

Lilja, Malin January 2021 (has links)
The aim of the study is to explore representations of asexuality in contemporary coming of age young adult novels with a focus on how asexuality is made (im)possible as an unproblematic position. This is done through a close reading of the novels Tash Hearts Tolstoy, Let’s Talk About Love, Loveless and Beyond the Black Door from a queer theoretical perspective. The novels’ depictions of asexuality challenge notions that sexual desire is an essential part of becoming an adult and allow the asexual position to exist without being shaped by negative stereotypes. The protagonists of the novels go through processes of realizing and accepting their asexuality for themselves and also coming out to their surroundings. Compulsory sexuality is constantly present in these processes, but it is the marginalization of the asexual position in relation to compulsory sexuality that is understood as the problem rather than asexuality itself. / <p>2021-06-02</p>

Dietary Intake and Bone Mineral Density in Young-Adult Females

Beiseigel, Jeannemarie Mary 23 August 2000 (has links)
The late second and early third decades of life are critical periods for bone health due to the attainment of peak bone mass during this time, yet little is known about relationships between lifestyle factors and bone health among young-adult females. Therefore, anthropometric, body composition, and nutritional variables were examined in relation to bone mineral density (BMD) and biochemical markers of bone turnover in a group of 60 healthy, young-adult females aged 18 to 25 years. Body weight, body mass index (BMI), fat-free soft tissue mass (FFST), and fat mass had statistically significant and positive associations with BMD. Mean daily dietary protein, magnesium, and iron intakes had statistically significant and negative associations with BMD. A second study compared dietary intake, BMD, and biochemical markers of bone turnover in young-adult females with chronic dieting habits to nondieters. Anthropometric and body composition variables between chronic dieters and nondieters were not statistically different; however, chronic dieters had statistically significantly lower average daily dietary intakes of energy, macronutrients, and selected micronutrients compared to nondieters. Chronic dieters had statistically significantly higher whole body (WB) BMD compared to nondieters. Moderate effects were observed for WB, lumbar spine, trochanter, and total proximal femur BMD such that chronic dieters possessed greater BMD compared to nondieters. It appears that among young-adult females, total body weight, particularly FFST mass, has an important association with BMD. Although nutritional inadequacies among young-adult females raise concerns, overconsumption of nutrients may increase the likelihood of nutrient-nutrient interactions that may have a less than optimal impact on BMD. Future investigations of dietary intake and BMD among young-adult females are warranted. / Master of Science

Bland soffor och sittpuffar : En fallstudie av planeringen av ungdomsavdelningarna hos tre svenska folkbibliotek / Among cushions and couches. : A multiple case study on planning youth spaces in three public libraries in Sweden.

Engström, Maria January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine youth spaces in public libraries from an explorative point of view, by identifying which needs of the target group are currently being prioritized and what kind of obstacles needs to be overcome in the planning process. The approach chosen is the case study. Interviews were conducted with librarians working with youths, and observations of youth spaces were carried out in an attempt to gain information about usage. The material was processed through thematic analysis in a comparison between the three libraries and the theoretical framework used through the analysis is Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen &amp; Skot-Hansen’s four-space model and its predecessor. Results from the study show that the examined libraries share similar experiences during the planning processes, and the found obstacles can be directed to either the category organization and planning (concerning the planning process and the lack of time, money or an understanding leadership) or architecture and interior (concerning the lack of space, adequate furniture or proper signage). The three main themes or library functions concerning the youth spaces are: 1, a relaxing place to hang out; 2, a rich, varied and easy accessible media collection; 3, a creative place to express oneself. The conducted observations reveal that the youth spaces are heavily used by library visitors outside the target group, with an age range from approximately 1 to 75 years. In conclusion I have found that the four-space model answers well enough to the three themes extracted from the results to support usage of the model in further studies applied to this specific area of research. A youth space which include all three themes would best answer to the many needs of the target group, although several obstacles must be overcome to reach this level. Furthermore there seems to exist a strong consensus about the importance of youth participation in planning processes, but a lack of knowledge concerning methods for reaching out to youths hinders this work.

Chinese American images in selected children's fiction for kindergarten through sixth grade

Chew, Laureen 01 January 1986 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate Chinese American images in selected children's fiction to determine whether or not data support the position of the Council on Interracial Books for Children, that the works of fiction studied tend to stereotype Chinese Americans. After reading the selected fifteen works of fiction, a criterion checklist was devised by the investigator to examine the behavior and lifestyle of Chinese Americans depicted in a variety of circumstances. validity of the criterion checklist was established by a panel of experts in the area of Chinese American studies. Inter-rater reliability was determined by two readers who utilized the criterion checklist to analyze the content of one lower elementary grade and one upper elementary grade work of fiction. Finally, the criterion checklist was used to analyze the fifteen works of fiction and draw conclusions related to the purpose of this study. The findings in this study do support the conclusions of the Council on Interracial Books for Children that this group of fiction portrays Chinese Americans in a one dimensional, stereotypic manner. In the checklist items related to environment, food, utensils, physical attributes, cultural celebrations, occupations, and recreation, Chinese Americans were portrayed as adhering to Chinese-specific characteristics. However, in cross-cultural and behavioral items, Chinese Americans were portrayed as desiring Western-specific characteristics. This tendency was especially prevalent in upper elementary grade fiction. A more integrative or multi-dimensional view of Chinese Americans appreciating, and able to function well in, both cultural contexts is disconcertingly absent. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made: 1. That teachers, librarians, and other school personnel who use this collection of books, supplement them with materials containing contemporary and realistic information about Chinese Americans. 2. That future writers of children's fiction dealing with Chinese Americans portray them in a multidimensional manner. 3. That curriculum writers of textbooks use a similar criterion checklist to offset the one-dimensionality of Chinese American images in existing children's literature. 4. That future writers of children's fiction on Chinese Americans utilize a criterion checklist such as the one in this study to assist them in developing multi-dimensional characters.

Perception of medical students about courses based on peer-assisted learning in five Peruvian universities

Soriano-Moreno, Anderson N., Delgado-Raygada, Jose E., Peralta, C. Ichiro, Serrano-Diaz, Estefania S., Canaza-Apaza, Jaquelin M., Toro-Huamanchumo, Carlos J. 01 January 2020 (has links)
Objectives: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is a supportive strategy in medical education. In Peru, this method has been implemented by few universities. However, there are no consistent studies evaluating their acceptability by medical students. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of medical students about PAL in five Peruvian universities. Results: A total of 79 medical students were included in the study. The mean age was 20.1 ± 1.9 years, 54% were female, and 87% were in the first 4 years of study. Most of the students were satisfied with classes and peer teachers. Similarly, most of the students agreed with the interest in developing teaching skills. It was also observed that 97% of students approved to implement PAL in medical education programs. / Revisión por pares

Policejní brutalita v knihách pro mladistvé / Police Brutality in Young Adult Literature

Svobodová, Markéta January 2021 (has links)
The aim of a master thesis called Police Brutality in Young Adult Literature is to analyze the portrayal of police brutality in three young adult books, whether it reflects the reality and thus conveys a credible picture of the situation to teenage readers. The three books used for the analysis are The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, Dear Martin by Nic Stone and Ghost Boys by Jewel Parker Rhodes. The analysis is based on three key areas and their analysis: the environment, language, and the act of police brutality in connection to racial stereotypes. To do so, the theoretical knowledge from the first three chapters of this thesis is applied. This part covers the concepts of police brutality and applies it to the case of the United States. It shows how the American police force has evolved and its current state, including the factors that influence police brutality in the United States. The analysis of individual books shows, that police brutality is portrayed in a credible way and it shows no distortion of reality for the purposes of fiction. This thesis also highlights the possibility of different interpretation of certain scenes, where the authors attempt to portray racial stereotypes and the interpretation depends on the readers' historical and cultural knowledge, which might result in a slight...

Ungdomsromanens liv : En komparativ undersökning av tilltal i fyra samtida ungdomsromaner

Eriksson, Evelina January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse the narrative address of four contemporary novels for young adults: Grim (2021) by Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Fula tjejer (2020) by Johanna Lindbäck, Lisa Bjärbo och Sara Ohlsson, Bergtagen (2020) by Camilla Sten, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (2019) by Holly Jackson. The method and main theory are based on Barbara Wall’s The Narrator’s Voice: The Dilemma of Children’s Fiction from 1991 and her use of narratological concepts of narrative perspective to determine if a book is written for children. The analysis shows how the four novels use unique and different approaches to address their implied young readers. The implied author can sometimes be shown through the narrator’s voice, depending on which narrative perspective the novels have. In the end, however, it is difficult to try to define the genre of young adult fiction in the same way that Wall defines the genre of children’s fiction. I argue that one would need to consider the unique conditions of young adult literature and its readers to try to define the genre even clearer.
