Color image processing problems in digital photography

Ferradans Ramonde, Sira 29 September 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we discuss three image processing topics: High Dynamic Range (HDR) image creation in scenes with motion, Tone Mapping (TM), and Demosaicking. The first part of this thesis focuses on the creation of HDR images using gradient fusion techniques, and proposes a method that deals with motion and avoids bleeding and ghost artifacts. In the second part, we tackle the TM problem, whose goal is to produce a low dynamic range picture from an HDR image that reproduces the sensation of an observer in the scene. We review the perceptual principles that we find important for TM purposes and present a new method that compares well to the state of the art. Finally, we propose a new method to reconstruct the three color channels of a picture taken with a Bayer filter. This problem is called Demosaicking and will be presented in the third part of this thesis.

The settlers in the Central Hill Country of Palestine during iron age I (ca1200-1000 BCE) : where did they come from and why did they move?

Russell, Irina 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the religious practices of the settlers in the central highlands of Palestine, during the pre-monarchic period (ca 1200-1000 BCE; the so-called ‘period of the Judges’), as revealed by archaeology (cultic artifacts and sites, as well as burial customs and practices). The religious practices of the settlers have been shown to reflect continuity with, and were practically indistinguishable from, those of the Late Bronze Canaanite cult, suggesting that the majority of the settlers were originally Canaanites, most probably from the coastal city-states (ie, the religious practices have been used as an ‘ethnic marker’). It has also been proposed that one of the motivating factors for the migration of people from the coastal region to the central highlands was a fairly dramatic climatic shift, one which resulted in the area becoming increasingly and significantly drier from the late 13th century BCE until about 900 BCE. / Thesis (M.A. (Biblical Archaelogy))

The general objective is to examine the possibility of the use of historical artifacts, at teaching activities, at graduation courses for teachers of Elementary School and of the first grades of High School. Artifact, at this work, is comprehended as objects, documents, monuments, images and other kinds of materials that make sense to the Human actions at the past and that represent what have been said and done at the Human history. At the construction of the theoretical-methodological way of the research we have based ourselves upon the ideas of the authors that are engaged at the teachers formation; at researchers adherents to the use of Mathematics History (MH) as a methodological resource, and at studies accomplished that elucidate the role of the artifacts at the history and as a mediatory element of learning. We defend the thesis that the utilization of historical artifacts at teaching activities enables the increasing of the knowledge, the development of competencies and essential abilities to the teacher acting, as well as interact at different areas of the knowledge, that provides a conception of formation where the teacher improves his learning, learning-doing and learning-being. We have adopted a qualitative research approach with a theoretical and pratic study disposition about the elements that contribute to the teachers works at the classroom, emphasizing the role of the Mathematics history at the teacher s formation and as a pedagogical resource at the mathematics classroom; the knowledge, the competencies and abilities of the historical artifacts as an integrative link between the different areas of the knowledge. As result, we emphasize that the proposition of using the MH, through learning activities, at the course of teacher graduation is relevant, because it allows the investigation of ideas that originate the knowledge generated at every social context, considering the contribution of the social and cultural, political and economical aspects at this construction, making easy the dialog among the areas and inside of each one The historical artifact represents a research source that can be deciphered, comprehended, questioned, extracting from it information about knowledge of the past, trace and vestiges of the culture when it was created, consisting of a testimony of a period. These aspects grant to it consideration to be explored as a mediatory element of the learning. The artifacts incorporated at teaching activities of the graduation courses for teachers promote changes on the view about the Mathematics teaching, in view of to privilege the active participation of the student at the construction of his knowledge, at the reflection about the action that has been accomplished, promoting stimulus so the teachers can create their own artifacts, and offer, either, traces linking the Mathematics with others knowledge areas.

Eat Your Heart Out: Framing Design, Experience, Street Foods, and Globalization

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Eat Your Heart Out is a visually rich qualitative ethnic food research that examines consumption, production, and distribution practices transnationally. Through the example of Mumbai’s street foods, the study aims to discover how design participates in fashioning the street food experiences locally and globally. Food is an important cultural artifact in the world. However, past research in design suggests that the discipline has mainly focused on food as a catalyst for creativity and imagination or as a tool to examine materialistic, economical, sensorial, and emotional connections. Studying the user-focused involvement in the creation of food artifacts and focusing on cultural, global, and historical aspects of that participation are important to address the gaps in the knowledge required to solve increasingly “wicked problems” (Buchanan, 1992; Rittel, 1971). To achieve this goal, Eat Your Heart Out implemented a comparative practice-based study of the Indian street foods in Mumbai and Phoenix to examine consumption, production, and distribution practices at both places. The methodological design was highly multi-disciplinary in nature and included rapid ethnographic assessment, interviews, visual research, and a generative method of co-creation. The study revealed that street foods as cultural artifacts were deeply rooted in specific traditional values specific to the context, which significantly influenced personal and communal consumption, production, and distribution practices of Indian street foods in Mumbai and Phoenix. The values of standardization, formality, and higher food regulation practices limited the diversity and radically transformed the central values of Mumbai’s street foods when the foods re-territorialized in Phoenix. This resulted in lowering the consumption. Eat Your Heart Out presents cultural and practical insights into the interactions between contexts, artifacts, practices, and participants. Eat Your Heart Out recommends new frameworks of correlation for various consumption and production practices and suggests how street food artifacts alter when they move across cultures. Such knowledge can be valuable for similar ethnic food culture studies and the development of innovative research tools incorporating transnational and multidisciplinary methods in the future. On a broader scope, Eat Your Heart Out provides a unique opportunity to study a culture that has not been examined by scholars much in the past. It also focuses on gaining knowledge about ethnic culinary practices of Indian immigrants in the United States and encouraging enhanced cross-cultural acceptance. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Design, Environment and the Arts 2018

Novel Materials, Grid Design Rule, and Characterization Methods for Multi-Junction Solar Cells

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation addresses challenges pertaining to multi-junction (MJ) solar cells from material development to device design and characterization. Firstly, among the various methods to improve the energy conversion efficiency of MJ solar cells using, a novel approach proposed recently is to use II-VI (MgZnCd)(SeTe) and III-V (AlGaIn)(AsSb) semiconductors lattice-matched on GaSb or InAs substrates for current-matched subcells with minimal defect densities. CdSe/CdTe superlattices are proposed as a potential candidate for a subcell in the MJ solar cell designs using this material system, and therefore the material properties of the superlattices are studied. The high structural qualities of the superlattices are obtained from high resolution X-ray diffraction measurements and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images. The effective bandgap energies of the superlattices obtained from the photoluminescence (PL) measurements vary with the layer thicknesses, and are smaller than the bandgap energies of either the constituent material. Furthermore, The PL peak position measured at the steady state exhibits a blue shift that increases with the excess carrier concentration. These results confirm a strong type-II band edge alignment between CdSe and CdTe. The valence band offset between unstrained CdSe and CdTe is determined as 0.63 eV±0.06 eV by fitting the measured PL peak positions using the Kronig-Penney model. The blue shift in PL peak position is found to be primarily caused by the band bending effect based on self-consistent solutions of the Schrödinger and Poisson equations. Secondly, the design of the contact grid layout is studied to maximize the power output and energy conversion efficiency for concentrator solar cells. Because the conventional minimum power loss method used for the contact design is not accurate in determining the series resistance loss, a method of using a distributed series resistance model to maximize the power output is proposed for the contact design. It is found that the junction recombination loss in addition to the series resistance loss and shadowing loss can significantly affect the contact layout. The optimal finger spacing and maximum efficiency calculated by the two methods are close, and the differences are dependent on the series resistance and saturation currents of solar cells. Lastly, the accurate measurements of external quantum efficiency (EQE) are important for the design and development of MJ solar cells. However, the electrical and optical couplings between the subcells have caused EQE measurement artifacts. In order to interpret the measurement artifacts, DC and small signal models are built for the bias condition and the scan of chopped monochromatic light in the EQE measurements. Characterization methods are developed for the device parameters used in the models. The EQE measurement artifacts are found to be caused by the shunt and luminescence coupling effects, and can be minimized using proper voltage and light biases. Novel measurement methods using a pulse voltage bias or a pulse light bias are invented to eliminate the EQE measurement artifacts. These measurement methods are nondestructive and easy to implement. The pulse voltage bias or pulse light bias is superimposed on the conventional DC voltage and light biases, in order to control the operating points of the subcells and counterbalance the effects of shunt and luminescence coupling. The methods are demonstrated for the first time to effectively eliminate the measurement artifacts. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2012

This is a descriptive study that investigates the structure and functioning of the educational website Portal do Professor section Espaço da Aula, taking as their units of analysis the tool for creating lesson plans (Criar Aula) and the resulting pages of the work of creating lesson plans (available at Sugestões de Aula). No. of bitstreams: 1 CAPITULO 1.pdf: 70697 bytes, checksum: eca18cc575d3c9b5fb2721a6347d7ad6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-09-04 / The productive chain of the construction industry is responsible for many positive and negative impacts on the built environment. One of the negative impacts refers to the high amount of waste produced, which can be reduced through the industrialization of construction, that is, through the reduction of services at construction sites and transferring them to the factories. In this sense, the use of prefabricated structures may reduce the production of waste arising from the implementation phase of structures, such as molds and buttresses. However, if the production of the prefabricated elements in plants is not properly planned, the problems of waste production can be transferred from construction site for the industry environment. This fact was observed in some industries of artifacts and pre-molded concrete. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology for solid waste management through the integration of the methodologies of environmental management system, cleaner production and suggestion already published of project management of construction waste envisaged by Resolution nº 307 Conama and applies this methodology in an industry artifacts and pre-cast concrete. For this, two processes of an industry of Goiânia were selected, which served as a pilot in the implementation of model solid waste management proposed. By implementing this model, it was possible to quantify the waste produced in the processes studied, as well as make significant improvements in its characterization, segregation, packaging, transportation and disposal through the implementation of opportunities for cleaner production highlighted. Moreover, mechanisms were created for the own employees were responsible for maintaining the proposed activities. As result of this study, a database about the chain of waste in the processes studied was produced, which can be used in future for the proposition of other opportunities for cleaner production in industry studied. Still, the methodology of waste management proposal can serve as a model for replication in other industries of artifacts and pre-cast concrete / A cadeia produtiva da indústria da construção é responsável por diversos impactos positivos e negativos no ambiente construído.

The objective is analyze the deposition system of the archaeological vestiges and characterizing the black earth of indian and ceramic artifacts related to these sites. The methodology process adopted is based on a morphological, mineralogical and chemical analysis of soil samples, sediments and ceramic traces. The soils of the region are classified as immature profiles, formed on Alter do Chao formation, the mineralogy is represented by quartz, kaolinite, hematite, gibbsite and goethite, the sediments come from alluvial deposits that constitute a clay-sandy material, mineralogically composed by 2: 1 clay, quartz and iron oxides. The black soil can reach 40 to 220 cm depth, with a sandy granulometry for Pontão site and a sandy-clay for Santa Helena site, consisting of quartz and kaolinite and high proportions of Ti, Zr, Ag and Mn. Ceramics artifacts are commonly associated as pre colonial period: Incisal Edge Tradition an the Saracá regional Tradition, being mineralogically constituted by quartz, kaolinite, smithite, illite, gibbsite, hematite, feldspar, phosphates, and presents additional seasonings to the blend of cauixi, cariape and ceramics shards, which are distinguished only by the proportion of this constituents for each of the studied sites. Based on the analyzes of ceramic data is possible to infer two places as being the material provider: the first, associated to the immature profiles is formed on the cretaceous deposits and the second, associated to the sediments is coming from the alluvial deposits present in the lakes of the region, which currently provides primary resources for the manufacture of tiles and bricks. For questioning about the origin of the resource areas and manufacturing of the artifacts from the studied sites, we can correlate that the ceramics were produced locally with the raw material available in the region.

The methodology used in this paper is the field work conceded in the Tapi'itãwa village, located in the territory of Urubu Branco MT, with records in the field’s diary, photographic and audiovisual. Tapirapé has its roots on the Tupi language, and its territory is located in the northeastern state of Mato Grosso. The research was based on Wagley Charles (1988), Baldus Hebert (1972) and Els Lagrou (2007) works as the main theoretical references to produce this ethnography. The body painting here is understood as the reasons executed on the bodies of people, and these reasons are present both in the bodies of people, but also in the masks, bowls and other artifacts produced by the Tapirapé. The Shaman is the chief warrior and he has the power of healing, of disease, and death. In addition, the shaman is responsible for protecting the village. Body painting as artifacts and shamanism operate in the bodies among Tapirapé. Finally, I believe in the Shaman as a demiurge as it connects the visible and invisible to grasp and pass on the knowledge to the Tapirapé. Therefore, if the Shaman is responsible for bringing this knowledge, the school appears as an organization that contributes to the preservation and transmission of knowledge. Nonetheless, the school is not exempt of critics among the Tapirapé. Also, the insertion of artifacts in museums generates debate on how to place and how to expose these artifacts. The image is one of the components of this ethnography, as well as the photographs in this paper, and of course the shamanism and the rituals that also denote to images. Furthermore, this research contains two videos about Tapirapé body painting and shamanism.

Palast der Republik, by the photographer Christoph Rokitta, is an independent photobook published in 2013 in Berlin. In Palast der Republik different semiotic resources interact with one another, in order to reveal a new experience about the demolition process of the homonymous building. In opposition to the trivial notion of icon as sign that stands for its object in a relation of similarity, we are going to analyze the book as an icon whose main feature is the possibility of discovering new information about its object through its manipulation. This specific feature is called operation criteria of iconicity. Our aim is to describe and analyze the relations between semiotic resources in this photobook, by exploring not only the operational criterion of iconicity, but also the roles of diagrams in reasoning, and how models function models as epistemic artifacts. Therefore, it will be presented here how semiotic resources with different morphological features in the photobook interact in order to create a diagrammatic epistemic artifact of its object: the demolition of the Palast der Republik.
