Gricean Maxims and ASD Individuals on TV : A pragmatic analysis of individuals with ASD and their sensitivity to Gricean MaximsMikha, Alice Ann January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examine the way the flouting of the Gricean maxims is used to portray a fictional character with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study analyzes a character named Sam Gardner from the television series Atypical. The study is based on written transcripts from six episodes of the TV series and was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively. The methodology of the study involved transcribing, counting, and analyzing the flouts used by Sam in these six episodes. The results suggest that Sam flouts all the maxims but flouts the maxim of relation most, with a total of 22 flouts, which can cause a problem in communication. Sam does not follow the maxim of relation as he tends to abruptly change the conversational topic to something else. In many cases, he changes the topic to something he is interested in, which is Antarctica and penguins. The second most dominant maxim in all six episodes to be flouted was the maxim of quantity, with a total of 15 flouts, as he gave either too much or too little information to the listener. The results of Sam’s limited pragmatic abilities fall into agreement with Fein’s (2010) claim that ASD individuals have pragmatic language deficits as they struggle to stay on topic and incorporate irrelevant details in conversations. This study further discusses how analyzing neurodivergent characters’ speech patterns can benefit teachers and students in a pedagogical setting.

Proposta de modelo de indicadores de qualidade para o atendimento oferecido aos indivíduos autistas na cidade de São Paulo / A model of quality indicators for the service provided to subjects with autism in the city of São PauloNetrval, Danielle Azarias Defense 08 May 2014 (has links)
The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) increased dramatically in the whole world and it leaded to an increase in the discussions about the public policies regarding this population. In the State of São Paulo these discussions were started with a movement by families of children with ASD in 2000. In 2012 Brazil adopted the National Policy of Protection of the Rights of Persons with ASD and people with ASD were considered as having a disability and therefore with all the rights attributed to them. Considering the issues regarding the intervention services provided to persons with ASD, the present research aimed to determine the profile of the population with ASD receiving health and educational services and to propose a model of quality indicators regarding the speech-language pathology provided to this population in the city of São Paulo. The study was divided in three moments: construction of the questionnaire called \"Questionnaire to the identification of quality indicators of the intervention with persons with ASD\"; identification of the services to be studied and data gathering. Building the questionnaire started with the selection of the quality indicators for processes and results, based on the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Following that, a questionnaire with 23 objective questions was proposed. Of these questions, just 13 were mandatory and allowed the identification of data about the quality indicators. The initial plan was to perform a longitudinal study in collaboration with the State Health Secretariat, but the chief office vetoed the research and therefore the study was limited to just one moment of data gathering using a net-web field-work. The initial study group included 62 services but just 25 of them agreed to participate in the study. Data was obtained during interviews with the chairs and/or speech-language pathologists (SLP) of each service, always conducted after an initial interview where the researcher informed the participants about the research\'s purpose and methods. Data obtained was organized on a spread-sheet and underwent statistical descriptive and cluster analysis. Results indicated a larger number of private schools (regular schools with inclusion policy and special schools) and larger availability of services destined to children. The total of persons with ASD involved in the study is 854 with a larger number of children with diagnosis of autism. Speech-language services are available in 64% of the sample with an average of 1 SLP in each service, providing one weekly therapy session to an average of 18 persons with ASD. Most of the services informed that the length of the SLP treatment undetermined. In what regards to the rotation of subjects, the largest proportion of them undergo some interruption on the treatment but the smallest one have some re-insertion in the intervention service. The cluster analysis considered 7 relevant variables, resulting in 3 groups (G1, G2 and not-classified). Generally, G1 presented largest proportions of subjects referred to speech-language therapy; of number of SLPs, of subjects with diagnosis of autism and of autism associated to other disorder. It can be concluded that the present research allowed the determination of the profile of the services provided to persons with ASD and of their clients. It also identified the first important issues to the management of speech-language therapy services provided to persons with ASD

Objective: to compare the Autistic Trait Scale (ATA), before and after the cochlear implant in deaf children with autistic traits. Methodology: We included children 3 years old and above both sexes, with diagnosis of severe and profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in the pre-lingual period, with indication of cochlear implant and autistic traits (23 points or more in the ATA scale). The application of the scale was performed in two moments: before the adaptation of the cochlear implant and after one year of use of the cochlear implant. The control group was made up of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) whose parents answered a questionnaire at the initial time of the research and a year later. Another group, composed of deaf children under evaluation in the Cochlear Implant Outpatient Clinic, was submeted to the application of the ATA scale was in a single moment. The patients in the control group composed of ASD children and the group of deaf children with autistic traits underwent an application of the non-verbal test of SON-R 2½-7 [a] Intelligence. The established exclusion criteria were children with cerebral palsy, neurological diseases, genetic syndromes diagnosed or under investigation. Results: individuals with hearing impairment score low, out of court scores for ASD. Auditory defects with autistic traits score 37 before and 34 after one year of IC do not present statistical significance. Conclusion: The findings at the conclusion did not show statistical difference in the pre and post cochlear implant evaluation, but there were changes in the aspects: effective use of the cochlear implant; attention, imitation of the other, look as an to llouving attempt to establish dialogue, better relationship with the other not linked to a proper dialogue, showed the need for what is desired and improved family interaction

Previous issue date: 2009-05-18 / Based on a literature review related to autism; some approaches in relation to clinical care of this disorder are performed. These aim to demonstrate the efficacy of the psychoanalytical method and praxis by means of the analysis of a five-year old boy. The emotional experiences and the relationship model with the analyst staying, the setting establishment, the therapeutical come and back, the constancy, presence and absence have helped in the development of new relationship, providing him a better interaction with his family and school, and the development of his subjectivation. The infant- psychoanalytical method was adequate to reach this purpose.

Previous issue date: 2008-12-05 / Autism is a neuropsychiatric disorder that develops during early childhood and is part of a group of psychiatric conditions denominated Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). Diagnosis is clinical, mainly based on the presence of social interaction disorders, restricted interests, stereotyped behavior and communication disorders. Communication is an important aspect of the disease as it is invariably present in autism. Psychiatric alterations of speech and language are commoner in autistic families, thus suggesting a broad phenotype and possible genetic anticipation in autism. This study aimed at analyzing the oral language and the speech of parents of autistic and control individuals and to correlate the results to a possible broad phenotype and genetic anticipation in autism. Eighteen couples, mothers and fathers, of autistic patients were investigated. A control group was composed of nine men and nine women, paired by age and education. The participants were submitted to a clinical evaluation of speech and language and to the Test of Language Competence (TLC-E). The results showed a poorer performance by the parents of autistic patients when compared to the controls in respect to language but not to speech. The presence of alterations in oral language in couples with autistic children supports the hypothesis of a broad phenotype of this disease and of the existence of genetic anticipation in autism.

Previous issue date: 2013-02-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Introduction: The Global Developmental Disorders (GDD) are characterized by impaired
social interaction, by stereotyped and repetitive use of language and the presence of
repetitive behaviors with restricted interests (BOSA C, Gomes VF, 2004), and has indicated
speech therapy treatment. Objective: Analyze the scientific literature on clinical speech
therapy methods used in GDD patients treatments from systematic literature review.
Methods: Systematic review of literature from exploratory character. Secondary study
subsidized by previous realized studies. 46 articles were selected, published between 2000
and 2011 using search strategy in databases EMBASE, LILACS, PUBMED and SciELO, and
categorized according to the proposed therapies for the treatment of GDD and their levels.
Results: From the 46 selected articles, there was predictable diversity of proposals regarding
the analyzed variables. From the results it can be concluded that there are several proposals
for the speech therapy of GDD; associated with epistemological, methodological and cultural
diversity that characterizes the study theme approach, nationally and internationally. The
selected studies had low levels of evidence, as the patients were mostly children,
demonstrating a concern for early intervention, the therapy length ranged, but mostly of them
were realized around 6 months to 1 year. The systematic review showed itself the method
that can contribute to the speech therapy, despite the difficulties founded on this and other
studies. Conclusion: Regardless of the therapeutic approach used to treat the GDD, it is
important to recognize that, in most of analyzed publications, the researchers report the
clinical evolution of these patients, proving the importance of speech therapy, individual or
Objetivo: Analisar a produção
abordagem do tema; nacional e internacionalmente.

Previous issue date: 2011-07-14 / Early identification of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs) is
important for a better prognosis on affected children. Therefore, the position
stood by nurses performing in the primary health care, is relevant to identify the
characteristic signs of these disorders. The objectives of this study were to
subsidize the nurses´ knowledge by empowering them to detect earlier the
Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and to verify this empowerment
repercussion into their performance on surveillance of childhood development.
Afterwards, to evaluate the program adjustment into this empowerment,
according to the perception of these nurses intervention-participants. Method:
An almost-experimental outline featured by a teaching intervention was used.
The participants were divided according to their availability into two groups: an
experimental group (EG received intervention), and a control group (CG did not
receive the intervention). The casuistic comprised 27 nurses from the Primary
Health Care Units (PHCUs), in a municipality of São Paulo state, with
attendance in Puericulture. Data collection was made by semi-structured
interview, during three distinctive phases: pre-intervention, post-intervention and
follow-up. During the pre-intervention and follow-up phases, data were also
collected from the children’s parents (n=83 and 79, respectively). Results:
Data analysis allowed to observe that after participating the course, the nurses
of the EG demonstrated to have acquired new knowledge on the theme;
otherwise, the nurses of the CG did not. However, significant changes on these
nurses´ acting regarding the surveillance of the children´s development were
not observed. It is important to consider the influence of the organizational
framework in changing the process of health assistance model. Regarding the
empowerment program, the nurses, were satisfied in relation to all assessed
aspects, suggesting to spread this empowerment to other professionals.
Conclusions: The results allowed to conclude that the course program was
feasible, and the implemented empowerment has provided important
contributions on the surveillance of the children´s development, and early
detection of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders. Moreover, further research should be carried out to optimize some action implementation aiming to identify
these disorders and to support a better future for these children and their family.
ensino.
do desenvolvimento infantil.
profissionais. Conclusões: Os resultados permitem concluir que o programa
do curso demonstra ser adequado e a capacitação implementada traz
desenvolvimento infantil e detecção precoce dos Transtornos Invasivos do
Desenvolvimento.
