Personliga flöden & digitala minnessaker : En kvalitativ studie av estetik och värde i digitala samlingar på Instagram / Personal feeds and digital keepsakes : A qualitative study of aesthetics and value in digital collections on Instagram

Dahlberg, Caroline January 2021 (has links)
This qualitative study was carried out using method combination of survey, interview and compositional interpretation of digital collections on Instagram. The study investigates digital collections and what governs Instagram-users’ collecting of digital artifacts. With the collected material, readings of gestalt psychology, Bourdieu’s theory of capital, social media and digital collections the study aimed to contribute to our understanding of why and how we collect digitally as well as how it affects the graphic design-, advertising- and communication industry. The study came to the conclusion that public and private collections often do not have aesthetically oriented connections, but that Instagram-users have these reasonings close to heart while building their public digital collection. These aesthetically oriented thoughts are more present in the public feed than in the hidden feed.

Beaupré, Aurélie 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the risk perception of young adults in Montreal concerning online social networks. We wish to understand to what extent their perception of the risks of lateral and vertical surveillance influences their practice. Within the past few years, online social networks have imposed themselves among the most used platforms on the Internet. Despite the media coverage of many whistleblowers regarding the risks imposed on privacy by information and communication technologies, this new reality seems to be generally accepted. This trivialization of generalized technological surveillance is a fear for many researchers and specialists. As Sofsky (2011, p. 19) explains: “Neither the absence of dispute, nor the weakness of the defenses implemented imply that the risk is lower”. We hypothesize that the perception of supervisory risks of these young adults generally has little influence on their practice. The conduct of twelve semi-structured interviews with young adults aged between 20 and 30 from Montreal will allow us to verify our hypothesis. A phenomenological analysis of the testimonies of our informants gave rise to a distinct typology of three user groups participating in online social networks: vigilant users, indifferent users, and abnegators. The results of the analysis ultimately force us to review our initial hypothesis and to consider that, after all, the perception of certain risks influences the practice of the individuals interviewed.

I don't want to see your perfect breakfast while sitting in my armchair with crumbs on my chest : Research of visual material and the own experience on Instagram through autoetnography and critical analysis

Filipsson, Elin January 2020 (has links)

Disinformation in a Time of War : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Russian Disinformation Strategies During the Russo-Ukrainian War of 2022

de Boer, Laura January 2023 (has links)
This paper examines Russian broadcast media's disinformation strategies after the Ukraine invasion in 2022. In the past decade, Russian disinformation has been recognized by scholars and policymakers as a danger to European security and order. And it has made it harder for Europeans to access reliable and factual information. However, much research thus far has been conducted when the war in Ukraine was different in proportion, and where disinformation functioned as the foundation for small-scale military action. Now that the war has evolved, disinformation strategies have evolved with it.  In this paper, I applied Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to twenty articles from three internationally oriented Russian broadcasters: RT, Sputnik, and TASS. This revealed two major themes in disinformation narratives: positive Self-representation and negative Other-representation. I demonstrate in this research that Russian disinformation is no longer used to hide Russia’s direct involvement in Ukraine, but that it is used to present justifications for the invasion and further military actions.  Moreover, the research illustrates that the relationship between information warfare and conventional warfare is symbiotic and that contemporary disinformation strategies have been adjusted so that they can benefit from the current circumstances in Ukraine. Ultimately, in this research, I determine that Russian disinformation strategies have evolved since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and are now altered to align with the Kremlin’s aggressive military tactics.

Fighting Stereotypes and Empowering Roma Youth through Participatory Film : A Case Study Based on a Participatory Film Project Conducted in the Roma Community in Glasgow, Scotland

Dlugosz, Katarzyna January 2024 (has links)
The Roma community has long been subjected to negative stereotypes and misrepresentations in the public sphere, leading to discrimination and prejudice. Roma youth in Glasgow, Scotland, supported by the Roma-led organisation Romano Lav, have taken an active role in challenging these negative portrayals through a participatory film project. One of the aims of this research is to explore how young Roma filmmakers are utilising cinematic storytelling to challenge harmful stereotyping of their community. The other one is to investigate the impact of participatory video projects on the film creators and their community. The study fits within the field of Communication for Development by addressing the transformative and empowering aspect of a film project. It aims to fill a gap in knowledge regarding self-representations of Roma and the role of participatory video in their community accounting for cultural specificity. It also adds an insight into the Romani youth’s attitudes and values, contributing this way to a broader knowledge of Scottish Roma while suggesting solutions for social change. By employing qualitative research methodologies, critical visual analysis and interviews, the study seeks to understand the experiences, perspectives, and motivations of the teenagers involved in the project. It is grounded in Paolo Freire’s theories linking participation and empowerment and Stuart Hall’s constructivist approach to representation. The analysis finds that the Roma youth use personal narratives, cultural traditions, and everyday experiences to construct new representations that challenge stereotypes. Moreover, it highlights the transformative impact of participatory video on the empowerment of the participants, its influence on strengthening communal identity and social bonds, and the film’s educational role in building a more equitable society. This study found that participatory video harnesses great potential for Roma self-representation and empowerment.

Carignan, Rosalie 08 1900 (has links)
This study analyzes the intersections between social struggles and the horror films of the last decade. First, it examines the emergence of the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements within the socio-historical landscape of the 2010s, presenting precursor events such as the 1992 Los Angeles riot and Donald Trump's 2017 presidential election before unpacking the movements' specific politics. Next, the study examines the significance of the horror subgenres – most notably the slasher, rape-revenge and Black horror films – in the context of cultural studies, focusing in particular on the writings of Carol J. Clover, Kevin Wynter and Robin R. Means Coleman. The essay then revisits elements of the socio-historical contexts and the cultural study writings in the analysis of the nine feature films making up the corpus, namely Get Out (Jordan Peele, 2017), Revenge (Coralie Fargeat, 2017), Cam (Daniel Goldhaber, 2018), The Perfection (Richard Shepard, 2019), His House (Remi Weekes, 2020), Bad Hair (Justin Simien, 2020), Candyman (Nia DaCosta, 2021), Scream (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, 2022) and Master (Mariama Diallo, 2022), in order to highlight the influence that the politics of Black Lives Matter and #MeToo have had on the aesthetic and narrative treatment of "race" relations, sexual violence and social justice.

Carrier-Corbeil, Marie 08 1900 (has links)
The Lives of Caravaggio, published by Giovanni Baglione, Gian Pietro Bellori, Guilio Mancini and Francesco Suninno, had considerable influence on the reception of the artist’s oeuvre. Often considered to be primary sources, these literary works express stylistic criticism and stage historical facts through fiction. This master’s thesis situates Caravaggio’s myth in the context of Italian literary production and its ancient and contemporary heritage. The stereotypes that define the painter are perceived in their changes and confronted with the perception of their violence and eroticism by modern historiography and popular culture, particularly in Derek Jarman’s movie Caravaggio (1986). Islam in Contemporary Czech Discourse: perception and representation of "the other"

Franioková, Tereza January 2013 (has links)
Islam and its believers who reside in the Czech Republic are the main theme of this master thesis. My research focuses, first of all, on the Muslim presence in the country over the last ten years. Secondly, I aim to present Islam through the Czech media which is rather unexplored field till today. The text is divided in two parts: a theoretical one and a practical one. The first mentioned deals with the following topics: religiosity in the Czech Republic, history of Islam in the country (especially in Prague and in Brno), Muslims residing in the Czech Republic, image of Islam in the literature and widely debated Muslim question in Europe. The second part of the text is more pragmatic and it is exactly in this part that I lead an analysis of several blogs and Facebook pages emerged from a preliminary research on the Internet. Besides the Internet that is my source number one, I place emphasis also on other Czech mass media such as book market, audiovisual productions or press.
