[en] PORTUGUESE AS SECOND LANGUAGE FOR THE DEAF (PSLD): THE USE OF THE RELATIVE PRONOUN QUE(THAT/WHERE) IN ACADEMIC WRITING / [pt] PORTUGUÊS COMO SEGUNDA LÍNGUA PARA SURDOS (PL2S): O EMPREGO DO PRONOME RELATIVO QUE EM TEXTOS ACADÊMICOS

DANIELLE COELHO LINS 19 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The present research focuses on the use of the relative pronoun que (that/where) in the production of the college students of the Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos (INES). Mainly, this paper proposes a workshop based on the referred pronoun in the academic writing of both deaf and listeners, college students of the Institute. In order to do so, the bilingual approach is used and the written Portuguese functions as the second language whereas the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) functions as the first. Based on the written production of post graduation students of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica from Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), three syntactic functions of the relative pronoun que (that) are selected for analysis, namely, subject, direct object and adjunct. Basically, there is general rise in the production of the pronoun for the three suggested functions. Nonetheless, there is reduction for the direct object and the adjunct in the exercise in which students may put sentences together and for the adjunct in the exercise of completing sentences. The results are properly justified what proves the efficiency of the workshop for both deaf and listeners.

[en] CODE-SWITCHING: MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES / [pt] CODE-SWITCHING: PERSPECTIVAS MULTIDISCIPLINARES

RENATA SOBRINO PORTO 13 December 2006 (has links)
[en] This dissertation investigates the linguistic phenomenon referred to as codeswitching in languages in contact´s literature. Code-switching consists of the alternate use of two or more codes by bilinguals or multilinguals in the same verbal interaction. The study of this discursive practice in several languages has obtained increasing interest in the last three decades. Two main approaches prevail: socio-pragmatic and grammatical-syntactic. Whilst the first approach focuses on the socio-discursive aspects of individual production through the categorization, quantification and analysis of codeswitching pragmatic functions and socio-psychological motivations; the second one intends to formulate formal constraints and patterns of occurrence of this linguistic behavior. The present work aims at presenting a bibliographic systematization and evaluation of the international literature in code- switching through the presentation and characterization of its major research lines, emphasizing the reference works and the directions provided by each approach. The need for the structured presentation of the several aspects of code-switching found in the literature in languages in contact is due to the fact that research on this phenomenon is incipient in Brazil and the access to this material is still restricted. This research, therefore, seeks to fill this gap and make the literature in code-switching accessible to the Brazilian academy.

[en] BILINGUALITY MEASUREMENT: A PROPOSE / [pt] MEDIDAS DE BILINGUALIDADE: UMA PROPOSTA

ANA CLAUDIA PETERS SALGADO 29 December 2008 (has links)
[en] This study proposes a methodology to evaluate degrees of bilinguality. The objective is to quantify the concept bilinguality. Considering that the bilingual behavior should not be taken as one`s universalist or essentialist aspect, objective knowledge of statistics and probability, and formal methodology of data gathering, for example, do not cope with the subjective and contextual aspects of the bilingual manifestations. The orthodoxy and inflexibility of the available methodologies can not apprehend such a fluid concept as bilinguality. The propose of this study is to present Fuzzy Logic as a possible tool to measure bilinguality for it takes into account the observer/researcher`s individual perceptions and cultural experience for defining what constitutes the observed phenomenon. The truth of any affirmation is a matter of gradation. The methodology used was: 1) recording and transcription of interviews with bilingual individuals; 2) selection of life story narratives inside these interviews; 3) identification of the relevant variables for the analysis; 4) analysis of bilinguality using Fuzzy Logic Toolbox in MATLAB. The bilinguality of the individuals is analyzed in real everyday life situations, in contexts such as: familiar, social and professional. An important aspect to be considered is that, due to the fluidity of bilinguality, different factors and multiple variables compete to set up an analysis of bilingualism manifestations. Thus, we could prove mathematically, using fuzzy logic, what we might previously know based on our life experience: one individual presents different degrees of bilinguality, depending on the moment of their life they are.

[en] ROLE-PLAYING GAME AS A PEDAGOGICAL PROPOSAL FOR THE CO-CONSTRUCTION OF STORIES IN THE CONTEXT OF DEAFNESS / [pt] O ROLE-PLAYING GAME COMO PROPOSTA PEDAGÓGICA DE CO-CONSTRUÇÃO DE HISTÓRIAS NO CONTEXTO DA SURDEZ

PRISCILA STAROSKY 24 October 2012 (has links)
[en] This study consists in presenting and discussing the development and implementation of a pedagogical proposal for the co-construction of stories by means of the Role-playing game (RPG) in a Speech Therapy (Phonoaudiology) context of literacy of deaf people, following a bilingual orientation. The researcher experienced the practice of RPG and developed an adapted proposal of the game for bilingual deaf adolescents. Moreover, the researcher analyses the co-construction of narratives, in an interactional perspective, during the multiparticipation dynamics of the game itself. The theoretical bases of the study are interdisciplinary and founded on Narrative Theory, Interactional Sociolinguistics, Vygotskyian Sociointeractionism and Multiliteracy Practices in the context of deafness. The research, which was developed in the Ambulatory of Deafness of the Speech Therapy Course at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, is a qualitative, participant, longitudinal exploratory study. The data was generated in six sessions in which the RPG was implemented, with the participation of four deaf adolescents and a deaf teacher (as players), a researcher on RPG and Education (as master of the game), the researcher (as assistant of the game) and an interpreter of Libras (Brazilian Sign Language). The corpus is constituted of transcription segments of face-to-face interactions among the deaf players and their mediators (master, assistant and interpreter) during the game sessions, both in Libras and in Portuguese. The results point out that the interaction and multisemiotic modes of a specific linguistic-discursive practice such as the RPG are intended for the joint creation and co-authorship of fictional narratives. From the theoretical point of view of Narrative Theory, it can be noticed that the narratives co-constructed during the game moves have, at the same time, a relationship both of proximity and of opposition to the labovian canonical structure. The activities of telling stories involve the retelling and creation of narrative scenes, in small and big narratives. The instantaneous creation of action scenes and of a parallel imaginary world in space and time, emerging from the simulation based on the story setting, makes the RPG bring to birth small fictional narratives that intersect and create coherence in the construction of a big narrative. From the methodological point of view, it can be seen that the RPG, specially the one developed for a group of deaf adolescents, promoted the interaction among these adolescents, the teacher and their mediators, with relevant literacy practices involving multiple semioses, such as: the linguistic, the visual, the spatial, the gestual and the tact-sinestesic. Therefore, the hypermediatic features of the game were fundamental for engaging the adolescents into the activity. The interactivity, essential to the game, the use of different frames, the positionings, the use of contextualization cues and of code-switching turned the RPG practice into an experience in which deaf learners could deal with new forms of telling stories. This is fundamental in the process of meaning construction and language development of deaf learners in a bilingual context.

[en] WRITING IN SOMEONE ELSE’S LANGUAGE: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN POETRY AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES / [pt] ESCREVENDO NA LÍNGUA DO OUTRO: A RELAÇÃO DA NOVÍSSIMA POESIA BRASILEIRA COM LÍNGUAS ESTRANGEIRAS

LUIZA SPOSITO VILELA 14 November 2013 (has links)
[en] This thesis is an examination of the writings of young Brazilian poets (debuting since 2000) who use other languages than their native Portuguese in their poems, in order to understand what motivates part of a generation to write in such a fashion, and what this could mean in terms of Brazil’s artistic interaction with other cultures in a contemporary framework. Two avant-garde movements that have incorporated foreign languages into Brazilian literature and music in the past will be examined – antropofagia and tropicália. Though they share a number of features with the new bilingual poetry being written today, to a greater or lesser extent these movements were concerned with issues of national identity that are no longer relevant to Brazilian poets today. The poems chosen for analysis, by 11 different authors, will be read in connection with texts and concepts from Cultural Studies and French Post-Structuralism, and the thesis draws on such authors as Silviano Santiago, Eneida Maria de Souza, Alberto Fuguet, Charles Perrone, Gilles Deleuze, Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida, among others. Finally, a comparative analysis will be carried out between the Brazilian case and Spanglish literature in the United States. The overall intention of the study is to demonstrate that the new generation of Brazilian poets, in their choice of themes and formats, are driven by criteria of affinity rather than of nationality.

[en] DEAFNESS, FAMILY AND PROFESSIONAL MEDIATION: KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT AND AGENCY CO-CONSTRUCTION AMONG GROUP PARTICIPANTS / [pt] SURDEZ, FAMÍLIA E MEDIAÇÃO PROFISSIONAL: GRUPO FOCAL NA COCONSTRUÇÃO DE CONHECIMENTOS E AGENTIVIDADE

CAROLINA MAGALHAES DE PINHO FERREIRA 15 January 2015 (has links)
[en] The focus of this study is the speech professional mediation among a group of family members of deaf children and adolescents who are being treated at a Bilingual Clinic for Deaf Individuals, that belongs to the Speech Therapy Course of UFRJ. The purpose of this investigation is to show how mothers narrate experiencies of their interaction with their deaf children, during the interactional co-construction activity, and how the speech therapist tries to raise awareness among family members regarding the communication process, as well as generate reflection among them, providing for both agency and empowerment. The theoretical framework articulates macro and micro levels in interface with health and education policies, taking into consideration the discussion of professional discourse in the deafness field, together with the theoretical and methodological framework of narrative, and interaction analysis, through analytical tools, in order to better understand the situated professional practice. The methodology is qualitative and interpretativist, and it is based on face to face interaction analysis of two Group meetings, as well as ethnographic observation during consultation involving family members and their deaf children. The analysis presents the moment of the Group creation, and the co-construction of interconnected narrative sequences, with the participation of the mediator and the children s mothers. Different types of narratives have arisen, such as of hypothetic, general, and of specific nature. The narratives have evaluation and different points according to different functions in the interaction, in order to achieve identity construction purposes, raise problems and questions, counsel, present alignments and instruction understanding, during interaction. Mothers have changed their understanding in respect of interaction and communication with their children when narrating and participating of the group interaction. Regarding the mediation activity, the speech therapist, besides co-construing narratives, has made interventions through questions, instructions and evaluations, designed to each mother, according to her purposes. The participation in this place of understanding co-construction was productive, and it helped to raise awareness among participants, as well as construe knowledge concerning the critical role of mothers for the development of their children in their daily communication. The study brings relevant contribution to the practice of reflection in the deafness field, helping in the understanding of professional counseling practice, and in the discussion of political aspects related to education and health of deaf children.

KELLY DAY 19 July 2005 (has links)
[en] Officially declared as a multilingual and multicultural country, Brazil has diverse multi-lingual situations in its territory. Within these we must add the context of the frontier, with regions that in the way they put people face to face with linguistic and cultural differences, are ripe for the exploitation of bilingual societies. In this work we will elaborate on a sociolinguistic portrait of the Franco- Brazilian frontier (Oiapoque and Saint Georges), taking as a base the contact between people with distinct languages and the result of this contact in the daily life of the inhabitants of one side or the other of the frontier, correlating the two realities and discussing questions relative to the linguistic politics present or absent in that region.
