[en] BIOPOLITICS FORCED EVICTIONS: HABITING AND RESISTENCE AT VILA AUTÓDROMO / [pt] REMOÇÕES BIOPOLÍTICAS: O HABITAR E A RESISTÊNCIA DA VILA AUTÓDROMO

CLARISSA PIRES DE ALMEIDA NABACK 30 May 2016 (has links)
[en] After pressures and tactics of persuasion by the government, part of the Vila Autódromo population accepted the resettlement offer in an Housing Project called Parque Carioca , or compensations. Vila Autódromo consists in a regularized settlement, considered favela by the state, which is next to the area for sports complex of the Olympic Park. Even with some legal guarantees, it removal has been taking place, not only in a judicial arena, but, mainly, over a bio-political terrain - which invests in the lives of residents. It is important to develop a reflection about the updating of the favela s removals and the normalization of Rio s urban space. The favela often meant a heterotopia, the other space , different or abnormal for urban planning. Academic research in urban sociology and history have created different responses to slum problem . The favela won t be considered as an habitat, a product only of exclusion and segregation of power. The favela also consists in a production of space: a sort of living as a poet , that involves the formation of network relations and affections, history, memory, work and the struggle for freedom and the production of diference. With the theoretical contribution of Michel Foucault and Henri Lefebvre, it will be investigated the resistance of the residents of Vila Autódromo and the procedure that the City adopts to perform the eviction through the interference of the urban production of this community. This study guides the reflection not only to macroeconomic or macro-political aspects , but to the underground field of personal desires and needs that involve a politics of life and resistance in the city.

[en] ABOUT GROUND AND GATES: THE CULTURAL OCCUPATION OF A PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE AND THE RELATIONS BETWEEN ART, POLITICS AND SPACE IN THE CONTEMPORARY / [pt] DE CHÃO E PORTÕES: A OCUPAÇÃO CULTURAL DE UM INSTITUTO PSIQUIÁTRICO E AS RELAÇÕES ENTRE ARTE, POLÍTICA E ESPAÇO NO CONTEMPORÂNEO

GUILHERME NEVES GONCALVES 15 January 2018 (has links)
[en] The present thesis discusses the subject of cultural occupations based on a reflection regarding the experience of the Spa Hotel of Madness, which consisted in the occupation of a psychiatric hospital located in the Municipal Institute Nise da Silveira between the years of 2012 and 2016. The research considers occupations as the strategies of production and re-signification of spaces through collective presence and meaningful practices, that is, practices that focus on the uses and the symbolic relationship of spaces with life forms. The occupation of the Spa Hotel of Madness, attended by cultural collectives, artists, researchers, professionals and users of the mental health network, figures as an interesting case of spatial practices as it transformed two floors of a functioning psychiatric hospital in a space of artistic and cultural production that embraces a wide network of social actors. By mobilizing issues related to the field of social movements, especially the Anti Mental Health Institution s Movement, and processes related to the field of arts and cultural production, occupation is a field of analysis that reveals the intersections between culture and politics in contemporary forms of collective action. The hypothesis discussed here is that an intense approximation is taking place between the political and symbolic production spheres, marked by both the politicization of art and the interplay between political action and cultural performance. In the context of biopower, this process is related to the ways in which the political dispute became inseparable from what Arjun Appadurai calls the work of the imagination. The question of cultural occupations, discussed here in the light of the concept of heterotopia developed by authors such as Foucault and Hetherington, points to a new consideration of the dimension of space as the axis of agency and the construction of other life forms.

[pt] AS EXPRESSÕES DO DESENCANTO NA SÉRIE O REINO DE GONÇALO M. TAVARES / [en] THE DISENCHANTMENT OF THE EXPRESSIONS IN THE SERIES THE KINGDOM OF GONÇALO M. TAVARES.

SUELEN MARIA MARIANO DE SOUSA 23 March 2016 (has links)
[en] The thesis The disenchantment of the expressions in the series The Kingdom of Gonçalo M. Tavares articulates thoughts and arguments around the disenchantment of this experience in the series The Kingdom Writer Gonçalo M. Tavares. From the fragmentary written analysis that focuses on the very understanding of the characters as fractured subject, and reading of narrative webs staging disenchantment in the form of simulacrum, the thesis examines the figurations and the consequences of a power system based on the concept of biopolitics, as it appears on the theoretical thinking of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, among other authors. From this perspective, throughout the development of this study, this concept is associated to excess History notions, to a conception of excessive, and in particular the tragic experience of the human condition delivered to the excesses of his passions.

[pt] A METROPOLIZAÇÃO DO ESPAÇO: BIOPOLÍTICA NA ERA DA INFORMAÇÃO / [en] THE METROPOLIZATION OF SPACE: BIOPOLITICS IN THE INFORMATIONAL ERA

HORACIO NOGUEIRA PIZZOLANTE 11 May 2023 (has links)
[en] Specific to the present historical moment and to the current phase of development of capitalism, the process of metropolization of space leads to unprecedented social, political, economic, cultural – and therefore spatial – metamorphoses. Marked by the exacerbation of the society of control and security, under the domain of biopolitics, the current historical moment is one of exacerbating the effects of globalization and the improvement of information and communication technologies, as well as war and surveillance technologies In this context, we found that the productive restructuring of the economy (the transformations resulting from the hegemony of immaterial labor), the covid-19 pandemic and the exercise of control in the information age have strong links and spatial repercussions, especially with regard to the ongoing metropolitan metamorphoses. Thus, we indicate as our thesis that the exacerbation of the society of control and security and its dissemination to all dimensions of life, the exercise of biopolitics, the metropolitan metamorphosis and the productive restructuring (with the consolidation of the hegemony of immaterial labour), in information age, inaugurate a new phase of capitalist (re)production: the metropolization of space. Therefore, our central objective will be to analyse the spatial links between the exacerbation of the society of control and security under the paradigm of biopolitics, productive restructuring and the course of globalization in the light of the process of space metropolization.

[en] FROM THE TRIP TO THE BOOK: ERRATIC NARRATIVES AND POETIC ERRANTRIES (OR: A SENTENCE OF LIFE OR DEATH) / [pt] DA VIAGEM AO LIVRO: NARRATIVAS ERRÁTICAS E ERRÂNCIAS POÉTICAS (OU: UMA SENTENÇA DE VIDA OU DE MORTE)

MARIA HELENA MALTA REZENDE 16 May 2017 (has links)
[en] This dissertation examines representations of cultural identities and of colonial and postcolonial conditions, found in part of the Portuguese and African literary works, especially in the first decade of the 21st century. Focused in authors for whom the trip is the book (PIGLIA, 2010) and the errantry is the writing procedure, the work analyzes narratives by Ruy Duarte de Carvalho (Desmedida: Luanda - São Paulo - São Francisco e volta, 2006), José Eduardo Agualusa (Teoria geral do esquecimento, 2012, and Fronteiras perdidas, 1998), Dulce Maria Cardoso (O retorno, 2012) e António Lobo Antunes (Os cus de Judas, 1979). When confronted, these books pointed to the fact that they have risen, no matter how, from the passage of a narrative voice through a collective of significant landscapes, which lead us to the conclusion that the contemporary writer originating in the universe of portuguese language uses his tools, among other targets, to observe, reveal and challenge realities and powers that, inevitably, leads to important cultural, social and political reflections.

[en] TRAVESTI PROSTITUTION IN BRAZIL: READING AGENCY AND SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH DISSIDENT SEXUALITIES / [pt] PROSTITUIÇÃO TRAVESTI NO BRASIL: LENDO AGÊNCIA E SOBERANIA POR MEIO DE SEXUALIDADES DISSIDENTES

AMANDA ALVARES FERREIRA 29 May 2018 (has links)
[en] Travesti Prostitution in Brazil: reading agency and sovereignty through dissident sexualities investigates the marginalised subjectivities of travestis within the Brazilian context, to analyse discourses both in the local and international realm. I conduct a critique of discourses on sex-trafficking and prostitution, pointing to the naturalisation of gender norms that hinders an understanding of experiences that exceed the binary prostitute versus trafficking victim. To do so, I analyse, through a foucauldian and butlerian queer perspective, travestis subjectivities that constitute themselves precisely in the field of prostitution practices. I propose, therefore, that these experiences allow both resistance and subjection to gender regulations that are legible in the preset society. Finally, I present a critique to the formation of a biopolitical society in Brazil: pointing that a sovereign power predominates in making die these unintelligible bodies, so that subjectivities considered normal in gender, race, and class terms can be made live. This opens the possibility of reflecting on how the Brazilian state denies its queerness as it tries to adequate itself to homonormative speeches, as well as to discourses of defense of LGBTTQI community, that emerge in the international realm, but still allows that a sovereign power is exercised over non-ideal transsexual bodies.

[en] SOVEREIGNTY AND BIOPOLITICS: THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PACIFYING POLICE PROGRAM IN RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] SOBERANIA E BIOPOLÍTICA: A CONSTRUÇÃO DISCURSIVA DO PROGRAMA DE POLÍCIA PACIFICADORA NO RIO DE JANEIRO

VICTORIA MONTEIRO DA SILVA SANTOS 04 October 2017 (has links)
[en] This dissertation offers an analysis of state actors discursive practices which construct, in various ways, the Pacification Policy and, more specifically, the Pacifying Police Program in Rio de Janeiro, created in 2008. In a post-structural discourse analysis, two main discursive articulations are identified: on one hand, the Program is constructed as a set of practices aimed at the recovery of those territories which pose a risk to the whole population, which enables the deployment of violent and militarized practices; on the other hand, the Program is constructed as a set of practices aimed at the management of life and the promotion of socioeconomic development in the communities undergoing a pacification process. By analyzing the discursive practices associated with both articulations, I argue that the dispute over the stabilization of meanings associated with pacification in Rio de Janeiro reflects a broader ambiguity, which is associated to the deployment of biopolitical practices by the state: while it is defended that the entire population must have their rights assured and they development promoted, the state maintains the prerogative to delimitate, in a sovereign manner, certain spaces and subjects as sources of risk to the population, submitting them to distinct and illiberal forms of government. In the case of pacification, it is argued that such ambiguity leads to impacts such as the coexistence between a persistence of violent police practices and efforts of proximity policing – which may arguably impact the sustainability of the Program and its results.

[en] DANCE AND RITUAL: FROM THE SACRED TO THE STAGE / [pt] DANÇA E RITUAL: DO SAGRADO AO CÊNICO

FELIPE WIRCKER MACHADO 17 August 2018 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to think about the passage of the dances of the orishas from the religious context of Brazilian candomblé to the stage, taking as an issue the relation between art and the sacred trough the works on dance of Brazilian choreographers. For this purpose, however, the thesis begins with a critical review of the symbolic and representative perspective that guides most of the canonic texts about Brazilian candomblé, mainly in the fields of anthropology and ethnology. This initial movement aims to put in question this perspective as a presupposition of the analyses that doesn t consider a critique to the representative paradigm that guide the western thought, once candomblé has its own philosophical and cosmological presuppositions, as a world view that not necessarily operates through this same symbolic and representative logic. Following this first movement, it dedicates to a rereading of the biopolitics issue from the immune paradigm that relates the scientific knowledge about the body to a political and democratic conception, which is interesting to think about the colonial and slavery system relations to the non-European ways of living and world views in Brazil that shaped the construction of candomblé as a religious body to which these issues flows, considering the inherent dynamism of the tradition in which it is based upon. The dance arises as a field of thought and knowledge in which the contradictions get together and are solved through the work with and from the body, emphasizing its multiplicity in a positive way - and not as in the biopolitical project that aims to confine it in opposite conceptions. This comes, first, through a consideration about the sound and the music as ways to think political, economic and social organizations, in order to undo the hierarchy of senses from which emerge different rationalities and world views. Finally, the works of Brazilian choreographers that take as a dance technique not only the European dances, but also the African dances and, more specifically, from the orishas that belongs to the religious tradition of candomblé. This passage from the terreiros (the temples) to the stage brings forward the relation between the sacred, the ritual and art as fields that, according to a world view founded in candomblé, if we can refer like that, are not aparted.

[pt] SOBERANIA EM OUTROS TERMOS: DISSIDÊNCIA, MORTE E EXCESSO / [en] SOVEREIGNTY IN OTHER TERMS: DISSIDENCE, DEATH AND EXCESS

AMANDA ALVARES FERREIRA 07 August 2023 (has links)
[en] The objective of this thesis is, firstly, to analyze the reproduction of the discourse on sovereignty in International Relations, understanding it as a mechanism of fixation of identity and, secondly, to dislocate the focus of sovereignty through an analysis of mechanisms of death, considering death as object and locus of sovereignty itself. Considering queer theory’s debate on the limits of politics, the thesis engages critically with the development of this theoretical perspective in the discipline, presenting a reading that foments the dismantling of the notion of State’s uniformity and the prevalence of the international as a condition of International Relations, with the aim of understanding the international as universality. After that, in dialogue with Foucault and Butler, the thesis deepens itself in detailing the relations of power at the level of the body through the debate on subjection implied by gender identity’s fixation, demonstrating it as fundamental to the premise of rationality and agency as both founding of sovereignty. To do so, the Brazilian context of marginalization and violence against gender and race minorities is considered. Degeneration is pondered as a form of production of difference in a range of variations at the intersection of gender and race, in a critical engagement with the concept of State racism. Following that, the thesis deepens, then, a theoretical discussion around the different exercises of death over the other in order to understand the costs of the expansion of life, evidencing the constitutive violence of the formation of a sovereign identity. The thesis then proposes an analysis of death as key to the agency of the being and to sovereignty, departing from a reading of bataillean excess. Sovereignty is analyzed in flirting with death, both in slow death as in violent death, both in between consciousness and its interruption, and in between utility and expenditure. Thus, identitarianism is put in check through the questioning of agential capacity reduced to reason, in a contribution that departs from the loss of the self as a contestation of the image of the individual and the sovereign State. Finally, the proposal of an alternative conception of sovereignty is examined by recovering the discussion about queer radicality and about the consequences of the movement of denaturalization both of gender as well as sovereignty, be them significative in terms of resistance or not.

[pt] ASSALTO AO CÉU: OPERAÍSMO E GÊNESE DO CONCEITO DE TRABALHO IMATERIAL / [en] STORMING HEAVEN: WORKERISM AND GENESIS OF THE CONCEPT OF IMMATERIAL LABOR

MARIA CECILIA LESSA DA ROCHA 10 August 2020 (has links)
[en] The paper has as object of research the genesis of the concept of immaterial labor developed and widely disseminated by Antonio Negri. From the perspective of the Italian left, we analyze, initially, the impact of the Depression of 1929 and the two main devices, Fordism and Keynesianism, developed and expanded intensively to overcome this first major cycle of crisis of the twentieth century. In the sequel, we tackle the Workerism - movement emerged in Italy amid labor struggles of the 1960s and 1970s - in its historical context and central themes. The Workerism while movement that brought together many young thinkers around the proposal of reading Marx s work, sought not merely a theoretical construct, but, above all, create instruments of criticism and action for workers struggles that unfolded in the second great cycle of crisis of capitalism in the 1970s. Finally, we will discuss the concept of immaterial labor - a concept under construction, which has several disputes on lathes of its fundamental elements. We will discuss the biopolitical dimension, and subjective, economic and political aspects of this concept based on formulations developed by Antonio Negri.
