Nordstrand, Anna, Swedling, Daniel January 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to identify the feeling of social belonging which individuals of non-swedish descent are experiencing in Sweden today. The relationship to Sweden and it’s citizens and which structural terms the individual is living after. To answer this qualitative semistructured interviews were performed and the subjective interpretation of reality was analyzed with an abductive method. The empirical material was viewed against a background made of social constructionism, stigmatization and the need of belonging for the creation of identity.   The results show that in Sweden there exists a structural discrimination based on ethnicity and an othering of individuals of non-swedish descent, an othering which has a ground in a preconception of a white definition of reality. This power imbalance forces the individual into a position as a deviant, which paradoxically is required for integration. To be swedish is therefore nothing which comes easy as the categories are tightly constructed and hard to integrate with a mixed national background, something the lack of adequate terminology in the swedish language portraits. Knowledge of language, commitment in various settings and meaningful relationships are shown to have a significant effect on the creation of context and belonging.

Homo Svedikus - "Lika barn leka bäst"? : En diskursanalys av Sverigedemokraternas principprogram

Jorvén Bernegard, Eva, Lindau, Petra January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how Sverigedemokraterna, in their program of principles, design Swedishness and as an effect of this creates a boundary between “us and them”. Our method of choice has been text- and discourse analysis. By analyzing the text in the program we’ve come to the conclusion that it has an effect on, and helps to create social categories that are crucial to people’s social positions and resource possibilities. The party builds their version of Swedishness on a social and national likeness that creates social inequality. Our results also shows that it’s important to examine texts used by the elite of society since they in their powerful position has a preferential right of interpretation.

An ethnological study of the logic of sustainability, justice and Swedishness through coffee consumption in Sweden

Bäckström, Sara January 2020 (has links)
“Coffee Heaven - an ethnological study of the logic of sustainability, justice and Swedishness through coffee consumption in Sweden” is the english title of this essay. The purpose of the study is to identify and analyze different logics that produce, negotiate and stabilize coffee consumption as a culture phenome, based on the logics expressed and used in actors’ statements about coffee, sustainability and social justice. The analysis takes place through a logic perspective that focuses on how the production and consumption of coffee as an idea is motivated in a time where consumption and production of coffee involve a range of power relations that can be understood as incompatible with just a sustainable climate. Furthermore, the social context of coffee, conceptions of Swedishness and how actors construct sustainability as a cultural concept is studied. The study is based mainly on interviews and digital ethnography of Sweden's four largest roasteries. The result of the study is that coffee consumption is naturalized and illuminated with a sustainability perspective, so the actors use various anthropocentric logics to understand the continued production and consumption of coffee. Sustainability is cultivated in the actor’s statements to conform to their own existing contexts, which can validate coffee as a sustainable av just practice.

"But where are you really from?" : A qualitative study about young Afro-Swedes view on their own identity and sense of belonging

Adem, Nadja, Nur, Rahma January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how young Afro-Swedes view their identity and sense of belonging in Swedish society, and whether they face challenges and how it affects their social inclusion. This is examined through eight semi-structured interviews with six women and two men who are all born and raised in Sweden. Furthermore, thematic analyses have been applied to the material. The two concepts that have been used to analyze and discuss the collected data is ethnicity and belonging. The results of this study indicates that young Afro-Swedes do not identify as Swedish mostly because society categorizes them as “immigrants”. There is a clear perception that Swedish people are all white, blond and blue eyed which they as black citizens do not fit into. Because of this, young Afro-Swedes have faced many challenges and some of them feel socially excluded. The challenges they have in common is racism and xenophobia which has negatively affected them in many ways. The result of this study also shows how social environment, skin color, religion, and residential area have a major impact on how Afro-Swedes choose to identify as well as their sense of belonging in Sweden.

A Qualitative Study of Swedish Muslim Female Converts and Becoming 'the Other'"

Aldala, Tasneem January 2023 (has links)
In this analysis, the aim is to investigate the embodiment and transmission of identity among Swedish female converts to Islam. The examination centers on the position these women occupy in both Swedish society and the Muslim community, and whether they experience a state of “in-betweenness” due to identity conflicts. The focus is also on how Swedish female converts, who are ethnically Swedish, can become perceived as “the Other” within their own society, rooted in concepts of “Swedishness”. Assessing the position of Muslim female converts in Sweden is crucial as they frequently confront prejudiced attitudes and discrimination from both Swedish society and the Muslim community. Simultaneously, they may be considered “traitors” by Swedish society due to their conversion to Islam, resulting in a complex identity conflict where these women find themselves situated between cultures and societies. Hence, finding themselves in a position of “in-betweenness”. This essay endeavors to shed light on the difficulties and opportunities that Swedish Muslim female converts encounter, as well as to examine how they navigate their identity in a Swedish context and how they undergo a transformation from being “part of the majority” to “the Other”.

“Just Like Regular Minced Meat” : A Qualitative Discourse Analysis of Packaging Design and Marketing of Two Swedish-produced Meat Alternatives.

Dahlman, Vilma January 2022 (has links)
The food we eat has a big impact on the environment, and the global food chain is estimated to make up one third of all global emissions. In the future we will need to decrease the climate impact our food consumption has on the planet and therefore we must adjust to novel foods with a lower CO2-footprint. This thesis aims to research how two Swedish-produced novel minced meat substitute products are marketed and presented to the Swedish consumer through semiotics and discourse analysis. The visual presentation of these products’ packaging design and website information was analysed through annotated observation and interpreted through discourses based on three central themes: Swedishness, sustainability and minced meat. The analysis demonstrated that representations of all three themes are used in order to build a narrative through storytelling. The results of the analysis indicate that the central themes are used in order to convey a sense of naturalness and authenticity, as well as making the product recognisable to the consumer.

Fyra nyanser av brunt : Adopterades erfarenheter av svenskhetens gränser, ras och vithet / Four Shades of Brown : adoptees experiences of Swedishness boundaries, race and whiteness

Fransson, Therése January 2016 (has links)
This study is about the group of transnational adoptees, which means adoptions that includes a transfer of children to families who racially and culturally different from them. The Swedish research regarding to this group of adoptees is relatively limited. Especially in relation to the phenomenon like race, whiteness and racism. There is a need for more knowledge about what it means to be Swedish and non-white, something that the group adoptees has experience of.                      The purpose of this study is to examine if, and in that case how, it is possible to discern a pattern of Swedishness boundaries using the adoptees experience, and to find out how notions of race interacts with these experiences. The study is based on a qualitative approach and the empirical material consists of interviews with four adoptees. To understand my empirical data I have chosen to work with several different theoretical perspectives to illustrate the phenomenon as can be seen as border guards of Swedishness concerning to the adoptees. These phenomenon’s are: race and whiteness, and racialization and (everyday) racism. I am also inspired by the American research field of critical race and whiteness studies, but from a Swedish context.                       The results show that the main limit for Swedishness goes at the adoptees non-white bodies. It is also by their non-white bodies as they get their belonging in Sweden questioned and can be considered as almost Swedes. It is also their non-Swedish appearance that allows them to be exposed to racialization and racism in everyday life. Thus, it is possible to argue, on the basis of the adoptees stories, that race as construction exists and that we must speak of it to be able to understand how it, as adopted (Swedish), is to live in a non-white body in Sweden today.

To consider oneself not to be nor being able to become Swedish : Four Swedish Somalis’ perception of identity

Jonsson, Albin January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of how four Swedish Somalis view Swedishness and to examine possible obstacles they identify to be considered as Swedish. I have examined how they look at their identities and how this relates to how they view home and homeland. I show that my informants responds to Swedishness in partially varying ways and that there are also several common ways of reasoning among them. Becoming totally Swedish is something my informants both choose not to be and something they do not feel they have the opportunity to become. How my informants consider themselves is highly dependent not only of others' dealing with them, but also what they suppose others think of them. In order to understand my informants perceived exclusion, I discuss what they feel excluded from and in which situations the exclusion comes into question. The experience of being excluded from Swedishness can in turn create other identities and provide new solidarities.

All flesh is grass : The legitimization of production and consumption of animal products in discussions of climate and sustainability

Bäckström, Sara January 2019 (has links)

Johansson, Sofia January 2006 (has links)
<p>This thesis examines the National Heritage Board in Sweden and the way they look upon themselves, the surrounding world and their mission. Methodologically it’s a discourse analysis based on poststructuralist and social constructionist thoughts. This means, simplified, that nothing is taken for granted and that power relations and ideology always matters. There is no true or distinct heritage. The public cultural heritage was often used as a tool in creating a homogeneous national identity, but what is its function today? The nationalistic function is politically impossible in the paradigm of today, stressing diversity and multiculturalism. The main result of the study is the Board’s alteration from a unity discourse to a diversity discourse, but at the same time there is an over-all ambiguity, which leads to the conclusion that the Board wants to describe themselves and their work in accordance with the diversity discourse, but are constantly falling back into the views of the unity discourse.</p>
