Esta dissertação propõe uma investigação acerca da circulação da obra de Bernardo Carvalho, autor brasileiro contemporâneo, em Portugal, através da leitura e análise da crítica produzida em contexto acadêmico (revistas, teses e dissertações) e também publicada na imprensa portuguesa. Trata-se, também, de verificar os modos de produção (desde o trabalho do autor até as formas de circulação dos textos) e recepção da literatura naquele país, com o qual o Brasil, historicamente, mantém relações culturais e linguísticas relativamente próximas e não tão desiguais, dada a posição periférica de ambos no espaço literário mundial (Pascale Casanova). O trabalho se desenvolve a partir de uma leitura distanciada (Franco Moretti) que busca situar o campo literário (Bourdieu) português na contemporaneidade e verificar o estado atual desse campo. A pesquisa mostra um caráter cosmopolita, com limites mais ou menos definidos em relação à alta cultura e à indústria cultural e com obras que estão em busca da autonomia do campo literário. A presente situação mostra-se propícia para a boa recepção e circulação da obra de Bernardo Carvalho, autor conhecido por sua militância em busca de uma literatura autônoma, que não precise tratar de aspectos da política e da identidade nacional; assim sendo, Carvalho circula entre a crítica especializada na imprensa e é matéria de estudo e pesquisa em universidades portuguesas, mostrando a capacidade de penetração de sua obra literária em Portugal, lida como uma das melhores da recente literatura não só brasileira, visto que é comparada às obras de grandes nomes da literatura mundial. / At the present Master Thesis, my purpose is to investigate the circulation of the work by the contemporary Brazilian author Bernardo Carvalho in Portugal through the reading and the analysis of the critical resources produced in academic context, such as journals, Master Thesis, and Doctoral Dissertations, as well as the materials that were published by the Portuguese press. I also shall verify the means of production (from the authors work until the text circulation) and literature reception in that country, with which Brazil has historically kept cultural and linguistic relations. Those relations are relatively close but not unequal since both countries occupy a peripheral position in the world literary space (Pascale Casanova). This work will be developed in the light of a distant reading (Franco Moretti) that seeks to locate the literary field (Bourdieu) from the contemporary Portugal and to verify the status of such field. In that sense, the research manifests a cosmopolitan character, whose limits are somehow defined in relation to high culture and to cultural industry, also by literary works that look forward to obtaining autonomy in the literary field. The current scenario seems favorable to the great reception and circulation of the work by Bernardo Carvalho, who is known by the activism in favor of an autonomous literature, in other words, a literature that does not need neither to cover politic aspects nor national identity. Therefore, Carvalho circulates in the specialized press and is scope of study and research in Portuguese universities, which shows the ability of his literary work to penetrate/access, as it is considered not only as one of the best examples of recent Brazilian literature, but also in a global context since it is compared to the works by the greatest names of world literature.

A presente dissertação visa realizar uma leitura de Nove Noites (2002), de Bernardo Carvalho, a partir da noção de desamparo [Hilflosigkeit], tal como desenvolvida na psicanálise por Sigmund Freud, dessa maneira, a análise ressaltará também as consonâncias entre literatura e psicanálise. Com tal escopo, o caminho analítico se desdobrará nas duas faces que assume o desamparo no romance: individual, caso do segundo narrador, e coletiva, no que toca às tribos indígenas presentes na obra. Nesta última, o trabalho enveredará por uma rápida exposição da história dos povos ameríndios no século XX, ressaltando aqueles momentos pertinentes à análise (investigando, por exemplo, o papel de uma personagem histórica como Rondon, bisavô do narrador). No que tange ao segundo narrador, a leitura percorre a convivência com seu pai na infância e na maturidade, ressaltando como a procura por Quain revela algo de seu confronto com o desamparo. O aspecto psicanalítico mostra-se, dessa forma, transversal na narrativa, expondo o afeto predominante de um momento histórico (o romance mencionará os ataques terroristas que acentuam as incertezas de uma época), internalizado na forma romanesca. / This dissertation aims to analyse Bernardo Carvalhos Nove Noites [Nine Nights] (2002), based on the idea of helplessness [Hilflosigkeit], as developed in psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud, thus also highlighting the consonance between literature and psychoanalysis. Within that scope, the analytical path will develop over the two forms in which helplessness is presented in the novel: individual, as is the case of the second narrator, and collective, relative to the indigenous tribes that are featured in the novel. The second analytical path will include a brief exposition of the history of Amerindian tribes in the 20th century, with special attention to those moments that are pertinent to this study (investigating, for example, the role of a historical character such as Rondon, the narrators great-grandfather). Regarding the second narrator, the analysis will cover his relationship with his father in childhood and adulthood, highlighting how the search for Quain reveals something of his confrontation with helplessness. The psychoanalytical aspect reveals itself to therefore transverse the narrative, exposing the predominant emotion of a historical moment (the novel will mention the terrorist attacks that accentuate the uncertainties of a period), internalized in the form of the novel.

A presente dissertação reflete sobre a produção de dramaturgia contemporânea brasileira a partir do horizonte desvelado por duas obras em especial, Agreste, de Newton Moreno, e BR-3, de Bernardo Carvalho. O foco nos dois textos não anula o diálogo pertinente e necessário também com a esfera espetacular quando necessário. Através da ideia de deslocamento, analisamos, primeiramente, o devir errático associado às obras em duas instâncias; errar para além de sua própria esfera de gênero em busca do outro e do surgimento de novos de campos de subjetividade; errar como parte de uma demanda interna e estrutural através de personagens em constante movimento e da exploração de um Brasil longínquo e extenso. Em seguida, empenhados na investigação da atuação crítica de tais obras, tendo como hipótese sua relação não documental com o presente, analisaremos o tratamento da subjetividade na elaboração das personagens, e o tratamento da ideia de território. Para além da dualidade entre realidade e representação, descortina-se a possibilidade de narrativas imagéticas, ou seja, em que os espaços autorais e imaginários possuem grande importância. Tais considerações guiam, por último, o questionamento a respeito da dimensão política de tais obras, percorrendo, primeiramente, algumas divergências que marcam o chamado teatro político. / This work reflects on the production of Brazilian contemporary dramaturgy from the unveiled horizon by two works in particular: Agreste, by Newton Moreno, and BR-3, by Bernardo Carvalho. The focus on both texts does not annul the relevant and necessary dialogue with the spectacular realm when required. Through the idea of displacement we analyze first the erratic becoming associated with the works in two instances; err beyond their own sphere in search of others and the emergence of new fields of subjectivity; err as part of an internal and structural demand, characters in constant motion, exploring a distant and extensive Brazil. Then engaged in research the critical role of the works under the hypothesis of their non-documentary relationship with the present, we will examine the treatment of subjectivity in the development of the characters, and the treatment of the territory ideia. In addition to the duality between reality and representation, it becomes visible the possibility of imagery narratives, where the authorial and imaginary spaces are of great importance. Such considerations guide, lastly, the question about the political dimension of such works, browsing, first, some differences that mark the so-called political theater.

[pt] A partir da delimitação histórico-temporal do final do século XX aos dias atuais, esta dissertação tem por objetivos abordar a questão do território como uma das mais importantes do nosso tempo, investigar como se encena a experiência do limite e de sua rasura na ficção contemporânea, e analisar narrativas de diferentes campos do saber e do fazer, como o cinema, a literatura e a resenha crítica. Na tentativa de estabelecer o diálogo entre a representação na literatura e em outras formas de expressão das questões relativas ao território, serão analisados o romance Teatro (1998) e o romance Nove Noites (2002), de Bernardo Carvalho, e o filme O invasor (2001), de Beto Brant. / [en] This thesis discusses the question of territory as one of the major issues today, investigates how the limit experience and its erasure are shown in contemporary fiction, and analyzes narratives in such different fields of knowledge and art as film, literature and criticism. In an attempt to set up a dialogue between literature and other forms of expression, Bernardo Carvalho's novels Teatro (1998) and Nove noites (2002) and Beto Brant's movie O invasor (2001) are discussed.

This paper proposes a reflection on the literary reading through an approach that focuses on the process of investigation, that is, this study is concerned with the reader's interaction in his/her interpretative operation. To accomplish this objective, I make use of autoethnography (CLIFFORD, 2008) (GEERTZ, 1973) (SILVA, 2011) (VERSIANI, 2005), a methodological bias that is defined by the analysis of social practices from the intersection of autobiography with ethnography. The adopted perspective helps to reflect on the relevance of the researcher's subjectivity in the construction of interpretation. Here, I use this methodology as a way to analyze the record of my reading process, through the analysis of my journal with daily readings of the novel Nove Noites (2002), by Bernardo Carvalho, observing the various associations established, from critics and readers of the literary text, and even the relation with other texts and personal experiences. For this analysis, I use daily records as an important research source for the registration of the reading process which, for having fragmentation and freedom in writing as features, (LEJEUNE, 2008) (MACHADO, 1998) provides an ideal space for constitution of subjectivities. The theoretical basis also focuses on researchers who reflected on the literary reading, such as Compagnon (2010), Iser (2002; 1979), Jauss (2002), Fish (1992), Culler (1997) and Eco (2002; 2005). This research is still aligned with a perspective that understands the literary reading as a process that allows the construction of the reader’s identities (HALL, 2011) (CULLER, 1999) by the various subjectivities that permeate a literary text. / Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre a leitura literária por meio de uma abordagem que privilegia a investigação do processo, ou seja, este estudo preocupa-se com a interação do/a leitor/a em sua operação interpretativa. Para alcançar este objetivo, utilizo a autoetnografia (CLIFFORD, 2008) (GEERTZ, 1973) (SILVA, 2011) (VERSIANI, 2005), um viés metodológico que se define pela análise de práticas sociais, a partir do entrecruzamento da autobiografia com a etnografia. A perspectiva adotada ajuda a refletir sobre a relevância da subjetividade do/a pesquisador/a na construção da interpretação. Aqui, uso esta metodologia como uma forma de analisar o registro do meu processo de leitura, por meio da análise do diário de leituras do romance Nove Noites (2002), de Bernardo Carvalho, observando as diversas associações estabelecidas, desde críticos e leitores/as do texto literário, até mesmo a relação com outros textos e experiências pessoais. Para esta análise utilizo o diário como uma importante fonte de pesquisa para o registro do processo de leitura, o qual, por ter como características a fragmentação e a liberdade na escrita (LEJEUNE, 2008) (MACHADO, 1998) propicia um espaço ideal para a constituição de subjetividades. A base teórica concentra-se também em pesquisadores que refletiram sobre a leitura literária, como Compagnon (2010), Iser (2002; 1979), Jaus (2002), Fish (1992), Culler (1997) e Eco (2002; 2005). Esta pesquisa se alinha ainda a uma perspectiva que entende a leitura literária como um processo que permite a construção das identidades (HALL, 2011) (CULLER, 1999) do/a leitor/a por meio das diversas subjetividades que perpassam um texto literário.

[pt] A presente dissertação pretende investigar e definir, levando-se em consideração a deflagração da crise do sujeito iluminista do século XVIII e o sério abalo na Razão Ocidental, sofrido no pós-guerra, o conceito de distopia contemporânea, uma vez que esta pode assumir várias nuances e matizes. Pretende, ainda, analisar, de que forma possíveis fenômenos ditos distópicos: errância, fragmentação, ausência de valores universais, melancolia, inadequação ou desajuste face aos padrões preestabelecidos, enquanto desencadeadores de diferentes modos de construção literária, aparecem inscritos nas narrativas da ficção brasileira contemporânea, em especial, em duas obras significativas da produção literária, a saber: Solidão continental, de João Gilberto Noll, e Mongólia, de Bernardo Carvalho. / [en] This dissertation aims to investigate and define, taking into consideration the outbreak of the Eighteenth century Elinghtenment Subject crisis and the serious blow in the Western Reason, suffered in the postwar period, the concept of contemporary dystopia, since this can take various hues and tints. It also attempts to analyze how possible phenomena said dystopian : wandering, fragmentation, lack of universal values, gloom, inadequacy or maladjustment compared to pre-established standards, while triggering different modes of literary construction, appear registered in the narratives of Brazilian contemporary fiction, in particular, in two significant works of literature, namely : Solidão continental, by João Gilberto Noll, and Mongólia, by Bernardo Carvalho.

For that end, we intend to investigate the effect of having two narrators in the novel Nove noites, by Bernardo Carvalho, published by Companhia Das Letras, in 2002. From the report of each narrator we will observe the marks that characterize their speeches in order to define the role of this fictional component. We will also consider the changes that have taken the aesthetic components to alternative positions inside the story, as a way to cunningly place in the art of telling stories. We also hope to show how this modern-day-narrator s speech can produce a text that mixes real and imaginary friends and not break up its commitment to fiction. Bernardo Carvalho presents himself as a writer who is conscious of the literary work and his work elevates lose the reader as he follows the text, or maybe this is just a way to disguise the absence of a meaning. In that aspect, the narrator is the component who shows a proposal of a story with such characteristics once he is a fictional space, in a position that is very different from that of the experienced storyteller who used to add his wisdom to the text. From an angle that allows us to identify him with the reader, for he also takes the position of a reader, the narrator highlights the importance of the character and subtracts himself from the story he told. However, his imagination and creativity do not let us fail to see his presence in the story / Ao dar ênfase ao estudo do narrador dentre os elementos da narrativa, espera-se mostrar, com esta dissertação, como a ficção contemporânea dispõe desse recurso estético e de suas formas de representação. Para isso, será investigada a importância da presença de dois narradores, no romance Nove noites, de Bernardo Carvalho, publicado pela Companhia Das Letras, em 2002. A partir do relato de cada um deles, serão observadas as marcas de expressão que caracterizam suas falas, esperando, assim, delinear o papel desse componente ficcional, tendo em vista as transformações ocorridas na arte de contar histórias. Espera-se, ainda, demonstrar como a representação do discurso do narrador na narrativa atual pode ser responsável por um texto que mistura fatos reais e imaginários, sem romper, porém, o compromisso com a ficção. Bernardo Carvalho apresenta-se como um escritor consciente do fazer literário e desenquadra, em sua narrativa, os componentes estéticos, elevando-os a posições alternativas no âmbito da história, como forma de despistar o leitor do sentido do texto, ou, talvez, da sua ausência de sentido. Nesse aspecto, o narrador é o componente que mais evidencia a proposta de uma narrativa com essas características, pois transita num espaço ficcional, numa postura bastante diversa daquela do experiente contador de histórias, que agregava sua sabedoria ao texto narrado. A partir de um ângulo que permite identificá-lo com o leitor, pois também se põe em atitude de espectador, o narrador realça a importância do personagem, subtraindo-se à ação narrada, mas sem deixar, contudo, de garantir sua participação, lançando mão da imaginação e da criatividade
