A Study of the Work and Profile at Two Young Adults Library DepartmentsAugustsson, Anna January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine how two young adult departments at two public libraries work and what profiles the young adult departments have. To examine the work and profiles at the young adult departments I have used the following questions: What are the ideas about working with young adults? How are the two departments in this study working whit young adults? What or which are the profiles of the young adult departments in this study? To answer the questions above I used a qualitative method based on interviews with the librarians responsible for the young adult departments. To complete the interviews I studied the libraries Internet sites and official documents. The examined departments are located at two city libraries and were chosen manly for their focused age group, 15-25 years and that the departments are well established. To analyse the results I used the theoretic model of Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen about the role of the public library. The model describes library profiles from four perspectives: the library as a cultural centre, a knowledge centre, an information centre and a social centre. I also used previous studies about the work with young adults at public libraries to analyse the results from the empiric studies. The analytical findings show many similarities in young adult services between theory and my study. Marketing, user treatment, user influence, the selection of activities and media and finally co-operation are the five categories in which the libraries focus their work with young adults. This is according to the results from my study and previous studies. The results from the analysis of the departments profiles show that the departments have traces from three of the categories but the main profile of both departments are the departments as a cultural centre.

: En diskursanalytisk studie / The Library of Alexandria: Greek or Eastern Heritage? : A Discourse Analytical StudyChristoffersson, Lawe January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the scientific discourse surrounding the founding of the ancient Library in Alexandria. For this I have used a discourse analytical method and I have limited the investigation by only looking at scholarly books from the period 1952 to 2009. In the initial reading it became obvious that authors exclusively cite influences from three different contexts: a Greek influence, a Hellenistic influence, and a native Egyptian/near eastern influence. This seemed to be an interesting and relevant area of study, especially since it could pertain to the modern library context and how we today handle cultural influences. By applying certain theoretical analysis terms such as node, element and floating signifier to the texts I have examined the different books and have tried go get an idea of what important elements the authors focus on, what sources they base this on, and then I have tried to analyze the arguments they use. I identified a number of tendencies in the source material which are discussed at length in the essay. For instance, some of them relate to the author’s problematic usage of primary sources, others have to do with what seems to be arguments stemming from a historical bias against certain cultures. I also looked at how the scholarship has seemingly changed over time and what possible reasons there could be for this.

”Självklart sätter vi inga gränser” : En diskursanalys av hur folkbibliotekens integrationsarbete framställs i svensk dagspress / "Of course, we don´t set boundaries” : A discourse analysis of the way the Swedish daily press depict public libraries work with integrationNilsson, Ida, Närman, Frida January 2016 (has links)
Not since the Second World War, Sweden has experienced such an increase in immigration numbers. Between 2012-2015 the media reported, almost on a daily basis, varying types of information on the refugee situation. Inevitably, every single area and institution in our society is affected by the refugee crisis. However, this master's thesis is restricted to an examination of the role of the public library in the integration process of refugees in Sweden, as highlighted in the media. The aim of the study is to identify how the public libraries integration work towards refugees is depicted in Swedish daily press. Our objectives are to describe how refugees and libraries are illustrated in the press and to examine how particular library services directed towards refugees, are described. The overall research question is: What discourse or discourses can be identified in the material regarding this work? The method and theoretical framework is a discourse analysis inspired by Laclau’s and Mouffe’s discourse theory. Sahlin's four room model was used to provide us with a practical tool in order to conduct the analysis. Our findings show that it was possible to identify four distinct discourses: a popular educational discourse, a literature mediation discourse, a discourse of the library as a physical space and a discourse of the library as a meeting place. Our most salient conclusion is that the traditional role of the library, as an institution of popular education and literature media-tion, is evident also from an integration work perspective.

“We are a society all together” : a study onlibrarians’ views on the way libraries work withnewcomers.Pecorella, Anna Carla January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates the role of public libraries in creating and promoting integration. More specifically, the aim of this thesis is to contribute with knowledge about how public libraries can help newcomers. During the last few years Library and Information Science scholars have conducted several studies in order to gain better knowledge regarding newcomers’ use of the library and their information practices. Fewer studies focus on the way librarians understand and describe their practices. This study aims to be a contribution in this direction, investigating librarians’ descriptions of their practices. Moreover, this study aims to understand the way librarians perceive and describe their professional identity in relation to their work with newly arrived people. The study is qualitative. The empirical data comes from semi structured interviews I conducted with seven librarians who work with newcomers. Data has been analyzed with narrative method. The findings show that library staff tends to establish with newcomers meaningful relationships based on reciprocity, curiosity and openness. Concerning the description of the daily work they conduct for newcomers, three “pillars” has been identified: the social work and the work with languages; the pedagogic work; the work with literature. Moreover, among the elements that enable and facilitate librarians’ work emerged communication and cooperation with external partners. The three “pillars” that resulted from the analysis are also indicative of the way respondents perceive their professional identity in relation to the work they conduct for newcomers. Concerning this last aspect, this resulted in an internal discussion between what should be considered as part of the profession and what should not. The profession of librarianship, in fact, is traditional but even wellconnected to the society. Societal changes generate change in the way libraries perceive their role and identity. Finally, all study participants are aware of the importance of the work they conduct and of the crucial role that libraries may have in the lives of many newcomers.

Skärholmens Bibliotek / Skärholmen LibraryPerenda, Lamija January 2018 (has links)
There are few other places in the city that have the same transparency and accessibility as the libraries. These are important places for the society that encourage community, education and democracy. In Sweden, public libraries have created a public space with low thresholds by making them accessible to all. Something we see more often today is that the libraries are integrated with other central functions like subways and malls. By strategically placing the libraries in more central and accessible places, the relevance and attraction of libraries is updated, however, they lose their visibility in the cityscape and often become subordinate to these other functions. The starting point of the project has been visits and observations in 11 existing libraries, which has been the basis for the project's investigation and proposal. The project discusses the public libraries visibility in the cityscape and the library's important function as public spaces by investigating how a new library in Skärholmen could take shape in connection with the the main public square.

Interstitial Space / MellanrumSjögren, Elsa January 2018 (has links)
In certain types of complex historical buildings an in-between space was often present. This space was a consequence of something more important such as another room, a necessary movement or the thickness of the wall. This thesis aims to investigate this kind of space, mellanrum, on an interior and urban scale. The case studies are Stockholm slott, Rosersbergs slott and Gripsholms slott, the rooms are documented in plan and with a portrait. The small island Riddarholmen is one of the oldest parts of Stockholm, mellanrum is here investigated on an urban scale, mainly in model. Most of the houses on Riddarholmen are owned by the Swedish state and are housing different courts, they need more space but extensions to the old houses are hard to do so a way of freeing space is to collect all the libraries on the island (five in total) in one common court library. In the design of this small institution mellanrum is investigated further and incorporated in a new building. of wood.

Both music and architecture teach us something by experiencing it, they have a built-in educational function through their presence. In music it is quite obvious that it has emotional values that can not be taken out of a musical context and explained differently, than in its actual experience. The purpose of this project is to get an understanding of how architecture can communicate emotional values that only the architecture can communicate through its presence. The structure of the building is thus not only based on a functional division, but in particular an emotional one. To understand how rooms should be designed emotionally, I have used my own feeling in existing rooms to understand what in the rooms and their composition that makes them what they are. In particular, I have studied buildings designed for classical ideals, in which I found feelings that have not been prioritized in functionally styled buildings. The movement through the building is inspired by a classical order, from a centered entrance, where the exhibition hall and restaurant branch out to the right and left, libraries, squares and study areas appear upstairs, and a little secretive behind this staircase is down to a blackbox . The studios are adapted to the proximity to plenty of daylight to get the best possible light for books and other studies, but also for views.
