The image of librarians and the librarian profession : A discourse analytic study of how users talk about librarians and the librarian profession

Storm, Madeleine January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study through discourse analysis how users talk about librarians and the librarian profession and what perceptions they have regarding it. I have tried to do this by asking the questions: How do the users describe librarians and the librarian profession? Are there any patterns in what they say? The method and theory I have used is Laclau and Mouffes’ discourse theory and partially structured interviews. The material consists of interviews with eight users that are both women and men, both students and members of the public and they were between 25 and 50 years old. In the material I found two discourses: the discourse about librarians and the discourse about the librarian profession. I have come to the conclusion that images exists of librarians being older women who are caring and forthcoming but also inaccessible. The image of the librarians also includes them working with books in different ways and that they read and know a lot about literature. When the users have talked about the librarians’ knowledge they have described that librarians have different knowledge based on what they work with. Some librarians work with inter library loans and therefore have more knowledge about that.

”Det gäller att hänga på”- en studie om marknadsföring av folkbibliotek via sociala medier / ”It’s all about keeping up”- a study about marketing of public libraries through social media

Andersson, Louise January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine how public libraries use socialmedia for marketing purposes, and what librarians think about this. My focus of this thesislies on what librarians think about marketing of libraries through social media and if theythink that marketing through social media can create a better relationship between the libraryand its users. The questions I wanted to answer were:‐ Libraries using social media, for what purpose do they use them? ‐ Do the libraries choose to use social media to market their organization? Why? ‐ What attitudes exist among librarians about marketing through social media? The theoretical framework for this thesis is Evert Gummessons model off Relationshipmarketing and the process of Internet marketing, which both are based on relationalperspective. The methodology used for this study was structured interviews. Four interviewswere conducted with five librarians that have partial responsibility of their respective librariessocial media. The result of this study shows that all libraries use social media, but to varying degrees. Theyalso use them for different purposes. The librarians choose to market through social mediabecause it is a way to reach more people and the only way for users to influence the content. The study shows that librarians generally have positive attitudes towards marketing throughsocial media. Negative attitudes are experienced in the beginning of working with socialmedia when the staff is not sure how the tools work. Librarians believe that social media cancreate good relations with its library users. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Urval och inköp av spelfilm till biblioteket- en studie om bibliotekariers arbete med spelfilm på folkbiblioteket / Selection and purchase of feature film to the library- a study of librarians´ work with feature films in the public library

Westerlund, Caroline January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine how librarians are workingwith the selection and purchase of feature films in Swedish publiclibraries. I was interested in examining the underlying reasonsbehind the selections. I chose to focus on how librarians areworking and reason about the library´s film collection. The purpose of my study is to answer the following questions:• How are librarians working with selection and purchase offeature films in the public library?• What factors motivate librarians´ selection of featurefilms?• What do librarians reason about the public library filmcollection? To answer these questions I performed interviews with sevenlibrarians in five different public libraries. The results of theinterviews have been analyzed on the basis of the theories andtheoretical model of Sanna Talja. I used a translated and modifiedversion of Talja´s model in my analysis. Results showed that the economy was a factor influencing theselection and purchases of films. The accessibility to the films wasanother factor that influenced the librarians. Librarians can onlypurchase films with licenses that can be lent to borrowers.Librarians have to purchase films from the contracted sources. Most of the librarians strive to that the library should have a variedfilm collection. They buy both old films as classics but also morerecent films. Some also buy narrower films as an alternative to thecommercial films / Program: Bibliotekarie

The attitude towards comics : a study of librarians’ attitudes towards comics and their treatment in the library.

Sjöberg, Erik January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to study the attitude towardscomics among librarians as well as their personal image ofthe overall attitude towards comics among librarians and themanner in which the attitude of the librarians affects how thecomics are treated in the library.I have performed this study with a qualitative approach andhave interviewed a total of five librarians working in twodifferent libraries.I have founded the theoretical base for my research in anumber of historical attitudes towards comics and thencompared these attitudes towards the answers given in theinterviews as well as prior research found in three theseswritten by Magnus Johansson, Sarah Johansson and KarinEsaiasson. The results of the study is that traces of most of thehistorical attitudes can be found among all of the interviewedlibrarians but that none of them are harboring any negativeattitudes towards comics themselves. On the other hand thestudy does imply that the image of the librarian who onlythinks that comics are meant for children is still very muchalive in the collective subconscious of the librarians. The study also shows that while librarians of today tend tohave a neutral outlook in comics the historically subpartreatment of comic in the libraries and the subsequent lack ofacademic support on the subject have made it necessary forthe librarian in charge of the comic-section to have apersonal interest/liking for comics to be able to do a goodjob. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Vem bestämmer över kvaliteten? : Bibliotekariers privata och professionella syn på kvalitativ skönlitteratur / Who Determines the Quality? : Librarians Private and Professional View on Qualitative Fiction

Hallberg, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
With an increased empowerment of the users, and a dependence on outside critics, one wonders what kind of role the librarians have in a context where qualitative literature is discussed. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between librarians private and professional views on qualitative fiction, in order to be able to discuss their role as quality intermediaries in a user oriented context. The method used, is the qualitative, semistructured interview. This author interviewed seven librarians from three different libraries in Sweden. The theoretical emphasis partly relies on the ten words of qualitative value that Inger Elam and Bengt Brülde discusses in their respective texts, partly on David Garvins quality assessment theory, which defines several quality categories divided between an absolute and a relative quality view.Through the comparison between the private and the professional quality view, examined with the two theoretical approaches, the analysis of the interview material shows that there lies a complexity in the librarians professional role. On the one hand, they are dependent of both the users and the critics judgements about the qualitative aspect in the work with purchasing new literature to the library. Their role is in that point of view a passive one. On the other hand, the informants have other methods to gain control over the quality assessments, which allows them to be more involved in relation to the users and the critics. Therefore, the role of the librarians is a complex one when studied from this perspective. / Program: Bibliotekarie

”Att vara där människor är” En kvalitativ studie av sex folkbiblioteks användande av sociala medier / ”To be where people are” A qualitative study of six public libraries’ use of social media

Klanac, Maria, Nicklasson, Emma January 2012 (has links)
The objective of this bachelor thesis is to examine how some larger Swedish public libraries reason about the use of social media as part of their activities and outreach. To attain the purpose three research-questions were established; why does the public library use social media? How does the public library utilize social media? What extra value do librarians believe that use of social media can add to the libraries’ function? The methodology used in the thesis is qualitative interviews. Six interviews were conducted with librarians in charge of social media at their respective libraries. Five of the interviews were conducted by telephone and one by email. The theoretical framework for the thesis is the model developed by the three Danish researchers Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen, which describes the public libraries’ functions, goals and opportunities in the knowledge and experience society. It is concluded in this thesis that public libraries are using social media to connect with people, to communicate and interact with them. There is a wish for social media to serve as a meeting place where librarians can interact with users. Our results show, however, that these hopes are not fully realized, because the desired response from the users does not occur. Through social media, libraries can make their activities more visible and their resources more readily available for users. It is important for the libraries’ credibility to be available and active on social media. The librarians we interviewed emphasized the importance of updating social media to keep them current and attractive to users. They also surmised that, for the future, the use of social media in libraries will increase and develop. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Sjuksköterskors informationssökning i yrkesvardagen : barriärer och lösningar. Intervjustudie ur ett användarperspektiv med vidareutbildade sjuksköterskor. / Nurses’ information seeking in everyday practice : barriers and solutions. Interview study from a user perspective with nurse practitioners´.

Martinsson, Maria January 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates clinical nurses’ information seekingand information use through semi-structured interviews withsix nurse practitioners, nurses with further education.Previous research shows that nurses have problemsimplementing evidence-searching at the clinic because oforganization, stress and heritage of an old practice that doesnot incorporate the academic education. The theoretical framework consists of T.D. Wilson’sinformation seeking behavior model and R.H. Orr’s model ofinformation needs. The empirical material is analyzed to findproblematic barriers and solutions. Furthermore the studygives answer to the questions; what the nurses’ think of theireducation, what the barriers towards information seeking andinformation use are and suggestions of solution. The resultshows that older education contained more medicine andpractice. Modern education emphasizes nursing theory andreflection to a higher degree, which effectuate nurses to bemore self-contained and better information seekers. Clinicalnurses have a hard time seeking information evidence ineveryday work. To participate in projects, groups ofinterests, meeting a clinical librarian at work, meetings andnursing rounding were found positive but only possible iforganized. A problem is that the librarians are forgotten as aresource and that the clinical nurses do not view them as anordinary team member as for instance the physiotherapist. Most of the nurses wish for more support and inspirationdialogue, especially with clinical lectors that could work asbridge builders between clinic and academy. They also wishfor more contact with clinical librarians, standard nurse plansand more open and allowing leaders. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Mediation of literature in change : about public librarians, Facebook and Twitter.

Jaderup, Anders, Karlsson, Sofie January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe how librarians inSwedish public libraries use Facebook and Twitter in themediation of literature. Our study focus on the librarians’ role inthat process. The research questions are:• How do the librarians in this study regard mediation of literature through Facebook and/or Twitter in relation to othermediation strategies?• What goals and purposes do the librarians give in the selection of literature that they promote on Facebook and/or Twitter?• What do public librarians think about the future for mediation of literature through social media, how will it evolve? The methodology used was qualitative interviews. Six interviewswith librarians that work with mediation of literature throughFacebook and/or Twitter were conducted. The theoreticalframework used comes from Jofrid Karner Smidt’s theory of howpublic librarians view their mediation of literature. The conceptsused are mediation of literature due to public demand, activelyrecommending and informative mediation, and through dialogue. The results of the study show that, in relation to other mediationstrategies, librarians regard mediation through Facebook/Twitter asfast and easy, but the response from the users is often poor.Mediation through dialogue is thereby difficult to achieve. Theother two concepts – mediation of literature due to public demandand actively recommending and informative mediation – are bothto different extent supported by the informants. Speculating aboutthe future, librarians find it likely that mediation through socialmedia will focus more on the users and that dialogue will occur. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Bibliotekarien : en överspänd bibliofil? En jämförande kvalitativ innehållsanalys av bibliotekarien i svensk skönlitteratur, 1945-2009 / The Librarian : an overstrung bibliophile? A comparative qualitative content analysis of the librarian in Swedish fiction, 1945-2009

Linde, Jenny January 2013 (has links)
The study is based on three Swedish novels published in 1945,1956 and 1964, and three Swedish novels published in 1998, 2008and 2009. The aim has been to investigate how librarians are portrayed in Swedish literature, as well as a comparison between the older and the newer literature. What librarian images are portrayed in the analyzed literature? Is the portrayal mostly positive, negative or neutral? Are there any clear differences in how librarians portrayed in newer and older Swedish fiction? If so, what are they? The method used has been qualitative content analysis where relevant paragraphs have been coded and divided them into categories of appearance, personality, and professional identity. The conclusion is that the librarian is often portrayed as an intellectual and somewhat high-strung bibliophile. There has been examples of librarian as colorless, middle-aged, old fashioned, nervous, sensitive, high-strung, neurotic and condescending to library visitors. Overall, the picture is quite negative. However, there are exceptions; two of the portrayed librarians have been portrayed as attractive and, for its time, modern. The fictional librarian is often portrayed as a person who feels a great need to try to get other people to read. There is no clear difference in how the librarians are portrayed in the new or old literature. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Chevlin, Aurora January 2019 (has links)
