De skulle stå upp mot storföretagen : En marxistisk kritik av spelgrafiken i Cyberpunk 2077 med fokus på relationen mellan konsument och producent / Making a stand against capitalism : A marxist critique of game art design in Cyberpunk 2077, concerning representation of consumer-producer relations.

Hagman, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
The essay surveys relevant game art inside Cyberpunk 2077, in the light of the recent and heavily criticized product launch. The study starts out with establishing a discourse reading through qualitative visual samples of how costumers are manipulated to buy hazardous products inside the fictive context of the game. The examples of how this manipulation takes place, are shown by applying pre-described Marxist positions that are generally connected to Marx phases of alienation (see keywords below). The results are then discussed in relation to how real movie-, game-, computer- and other big business markets products through appropriation of stories and themes such as class struggle, civil obedience or working-class culture. Establishing the comparison between the fictive and existing capitalism of CD Projekt Red is the main thesis that is followed through the work and verified in the result through evidence of 3 commodification and commodity fetishism. The main aspect of the arguments focuzes on how CD Projekt Red has shown the relationship between themselves and their followers through consumers and manufacturers. The thesis and subject matter is discussed in the end of the essay, also mentioning the risks of analysing a digital game through Marxist perspectives, since the interactive part of gaming requires the player to be viewed as connected to the product.

Storytelling tricksters: a reader’s coming-of-age in young adult fantasy fiction in Germany

Kim, Chorong 13 June 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, I examine three works of modern German fantasy fiction for young adults, their common grounding in the Romantic aesthetic framework and in particular the Romantic notion of creativity, and the implication of their unique fantasy fiction paradigm in our modern day. The novels are Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story (1979), Inkheart (2003) by Cornelia Funke and The City of Dreaming Books (2006) by Walter Moers. They represent a Germany-specific narrative paradigm which can be seen in the protagonist readers’ transformation from mere readers into storymakers/storytellers, and in the conflict between a book-loving hero and antagonists who are against literature. The protagonists embody the Romantic notion of creativity that involves the sublimation of a poet’s crisis into an exploration of the self. The mundane is infused with fantasy, thereby elevating reality to an idealised state. These Romantic storytelling readers act as tricksters, a fairy tale archetype that shares similarities with the figure of the Romantic poet. I employ the theoretical frameworks of German Romanticism, Frankfurt School critical theory, and postmodern models, including those by Deleuze and Guattari. I argue for a modern version of the trickster archetype which explains how a complacent, passive reader becomes an active storyteller. / Graduate

Thru Marx’s, Marcuse’s and Adorno’s thinkings, we evidence men’s active role in their historicism, as well as the educational role in this society model. For this purpose we point out Marx’s ontological presuppositions of sociohistorical men’s relations, emphasizing his conception of History and the alienation socially constructed by men themselves. We also emphasize Marcuse’s critique of the Instrumental Reason, pointing out the new individuality patterns that emerge from the technological society, as well as his defense in rescuing the negative thinking as a condition to overcome and transform this society model. We demonstrate Adorno’s analysis of the dominant social relations through culture industry, which ended destroying the individual humane dimension. Based on his analysis, we point out his claims to rescue men’s humanization enabling them to enlightenment and critical reflection, so that they can free themselves of oppression and domination circumstances. We emphasize his beliefs in an emancipatory education which conducts men to the transformation of society.

The importance of counter-culture in art and life

Ortlieb, Paulina Elizabeth 03 February 2015 (has links)
Punk rock provided not only a watershed of creativity, innovation and a do-it-yourself spirit to a culture saturated in the mainstream, it physically brought like-minded people together in a community, or rather extended family, which in today’s hyper-d.i.y. culture, is progressively declining. As early as the 1940s, theorists such as Adorno and Horkheimer warned us about alienation in a society increasingly dependent on technology. By looking to punk, and other resilient and robust counter-cultures, perhaps we can find solutions to the pitfalls of the ‘culture industry’ (Adorno, Horkheimer, 1944). My thesis, consisting of a feature-length documentary film and textual analysis, is a culmination of: ethnographic research into the punk scene in my own community; theoretical research into the sociology, ethnography and subculture theory; and my own subjectivity. My personal findings are presented to offer insight into punk philosophy and to spur discourse, rather than deliver an objective account or didactic reproach. / Graduate

Adorno on Music and Politics

Mariasin, Dalia January 2020 (has links)
This study aims to discern and assess Theodor Adorno’s theories on music as an ‘art’ and how it impacts both the political and social landscape of society; more broadly, the purposes of this paper is to identify, and determine the significance of, the relationship between music and politics – that is, whether or not, and how, music can emancipate society from capitalist enslavement. In juxtaposing Adorno’s theories, the opinions of Herbert Marcuse will be discussed as well. As both theorists are considered integral to the creation and development of critical theory of the Frankfurt School, it is only logical to examine their theories and ideologies in detail to determine the role of music as an ‘art’ in the overarching scheme of political scaffolding within which society resides. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
