Haché, Luc 06 1900 (has links)
The long-awaited encounter between Hans-Georg Gadamer and Jacques Derrida finally took place in Paris' Goethe-Institut in 1981. However, the expectations of a dialogue between hermeneutics and deconstruction were hardly fulfilled. Most commentators even agree that the conference Derrida read on this occasion had nothing to do with the actual encounter. We disagree with this assessment. Gadamer had already openly and unconditionally endorsed Heidegger's interpretation of Nietzsche and Derrida chose this occasion to criticize it. Moreover, he called into question the same axiomatic structure of unity and totality that he had elsewhere presented as hermeneutics' own. By questioning this structure, he was attempting to dismantle the core of what hermeneutics was to him. Finally, his conference provided a glimpse into an interpretative approach that completely excludes the truth-centered interpretation of hermeneutics.

Samtal i butik : Språklig interaktion melllan biträden och kunder / Conversation in service encounters : Verbal interaction between shop assistants and customers

Tykesson-Bergman, Ingela January 2006 (has links)
The subject of this study is language use in a special type of social activity: the exchange of goods, services and information in a commercial setting. The main aim is to gain an understanding of the work that shop assistants perform using language. In the analysis, the focus is on verbal routine work. One part of the analysis thus entails mapping the typical utterances and conversational sequences related to such activities. Another part involves investigating how much non-task-oriented interaction the various activities require or “tolerate”, for instance, in the form of “small talk”. A central theme in the study is the interactants’ conversational rights and obligations, from the perspective of politeness theory, especially Fraser’s theory of the conversational contract. The service encounters are categorised as activity types, according to Levinson’s activity theory. In the comparative parts of the study, the concept of pragmeme is used as a tool to examine different realisations of prototypical situated communicative acts. The empirical material consists of authentic conversations, analysed by methods borrowed from conversation analysis. The conversations were recorded at a supermarket checkout till, a deli counter with manual service and an information desk in a bookshop. It turned out that only a few of the customer conversations were without complications. At the supermarket till, for instance, only one out of four conversations was completely routine and unproblematic. Also presented is a diachronic investigation of the norms relating to service encounters that have been taking place in shops since the 1940s. The main sources here are manuals and study materials for shop employees, together with interviews and material gathered from role playing. In this part of the study, a number of features in the historical change process are described, for instance in the manner of addressing people and the use of politeness expressions.

Reciprocity : where art meets the community : action research in response to artistic encounters and relationships

Filardo, Giuseppe January 2009 (has links)
This practice-led research project examines some of the factors and issues facing artists working in the public domain who wish to engage with the community as audience. Using the methodology of action research, the three major creative projects in this study use art as a socio-political tool with the aim of providing an effective vehicle for broadening awareness, understanding forms of social protest and increasing tolerance for diversity. The three projects: Floodline November 7, 2004, Look in, Look out, and The Urban Terrorist Project, dealt with issues of marginalisation of communities, audiences and graffiti artists respectively. The artist/researcher is outlined as both creator and collaborator in the work. Processes included ephemeral elements, such as temporary installation and performance, as well as interactive elements that encouraged direct audience involvement as part of the work. In addition to the roles of creator and collaborator, both of which included audience as well as artist, the presence of an outside entity was evident. Whether local, legal authorities or prevailing attitudes, outside entities had an unavoidable impact on the processes and outcomes of the work. Each project elicited a range of responses from their respective audiences; however, the overarching concept of reciprocity was seen to be the crucial factor in conception, artistic methods and outcomes.

I exist : A literature review of health professionals’ encounter of women in violence in healthcare

Hurtig, Kawsar January 2018 (has links)
Background: In 2015, 17,000 reports were made of about assault cases in Sweden. In 46% of the reports the perpetrator was in a close relationship with the victim. When the victims of violence seek care, healthcare staff lacks routines and resources to pay attention to and respond to women adequately, despite the fact that the healthcare system has legal responsibility to prevent, detect and identify violence. Hence the interest in how healthcare professionals meet these women and what routines and resources are available in health care to support women with violence. Aim: The literature review’s aims was to map the encounter of women who are exposed to violence in close relationships with a male partner. Method: A general literature review based on qualitative and quantitative articles. Result: Healthcare professionals pay attention to and rarely respond to vulnerable women in healthcare due to lack of knowledge and education. Lack of routines and resources prevents healthcare professionals from responding to and providing adequate support to women with violence. Conclusions: The conclusion that can be drawn is that the predominantly affected person's lack of treatment and the lack of routines and resources of the healthcare system is the woman who is the victim of violence. Suggestions for Continuing Research: To research how healthcare is working with the shortcomings that presents in the encounter of women who experience intimate partner violence / Bakgrund: År 2015 gjordes 17 000 anmälningar om misshandelsbrott i Sverige.

Strategie arabského literárního překladu v období Naḥdy / Strategies of literary translation during the Naḥda

Provazníková, Adéla January 2018 (has links)
Bc. Adéla Provazníková Strategies of literary translation during the Nahḍa Abstract: The thesis deals with the topic of literary translation in the Arab world during the Nahḍa. It falls within the framework of descriptive translation studies and is based methodologically on Gideon Toury's model (1995), which determines its structure and goals. Following a brief historical and literary context the thesis systematically describes attitudes towards translation in given period and finds that translational terminology and requirements were changing during the 19th century and only yet stabilizing. The core of this thesis lies in the textual analysis of two novels and three short stories, which reveal individual translational strategies. It shows that Arab translators in the colonial context dealt with the source text in a creative manner and accommodated translated texts to the cultural and historical particularities of a contemporary Arab reader. Keywords: translation strategies, modern Arabic literature, Nahḍa, paraliterature, Adib Ishaq, Labiba Hashim, cultural encounter

Costume albums in Charles V's Habsburg Empire (1528-1549)

Bond, Katherine Louise January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the development of the costume book in the rapidly globalising world of the sixteenth century, concentrating on two costume albums produced in the second quarter of the sixteenth century and whose owners and creators shared close ties to the imperial court of Habsburg ruler and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (r. 1519-56). These richly illustrated albums were among the first known and surviving attempts to make sense of cultural difference by compiling visual information about regional clothing customs in and around Europe and further abroad. Their method of codifying sartorial customs through representative costume figures became a prevailing method through which to examine human difference on an increasingly vast and complex geo-political stage. Yet to have been satisfactorily investigated is the significant role that Habsburg networks and relationships played in shaping these costume albums and their ethnographic interests. The Trachtenbuch, or costume album, of Augsburg portrait medallist Christoph Weiditz (c. 1500-59) is a primary example, constituting a work of keen ethnographic observation which depicts customs and cultures largely witnessed first-hand when the artist travelled to Charles V’s Spanish court in 1529. Of equal interest is the second primary example of this dissertation, the costume album of Christoph von Sternsee (d. 1560) the captain of Charles V’s German Guard. Sternsee’s album, introduced to scholarship for the first time in this study, illustrates diverse cultures and costumes encountered across the imperial Habsburg lands and its neighbours. The emperor’s far-reaching sovereignty propelled Christoph Weiditz and Christoph von Sternsee across the Habsburg lands as they each attempted to benefit their careers and gain prestige from imperial patronage. Their costume albums testify to an empire that encouraged interactions between ambassadors, agents, merchants, military officers, and courtly elite of diverse cultural backgrounds, against a backdrop of shared political, religious, commercial, and military interests. This milieu facilitated the transfer of knowledge and developed methods of visual communication and human representation that were shared and reciprocally recognised.

A study of the origins, development and contemporary manifestations of Christian retreats

Jenkins, Hugh Peter 31 October 2006 (has links)
The dissertation is a study of the origins, development and contemporary manifestations of Christian retreats. It traces origins from the Biblical record until current retreats. Christian retreat is a period of withdrawal from usual activities to experience encounter with God through Christian prayer. Jesus' pattern of engagement in ministry and withdrawal is a vital basis for retreat. Other Biblical descriptions of retreat are studied. There is an examination of retreat experiences in Church history with a particular focus on monasticism, as a major expression of retreat life, and Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the modern retreat movement. Varieties of subsequent retreat types in the spiritualities of different traditions from the Protestant Reformation onwards are considered. The spectrum of study includes Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Pentecostal spiritualities. The study culminates in focusing on current Ignatian and other retreats in their many forms. This includes private devotions to lengthy periods of retreat. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Christian Spirituality)

Staff perceptions of service quality in Egyptian commercial banks : an internal and external perspective

Elanain, Hossam Eldin Mahmoud Abou January 2003 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to examine the relationship between the internal and external service quality dimensions in Egyptian commercial banks. To achieve this objective, the thesis introduced the internal–external service quality model which proposes that the internal service quality has a positive impact on the external service quality. The research model was developed and tested empirically through three main stages. The first stage was based on the extensive review of the literature in order to identity the concepts and measures of the internal and external service quality. In this stage, the research objectives were identified. The second stage was concerned with the building of the internal–external service quality model which proposed that the internal service quality dimensions have a significant positive impact on external service quality. To identify causal indicators for this relationship, some control variables were used and a set of empirically testable hypotheses were developed. [Continues.]

Ana Maria Casarotti Peirano 30 August 2011 (has links)
This paper provides an analysis of the encounter between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at the edge of Jacobs well as it is narrated in the Gospel of John 4,5-26. The first chapter examines the historical and socio-religious gospel text with special attention to the historical three pairs, which are: The rivalry between Jews and Samaritans; water as both a religious and a life element in contrast with the living water given by Jesus, and the historical journey of the patriarchal society in relation with women before the thought given by Jesus in the Gospel. The second chapter examines the present text drawing upon the historical-critical method, focusing in the semantic study of certain words and the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman that enrich their understanding. The contribution of extra-biblical traditions provides deeper insights of the text. The third chapter brings a theological-pastoral reflection over the analyzed text from the perspective of the encounter. The living water that Jesus offered suggests the imperfection of the previous waters that until then mediated the relationship with God. The Samaritan woman's encounter with Jesus through dialogue and progress deepens the originality of the Gift offered. We study its characteristics and its consequences. The fourth chapter presents the challenges provided by this text to the current culture emphasizing the need for an open dialogue to diversity. It outlines the need for recognition of the place of women in contemporary society, with emphasis on the religious arena. The conclusion opens up new questions and commitments signed out on the text: the need to continue walking toward a discipleship of equals as the foundation and essence of a Christian community that wants to live up to Jesus, and the necessary recognition of the place of women in contemporary society, with emphasis on the religious sphere.
