Career Challenges and Coping Strategies of Swedish Elite Show Jumpers : A mixed-methods study / Svenska elithoppryttares karriärutmaningar och coping strategier : En studie med mixad metod

Reveny, Stephanie, Stafverfeldt, Elvira January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine perceived challenges and coping strategies of Swedish elite show jumpers from the holistic perspective. A mixed-methodology was used with a dominant qualitative design and a supportive quantitative design. Semi-structured interviews based on the holistic athletic career model and two surveys developed from the qualitative results were used to collect the data. The participants of the study were 5 Swedish elite show jumpers between the age of 24-29 (M=26.4, SD=2.06). The qualitative findings resulted in two category profiles of perceived challenges and use of coping strategies. The quantitative findings resulted in two individual profile for each participant. The findings identified five higher order themes of perceived challenges (psychological, financial, psycho-social, athletic and vocational) and three higher order themes of coping strategies (social support, problemfocused coping and emotion-focused coping). The individual profiles showed both similar patterns and individual nuances between the participants. Major challenges for the equestrians were financial, injuries and dealing with identity foreclosure. This study represents an effort to highlight the challenges met and coping strategies used by equestrians on elite level, to prevent ineffective coping and negative consequences such as a premature dropout.

Hästsport i dagspressen : En studie av hästsportens representation och framställning i svenska dagstidningar / Equestrian sports in the daily press : A study of the representation and depiction of equestrian sports in Swedish daily newspapers

Hedlund, Camilla, Lantz, Jannika January 2013 (has links)
The following essay is based on a quantitative as well as a qualitative study with the aim ofmapping out the representation and depiction of different sports, with focus on equestriansports, in two of Sweden’s largest daily newspapers during a time period of four weeksin 2012. We considered it important to see if there was any ground for the prejudicesabout the lack of representation of equestrian sports in the media, and we also wanted tosee if the media storm following Rolf-Göran Bengtsson’s win of Jerringpriset in any wayaffected the sport’s representation.First, the quantitative study was executed with over 1 100 articles analyzed. The qualitativestudy followed where four reports were selected for further investigation. These coveredthe three sports most written about as well as the equestrian sports. They were analyzedand compared in order to locate patterns of resemblance or difference. One of the mostimportant finds was that the majority of the articles in the quantitative study about equestriansports were written during the week of Gothenburg Horse Show while there were noarticles written about said sport during the final week of the study.

Att hoppa med teknik : Automation av hästhinder

Kempe, Göran January 2018 (has links)
Usage of Internet of Things in relation to sports is a hard subject to find research about, especially with a connection to equestrian sports. This bachelor thesis researches the problems you face when developing Internet of Things and how to implement systems efficiently. I’ve developed a prototype whose purpose is to facilitate showjumping by automating a horse jumping obstacle since participatory observations revealed problems riders face when practicing showjumping. Every time the horse knocks down the bar the rider must jump off the horse and lift the bar up, wasting time and energy, but also with a risk of hurting the horse’s back. By using Internet of Things, context mapping, participatory observations and design I developed a product that facilitate showjump practice and competition. Together with equestrians in the stable and in discussions we’ve focused on making the design safe for the horses and riders, and that the product focuses on what equestrians believe is important. Through the usage of a Rapsberry pi 3, a stepper motor driver and a stepper motor the rider can control the horse jumping obstacle directly from the horse back and thus facilitating the practice.

The horse in Roman society

Lawrie, Margaret Ruth 30 November 2005 (has links)
This dissertation presents an investigation of the place of the horse in Roman society, within the context of its roles as equus publicus, which derived ultimately from that of the cavalry mount, and race-horse. Consideration of the ceremonial role of the horse provides a clearer understanding of the value placed upon horses and horsemanship in the Roman world, thus permitting inferences to be drawn regarding the role played by the horse in the development of the equester ordo. Evidence is drawn from both literary and archaeological sources to shed light on the management and training of the horses of equestrian Rome. Chariot racing is also re-examined from the perspective of its equine players, and evidence is drawn from various sources to provide a more complete picture of the Roman horse-racing industry as a social structure. The importance of the racehorse in Roman society is examined and the symbolism of the victorious horse as represented in Roman art is discussed. / Classics and Modern European Languages / M.A. (Ancient Languages and Cultures)

L'aile Louis XII du Château de Blois , son décor sculpté à l'aube de la Renaissance / The Louis XII wing of the royal castle of Blois, his sculpted decoration at the beginning of the Renaissance

Doudeau-Cheutin, Claudie 20 October 2012 (has links)
De la seconde moitié du XVe siècle à 1520 / As soon as he become king of France in 1498, Louis XII undertake to rebuild the family castle of Blois. The Louis XII wing of the royal castle of Blois shows an exceptional iconographic and carved program done from 1498 to about 1503, which consists of more than two hundred culots, gargoyles, grotesques, masks, medallions, monograms, and emblems, surrounding the equestrian statue of the king and the staircase. As the manuscript archives relating to the carvings have almost completely disappeared, the objective has been to consider firstly the historical events up until the restorations of the 19th and 20th century that have contribued to the current identity of the château. An iconographic study is approached in the second part, including the sculpted decoration of the château, the relationship between the decoration of the grand staircase and the vault with the equestrian statue. The third part relate to the role of the carved decoration within the artistic context of buiding sites and workshops between 1450 to 1520

RIDING THROUGH LIFE: A LIFESPAN STUDY OF THE ATTITUDES, BEHAVIORS, AND AREAS OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR FEMALE EQUESTRIANS TOWARD BRA USE AND HEALTH OUTCOMES WHEN ENGAGED IN EQUESTRIAN SPORTS

Pekarchik, Karin 01 January 2017 (has links)
Equestrian sport is a popular exercise choice for females of all ages, although the links between this exercise choice, health outcomes, and risk to health have not been thoroughly examined. These issues are of particular interest because the female equestrian has the opportunity to ride and/or compete for decades, from early to very late in life, covering almost the full sequence of the female lifespan. Equestrian sports provide physical activity through riding and caring for the horse, and promote positive mental outcomes through tangible practices, such as engaging in physical activity and hard work, goal-setting, acquisition of skills, and participation in a strong community of practice. Equestrianism is an under-researched activity and sport, but increased understanding of female equestrian health and wellness outcomes may contribute to better health and wellness outcomes for female riders. Since equestrian sports participants are predominantly female, with 74% to 80% of the riding population being women, it is important to understand and potentially improve the health and wellness of female riders. This improved understanding may provide their riding careers with increased longevity, comfort, and healthy. It may allow them to enjoy the sport, whatever their age, minimizing or preventing any health issues. A deeper understanding of mental and physical changes from riding will educate and empower women so they are making informed decisions as they ride, talk to their coaches and doctors, and invest in equipment ranging from sport-specific bras to saddles. Manufacturers may also become aware of the potential opportunity to market female-focused products to this community of practice, which has a demonstrated commitment to the horse and accompanying expenditures. Most research is centered on the horse or major equestrian injuries (death, concussion, bone breakage), but it is hypothesized that having an increased understanding of other health issues, ranging from breast, bladder, and groin health to bone density, weight, and body image, may be of great value. The following master’s thesis will review the current literature related to female health as it relates to equestrian sports; report results of a research survey conducted about female equestrian health and wellness, with a focus on breast health and bra use; discuss the survey results; and make recommendations for future research in this area.

Tävlingsryttares uppfattning gällande styrketräning / Equestrian athletes perception of strength training

Strömberg, Josephine, Bergeå, Johanna January 2017 (has links)
Equestrian sport is one of the biggest sports in Sweden with 29 600-competition riders. Equestrian sport demands a high physical capacity and competition riders need to have both strength, endurance and balance. Therefore, strength training should always be a part of a competition rider´s training regime, because strength training can lead to enhanced performance at the same time as it prevents injuries. Despite this, research that show how much strength training a competition rider perform is limited. Some say that competition riders most often don´t perform any training outside of riding, while some say that physical training is a natural element in a competition rider everyday life. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to describe competition rider´s perceptions regarding strength training as well as the motivation for strength training. Furthermore, the study aims at examining how much and what kind of strength training competition riders perform as well as why/why not strength training is being performed. Method: Information was gathered through questionnaires and through interviews. The selection for the questionnaire was based of competition riders over the age of 18 that compete in islandic horse-competition. The selection for the interviews was based of equestrian trainers in the south of Dalarna that all train competition rider. Results: The result showed that more than half of the competition riders that were part of this study reach the recommendations that are set for strength training. The result also showed a generally positive attitude towards strength training where a perception of strength training leading to a better riding performance was noticeable. The reasons why competition riders perform strength training turned out to be "To be healthy" and "To become a better rider". The reasons why competition rider’s don´t perform strength training turned out to be "Lack of time", "Lack of motivation" and to some extent also "Lack of knowledge". Slutsatser : The competition riders and equestrian trainers in this study generally have a positive attitude towards strength training, but despite of this there are some barriers that prevent strength training. Competition riders should work to overcome these barriers, because strength training has been showed important when performing on top in equestrian sport.

Backman, Anna January 2015 (has links)
Uppsala University Library owns eight volumes of manuscripts attributed to the academy equerry Johan Leven Ekelund (c.1701−1775). In this thesis, I apply methods from the field of material culture studies in order to establish which of the volumes that formed the donation from Leven to the library mentioned in his will. By mapping certain markers such as places, names and dates I am able to identify to some extent where Leven gained his practical skills and which writers influenced him. By analysing the texts, I draw the conclusion that the manuscripts can be divided into groups aimed for different audiences. Some of them fit in an utilitarian context, some of them aim to give riding and horsemanship scientific legitimacy. Some are aimed for a narrow circle of peers, connaisseurs of the art of riding. By examining Leven’s networks, I seek to shed light on whether he wrote in order to further his career. My conclusion is that in that case, Leven’s main focus was probably to help his son, who had a remarkably successful career as a physician after the death of his father. / <p>Orcid nr: 0000-0002-8791-4109</p>

Imagining Future Technology of the Horse Industry and Equestrian Sports

Bergström, Amanda January 2019 (has links)
Equestrian sports are amongst the largest sports and leisure activities in Sweden. One of the major reasons for engaging with horses is the bond to the horse. Just recently technology has found its way into the horse industry which otherwise is a very traditional sport. This paper explores possible consequences technology may have in the future in the environment around horses and on the horse-rider relationship. The exploration was done by combining auto-ethnographic research and a co-speculation workshop. The ideas that were gathered were then the starting point for the creation of a design fiction, in which the ideas were developed and explored. The design fiction also serves as an approachable way of mediating the consequences of technology to the equestrian community. The imagined technology for equestrian sports had both positive and negative impact on the sport and the relationship between horse and human.
