How To: Use Craft as an Everyday Intervention of Joy

Neufeldt, Ciara January 2023 (has links)
This paper questioned how we could utilise feelings of joy, specifically those within a craft context, as a tool of intervention in everyday life. I explored using craft, both in its making and experiencing, as a means for carrying joy into the daily life of the public, thereby increasing well-being and potentially acting as a catalyst for change. I argued the importance of joy in our lives, as well as the need for public accessibility to art and craft. I wanted to use this paper to draw focus on the value I place upon somatic engagement of the body, specifically when we engage with craft, art and our everyday lives. I believe that by centring the experience of the body and educating about the importance of somatics, we can explore a different methodology for engaging with our everyday environments. I argued somatic understanding is critical, as it allows us to move from a purely cognitive understanding to one that is experiential, thereby creating a more accessible and inclusive framework for creating and understanding art and craft.

Del Toro, Aylin, Samuelsson, Zemone January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to describe and understand the meaning of adult children´s experience of growing up in a family with addiction. The study is based on a lifeworld phenomenological approach where the adult children have been the focus. The data collection consisted of five open interviews, where the adult children gave their experience of their childhood. The result of the study shows that adult children all have experienced the sense of shame/stigma, de-prioritized, a dysfunctional everyday life, a body that reacts and a body that remembers. This has led to various challenges and consequences while growing up, the adult children have handled this differently according to their own abilities and circumstances. It has also resulted in challenges in adulthood, which also have been handled differently depending on the person. Based on the results, it has been possible to understand the importance of preventive work towards families where there is an addiction problem. Something that further needs continuous research to prevent dysfunctional upbringing.

[en] This research studies the production of urban space as a complex phenomenon that undergoes the present historical determinations, from the transformations in / of the city in expansion process. The urban is dynamic and marked by moments either of valorization of new areas, of devaluation or revaluation of others, determining new uses and functions to serve the capital. The urban space is social production, materialized in the various spatial practices of the subjects who experience the city. We investigated the production of urban space and the process of expansion from the city of Rio de Janeiro to the West Zone, focusing on the XXVI Guaratiba Administrative Region. The 21st century has been presenting management patterns with public policies focused on issues outside the city, with investments that favour major road works with a strong impact on the transformations of urban space. The city s expansion process introduces two rationalities that complement each other. One is the horizontal rationality that is in the daily dimension and that promotes changes in socio-spatial practices, reaching the subjects in various ways. The other is the vertical rationality characterized by hierarchical, organizational interdependence, configured in networks, causing changes in consumption patterns, in circulation of goods and services, as well as in ideas and innovations. In this perspective we propose a study of the interventions that arrive at the Guaratiba AR, promoted mainly by the State and the real estate market, significantly altering the life of its inhabitants, besides showing an urban reorientation of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This investigation starts from the representations of social subjects, based on dialectics, in order to understand the existent contradictions and conflicts, tensioned by power relations at multiple scales. The analysis of the discursive elements of the research subjects showed a development perspective linked to modernity; Guaratiba as a border area for the capital; and the presence of cultural and social aspects in the region related to the conception of Carioca Backland.

The Use of Digital Storytelling for Impression Management by City Cultural Organizations

Nosrati, Fariba January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation provides a context-specific theory to understand how city cultural organizations can best use digital stories and impression management to create a desired image or enhance public perceptions. The generated model describes how a digital storytelling information system can affect user impressions of a city and the outcomes of using such a system. The study responds to a growing interest among cultural organizations regarding how to use emerging information technologies in the communication of cultural content. An interpretive case study was conducted on the “Love Your City, Share Your Stories” digital storytelling initiative in Hamilton, Canada. Data collection included 95 one-on-one interviews with the general public, the gathering of documents, and the researcher’s personal observations of participants during the data collection process. A systematic approach of data analysis was utilized to capture participant opinions and visualize this information in a data structure. Theories from the literature on information systems, organizational impression management, and narrative transportation ground the study. Findings suggest that a digital storytelling information system can be a viable tool to share city cultural heritage information and positively affect people’s perceptions of a city. The overall outcome of creating/maintaining a positive favorable impression is shaped through a layered experience of benefits by the users. Users are first personally engaged and informed about a city’s cultural heritage (primary benefits), and then they are influenced and inspired positively towards the city (secondary benefits). Findings show that technology characteristics (i.e., media quality and story quality) are critical factors affecting outcomes of use, and that user characteristics and context of use both moderate this relationship. This research provides theoretical insights and practical recommendations for researchers and city cultural organizations wishing to explore the utilization of newer information technologies, such as digital storytelling, for impression management. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This dissertation aims to understand how city cultural organizations can best use digital stories and impression management to enhance public perceptions.

Mina Prodromou, Artemis, Preteni, Gentijana January 2024 (has links)
Background: The number of elderly people with frailty is growing, with increasing age. Muscle weakness, involuntary weight loss, a feeling of exhaustion, and susceptibility to infection are health problems that occur at a rising age. As a result of these symptoms, the elderly experience difficulties coping with everyday life. To achieve independence for the elderly, it is the nurse’s responsibility to have a holistic perspective and scientific knowledge. Purpose: Describing the important aspect of a good everyday life for frail elderly individuals in need of nursing interventions. Method: The method of this study has been systematic literature review and is implemented according to the thematic synthetic design. Result: The results of the study are based on twelve articles with a qualitative design to answer the purpose. The analysis results in three main categories: the psychological impact in everyday life, the physical impact in everyday life, and lastly, health care and the role of impact. The results also show that elderly people felt that their social lives were affected by physical limitations, the need for assistive devices, and the proportion of municipal interventions. To be able to manage and cope with their everyday lives independently was their main desire.

Akuta glykemiska episoders påverkan på vardagen för insulinbehandlade personer med diabetes : En kvalitativ litteraturstudie / Acute glycemic episodes and their impact on everyday life amongst those with insulin-treated diabetes : A qualitative literature review

Tallroth, Johannes, Kristiansson, Max January 2024 (has links)
Background: Diabetes is a collective name for a group of metabolic diseases with the denominator that the body experience an inability to produce, or absorb, insulin in sufficient quantities. Diabetes entails, amongst other potential problems, a non-unsubstantiated risk of acute glycemic episodes due to the body´s inadequate ability to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Aim: To compile knowledge on how persons suffering from insulin treated diabetes manage the awareness of the threat that acute glycemic episodes impose on everyday life. Method: A qualitative study based on eleven primary scientific studies that was obtained from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Result: Three categories and six sub-categories emerged; “A change in everyday life” containing the sub-categories “plan or give up”, “A need for others” and “Unavoidable changes” “Living with worry” containing the sub-categories “Different views on blood glucose levels”, Self-criticism and shame” and “Fear for life and health” and lastly “Various strategies in day-to-day life” which was without sub-categories. Conclusion: People with insulin treated diabetes faces a variety of challenges in everyday life related to acute glycemic episodes. The variety of challenges include special requirements when it comes to planning and scheduling everyday life. Changes in everyday life often requires the implementation of new strategies to handle the challenges imposed by diabetes and it´s symptoms. Challenges which are not only practical in nature but also entails a more psychosocial aspect that can lead to feelings of stigmatization and unrealistic demands on one self. Feelings that can result in unhealthy self-criticism, and sometimes shame, related to the symptoms of inevitable acute glycemic episodes.

Påverkan på vardagen hos föräldrar som vårdar ett barn med typ 1-diabetes : En litteraturstudie / The inpact om everyday life among parets who care for a child with Type 1 Diabetes : A literature review

Nordkvist, Julia, Näslund, Tina January 2016 (has links)
Nyckelord: Typ 1-diabetes, föräldrar, vardag, modell för omvårdnad, familjefokuserad omvårdnad / ABSTRACT Background: Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) among children increases. This may lead to more parents who need to take responsibility for their child’s treatment. The disease has been shown to have a major impact on everyday life for parents and the whole family.   Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate the impact on everyday life among parents that care for a child with Type 1 Diabetes. Methods: A literature study based on ten qualitative studies. The studies were reviewed, analyzed and compiled. Results: The experience of having to adapt to the disease emerged as a recurrent theme in the outcome. The results is presented in three categories; Having to comply with the disease, To experience that relationships change and To experience support and lack of support from others. Conclusion: Parents appreciated when the healthcare support was adjusted to the whole family’s circumstances. A change in one family member affects the entire family. With knowledge of this the nurse could better understand the need for family-focused care. There should be more research on parents’ and families’ need for family-focused care and also on gender differences in parenting.  Keywords: Type 1 Diabetes, parents, everyday life, model for nursing, family-focused care

Paiva, Jacyara Silva de 03 April 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-12-23T14:01:52Z (GMT). / The phenomenon of children and adolescents experiencing destitution and abandonment has become even worse in our country. This felt fact instigates us to take a position and to research this matter in hand which urgently unveils itself in our society. This study aims to answer three questions: 1) How have I, as a researcher, become interested in streets and how have streets become my place of work, evoking a feeling into my ways of being as a(n) (social) educator conducting a research in streets?; 2) What is and How is to exist in streets undergoing such a status quo?; 3) How can we understand the power of a group in the existential survival of children and adolescents living in streets? Thus, the subject or matter/phenomenon of this study/research is the genesis (what is) and the interdynamics not separate from the genesis (how is) of the human being (boy or girl and/or child or adolescent living in streets) in the ways (s)he reveals her/himself, shows her/himself, appears, and allows her/himself to be captured by the look of a scientist who also has a feeling relation to the streets. To do so, we have resorted to the the exitential-phenomenological inspiration, since we are interested in what has been lived and exprerienced by these human beings. The chosen theoretical marks have risen out of the categories of: Paulo Freire (the importance of dialogue ), Victor E. Frankl ( life sense ), and Hiran Pinel ( the ways of being as being oneself in the world s everyday life ). We understand that children and adolescents show diverse ways of being as being ... ephemeral, finite, incomplete, etc. like life itself. Therefore, sometimes they are bold , sometimes they are dramatic in their modes of lives; however, always being brave and having ingenious tactics such as forming survival and resistance groups in order to be able to live in streets or discussing their matters so as to understand themselves, even if they do not manage to meet regularly. This study has shown significant implications to the construction of public politics (social and educational) and politics of impact to the social educator s everyday live and to that of the school teacher s as well. Such inclusive processes can be made viable since these ways of being as being a(n) are understood.

Digitala distinktioner : Klass och kontinuitet i unga mäns vardagliga mediepraktiker / Digital Distinctions : Class and Continuity in Young Men's Everyday Media Practices

Danielsson, Martin January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores how social class matters in young men’s everyday relationship to digital media. The aim is to contribute to the existing knowledge about how young people incorporate digital media in their everyday lives by focusing on the structural premises of this process. It also presents an empirically grounded critique of popular ideas about young people as a “digital generation”, about the internet as a socially transformative force, and about class as an increasingly redundant category. The empirical material consists of qualitative interviews with 34 young men (16-19 years) from different class backgrounds, upper secondary schools and study programmes. Drawing on the conceptual tools of Pierre Bourdieu, three classes are constructed: the “cultural capital rich”, the “upwardly mobile”, and the “cultural capital poor”. The analysis shows that class, through the workings of habitus, structures the young men’s relationship to school and future aspirations. This also engenders class-distinctive ways of conceiving leisure and digital media use. Through their class habitus and taste, the young men tend to orient themselves and navigate in different ways in what they perceive as a space of digital goods and practices, endowed with different symbolic value in school and society. The “cultural capital rich” are drawn to-wards practices capable of yielding symbolic profit in the field of education and beyond, whereas the other classes gravitate towards the “illegitimate” digital culture but deal with this different ways. These findings indicate that there are social and cultural continuities at play within recent technological changes. They also expose the structural differences hidden by sweeping statements about young people as a “digital generation”. Finally, they show that class, contrary to popular beliefs about “the death of class”, still represents a pertinent analytical category.
