Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Composite Sandwich Links for the LCF System

Stephens, Max Taylor 01 January 2011 (has links)
Shear links are used as fuse elements in lateral load resisting systems to provide ductility and dissipate seismic energy. These links have traditionally been employed in eccentrically braced frames, but have more recently been suggested for use in the innovative linked column frame system (LCF). Current design specifications for shear links require intermediate web stiffeners to provide out-of-plane web stability so ductility requirements can be achieved. This research focused on moving from discrete transverse web stiffening to continuously stiffened webs in built up shear links. Built up links were designed to yield in shear when subjected to severe cyclic loading, however the webs of the links were designed using two metal sheets joined by an elastic core. These composite "sandwich" webs allowed for an increase in web thickness (and inherent flexural rigidity) without increasing the shear strength of the links. Numerical and experimental investigations were conducted to assess the performance of composite sandwich links subjected to severe loading. Numerical results showed improved web behavior in sandwich links in which the core material was assigned an elastic modulus greater than 5000psi. Due to fabrication limitations, experimental specimens were fabricated with a core material elastic modulus of 1000psi. These specimens did not perform as well as unstiffened base case links in terms global hysteretic behavior or ductility.

Jämförelse av stegljudsisolering mellan tre olika bjälklagstyper / Comparison of the impact sound insulation between three different joist systems

Wiktor Windblixt, Ida, Karlsson, Maria January 2019 (has links)
Sound and vibration which originate from footsteps can spread in a building and may disturb the people who residence it. Ability to insulate impact sound varies depending on how the joists system is designed and how high its stiffness and mass are. In this thesis the impact sound insulation of three different joists systems will be examined. The joists systems are installed in existing buildings located in Växjö, Sweden and owned by the real estate company Videum.   The purpose of the thesis was to examine which of the three different joists systems that is most suitable for office- and university buildings, concerning acoustics. Furthermore, the purpose was to examine which of the joists systems that has the best ability to sequester impact sound horizontally. The goal with the thesis was to perform a standardized impact sound insulation measurement and a survey to determine which of the joists systems that has the best impact sound insulation. All data was analyzed and calculated.   The results show that the CLT board with a concrete layer reduces the impact sound most efficiently. However, it should be mentioned that the designs of the objects are not fully comparable and therefore the results relate to the entire design including the wall floor connection, rather than to the joists systems alone.

Nádraží VRT letiště Brno Tuřany / HST Station at the Airport Brno Tuřany

Svobodová, Lenka January 2012 (has links)
Main topic of this Masters Thesis is design of railway station for high speed line railway. Building site is situated in East Moravian region in the district of Brno-Tuřany. The building is designed as a detached two-storey object standing on the bridge over the railway. Mass of the building consists of two trimmed blocks which are mutually mirrored. The mass of both parts of the building is pervaded by illuminating stripe. Its shape is also based on the shape of trimmed block and rises over the surrounding surfaces. There are placed vertical paths in the stripes. It helps passengers in orientation because these are visible even from the outside of the building. This arrangement of individual masses symbolizes both direction of the arrival of trains to the station. There is placed arrival and departure hall in the middle of the object. Its height is similar to the height of the object itself. The hall is surrounded by the service facilities of the railway station situated on two floors. The supporting structure is made of steel. Both peripheral housing and roof are supported by the frame construction consisting of planar lattice beams. Construction of the façade is composed of frame system Wicona. The peripheral housing is tiled with panels of expanded metal.

SPÄNNVIDDER I STOMKONSTRUKTIONERAV LIMTRÄ OCH STÅL / SPAN BETWEEN FRAME CONSTRUCTIONSGLULAM AND STEEL

Daoud, Kristina, Marouf, Arkan January 2017 (has links)
There are different methods of constructing frame systems. The choice of material has an influence on the final outcome of the frame system. This bachelor’s thesis includes a comparison on frame systems constructed in steel and glulam. Due to an assignment from Wästbygg AB an investigation has been made regarding which of the material is more suitable for an industrial building with an area of 15,000 m2. The building is to be constructed in Stockholm, and frame systems with a span of 45 meter will be compared to each other. The sizing and construction analysis for both frame systems in steel and glulam has been calculated according to Eurocode. Amount of construction parts needed to finish the build is compiled in a list, which is then used to make an appreciated cost summary for the construction. The cost of transportation to the site of the building is included in the cost. Results for the cost of the materials have been made with collaboration with the material suppliers. The cost summary shows that frame system in steel is economically better, with a lower cost of 1 650 000 kr less than glulam. Information about the different materials has been collected by litterateurs, web pages and interviews. The information is then compared to each other and a result by different characteristic qualities has been made. These qualities are then graded depended on how the materials match a sort of quality that is required in a frame system. Some qualities are more important than others, so there is a contention that some qualitys are better for frame system than others, for example if the material has solidity rather than being esthetic. Especially when constructing a large building as this. It is concluded that the choice of material depends on the type of building that is to be constructed.

Nord, Thea, Edofsson, Nina January 2024 (has links)
The choice of frame system is one of the first and most important steps in the design process. The decision is based on many key factors, including construction time, cost, and carbon footprint. There are studies that describe the different factors for various structural systems, but none that gather four of the most common systems in the same study. This study, conducted in collaboration with Skanska, analyzes a prefabricated CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) structure, a prefabricated concrete structure, a hybrid structure combining CLT and concrete, and a combination structure with steel columns and a flat concrete base, in terms of time, cost, and CO2 footprint. Calculations and life cycle analyses have been performed on the four different frame systems, showing that the hybrid CLT and concrete structure performed the best overall in the three categories. The combination structure with steel columns and a flat concrete base followed, then the prefabricated concrete structure, and lastly the prefabricated CLT structure. Interviews with Skanska employees revealed that their knowledge and experience somewhat aligned with the results of the calculations and life cycle analyses, but the attitude towards continuing to work with the relatively new CLT structure was positive.

Val av stomsystem för en offentlig lokal : Fallstudie avseende entreprenadformen partnering och beaktade av miljöperspektiv / Choice of frame system for a public premise : Case study regarding contractual partnerships and consideration of environmental perspectives

Athanasiadis, Michail, Al Sahi, Hussein January 2018 (has links)
Production and operation of buildings accounts for a large part of global carbondioxide emissions, and it is therefore important to investigate the importance of thechoice of buildings' frame systems in terms of energy consumption and climateimpact over a lifecycle. The purpose of this study is partly to show how differentparts of a frame system in a public premise can be evaluated and chosen on the basisof environmental impact and partly to investigate how the contractual-/collaborativepartnership work in the development of a public premise. A case study of a newly established psychiatric clinic was conducted, and the studyincluded review of project documents, interviews with project participants andcalculations. The results showed that the building could, to a large extent, beconstructed with wood rather than with concrete. This would have resulted in bothreduced transmissions of heat and reduced carbon dioxide emissions from theproduction of materials. The reasons for choosing the prefabricated concrete slabs inprefabricated concrete walls, rather than a wood-based solution, were above all thecontractor's greater experience of working with concrete, coupled with the fact thatthe client would not risk a long production time or unexpected costs. More time fordialogue, analysis and greater openness for working with new solutions could haveled to a more environmentally friendly solution.
