Identidade e alteridade no espaço mítico do Grand Nord quebequense

Otenio, Marta Matsue Yamamoto January 2007 (has links)

This thesis is the result of a research conducted since 2008. In 2010 was completed a Master Degree at UNICAMP, whose main theme was Gérard Grisey's reflections on musical time, presented according to ideas and concepts by the composer himself in his writings. After immersion in his compositional thinking it became necessary to check how he translated into music such structures. Thus, the main objective of this work is to investigate how the composer has built his musical structures, looking for resonances with his theoretical production. For this three pieces from Grisey¿s distinct compositional phases were chosen: Tempus ex machina (1979), Talea (1986) e Vortex Temporum (1994-96). Another objective was to find elements of the composer¿s creative process that had been influenced by prevailing theories in the 1970s, especially information theory. The methodology consisted in the study of relevant literature, and, quantification and analysis of the major structural elements of the chosen pieces. The results that can be highlighted are: 1) the development of an analysis tool by rate of entropy and information, 2) identification of the fundamental structures of the three pieces analyzed, 3) composition of original pieces based on the conceptual study. After the detailed study of the three parts it was found that the same techniques for handling the materials were preserved throughout the work of the composer. The novelty is restricted especially the way he formally organized the processes of transformation, attitude motivated by the need to introduce greater unpredictability in their music / Doutorado / Processos Criativos / Doutor em Música

Understanding Gilgamesh : his world and his story

De Villiers, Gerda 07 March 2005 (has links)
Understanding Gilgamesh – brokenly – is to understand life brokenly. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the narrative of life. It records the full cycle of the nerve and aplomb of youth, of the doubt and crisis of midlife, of the acceptance and quiescience of maturity. Moreover, this understanding is a broken understanding. It starts with the clay tablets that are broken in a literal sense of the word. Further, the narrative is a narrative of broken-ness – the story ends in tears. A man has lost his last chance of obtaining life everlasting. Yet he manages to recuperate despite his failure. The first part of this thesis examined the world of Gilgamesh. Initially he was known as the Sumerian king Bilgames. He makes his appearance in the form of oral compositions that are recited or sung in the royal courts of kings during the Sumerian period: sheer entertainment, nothing really serious. At his side is his loyal servant Enkidu who supports his master in everything he does. Akkadian gradually ousts Sumerian as vernacular, yet the latter continues to dominate as the language of culture and court. Bilgames survives the reign of the Sargonic dynasty, and even revives during the glorious Ur III period of Shulgi and of Ur-Nammu. Sumerian Bilgames-poems are recorded in writing. However, by the time that Hammurapi draws up his legal codex, the Sumerian Bilgames is known as the vibrant Akkadian king Gilgamesh. His servant Enkidu is elevated to the status of friend. Together they defy men, gods, monsters. When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh goes even further in search of life everlasting. He reaches Uta-napishtim the Distant in order to learn the secret of eternal life. The optimism of the Old Babylonian Kingdom is replaced by the reflection and introspection of the Middle period. Life is difficult. Life is complex. The Gilgamesh Epic is once again re-interpreted and supplemented by a prologue and an epilogue: both begin and end at the same place, at the walls of Uruk. Here Gilgamesh looks back and forward to his life and contemplates about the meaning of life in general. The second part of this thesis dealt more specifically with the story – the literary aspects of the Epic. Genette’s theory illuminated several interesting literary devices with regards to the rhythm and pace of the narrative. However, much of the reflective nature of the Epic was also revealed. There were moments of looking forward, and looking backward: after Gilgamesh broke down in tears at the end of the Epic, he suddely gained perspective on life. Somehow a broken narrative focused into a meaningful whole that may just make future sense. Jauss’s theory illuminated why Gilgamesh refuses to be forgotten, why he is once again alive and well in the twenty first century. Although he was buried in the ruins of Nineveh for a thousand plus years, he is suddenly back on the scene – and not for academic reasons only. Not only scholars of the Ancient Near East take an interest in the old Epic, but also people from all sectors of life. Somehow Gilgamesh seems to respond to questions that are asked even by those who understand nuclear physics – but who grapple with the paradox of living meaningfully. Understanding Gilgamesh – brokenly – understands life. / Thesis (DLitt)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Ancient Languages / unrestricted

Huber, Morgane 08 1900 (has links)
Gérard Garouste is recognized as a contemporary French painter, sculptor, and the founder of the humanitarian association La Source. Our brief seeks to reveal the place of personal discourse in its interpretation of myths. We present the exhibition of March-April 2018, Zeugma the Great Drolatic Work, in order to highlight the obvious relationship between man and artist to redefine in his works the close link between his art, his illness, and his history. Our view of the exhibition is based on the question of myth, and precisely its function in human development, in order to understand its application in the Garoustian myth. To do this, we take as support the process of mythification of Gérard Bouchard in order to analyze the issues underlying the creation of a myth within the framework of our corpus. We introduce the three major works of the exhibition in order to study their structural composition and demonstrate their complementarity. In addition, using the concept of collective memory and its autobiography, we analyze the way in which the corpus arises from an individual search for identity as evidenced by the exhibition.

Le fantastique dans Le Spectre large de Gérard Prévot : Une analyse basée sur la théorie de Tzvetan Todorov / The fantastic in Le Spectre Large by Gérard Prévot : An analysis based on the theory of Tzvetan Todorov

Pettersson, Fredrik January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is centred on the fantastic features in Le Spectre Large by Gérard Prévot (1975) and subsequently on a comparison with the features from another collection by Prévot, La Nuit du Nord (1974), studied by Ricci in 1993. The analysis is based on Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic, which puts its emphasis on the hesitation whether the enigmatic phenomena has its origins in the natural (uncanny) or the supernatural (marvellous) world.         The research of Prévot’s literary work is interesting given that, compared to other Belgian fantastic writers such as Jean Ray or Thomas Owen, Gérard Prévot is still rather unknown and not much studied.         With regard to the results, it is found that the stories have a mixed qualities in relation to fantastic theory. In the better tales, the fantastic is born out of a narration with a limited point of view and a vague and sometimes unknown narrator. It is also born out of the plot which introduces the disruptive elements at the very last page.         When comparing the corpus with Ricci’s study (1993), several common features are found, but also a few differences. Prévot has written the two books using a similar vocabulary and the stories often take place in related environments – the North, a place with mysterious connotations. A fantastic which Ricci calls “social” can also be found in both collections. The main point of difference between the books is the narration. While the narrator in La Nuit du Nord has an omniscient status, the one in Le Spectre Large is clearly limited and anonymous.

The primacy of being and the first principles in Geraldus Odonis

Rieger schmidt, Ana 07 April 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with Geraldus Odonis’ treatise De duobos communissimis principiis scientiarum (ca. 1320). In the first part, we analyze the text by focusing on the concept of "ens tertio adiacens". It is the being signified by the totality of the proposition and its truthmaker; it is univocally common to ens reale and ens rationis, for this reason Odonis identifies it to the subject of the principle of non-contradiction and the principle of excluded middle. The ens tertio adiacens also corresponds to the first adequate object of the intellect and to the subject of logic, which is understood as the first science. In the second part, we place Odonis in two historiographical debates: the propositional realism (alongside Walter Burley, Gregory of Rimini and John Wyclif) and the advancements of the doctrine of supertranscendentals (alongside Nicolas Bonetus, Francis of Marchia and others), which emerges from the distinction between the two senses of "res" in Henry of Ghent and in Duns Scotus .

'You are what you read' : intertextual relations in Patrick White's The solid mandala

Stefani, Monica January 2011 (has links)
This work performs an intertextual analysis of the Nobel Prize winning Australian novelist Patrick White’s The Solid Mandala, published in 1966, as part of an effort to boost studies of his novels in Brazil and to investigate why his critical fortune has been undergoing a negative phase recently. First, we briefly present his biography and the conditions surrounding the writing and publication of The Solid Mandala. Later on, we present the historical context of the novel. The relations of conflict and complementation involving the twin brothers Waldo and Arthur Brown in the narrative are analysed, but we focus on their relation to literature (which is an important theme in the novel), depicting their roles as readers and writers in the story, thus, apprehending their feelings towards each other, worldviews and outlook on life (Waldo aspires to become a great writer, and Arthur actually produces a poem). Gérard Genette’s studies on Narratology are used to support our analysis, particularly in the intertextual relation between The Solid Mandala and F. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, which is the title that calls Arthur’s attention. In his pursue to find the whole of his life, Arthur incorporates various elements (centred at just one point, his mandalas) and is able to create his own philosophy. At the end we see that Arthur transcends his reality by using the reading of the Russian novel as an instrument. This study enlightens the pertinence of revisiting Patrick White’s oeuvre (since it proves to be so well tuned in to the current philosophical issues being discussed), and places The Solid Mandala in the context of worldwide literature.
